Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. It’s gonna be a quiet start for a while at Boilers. For the first several days, through to the end of the first week of July, we’ve got tiny swell, mostly under 3ft, and winds that are cross or cross-onshore, keeping things grotty. Not much to write home about. There’s a bit of a lull until we start seeing something with a bit more push.
Come the morning of Sunday the 12th, we finally see the combined energy tick up to 119 (moderate energy) as the swell bumps to 3ft from the NNW, period still short at 5 seconds. Winds are light cross-shore, so it’s not a total write-off but still a bit messy. The afternoon sees the swell build to 5ft with energy hitting 190, but winds turn moderate cross-shore. Not clean, but there’s a pulse coming.
The real uptick starts on Monday the 13th of July. The morning brings 4ft of NNW swell with light cross-shore wind and combined energy at 213 (moderate energy). The period is still short though, just 6 seconds, so the waves will be a bit weak and fat. It’s marginal at best. By Monday afternoon the swell hits 6ft but the wind jumps to 30 km/h cross-shore, chopping it up.
Tuesday the 14th continues that trend: morning sees 5ft from the NNW, energy at 258, but again light cross-shore keeps it just about rideable but not good. Afternoon gets bigger at 7ft but wind is fresh cross-shore, so lumpy.
Now, Wednesday the 15th morning has 6ft with light cross-shore and energy of 262 – this is the first session where the combo of bigger swell and light wind starts to look promising, but the short period (7 seconds) holds it back. Still, the water temp is about 70° and the anomaly is 1°, so it’s a bit warmer than usual for this time of year.
The morning of Saturday the 18th sees 5ft from the N, period 7 seconds, energy 228, light cross-shore. It’s marginal, but not terrible.
Then, the standout window appears. On Sunday the 19th of July, we get a glassy morning with a 5ft N swell, period 7 seconds, and combined energy at 254 (moderate). That’s clean, light winds, and the swell is solid enough for a fun session. This is the best morning of the whole run. Afternoon gets wind-affected again.
The next good call is Monday the 21st of July morning: another glassy session, with 6ft from the NNW, period now 8 seconds, energy a solid 438 (moderate to strong). That’s a longer period, meaning better shaped waves, and with glassy conditions it’s gonna be a real treat. A bit of size though – at 6ft it’s edging into expert territory for the bigger waves.
So, overall, the two real standouts are Sunday 19th July morning with glassy clean 5ft N swell, and Tuesday 21st July morning with glassy 6ft NNW swell. Those are the ones to circle on the calendar. Expect crowds possible at Boilers, especially on those clean mornings.
Boilers is a reef break, advanced level, very consistent, and exposed to the WNW swell window. The swell direction here is from the NNW and N, which is close to that optimum WNW – not perfect but close enough to wrap in nicely. The water’s a touch warmer than average for July.
Rusty out.
