The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Zambujeira do Mar over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, the ocean is sleepy. The first session worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, the 20th of August. We’ve got glassy conditions with a tiny 2ft WNW swell rolling in, but the energy is weak (64). The water is sitting at 69°, which feels a bit colder than normal for this time of year. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s pretty ordinary.
Thursday afternoon the wind swings onshore and it turns ugly. Friday and Saturday are a mess too – cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, choppy conditions, and the swell is a jumbled mix. The wave energy picks up a bit, getting into the 200s and 300s, but the wind ruins it. Not worth your time.
Sunday the 23rd of August morning shows a bit of promise. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the WNW with a period of 11 seconds, and the energy is solid (665). The wind is light and cross-shore, but it’s still a bit scratchy. It’s marginal, but if you’re desperate, you could find a few. The afternoon gets chopped up again.
The whole following week is a write-off. Monday through to the end of the month is a mix of rain showers, moderate winds, and poor surf. The breaks are getting hammered by cross-onshore winds and the swell is messy. The one exception is Sunday the 30th of August morning. We get a clean, cross-offshore wind from the NNE with a 5ft NW swell. The energy is moderate (314) and conditions look clean. This is the best of a bad bunch in the first week, but it’s still not a stand-out.
Now, looking ahead, the second week has a real gem. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is the one to circle on your calendar. We’ve got glassy conditions, a 6ft NW groundswell with a 10-second period, and the wave energy is cranking at 813. That’s moderate to strong energy. The wind is flat calm from the NE. This is a proper session. The only catch is that 6ft is getting a bit meaty for beginners, but for the rest of you, this is the best on offer. The Friday morning after that is also clean with a 5ft NW swell and glassy wind, but it’s not as big.
Bottom line: there’s a lot of junk to wade through. The first week is mostly garbage, with only a few marginal windows. The real standout is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. Get out there if you can.
Rusty.
