Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s coming for Kleinmond. The forecast starts with a bit of promise on Sunday the 5th, and then we’ve got a real mix of clean windows and some absolute howling mess.
The first surf worth mentioning is on Sunday morning (July 5th). We’ve got a clean 5ft swell rolling in from the west, with a period of 8 seconds, so it’s a bit on the short side. The wind is light and offshore from the northwest, so it should look pretty clean on the sets. The combined energy is reading moderate at 668, so it’s not a powerhouse, but it’s a nice opener. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, Monday the 6th sees a jump in size. The morning brings a 7ft swell from the WSW with an 11-second period, which is a decent groundswell. But the wind is light and cross, so it won’t be glassy, just okay. The energy jumps up to 1228, so there’s some proper push in the water. It’s still clean enough for intermediates, but it’s not the stand-out of the period.
The real standout action cranks up on Tuesday the 7th. The morning session sees a 7ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the WNW. By the afternoon, the swell builds to 8ft, same direction, but the wind goes glassy. That combination of solid groundswell and glassy conditions is about as good as it gets. The combined energy is strong at 1792. This is the best bet for experienced surfers this week.
Wednesday the 8th is a bit of a tease. The swell is still solid at 8ft to 8ft from the SW, with period stretching to 13 seconds. The morning is just cross-shore wind, so it’s rideable but not perfect. The afternoon turns ugly as the wind swings onshore from the ESE at 12 mph, chopping it up. Energy is very high at 3043, but the wind ruins the party.
From Thursday the 9th through to Sunday the 12th, it’s a write-off for paddle surfing. We get consistent fresh onshore winds from the east and southeast, blowing 15 to 19 mph, turning the surf into a lumpy, choppy mess. The swell is still pumping on the 9th and 10th, with energy over 3000, but it’s strictly for kites, not surfboards.
After that, things drop right off. Monday the 13th through Tuesday the 14th is very small and weak, with onshore wind. There’s a gap of a few days with absolutely no good options.
But keep your eyes on the long-range. Wednesday the 15th of July wakes up with a glassy morning. A 4ft groundswell from the WSW, period of 14 seconds, and dead calm wind. The energy is moderate at 622, but the quality looks excellent for that size. It’s a promising little clean-up day.
Then we’ve got a bigger, more serious window coming. Friday morning the 17th of July looks *excellent* for experienced surfers. We’re looking at a 10ft SW groundswell, 13-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind from the WNW. The combined energy is massive at 3014. That is a proper swell for the reef, but it’s for experts only. Even better is Sunday the 19th of July. The morning brings 8ft WSW groundswell, with a very long 14-second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is strong at 3132. This is another stand-out: clean, powerful, and long-period lines wrapping in. Then Monday the 20th follows up with a 7ft swell and dead calm winds, glassy as a lake. This whole spell around the 17th to 20th is the best on offer, though being over a week out, treat the exact timing with a bit of caution.
So overall: ride Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 15th for clean, manageable waves. For the big-league stuff, circle the 17th and 19th of July on your calendar.
Rusty.
