The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and listen up. It's Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for your stretch of coast. It's gonna be a bit of a waiting game for the good stuff, so let's break it down day by day.
The next week is pretty grim to be honest. We've got waves, but the wind is just going to chew them up. Most mornings are cross or cross-onshore, and the afternoons get even messier. The swell is small, around 2ft to 3ft, and the period is short, only 8 seconds. This means weak, wind-blown junk. The energy readings are low too, bouncing around 102 to 123. Don't get your hopes up; it's a lot of paddling for not much reward.
Things don't really improve much into the end of the week. Friday the 21st sees the swell start to pick up to 4ft but the period drops to 6 seconds and the wind goes onshore and strong in the afternoon. It's just a mess. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd have a bit more size, around 5ft to 8ft, but the wind is still howling cross or cross-onshore, making it lumpy and poor. The energy is climbing, with readings like 449 and 603, but it's all for nothing with that wind.
The next week is where we start to see some windows. The standout is the morning of Tuesday, August 25th. The wind drops to nothing, glassy, and we'll have a clean 5ft of swell from the NNW with a 7-second period. The energy reading is 223, which is moderate, but the clean conditions will make it feel way better than the size suggests. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
There’s another brief window on the morning of Wednesday, August 26th. Again, it’s glassy with a clean 4.5ft from the NNW. It won't be huge, but it'll be fun and clean.
But the real standout, the one that has me excited, is the morning of Saturday, August 29th. The wind finally swings around to a light offshore from the SSE and it's glassy. We'll have 5.5ft of clean NNW swell with an 8-second period. The energy is at a solid 370. This is going to be the best conditions on offer during this whole stretch. The direction is right, the wind is right, and there's enough push to make it fun.
However, remember, our spot, Boilers, is a reef break. A period of 8 seconds is okay, but there's a chance it breaks a bit straight. But with the glassy conditions, it’s going to be well worth the look. Crowds are always possible there, you know how it is.
One last thing, the water is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. A wetsuit is probably still your best bet.
So, to sum it up: the first part of the week is a write-off. The mornings on the 25th and 26th of August are a glimmer of hope. But if you want the best, you're waiting for the morning of Saturday, August 29th. It's the pick of the bunch. There are some other mornings with surf, like the 30th, but they're just ordinary. Make the call and get out there when it's clean.
