Table - best surf conditions forecast for Boilers over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking.
Honestly, for the first week and a half or so, it’s pretty bleak out there. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and short-period swell, and most of the time the wind is just messing it up. There’s a single spot on the radar, and it’s not looking good until well into the second week.
The only break on offer is Boilers (reef), an advanced spot. It’s super consistent and exposed to the swell, but the first real window of clean surf doesn’t show up until the morning of Thursday, July 16. Before that, from Wednesday July 8 through to Wednesday July 15, it’s all "poor surf conditions" – cross-onshore or cross winds, weak 1ft to 3ft swell with periods of only 4 to 6 seconds, and the wave energy is in the puny 30s to 60s. Not worth paddling out for. Kite surfers might be interested, but not us.
Now, the first glimmer comes on the morning of Thursday, July 16. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, and the swell bumps up to 5ft from the NNW with a period of 7 seconds. The wave energy jumps to 220 (moderate). The conditions are labeled "glassy" and "expect good surf conditions." That’s the first time the ocean looks like it wants to play. Still, the period is short, so it won’t have the grunt you’d want, but it’ll be clean.
Friday, July 17 morning is another glassy window – 6ft from the NNW, period 7 seconds, energy at 340 (moderate), and "glassy" again. Again, the wind is neutral, so the surface will be smooth. But the swell direction (NNW) doesn’t match the optimum (WNW) for Boilers, and the period is short, so the shape might not be epic. Still, these two mornings are the best on offer for the whole 16 days if you just want clean surf.
From Monday, July 20 morning, the swell picks up to 7ft from the NNW with period 8 seconds, energy at 498, and glassy conditions. That’s promising, but then the afternoons get wrecked by strong winds. The standout window might be Tuesday, July 21 morning: 7ft from the NNW, period 8 seconds, energy at 662 (strong), with a light cross-offshore wind and the forecast saying "expect very good surf conditions." That’s your best bet. The swell size is borderline for experts (over 8ft in the afternoon), but the morning should be manageable and clean for advanced surfers.
After that, the afternoons get big and lumpy, and the mornings get marginal. By Thursday, July 23 it’s still big but messy. So, the one true standout to circle on your calendar is the morning of Tuesday, July 21. The rest of the second week is promising size but often messy.
Water temperature at Boilers is currently 69°F, which is about average for the time of year – nothing wild there.
Keep your expectations in check until mid-July, then hit that Tuesday morning window if you can. The long wait might be worth it.
