The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s get into it for Zambujeira do Mar.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, it’s pretty flat and messy. There’s a long stretch of small, wind-affected surf from Thursday 16th July right through to Saturday 25th July. Swell heights mostly sit under 3ft, and the wind is chewing it up – cross-onshore and choppy, with a few cross-shore moments. The combined energy stays low, bouncing between 23 and 119 (weak to moderate), so there’s nothing really worth paddling out for. This patch of poor conditions runs for about 10 days.
The one true standout comes right at the end of the forecast. Monday 27th July morning is the pick of the period. The swell pushes up to 8ft from the NNW, with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind goes glassy – offshore from the SW at just 3 mph. That’s a magic combo for a clean, lined-up session. The combined energy rips at 904 (strong), so there’s plenty of push. But – and it’s a big but – this size is over 8ft on the afternoon, and even the morning is pushing into expert territory. The swell is also a bit too big for this break, which is very consistent and exposed to WNW swell. The water temp sits at 68°, which is about normal for this time of year.
After that, Tuesday 28th July morning still has a solid 8ft NNW swell with cross-shore winds, but the energy drops to 715 (strong). It’s still big and only for experienced surfers. The rest of the back half of the month stays lumpy and cross-onshore, with no repeat of that glassy moment.
So, bottom line: if you’re an expert and can handle a solid 8ft-plus groundswell, the morning of Monday 27th July is your window. Otherwise, the first 10 days are a write-off.
Rusty.
