The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next two weeks at Zambujeira do Mar are a real mixed bag, and most of it is pretty ordinary. The water's sitting at 67°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you might want a thicker spring suit.
We kick things off with nothing much going on. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are a write-off – tiny, weak swell around 2ft to 2ft and poor wind conditions. The combined energy is pathetic (77) on Wednesday morning, so don’t even bother.
Friday the 21st sees a bump in size to 5ft from the NW, but the period is short at 8 seconds. The wind is cross-shore and cross-on, kicking up chop. The energy picks up a bit to moderate (303), but the surf is still poor. Saturday the 22nd is similar – 4ft to 5ft, cross-on winds, messy conditions.
Then we hit a quiet patch. Sunday the 23rd is a glimmer of hope – glassy conditions in the morning with 2ft NW swell, and the energy is moderate (122). The surf is very ordinary, but at least it’s clean. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are back to poor, with small swell and onshore or cross-on winds.
Wednesday the 26th is another bust, with Thursday the 27th bringing a bit more size (6ft) but short period and a fresh cross-on wind that’s lumpy. Not worth it.
Here’s the standout: Friday morning, August 28th. This is the best session on the board. We’ve got a clean 5ft NW swell with a 9-second period, and the wind is cross-off from the NNE at 9 mph. The combined energy is strong (427), and the wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." This is your window – get out there early before the wind swings NW in the afternoon and ruins it.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are marginal at best. But then, Monday morning, August 31st, we get another shot. Glassy conditions, 5ft NW swell, 9-second period, and strong energy (329). The forecast says "expect good surf conditions" again. This is a solid follow-up session.
The last week of the forecast (September 1st to 3rd) is all poor – moderate to fresh cross-on winds, lumpy, and the swell is too short-period and messy. Nothing to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: the only real windows are Friday morning the 28th and Monday morning the 31st. Everything else is either flat, blown out, or just not worth the paddle. The swell direction is mostly NW, which is a bit off the optimum WNW for Zambujeira do Mar, but when the wind plays nice, it’s still rideable.
Stay sharp, and don’t waste your energy on the dud days.
Rusty.
