The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Ponzos has cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, don’t get your hopes up for the first few days. Monday and Tuesday are looking pretty weak with messy winds and small, short-period swell. The water is sitting at 62°F which is a solid 4°F colder than usual for this time of year, so that’s a bit of a shock to the system. The combined energy on Monday morning is only 161 (moderate), and it’s a cross-off wind, but the waves are surfable but very ordinary. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for.

The first real window of opportunity cracks open on Wednesday morning, the 5th of August. We’ve got a 3ft swell rolling in from the NW with a 10-second period, which is a nice little groundswell, and the wind goes glassy with a slight air. That’s a major positive – clean, peeling conditions. The combined energy jumps to 245 (moderate), so there’s a bit of push. This is the standout of the early period. The water is still cold, but the waves will be fun for a beginner-friendly spot like Ponzos. Just keep in mind that the crowd profile says “often,” so expect a few locals out there.

The rest of the first week is a write-off. Thursday through Saturday see strong onshore winds, lumpy chop, and the swell drops right off. We’re looking at a gap of several days with no real recommendations.

Now, looking ahead to the second week, there are a couple of promising mornings. Monday the 10th of August, the morning session has a 3ft swell from the NNW with a 12-second period, pushing the combined energy to 348 (moderate). The wind is light and cross-off, so the surf will be clean. That’s a solid option. Then Tuesday the 11th of August, we get another glassy morning with a 3ft swell from the NNW and a 10-second period, combined energy of 235 (moderate). That’s another clean, fun session. These two mornings are the best bets in the second week, but they’re a week and a half out, so keep an eye on the forecast.

Beyond that, it’s a lot of small, wind-affected slop. The surf peters out again, with a gap from around the 12th through the 18th, with only tiny, poor conditions on offer. The surf on the 16th of August has a 5ft swell from the NW, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind is cross-on, so it’s just a messy, lumpy closeout. That’s one for the experts only, if anyone.

So, to wrap it up: Wednesday morning the 5th is your best bet for a clean, fun surf. After that, the mornings of the 10th and 11th of August are worth setting the alarm for. Everything else is a lot of wind and small waves.

Rusty.
