Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, we’ve got a bit of a slow start ahead, but this 16-day window for Donkin Bay is a story of two halves. The first few days are pretty ordinary, but there’s a solid run of good, clean swell coming through the middle of the period, and then a big, powerful finish in the second week that’s worth keeping an eye on.
Friday the 3rd is a write-off. The morning’s got a 5ft WSW swell, but it’s blowing 25 km/h from the NE, so it’s messy. The afternoon is even worse, with a 3ft wave and poor conditions. Saturday the 4th is a little better, with a 3ft SW swell in the afternoon and clean conditions, but it’s still small. Sunday the 5th is more of the same – small and clean but not really doing much.
Now, Monday the 6th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning brings a solid 7ft WSW groundswell at 12 seconds, and with the wind going glassy from the SSE at just 5 km/h, it’s going to be absolutely clean. The combined energy is strong at 1138, but this is a reef and point break, so that long-period groundswell should wrap in nicely. It’s a standout for the whole period – for experienced surfers only, as it’s over 8ft. Tuesday the 7th is still good, with a 6ft WSW swell and clean conditions in the morning. The water temp is sitting at 56°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year.
Wednesday the 8th is another big one. The morning has a 7ft SW swell pushing in with a 14-second period, and the wind is light from the S. The combined energy is massive at 1901, so there’s serious power in the water. Again, this is for experienced surfers, but the conditions are clean. Thursday the 9th keeps the run going with a 6ft SW groundswell and clean morning conditions. Friday the 10th is still good, with a 5ft SW swell and clean conditions all day, but it’s a step down in size.
Then we hit a rough patch. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th are blown out with strong NW winds and choppy, poor conditions. That’s two days of nothing. Monday the 13th is back to tiny, glassy conditions, but the swell is only 2ft, so it’s hardly worth the paddle.
The real action is at the end of the second week. Wednesday the 15th afternoon sees a 8ft WSW swell, but it’s messy with cross-shore wind. But Thursday the 16th morning is a proper standout – 8ft WSW swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is offshore from the E at 10 km/h. The combined energy is 1609, and it’s clean. This is for experts only, but it’s a serious session. Friday the 17th morning is also excellent, with a 7ft SW swell and offshore winds from the east, keeping it clean. That’s a great way to wrap up the run. After that, Saturday the 18th drops back to small, average conditions.
So, the best on offer is Monday the 6th morning for the glassy, powerful groundswell, and Thursday the 16th morning for the big, clean, offshore swell. Both are for experienced surfers, but they’re the gems in this outlook.
Rusty.
