Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a cracking outlook ahead for Donkin Bay, and there's plenty to get excited about. Let’s break it down.
The surf kicks off this Monday morning, July 6th, with a solid start. We’re looking at a 6ft swell from the WSW with a period of 11 seconds, and get this—it's glassy, with a light ENE breeze at 3 mph. That’s about as clean as it gets, boys. The wave energy is moderate at 828, and the vibe is "expect very good surf conditions." This is a reef and point break, exposed to the swell, and it’s lining up nicely. Monday afternoon holds the same size, a little more wind from the S at 9 mph, but it stays cross-off and clean. Solid all day.
Tuesday morning, July 7th, is a beauty. Swell drops slightly to 5ft from the SW, 12-second period, and again glassy conditions with an ESE breeze at just 3 mph. Combined energy is 956—nice and punchy. Tuesday afternoon gets a bit more wind but stays surfable with a cross-off breeze.
Now, Wednesday morning, July 8th, is where things get interesting. We’ve got 6ft from the SW, period jumping to 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 1455. Winds are light cross-off from the S at 6 mph. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers—not for beginners, as it’s over 5ft. The long period means better-shaped waves, longer lulls, and it’s a point break, so it should handle that groundswell beautifully.
Thursday, July 9th, is the standout of this first week. Morning brings a 7ft swell from the SW with a 14-second period—very long period groundswell. Energy is a thumping 1688. Winds are near calm from the S at only 3 mph, cross-off. That’s glassy, clean, and powerful. This is for the experienced crew only. Thursday afternoon stays excellent, with 7ft and similar conditions, just a bit more breeze.
Friday morning, July 10th, is still fun but dropping off a bit. 6ft from the SW, 13-second period, but the wind swings N at 3 mph, making it cross-shore. The energy is 1137, but conditions are more marginal. Friday afternoon sees onshore winds from the W at 9 mph, so that’s a washout.
The weekend takes a dive. Saturday, July 11th, is poor—4ft swell, onshore winds, and messy. Sunday morning, July 12th, gets small at 3ft and glassy, but it’s just a knee-high dribble. The whole of the next week, from Monday July 13th through Tuesday July 14th, is tiny—under 3ft and mostly ordinary.
But hang on. Wednesday, July 15th, things ramp up again. Morning brings a 6ft SW swell with 19 mph cross-off winds. It’s clean but strong wind. The real standout of the whole forecast is Thursday, July 16th. Morning delivers a 8ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and combined energy is a massive 2708. Winds are from the SSE at 9 mph, cross-off and clean. This is big, powerful, and for experts only. The afternoon holds 8ft, still clean. This is the best on offer in the whole run.
Friday, July 17th, backs off to 5ft, still clean with cross-off winds, but then Saturday, July 18th, gives a nice surprise: 4ft in the morning with glassy conditions from the E at 3 mph, and the period is 14 seconds—very long period for a smaller wave, so it’ll have some shape. The energy is moderate at 722.
Then we hit a gap. Sunday, July 19th, through Monday, July 20th, is all messy with strong winds—25 mph from the ENE on Sunday morning—and poor to marginal conditions. Not worth paddling out.
The last standout is Tuesday, July 21st. Morning brings a 5ft SW swell with a 16-second period—very long period groundswell. Combined energy is 1369. Winds are glassy from the WSW at just 3 mph. That’s perfect, clean, and powerful for the experienced surfer. A solid way to close out the forecast.
Water temperature is about average for this time of year, no major anomalies to note. Crowds at Donkin Bay can be a thing sometimes, especially on the good days, so get out early.
Overall, the best of the best: Thursday morning, July 9th, for the clean, glassy 7ft groundswell, and Thursday morning, July 16th, for the big, powerful 8ft swell with clean cross-off winds. Those are the sessions to circle on the calendar.
Rusty.
