The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll level with ya – it’s a pretty flat and grim run for Playa de Tres Piedras. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for anything you’d paddle out for. There’s not a single session that scores above a zero internally, and you’ll see why.
We kick off on Tuesday 18th August with tiny 0.7ft swell from the W and a period of just 3 seconds – that’s barely a bump. Combined swell energy is a measly 2 (weak). Wind’s cross-on from the NW at 6 mph, making for light, messy ripples. The whole first week is a slog: through to Monday 24th, the swell never cracks 3ft, periods stay short (3–5 seconds), and winds are mostly cross-on or onshore, often moderate to fresh breezes. The highest combined energy in that stretch is only 40 (still weak) on Monday 24th morning, but with a 3ft WNW swell and cross-on NW wind at 16 mph, it’s just choppy and poor.
There’s a brief glimmer on Tuesday 25th morning – clean conditions with a cross-off breeze from the NNE at 9 mph and a 1ft W swell. But the period’s only 5 seconds and combined energy is just 8 (weak). It’s clean, but barely surfable.
The second week doesn’t get any better. Wednesday 26th to Tuesday 1st September, the swell height stays between 0.3ft and 2ft. The only real standouts – and I use that term loosely – are the mornings of Friday 28th and Monday 31st. On Friday 28th, we get clean, glassy conditions in the afternoon with a 2ft SSE swell at 6 seconds, combined energy 29 (still weak), and glassy wind. That’s the cleanest you’ll see. Monday 31st morning has a gentle offshore from the NE at 9 mph with a 0.7ft W swell – clean but tiny.
The rest is just cross-onshore chop or onshore slop. Swell direction never really matches the optimum WSW direction that this spot needs. The water temperature’s about average for the time of year, nothing weird.
Honestly, mate, this is a blank run. If you’re desperate, the cleanest window is Friday 28th afternoon – that 2ft SSE swell with glassy wind might give you a few ankle-snappers if you’re a beginner on a foamie. But for anyone else, it’s a flat spell. For kite surfing? With the consistent onshore and cross-onshore winds, it might be more interesting than paddle surfing, but for waves, it’s a dud. Forecasts can change, but right now, don’t hold your breath.
