The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee or a beer, because the next couple of weeks at Boilers is a real mixed bag. We’ve got some solid pulses of energy coming through, but the wind is going to be the main character in this story, and honestly, it’s not always a nice one. This is an exposed reef set-up, so it needs the right conditions to really fire.
We start off with a bit of a flat, messy run. Friday the 21st through the weekend is pretty average. There’s swell around – around 5ft on Friday morning – but the wind is cross or cross-onshore from the NNW, and the period is short, around 6 to 7 seconds. The water temp is sitting at a comfortable 71°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The energy is weak to moderate (196), and the conditions are just lumpy. Not worth paddling out for.
The outlook improves a touch going into Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th. The swell bumps up to 5ft to 6ft, with a slightly better period around 9 to 11 seconds, giving it a bit more grunt. The combined energy starts to climb into the moderate range (387 to 633). But again, the wind is a problem – mostly cross or cross-onshore. The mornings offer a window with lighter breezes, but it’s still a bit of a gamble.
Now, let’s talk about the real windows. The standout moment in the first week is Thursday morning, August 27th. The swell is a solid 6ft from the NNW, and the wind goes glassy. That’s the magic word. Expect clean, peeling lines on the reef. The energy is moderate (319), and with that glassy surface, this is your best bet for a proper session. The size is manageable for advanced surfers, but beginners should sit this one out.
After that, the wind picks up again through the end of August, but keep an eye on Monday morning, August 31st. Another glassy morning with 6ft of NNW swell (434 energy). It will be clean again.
Looking into the first week of September, there’s a couple of promising windows. Tuesday morning, September 1st, is a standout for the forecast period. You’ve got 7ft of NNW swell, a cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, and the wave comment says “very good surf conditions.” The energy is moderate (568), but the direction and wind combo should make for some excellent, powerful reef waves. The size is getting up there, so it’s for experienced folks only.
Then, Wednesday morning, September 2nd, sees another glassy morning with 6ft of swell. The combined energy is lower (349), but it will be a fun, clean session. Later in the week, Friday morning, September 4th, offers 3ft of NW swell and glassy conditions, which is a nice, mellow option for a surf, though the energy is weak (204).
The Best Bet: Honestly, the two mornings to circle on your calendar are Thursday the 27th of August and Tuesday the 1st of September. Thursday for the glassy, clean 6ft waves, and Tuesday for the bigger, cleaner 7ft swell with the cross-offshore wind. The wind is going to be the enemy most of the time, so when it goes light or offshore, you have to be in the water. Crowds are possible here, especially when it’s good.
