The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down for Playa de Tres Piedras. Honestly, it’s a rough patch ahead. The whole sixteen-day window is flat, with a huge dead zone right at the start. The water’s at 77°F, which is about 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s pretty unusual, makes it feel like a warm bath more than surf.
From now all the way through to the morning of Sunday, September 6th, there’s nothing worth getting wet for. Day after day of tiny, messy, onshore junk. There’s a little bump on Monday afternoon, August 25th, with a 3ft swell from the WSW and an 8-second period, but the wind’s howling straight on from the WSW at 15 mph, so it’s just blown-out chop. The combined wave energy hits 125 (moderate energy), but it’s useless for surfing.
The only real highlight, and I mean the only one, is on the morning of Sunday, September 6th. Swell climbs a bit to 3ft out of the WNW with a 5-second period—short period, so it’ll be crumbly and lack zip—but the wind is light and cross-off from the ESE at just 3 mph, leaving the surface glassy. Combined energy is 54 (weak energy). The wave comment calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” and it scores low, but it’s the best shot you’ve got. That morning is your only real window, but it’s small and weak—fine for a longboard or a beginner. Beginners will be fine with the size.
Because the swell is tiny and the period is short, the wave quality is poor. This break is consistent and exposed to the WSW swell, but there’s just no energy coming in. Crowds are often at Tres Piedras, but I doubt you’ll see anyone out.
After that, Monday, September 7th brings a very long-period 18-second swell from the WSW, but it’s only 1ft, so it’s all promise and no power. Combined energy is 70 (weak). Not worth it.
So the bottom line: nearly the whole forecast is a bust. Don’t bother until that Sunday morning, September 6th, and even then, keep your hopes low. It’s a typical dry spell for this area—nothing unusual when the ocean shuts down.
Rusty.
