The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the boil for the coming weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a bit of a frustrating stretch. The first few days are a write-off with poor surf and messy cross-shore winds. The swell is showing, but the conditions are just not cooperating. The water temp is sitting around 69°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Friday, July 17th. The wind swings light and cross-offshore, and the forecast is calling for good surf conditions. The swell is 6ft from the north, with a moderate wave energy (299). The period is a short 7 seconds, so it's not groundswell, but that clean surface will make it rideable. Boilers is a reef break that's very consistent, so it will be handling that swell. It's sometimes crowded, so expect some company if you head out.
After that, it's back to the same old story for a few days – lumpy and cross-shore, with marginal surf at best. The swell hangs around, but the wind won't let it be good.
Then, on the morning of Tuesday, July 21st, we get a standout. The wind goes glassy. Absolutely glassy. Swell is 6ft from the NNW, energy is moderate (315). This is the best on offer by a long shot. That reef at Boilers is going to be clean and lined up. Get on it.
The following week is a mix of marginal conditions and more poor afternoons. The swell picks up a bit, with the morning of Saturday, July 26th seeing 8ft from the NNW and moderate energy (735). That's a solid size – get it wrong and it's a beating – but it's still a short period. The winds are light cross-shore, so it's a bit of a gamble. The afternoons are just blown out.
The last few days of the forecast window are more of the same: marginal mornings, fresh cross-shore winds in the afternoon ruining the shape. The swell is holding in the 6ft to 7ft range, but the wind is the enemy here.
So, if you're looking for a window, the mornings of Friday July 17th and especially Tuesday July 21st are your best bets. The rest is a lot of waiting and watching.
Rusty.
