G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about Farmer Burgers. This reef break is exposed to a WSW swell and it’s been fairly consistent, so we’ve got a run of waves coming through. The water’s sitting at 56°F which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—an anomaly of -3°F, so you’ll want a decent suit.
We kick off on Friday, 3rd July. The morning is the pick with a 4ft WSW swell, period of 9 seconds, and light cross-offshore NE wind at 6 mph. The combined swell energy is moderate at 333. The conditions are clean, offering good surf. That afternoon, the wind swings to a cross-on from the WNW and it goes poor—best to be out early.
Saturday 4th July morning sees smaller waves at 3ft from the WSW with an 8-second period, light cross-off NNE wind. The energy is 213, weak-to-moderate. It’s clean but small. The afternoon drops to 1ft with a long 16-second period—marginal stuff.
Sunday 5th July morning is a standout for a session. Glassy conditions, NE wind at 3 mph, 3ft WSW swell, 8-second period. The combined energy is 274, still weak-to-moderate, but glassy water makes it a joy on the small waves. Afternoon gets ruined by a 9 mph south wind.
Monday 6th July morning jumps to 6ft from the WSW, 12-second period, and a combined energy of 931—moderate to strong. Winds are cross from the SSE at 6 mph, so there’s some chop, and it’s only marginal. This is getting solid, but not clean enough for a top grade.
Tuesday 7th July and Wednesday 8th July keep the swell up around 5ft to 6ft, with periods between 11 and 14 seconds, but cross-onshore winds keep things messy. The energy on Wednesday morning hits 1361—strong wave energy—but it’s choppy.
Thursday 9th July morning is the real highlight. Glassy, dead calm, with 5ft SW swell and a period of 14 seconds. Combined energy is 811, moderate-to-strong. That’s very good surf conditions, clean, and with that longer period the waves will have shape and power—perfect for a reef. The afternoon goes cross-on and marginal.
Friday 10th July morning is glassy again with a 4ft SW swell, 13-second period, and ENE wind at 3 mph. Combined energy is 477. Good surf, clean, but not as punchy as Thursday.
Saturday 11th July and Sunday 12th July drop off. Saturday gets a 16 mph NNW cross wind and poor surf, only 3ft. Sunday morning has a smaller 2ft SW swell with a 12-second period and light cross-off N wind—clean but tiny.
Monday 13th July is glassy, flat-ish with 2ft SW swell, 12-second period, and energy at 144—weak. Surfable but very ordinary.
Tuesday 14th July afternoon picks up to 4ft WSW with a 13-second period and a 16 mph cross wind in the morning, then cross-on in the arvo. Energy hits 545. Still poor with the wind.
Wednesday 15th July afternoon brings a 8ft WSW swell with an 11-second period and a combined energy of 1432—strong. But it’s a cross wind with a moderate breeze, making it choppy and only marginal. This is expert territory size-wise, but the wind kills it.
Now, the real standouts in this 16-day run are Thursday 9th July morning and Thursday 16th July morning.
Let’s talk about Thursday 16th July—that’s over a week away. The morning is glassy with a 7ft WSW swell, 12-second period. The combined energy is 1195—strong. The description says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. This is a decent-sized groundswell with perfect wind, but 7ft is only for experts. The reef should handle that period well, giving proper peaks.
Friday 17th July morning has 6ft SW swell, 12-second period, and clean ENE cross-off wind at 6 mph. Combined energy is 808, moderate-to-strong. Very good surf.
Saturday 18th July morning fades to 4ft SW swell, glassy, 12-second period, energy at 351.
Crowds are only sometimes a problem here, so it’s a decent bet. Overall, the best on offer is Thursday 9th July morning for a clean, punchy session in moderate swell, and Thursday 16th July morning for the bigger, glassy groundswell for experts who like it solid.
Rusty.
