The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for Farmer Burgers. This reef break is exposed to the swell, and the whole 16-day window is a real mixed bag. We've got a few days of clean, glassy conditions followed by a big run of strong, tricky swell. The standout sessions are the early mornings, so if you're not an early bird, you might be missing the best of it.
The water temperature is sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don't forget the thicker rubber.
Let's kick off on Tuesday, 14 July. The afternoon is a write-off – cross-on wind and poor surf. Not worth paddling out.
Wednesday morning, 15 July, is the first real highlight. The ocean is glassy, calm as can be. We're looking at a 3ft swell from the WSW, but the magic is the period – a solid 16 seconds of groundswell. The combined energy is moderate (421). It's small, but that long period will push through nicely on this reef. The crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have a few friends out, but with it being a weekday morning, it’ll be a quiet one.
Wednesday afternoon deteriorates as the wind swings cross-on and the swell picks up a bit. The energy jumps to 927, but it's choppy and messy.
Thursday, 16 July, is a big one. The morning session is firing for experienced surfers. The swell is 6ft from the WSW with a 13-second period, creating a massive 1264 combined energy. The wind is a clean cross-off breeze, making for some excellent, powerful waves. This is a serious session, not for the faint-hearted. The afternoon turns to a moderate cross-on and gets choppy again.
Friday, 17 July, morning is another glassy winner. The swell drops to 4ft from the SW, 11-second period, and the energy is 360. It's a clean, fun-sized wave. The afternoon sees the wind come back onshore and ruin it.
Saturday, 18 July, is a solid small-wave day. Both morning and afternoon are glassy, with a 3ft swell from the WSW. The energy is light (229-262), making it a perfect beginner-friendly session. No crowds problems.
Sunday, 19 July, is a no-go. The morning is marginal and the afternoon is a total chop-fest.
Monday, 20 July, morning is glassy again with a 4ft swell from the SW. The energy is 304. A clean, waist-high day. The afternoon is an onshore blown-out mess.
Now, Tuesday, 21 July, through to the end of the run, gets serious. The swell is consistently over 6ft, and often over 8ft. This is expert territory. The morning of Wednesday, 22 July, is a standout with glassy conditions and a 6ft, 14-second swell from the SW. The energy is 1214 – powerful and clean for those who can handle it.
The later part of the month, from 23 July onwards, is just massive. We're talking 8ft to 12ft swells, with energy readings hitting five digits (5839 on the 25th!). The wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-on, meaning it's a wild, challenging beast. The morning of Friday, 24 July, is a special mention: glassy conditions with a 8ft, 15-second groundswell from the WSW. That's a beautiful, powerful wave for the experts. The afternoons are generally too big and messy.
The final few days, 28 and 29 July, see the swell drop slightly but it's still big (7ft to 8ft) with a mix of cross and fresh offshore winds. The morning of the 28th sees a fresh offshore from the ENE, which will clean up the 8ft swell nicely, but it's still a heavy wave.
Overall, the best bets are the glassy mornings of Wednesday, 15 July (for the small, clean groundswell) and Thursday, 16 July (for the expert-level, clean power). Everything else is either small and clean or big and gnarly.
Rusty.
