The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Zambujeira do Mar.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is a bit of a grind. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and choppy conditions. The wind is mostly from the north or northwest, coming onshore or cross-onshore, and that’s just messing with what little bump we have. The swell energy is weak, barely getting into the double digits, so you’re looking at knee-high dribble at best. Save your energy for the second week.
The real action doesn’t kick off until the very end of July. On the morning of Monday, 28th July, things start to get interesting. The wind turns light from the northeast, giving us a clean, cross-offshore breeze. The swell is building from the northwest at 6ft, with a period of 7 seconds. The energy is building, and the conditions are described as clean. This is a solid intermediate wave, but it’s a bit of a jump from the flat spell.
The standout window, however, is the morning of Wednesday, 29th July. The swell is up to 8ft from the north-northwest, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The energy is cranking. The wind is a whisper from the north-northeast, making it glassy. Now, 8ft is expert territory; this is a big, powerful wave. The long period (10 seconds) gives it shape and push, but at a beach break like Zambujeira, it could be a bit of a freight train. You’ll want to be on your A-game.
Then, Thursday morning, 30th July, is another gem. The swell drops slightly to 6ft from the north-northwest, still with a 10-second period. The wind is glassy from the south-southwest. The energy is strong. This is a major standout for the intermediate crew – a big, clean, powerful northwest swell with perfect glass. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, and the anomaly is not significant, so it’s your usual summer water.
The Friday morning, 31st July, is also worth a mention. The swell is 5ft from the north-northwest with a 9-second period, and again, glassy conditions from the northeast. This is a solid, clean wave for the end of the month.
After that, the swell starts to fade quickly into the first days of August, dropping back to weak, onshore-chopped junk. So, your window is tight: the last few days of July. The 29th and 30th are the true standouts, but they come with a size warning for the 29th.
Rusty out.
