The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Leftovers has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a solid run of surf coming, but it's going to require picking your moments. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than you'd normally expect for this time of year, so you might want an extra layer if you're heading out.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, honestly. The swell is there, but the wind is messy. Sunday the 19th is a write-off with a fresh 22 mph offshore wind making things tricky despite a 7ft SW swell. Monday isn't much better for the morning, but by Monday afternoon, we get a clean 4ft SE swell with a gentle offshore breeze. It's small, but it's clean.
Now, the real standout is shaping up for Tuesday morning, July 21st. That's the one you want to circle. We've got a 6ft SW swell, but it's pumping in with a very long 15-second period from the optimum direction. The wind is glassy, completely flat. The wave energy is strong (1715), and the conditions are rated excellent. This is a reef break, and that long-period groundswell will be reeling down the line beautifully. It's a top-shelf session for experienced surfers, and with that kind of quality, expect crowds to be a factor.
Tuesday afternoon gets a bit tricky with a bigger 8ft SSW swell and a cross-shore wind, but Wednesday morning, July 22nd, is another cracker. A 7ft SW swell with a 12-second period, light cross-offshore wind, and strong energy (1640). It's going to be another clean, powerful day.
The swell hangs around, but the wind gets more challenging. Thursday the 23rd sees a 12ft SW swell in the afternoon, but it's blown out with a fresh cross-offshore wind. Friday the 24th is a massive 12ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period and extreme energy (6563), but the wind is onshore and messy. That's big, powerful, and ugly – definitely for the experts only, and even then, it's a battle.
Things settle down again for Saturday the 25th. Another glassy morning with a 8ft SW, 13-second swell and strong energy (2090). That's a solid, clean day for the experienced crew.
The following week has some promising pulses, but the wind is less reliable. The 29th of July looks like a real diamond in the rough. Wednesday afternoon is glassy with a 8ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and near-strong energy (2988). That's another excellent, clean session on the cards. The 2nd of August also has a huge 8ft SSW swell with a 17-second period and very strong energy (4726), but it's blown onshore, so it's a power session for the committed.
Overall, the best of the best is Tuesday morning, July 21st, and Saturday morning, July 25th. Get in the water then.
Rusty.
