The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at 70°F—that’s bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, I’m not gonna lie. We’ve got a lot of cross and cross-onshore winds messing up the Boilers (reef) with short-period swell around 8 seconds. The energy is only moderate in the 100-200 range, and the wave comment is poor or marginal. Monday the 17th through Wednesday the 19th, you’re looking at tiny, choppy lines with a score that’s a flat zero. Not worth paddling for.
We hit a bit of a turnaround on Monday morning the 24th. The wind goes glassy from the NW, swell is 5ft from the NNW with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is 183 (moderate). It’s "surfable but very ordinary" – nothing to get excited about, but it’s clean. Then Tuesday morning the 25th is a real step up. Glassy again, NW wind, 6ft from the NNW, period 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 320 (moderate). The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions." That’s your first real standout, but it’s only a morning window before the afternoon winds ruin it.
Now, the real action is in the second week. Friday morning the 28th brings a clean, cross-off breeze from the NNE, swell 7ft from the NNW, period 8 seconds, and energy at 630 (strong). That’s a "very good" call. Then Saturday morning the 29th is glassy with SSW wind, 8ft from the NNW, period 8 seconds, and the energy is pumping at 952 (strong). That’s a big, clean swell, but 8ft is gettin’ into expert territory for most folks. Sunday morning the 30th is the pick of the whole run: glassy, 8ft from the NNW, period 9 seconds, energy at 1050 (strong to very strong), and the comment says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Monday morning the 31st and Tuesday morning the 1st of September are also clean with cross-off or glassy conditions, 6ft to 6ft, good energy, and "very good" calls. But remember, all these are morning windows only. The afternoons get chewed up by strong cross-shore winds.
The gap from the start until the 24th is about a week of dodgy surf. Then you’ve got a few good mornings, but the standout is Sunday the 30th morning. That’s your best bet. Just be aware it’s a reef break, so it’ll handle that long-period groundswell well, but it’s a heavy wave for experts only at that size.
Stay safe, and don’t sleep on that Sunday glass-off.
Rusty.
