The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let's be real with you. I've stared at the charts for this stretch of coast, and honestly, it's a tough watch for us surfers. We're looking at a solid 16-day window, but the ocean is looking pretty flat and sleepy for most of it. You might want to leave the boards in the car for a while, because the pickings are mighty slim.
The first real chance of anything even resembling a wave doesn't show up until Thursday, August 20th. That's a long stretch of nothing from now until then. We're talking over a week of small, weak, and messy surf. The energy just isn't there.
For that first possible surf, we're looking at Playa de Santa Marina (Ribadesella). It's a beach, point, and rivermouth setup, so it needs a bit of love to work. On the morning of Thursday the 20th, it's glassy with a light rain, and we might see a tiny 1.3ft wave from the NNW with an 11-second period. The swell energy is weak at 52, but it's at least something. The water temp is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, running at 71.8°F, which is a slight comfort. But honestly, it's just "ordinary" at best. The afternoon brings a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-onshore wind, so that window is small.
The following week stays pretty bleak. There's a glassy morning on Sunday the 23rd with a bit of swell from the NE, but again, it's weak. The energy is low, and the waves are just not going to have any push. The wind is on it in the afternoon, so it's not worth getting excited about.
Look, the bottom line is there are no standout days here. There's no swell over 5ft anywhere in the forecast, so it's not a question of it being too big. It's just... not there. For a spot that's fairly consistent, this is a real bummer. But this kind of flat spell can't last forever. The swell window is open, and forecasts change. Keep an eye on the charts, and maybe we'll get something better further down the line. But for now, I'd find something else to do.
Stay salty.
