The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days at Playa de Candas are not looking like a classic run. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and messy conditions ahead.

The first solid pulse of swell doesn’t arrive until Monday the 11th of August, and even then it’s just a glimmer. For the first four days, from the 6th through the 9th, we’re staring down the barrel of tiny, short-period waves with a combined energy barely cracking 150 (118 – 150 range). Water temp is sitting at 70°, a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is nice, but the surf is just too weak to get excited about.

The best window opens up on Monday the 18th of August. Early morning at Playa de Candas, we’ll see a 3ft swell from the north with a super short period of 6 seconds. The wind goes glassy, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 128 – that’s the most promising number we’ve seen all forecast. The waves are small and the period is short, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly, but for a quick paddle and a few fun rides, it’s your best bet. By the afternoon, the wind swings cross-onshore and the swell jumps to 4ft (164 combined energy), but it’ll get choppy.

The only other call that might get your heart rate up is the morning of the 21st of August. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the west-northwest, but it’s a 5-second period with a cross-shore wind. Combined energy is 143, so there’s some push, but it’ll be bumpy and bumpy. At 5ft, it’s still manageable for a confident intermediate, but the quality won’t be there.

Honestly, for the next two weeks, this is a real quiet spell. Don’t hold your breath for the big stuff. If you’re desperate for a paddle, Monday the 18th morning is the standout.

Rusty.
