The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the Algarve’s got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks at Zambujeira do Mar.
Honestly, the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got tiny, weak waves with almost no energy behind them—barely a ripple in the ocean. The wind is stuck in a cross or cross-onshore groove, keeping everything chopped and messy. From late Friday 17th July right through to Monday 27th July, the call is "poor surf conditions" every step of the way. You’d be fighting for dribbly 1ft to 3ft slop with periods so short the waves are just crumbling. It’s a long, flat stretch.
Things start to get interesting near the end of the run. On Monday morning 27th July, we finally see the combined swell energy tick into the moderate zone (392), with a 6ft NW swell showing up. But the wind is still cross-shore, making it a "marginal" call. Keep an eye on it.
Now, here’s the standout. If you can wait, Tuesday 28th July morning is where it gets proper. We’ve got a clean 7ft swell out of the NNW, with a moderate combined energy of 541. More importantly, the wind goes glassy. Light offshore breeze from the SW, maybe 3 mph. That’s the best window for clean, lined-up waves. But be warned, this spot is exposed, and the crowd factor says "sometimes", so you might have some company for these beauties.
Then, from Wednesday 29th to Friday 31st July, the swell gets real. We’re talking 7ft to 8ft swell from the NNW, with periods up to 9 seconds, and the combined wave energy rockets up to 848 and even 1012 on Friday afternoon. That’s strong energy, but the forecast flags it as "too big for this break"—sloppy conditions are predicted, especially in the afternoons when the wind is onshore and the waves get lumpy. The early mornings on the 29th and 30th, however, are glassy and look excellent for any expert surfers who know how to handle a 7ft to 8ft groundswell. That's the real score for the big-wave crew.
Heading into Saturday morning 1st August, we’ve got another glassy morning with 7ft NNW swell, moderate energy (518). Another great window if you’re after clean conditions. But the afternoon turns onshore again, so make the dawn patrol.
Bottom line: don’t waste your petrol for the first 10 days. The real surf shows up from Tuesday 28th July. Tuesday morning is the pick for big, clean rides under glass, and if you’re a charger, the glassy mornings on Wednesday 29th, Thursday 30th, and Saturday 1st are the ones.
Rusty out.
