The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s gonna be a rough stretch for a wave. We’re looking at Canos de Meca, a sheltered reef that calls for a clean SW swell to really light up. Problem is, for the first week and a half, we’ve basically got nothing. The ocean is flat, showing zero swell energy.
From Thursday the 16th of July right through to Wednesday the 23rd, it’s a desert. No height, no period, just clean, flat water. The water temp sits at 73°F which is pretty normal for the time of year. A few mornings we’ll get a slick, glassy surface, but glassy doesn’t mean a thing without a wave to push you.
We finally see some tiny life on the 19th, with a 0.3ft W swell and a period of 11 seconds, giving us a weak combined energy reading of just 2. But it’s crossed up by a SW wind and honestly, it’s for the die-hards only. That pattern barely changes through the week: a few 0.3ft or 0.7ft pulses drifting in from the west, but with offshores or cross-offshores that keep the surface tidy. Don't be fooled; the swell is weak (energy in the 2 to 11 range), short-lived, and inconsistent.
The first real shift shows up on Sunday the 26th of July. A clean morning with a NW offshore at 9 mph and a 0.3ft groundswell from the west with a long 12-second period. Afternoon gets windier, NW up to 19 mph, still offshore and clean, but the swell only manages 0.7ft with combined energy of 11. It’s still a whisper.
By the end of the run, on Thursday the 31st of July, we get the closest thing to surf: a 3ft easterly swell, but it’s a short, blowy 4-second windswell (energy at 29). The wind is cross-onshore and strong at 19 mph in the morning. It’s going to be messy, lumpy, and fat. Honestly, reef setups and onshores ain't a pretty match.
Bottom line: there isn't a single standout day in this entire 16-day window. The breaks are inconsistent, the swell direction is all wrong for Canos de Meca, and even the best little pulses are too small to get excited about. Keep the board in the car for different coast if you can. Sometimes it’s just a waiting game.
