The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s get into it.

The outlook for Boilers over the next 16 days is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a consistent run of swell, but for the most part, the wind is gonna be a pain. This is a real advanced reef setup, and it’s exposed to the swell, so it handles a lot of juice. The water temp is sitting around 70°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing to get excited about there.

We kick off from Saturday, July 18, and honestly, it’s a rough start. Saturday morning has a 5ft swell from the north, but it’s a short-period 7-second wind swell, and the cross-shore wind is making it lumpy. The wave energy is moderate (253). Saturday afternoon gets worse – the wind picks up to 35 km/h from the NNW, and the surf is 7ft but messy. This is not one for the paddle.

Sunday and Monday are similar. The swell hangs around 6ft to 8ft, but the fresh cross-shore winds keep it chopped out. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (321 to 593), but the quality is poor. It’s going to be a disappointing few days.

The best of the whole period, and the only real standout, is the morning of Thursday, July 23. We get a glassy start with a 6ft swell from the NNW, 8-second period, and the wind is a whisper from the WSW. The energy is moderate (346), and the conditions are described as “good surf conditions.” If you’re an advanced surfer, this is the window to hit – clean, lined-up waves on that reef, but the wind will turn cross-shore by the afternoon, so don’t sleep in.

The rest of the week into late July is mostly marginal. The mornings are often lighter in wind, but the afternoons get blown out. The swell sticks around 6ft to 6ft, and the period rarely gets above 8 seconds, so it’s that short, lumpy stuff. There’s a small lift on the morning of Monday, July 27, with a 6ft swell and light breeze, but the wind is still cross-shore.

Now, heading into the end of the second week, we see a real uptick in size. The morning of Tuesday, July 28, has 7ft, and by Wednesday, July 29, we’re looking at 8ft to 10ft from the NNW with a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1188 on Wednesday morning, and the wind is light from the north. This is a big groundswell window, but the cross-shore wind will still be a factor by the afternoon. At over 8ft, this is strictly for experts only. The period is getting longer, which means better shape and more energy, but at a reef break like Boilers, it could get pretty heavy.

Into the first week of August, the swell slowly drops back to 5ft to 6ft, with the period stretching to 10 seconds on Sunday, August 2. The winds are still mostly cross-shore, so the surf stays messy. The crowd factor is “sometimes” here, so expect a few locals out, but it’s not going to be a circus.

Honestly, if you’ve got a kite, the afternoons with the fresh cross-shore winds and that 6-10ft swell might be more fun than paddling out. For paddle surfing, the only real golden window is that Thursday, July 23 morning. Everything else is a fight against the wind.

Rusty.
