The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, let’s break it down in feet and miles.
Overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a persistent NW swell train rolling through, but the wind is a real pain in the neck for most of the period. It’s mostly cross, cross-on, or just plain fresh, which is going to mess up the surface. Most of the time it’s a write-off, but there are a couple of those glassy windows that are going to be worth setting the alarm for.
The only spot on the radar is Boilers, a reef break that’s exposed and very consistent. It’s an advanced wave, so it’s not for the faint of heart. The water temp is sitting at 71°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no need for a thick wetsuit just yet.
The first real chance of anything decent is Sunday, August 24th, in the morning. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the NW with a period of 11 seconds, which is decent groundswell energy (moderate energy at 633). The wind is light and cross, so it’s not perfect, but it’s surfable. It’s teetering on the edge of being too big for beginners, but for an experienced crew, it’s a goer.
Things get a bit more interesting towards the end of the month. Monday, August 31st, in the morning is a stand-out window. The wind is dead calm, glassy, and we’ve got a 6ft NNW swell. The energy is moderate (403), and with that period of 7 seconds it’s a short-period wind swell, but that glassy surface will make it look way better than it is. It’s a rare moment of calm. Remember, crowds are *sometimes* a thing here, so you might have some company.
Then again, Tuesday, September 1st, in the morning is looking even better. Another glassy morning with a 6ft NNW swell and the same period of 8 seconds (energy at 356). This is that sweet spot where the wind is light, the swell is solid, and it’s not too crazy. This is the pick of the lot for the whole forecast.
Wednesday, September 2nd, in the morning is a similar story – glassy, 5ft NNW swell (energy 280). A bit smaller but still fun. These three mornings are your best bets.
After that, it fades. Friday, September 5th, and Saturday, September 6th mornings are glassy but the swell drops to 3ft and 3ft respectively. The energy is weak (139 and 140), so you’ll be on a longboard or a foiler if you’re keen. The afternoons are all blown out.
The biggest issue here is the wind. It’s fresh and cross-shore or cross-onshore almost every afternoon, and the swell is often too short-period (under 8 seconds) to really wrap in clean. The second week is a real tease; the swell is there, but the conditions just aren’t cooperating.
So, for the real standout: clear your Tuesday morning, September 1st. That’s the one.
Rusty.
