The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Kleinmond’s got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
This is a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got a run of days where the swell is just too big for this reef, and a few days where the wind is howling. But there are some absolute gems hiding in there, especially if you’re an experienced surfer who knows this wave. The first few days are a write-off, but don’t walk away just yet.
The week starts off pretty average. Sunday and Monday the 23rd and 24th are looking marginal with a light cross-onshore breeze and a messy little swell, nothing to get excited about. Tuesday the 25th is a total no-go, with a strong 19 mph cross-onshore wind and an 8ft SW swell that will be a choppy mess. Wednesday the 26th is just as bad with the wind.
Then we get a little glimmer of hope. Thursday the 27th is looking real nice. The wind drops off to glassy conditions, and we’ve got a clean 5ft S swell rolling in with a period of 11 seconds. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so you won’t need a super thick steamer. The wave energy is moderate (837), and with the glassy wind, this is your best bet for the first week. It’s a reef break, so it’ll handle that swell real well.
Friday the 28th is okay, but the 30th of August is a standout. Sunday morning brings a 7ft WSW swell, period of 9 seconds, and glassy conditions. The wave energy is moderate (1314), but combined with the clean glass, this is a top pick for experienced surfers. It’s a decent size and the reef will handle the short period swell fine.
Now, hold onto your board. The beginning of September brings some serious, serious size. The 1st of September is a big day with a 10ft SW swell and a 13-second period, but it’s clean with a cross-offshore wind. That’s a solid groundswell and the energy is strong (2975). This is for experienced surfers only.
The 2nd of September is a monster. We’re looking at a 13ft to 15ft SW swell, with a very long period of 14-15 seconds. The wave energy is massive (over 6900). The wind is glassy or light, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert territory, and only if you know the reef.
The 3rd of September is another day of massive swell (13ft) with a strong offshore wind, which is clean but makes it hard to paddle into. Again, too big for most. The weekend of the 5th and 6th is a write-off with strong winds and huge swell, but then the 7th of September, Monday morning, we’re back to a clean 15ft SW swell with a cross-offshore wind. Huge, but clean.
The best, most consistent, and cleanest window for the average surfer is that Thursday the 27th of August. For the experienced crew, the standout is the 30th of August morning with the glassy 7ft swell, and the 1st of September morning with the clean 10ft groundswell.
Stay safe out there, and remember, the ocean calls the shots.
Rusty.
