The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for Zambujeira do Mar. The first real shot of anything surfable doesn’t come until the morning of July 29, and even then, it’s only marginal. The pattern is mostly small, weak, and messy, with a lot of cross-onshore wind keeping the surface lumpy. You’ll be waiting over a week before the swell even starts to push past 3ft, and during that time, the energy is pitifully low – we’re talking combined energy in the 20s to 90s range. It’s just not happening.
The wind is the main culprit here. Almost every day is a cross-onshore blow, usually from the NW or NNW. That keeps the wave face bumpy and the lines a mess. A few mornings look like they might have a slight cross-offshore element, but the swell is too small to make it worth paddling out. The water temp is around 69°F for the first break, which is about normal for the time of year, nothing unusual.
Now, the standouts are really only one block of time, and it’s a long way out. The best on offer is the morning of July 30. That’s Thursday. The swell will be pushing 6ft from the NW (8 seconds), and the wind is forecast to be glassy – dead calm from the SSW. That’s rare, and it’s the only window in the whole 16 days where the wind plays nice. The combined energy jumps to 523 (moderate), and the surf conditions are expected to be very good. That’s your one chance. The WNW optimum direction for this break means the NW swell will be a little off-angle, but the clean conditions will make it work. The afternoon of the 30th sees the wind flip onshore, so that morning window is the only one.
The 29th is a maybe. The morning has 5ft NW swell (9 seconds) with light cross-onshore wind, and the combined energy is 375 (moderate). It’s marginal, but it’s a step up from the rest. The afternoon of the 29th builds to 6ft and 10 seconds, but the wind goes onshore, ruining it.
So, if you’re reading this on the 15th, mark your calendar for the morning of July 30. That’s your best bet. Before that, don’t bother. The 14-day run is a desert.
