The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk it out. Rusty here, looking at Ponzos for the next couple of weeks. First thing, the water’s much colder than it should be – 62°F, which is about 4°F colder than average. You’ll want a thicker wetsuit.
The surf kicks off Monday afternoon, August 3rd, but it’s a dud. We’ve got a 3ft west swell, short period, weak energy (180), and a cross-on wind. It’s lumpy and poor. Skip it.
Tuesday, August 4th, is a bit better on the morning push. Smaller at 3ft, but cleaner with a cross-off breeze. It’s surfable but nothing special. The afternoon gets choppy again.
Wednesday, August 5th, is your first real look. The morning is glassy, with a slight breeze from the WSW. Swell is 3ft from the NW with a 10-second period and moderate energy (195). This is clean, lined-up, and fun on the right board. Afternoon blows out from the NNE.
Thursday and Friday (August 6th-7th) are messy. The swell builds to 6ft on Thursday afternoon, but with a strong cross-onshore wind, it’s lumpy and rough. Friday is weak and choppy, not worth the drive.
The weekend is flat. Saturday morning is glassy but only 1ft, almost no energy. Sunday morning has a tiny bit more at 2ft, with a clean cross-off, but it’s still small.
Now, the standout. After a long stretch of poor to ordinary surf, the morning of Tuesday, August 11th, is the one. The wind is off, glassy, and the swell is 3ft from the NNW with a 10-second period and moderate energy (258). The waves should be clean and have some push. That’s your morning. The afternoon falls apart with a cross-on wind and short period.
After that, it’s mostly small and choppy. There’s a glassy window on the morning of August 16th with 3ft swell, but the period is only 5 seconds, so it’s weak and disorganized.
The end of the period sees a pulse of size. On Monday afternoon, August 17th, the swell jumps to 7ft from the NNE, with strong energy (596), but the period is short again and the wind is onshore. It’s big, but it’s a mess – more of a kitesurfing day than a clean surf day.
So, to keep it simple: Tuesday morning, August 11th, is the one to circle. It’s clean, glassy, and has some energy. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just a washing machine. Keep your expectations in check.
Rusty.
