The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Kleinmond's got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
Kleinmond’s a reef setup, and it’s quite exposed to the swell. For the next few days, the water temp is sitting around 15°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year. We’re kicking off with some surf on offer, but it’s a mixed bag.
Wednesday the 15th is a bit of a write-off. The morning has a 4ft SW swell, but it’s cross-off and the conditions are just marginal. The afternoon bumps up to 8ft SW, but the wind swings cross-on, making it messy. The combined energy is moderate (2840), but it’s not the day for it.
Thursday the 16th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning delivers a 8ft SW swell with a glassy surface – that’s a major positive. The wind is basically nothing. This is a good one for experienced surfers, as 8ft is gettin’ up there. The combined energy is strong (2241). The afternoon drops a bit to 7ft, but the wind is light cross, so it’s still rideable.
Friday the 17th morning is looking clean with a glassy 6ft SW swell. The combined energy is moderate (835). It’s a solid, fun-sized wave. The afternoon drops off to 5ft.
Saturday the 18th has a clean 5ft SW swell in the morning, with a light cross-off breeze. The energy is moderate (1053). The afternoon picks up to 7ft from the WSW, still clean, but the wind picks up a bit.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are back to smaller, more marginal conditions with cross-shore winds. The swell drops to 4ft. Not much to get excited about.
Now, Tuesday the 21st is a standout for the pure power, but it’s not for everyone. We’re looking at a massive 13ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the NNW. The combined energy is extreme (6752). But listen, this is a big, powerful wave. It’s too big for most, and at a reef break, it’s only for the experts. It’s a proper beast.
That big energy continues through Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd, with swells up to 16ft, but the winds get strong and gusty, making it a real challenge. The combined energy is through the roof (9509 on the 23rd morning). Unless you’re a gunslinger, stay clear.
Things settle down for the last week. Friday the 24th morning is a highlight with a clean 7ft SW swell and light offshore winds. The combined energy is strong (1918). The afternoon is also solid at 8ft. Saturday the 25th morning is similar, with a clean 8ft SW groundswell and a 14-second period. This is a reef-break dream: long period, clean, and offshore.
The final days, from the 26th to the 30th, see a mix of small, glassy mornings and afternoons with cross-on breezes. The 29th is a beauty, with a 6ft WSW swell and glassy conditions – perfect for a longboard. The 30th also has a solid 7ft SW groundswell with clean conditions.
If I’m picking the best two, it’s Thursday the 16th morning for the expert-level glassy power, and Friday the 24th morning for the clean, offshore conditions on a solid 7ft swell. The 29th morning is a close third for the glassy, smaller waves.
Rusty.
