The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The outlook for this region is a long waiting game, and you’ll need to be patient. There’s a stretch of poor conditions for the first week, with some better windows opening up after that.
Honestly, the first week is a write-off for any decent surf. From Tuesday 18th August right through to the end of the following week, conditions are just messy. The winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the swell is small and weak. The combined wave energy is low, in the 100-200 range (122-141), and the period is short (5-8 seconds), so it’s just small, choppy, and pretty uninspiring. The water’s at 70°, and that’s dead average for this time of year, so nothing to get excited about there.
The first glimmer of something promising shows up on Thursday 27th August morning. Boilers (reef) is the spot to watch. The wind goes glassy – almost dead calm – and the swell is solid 7ft from the NNW, with a bit of a better period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 570 (moderate). That’s clean, powerful surf, but at 7ft, it’s a bit sizeable for beginners. This is a good window, but it’s still a week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Sunday 30th August morning. Again, at Boilers. The wind is glassy again, this time from the WSW, and the swell is a clean 6ft from the NNW with an 8-second period. The combined energy is 432 (moderate). It’s well-sized, clean, and the reef will handle the direction perfectly. For a point break like this, that 8-second period is going to give you some lines. This is your best bet. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
Then Monday 31st August morning is almost as good. The wind is a dead calm, the swell is still 6ft from the NNW, and the energy is 385 (moderate). Another glassy morning. It’s a longer run of clean conditions, which is a rare treat.
After that, into the first week of September, the swell drops off and the winds get messy again. A few half-decent mornings on the 1st and 2nd, but the swell is falling below 3ft and the period is short, so it’s back to the waiting game.
Bottom line: The first week is a hard pass. The real action is late in the month. The standout is the glassy Sunday 30th August morning, with Monday 31st August a close second. If you’re after a solid, clean session, that’s your window.
