Table - best surf conditions forecast for Donkin Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Donkin Bay, which is a reef and point set-up. It’s gonna be a mixed bag, so let’s get straight into it.
We kick off on Wednesday afternoon (8 July) with some knee-to-waist high swell (6ft) from the WSW, but a cross wind is chopping things up. The water is 57°, which is about 3° colder than what we'd normally expect this time of year – you’ll notice that chill. The energy is strong (1613), but the quality isn't there yet. It’s a bit of a write-off for a paddle.
The first real standout is on Thursday morning (9 July). The swell bumps up a touch (7ft) from the SW, with a solid 14-second period groundswell. The wind shifts light cross-off and it’s clean. This is good, solid, intermediate-level surf. That long period at a reef and point means the waves will be well-shaped and have some push to them, but keep an eye on the tide. It’s the best early option.
Friday morning (10 July) is a close second. The swell is still solid (6ft, SW, 13s), but here’s the magic: the wind is glassy. Absolutely dead calm. Offshore from the NW means it’ll be clean as a whistle. You’ll get some nice, lined-up waves (1070 energy) with good shape.
Things taper off into the weekend. Saturday (11 July) morning has a smaller (4ft) but clean swell with lighter cross-off wind (3/5). Not big, but workable. Beyond that, there’s a real lull from Sunday through to Tuesday (12-14 July) with small, weak swell and mostly onshore or poor winds. It’s a quiet few days.
The next real spike comes on Wednesday 22 July. That’s over two weeks away, so don’t book your flights yet, but the charts are lighting up. Wednesday morning shows a solid 6ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period. The energy is cranked (1725) and wind is clean cross-off from the NE. This is the best swell of the period on paper – proper groundswell at a reef and point. It’s got power, shape, and the conditions look clean. That’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Thursday 23 July holds similar size (7ft to 8ft) but the winds get messier and the period drops a little. Still surfable for experienced guys, but Wednesday is the pick.
To sum it up: the standout windows are Thursday 9 July morning and Friday 10 July morning in the near-term. Then look ahead to Wednesday 22 July morning for a promising but less certain long-range bomb. Crowds are only *sometimes* an issue here, so you won’t be fighting too many kooks.
Stay wet, stay keen.
