The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour.

We’re looking at Kitchen Windows, a beach and reef setup that’s going to get some solid juice. Water temp is about average for the time of year.

First real action is Tuesday the 4th of August. Tuesday morning, clean 5ft swell from the southwest, 12-second period, light north wind at 6 mph, cross-off. Energy is 1032 – that’s moderate. This is excellent for experienced surfers. Crowds are only “sometimes,” so you might score. Tuesday afternoon stays clean, 5ft, 11-second period, energy at 826.

Wednesday the 5th starts with a smaller 3ft swell but a very long 15-second period from the SSW. That’s groundswell, perfect for the reef. Morning is clean, light north wind, energy at 871. Wednesday afternoon the swell jumps to 6ft, 16-second period from the SW, but the wind picks up to a moderate southwest breeze at 9 mph. Still cross-off and clean, energy at 1734 (strong).

Thursday the 6th is the big one. Thursday morning, 12ft swell from the SW, 14-second period, light cross wind from the south at 3 mph. Energy is 4062 (very strong). That’s huge – experts only. Thursday afternoon is the real standout: 10ft from the SW, 13-second period, clean cross-off wind from the southwest at 9 mph, energy at 3354. This is as good as it gets.

Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th keep the swell solid, 8ft to 8ft, with clean conditions Saturday morning and afternoon. Saturday afternoon especially: 8ft, 13-second period, light southwest wind, cross-off, clean, energy at 1982. Brilliant.

Sunday the 9th gets messy. Strong winds, heavy rain, 10ft to 13ft, but the wind is fresh and cross, making it lumpy. That’s more for kite surfing. This messy pattern continues into the next week until the 13th.

The next clean window is Friday the 14th of August. Morning, 10ft from the ESE, 13-second period, light cross breeze from the NNE at 6 mph, energy at 3746. It’s a bit crossed up but rideable. Saturday the 15th morning is a gem: 7ft from the ESE, 10-second period, offshore wind from the northwest at 6 mph, clean. Energy at 2003.

Then Monday the 17th morning is glassy – zero wind, 8ft from the ESE, 8-second period, energy at 1116. And Tuesday the 18th morning is also glassy, 5ft from the SW, 12-second period, energy at 1174. Excellent for experienced surfers.

Best bets: Thursday afternoon the 6th and Saturday afternoon the 8th. The glassy days at the end are also well worth it.

Rusty.
