The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll level with you: this is a grim stretch for Playa de Tres Piedras. The whole 16-day forecast is nothing but “poor surf conditions” – not one day worth getting excited about. The swell is weak, the wind is mostly junk, and the ocean is just not cooperating.
Right now, the water is 77°F, which is a huge 5°F warmer than normal – that’s a real outlier. The sea feels like a hot tub, but it’s flat and messy. The combined swell energy is only 7 (weak) on the first Tuesday, with a period of just 3 seconds – pure wind chop. Onshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph is ruining it.
Wednesday the 15th is a washout – cross-shore and cross-onshore wind with micro swell. Thursday and Friday the 16th and 17th keep the same sad story: tiny waves, poor wind. The swell does bump up a little by Saturday the 18th morning, with a combined energy of 53 (moderate), and a 3-foot swell from the WNW at 5 seconds, but it’s still cross-onshore. Not worth the drive.
The standout window, if you can call it that, is Sunday the 19th morning. We get glassy conditions – wind from the WNW at just 3 mph. That’s the cleanest the ocean will be. But the swell is only 1 feet on a 5-second period, combined energy of 9 (weak). It’s tiny. You might get a knee-high ripple for a longboard, but it’s not surf.
Then we hit a dry spell through the middle of the week. There’s a small tease on Wednesday the 22nd morning: glassy again with a 2-foot swell from the W, 5-second period, and combined energy of 26 (weak). Still tiny and clean, but barely rideable.
The next real bump comes Thursday the 23rd morning, with a 4-foot swell from the NW at 5 seconds, combined energy of 92 (moderate). The wind is light from the SSW, cross-onshore, but it’s close to clean. This is about as good as it gets. That little NW pulse has some push, but the period is short, so it’ll be soft and crumbly. For a beginner beach break, this is borderline okay.
Friday the 24th morning is clean – cross-offshore wind from the NNE at 6 mph, and a 3-foot swell from the WNW. That’s the best wind direction of the whole forecast. The swell is small, but it’ll be a pretty wave. Then Saturday the 25th morning sees a 4-foot WNW swell with a 5-second period, combined energy 60 (moderate). Light cross-shore breeze. It’s not big, but it’s the most consistent-looking day.
By the end of the second week, Monday the 27th morning shows a 4-foot swell from the WNW with a 6-second period, and combined energy jumping to 112 (moderate). But the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore, creating lumpy chop. That’s messy. The period is still short, so the waves will be bumpy.
Honestly, if you’re into kitesurfing, the afternoon onshore winds might be more interesting than the waves for a paddle. For a surfer, there’s nothing here that gets the heart pumping. The best bet is a dawn patrol on the 19th or 22nd for a glassy, tiny longboard wave, or the 24th morning for the cleanest conditions. But don’t expect much.
Rusty.
