The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight about Santa Comba – this stretch is looking pretty bleak for the next 16 days. I’m not seeing a single session worth paddling out for. The break itself is a consistent beginner-friendly spot, exposed to the northwest swell window, but everything else is working against it. The wind is almost always cross-on or cross, and it’s blustery most of the time – moderate to strong breezes, sometimes even a near gale, which is just tearing up the surface. The swell direction is almost never from the optimum NW; it’s mostly NNE, N, or NNW, and the period is short, often 6–8 seconds, so it’s weak, jumbled, and messy. The combined energy is low to moderate (mostly two- or three-digit numbers, with a few four-digit spikes later, but the wind just kills any chance of quality). From Saturday 18 July right through to Sunday 2 August, every morning and afternoon is rated poor surf conditions. There’s a tiny flicker on Sunday 26 July afternoon where the energy picks up (221) and the period lengthens to 11 seconds, but the wind is still cross and the wave height is only about 3 ft – it’s described as “marginal” at best. Not worth chasing. So basically, a blank run of 16 days – no standouts, no windows. The swell does get bigger towards the end of July (5 ft to 7 ft), but with strong cross-onshore winds it’s just a washing machine. For a beginner break like this, you’d want clean, small waves and light offshore wind – none of that is happening. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d save the petrol. Rusty.
