Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at Boilers.
The coming couple of weeks are a real mixed bag. We’ve got a window of clean conditions right off the bat, but then things turn average for a long stretch. The real standout is hiding way at the end of the period, so patience is the name of the game.
The best of the lot comes right at the start. Friday morning, July 3rd, with glassy conditions and a clean, manageable 5ft swell from the NNW. The water temp is 68°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about on that front. The energy is moderate (385), which tells you there’s some push behind it. That’s your window for a good session if you can get out.
Now, here’s the catch. From Friday afternoon all the way through to the morning of July 15th, it’s a bleak stretch. The wind turns onshore or cross-shore nearly every session, and the wave heights drop off or turn messy. We’re talking about nearly two weeks of average to poor conditions. The energy levels drop right off into the weak range (values in the 45-108 range), meaning the ocean is just flat and grotty. Not much to get excited about.
Then, on Wednesday morning, July 15th, we get a brief flicker of hope. The morning looks glassy again with 5ft swell from the NNW and moderate energy (231). It’s a solid reminder that the ocean has a pulse, but the wind is likely to turn onshore by the afternoon.
Finally, the real promise of the outlook. Saturday morning, July 18th. This is two weeks away, so treat it as a promising rumour rather than a certainty. The model is showing a solid 8ft, long-period groundswell from the NNW. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s got some shape to it. The combined energy is strong at (885), which is a serious amount of power for this spot. However, at 8ft, this is expert territory only. The morning wind is a light cross-shore, which will keep it fairly clean. Given the size and power, this setup at Boilers – a reef break – should hold it together nicely. It’s a true standout, but only for the experienced crew.
So, to boil it down: this Friday morning is your solid, reliable bet. Then sit on your hands until that big pulse on July 18th, but keep your expectations in check until it gets closer.
Rusty.
