The Lowdown

Alright, let’s do this in feet and miles. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this spot for a while. Here’s the straight talk.

We’re talking about Playa de Tres Piedras. This beach is a consistent beginner-friendly spot, exposed to the swell, and it loves a good WSW swell direction. But right now, the ocean is flat and confused. The whole 16-day window is a tough one. There’s barely a wave to get excited about, and the forecast shows day after day of poor surf conditions. The first recommendation doesn’t even show up until late in the period, so we’re looking at a big gap with no real surf on offer.

The water temperature is sitting at a very warm 25°C, which is about 2°C above the long-term average. That’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be in the water in a shorty or a spring suit.

Now, let’s walk through the timeline. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny. We’re talking 0.3ft to 2ft, with periods mostly around 4 to 7 seconds. That’s straight up windswell junk. The wave energy is weak, with values like 7 to 63, nothing close to moderate. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, gusting 9 to 19 mph, making the water choppy and messy. There’s no standout session in this stretch.

The first little glimmer of hope shows up on Saturday the 29th of August morning. For a brief moment, we get a clean offshore flow from the NNE at 12 mph, with a 2ft swell from the WNW. The energy is still low at 31, but it’s the cleanest it’s been in a while. Still, it’s tiny and weak.

Then we hit another quiet patch. The 30th of August Sunday morning offers a glassy, offshore NE breeze at 6 mph, but the swell is only 1ft with a period of 5 seconds. It’s clean, but there’s no power behind it.

The best opportunity in the entire forecast comes on Tuesday the 1st of September morning. The swell ticks up to 3ft from the WNW, period 5 seconds, and the wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NNW at 12 mph. The wave energy is moderate at 57, and the conditions are described as “moderate cross-shore with a cross-chop.” Not perfect, but it’s the biggest swell of the period and the most rideable. If you’re out there, it’s your best shot.

Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is similar, with 3ft from the WNW and cross-shore winds, but the energy is a bit higher at 82. Still, the period is only 5 seconds, so it’s a bit lumpy.

By Friday the 4th of September morning, things go glassy. Calm winds, 2ft from the SSE with a 6-second period, but the energy is a weak 21. It’s a pretty morning, but not one for ripping.

To be honest, there’s no standout day here. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality surf. The few sessions with a little bit of swell are still compromised by short period and poor wind. If you’re desperate, the Tuesday 1st September morning is the pick, but don’t expect much. For this area, a blank run like this happens. It’s more a kite surfing setup than a paddler’s paradise when the wind is up and the swell is small.

Rusty.
