Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what Kleinmond has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
First things first, the water temp is sitting at 59°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag. Friday, July 3rd, has some size with 7 ft of WNW swell, but it's got a short, crumbly 8-second period and a stiff 19 mph NW wind. It'll be lumpy and hard to love. The energy is moderate at 1038. By Friday afternoon the wind drops a bit to 12 mph, still offshore, and the swell is 6 ft. It's cleaner but still not firing on all cylinders. Saturday morning, July 4th, is the opposite: tiny 3 ft of SE groundswell with a nice 13-second period, and light offshore winds. It's clean, but you'll be hunting for scraps – the energy is weak at 556.
Sunday, July 5th, sees the swell building back to 5-5 ft from the west with a short period, and while the wind is a light cross-offshore, the quality is average. The energy is moderate, reaching 988 by the afternoon.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday, July 6th, is a proper standout. The morning brings a solid 5 ft of SW groundswell (13-second period) with light NE cross-offshore winds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1678, which means there’s real power in the water. This is the best looking session of the first week – clean, punchy waves for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit too strong and cross-onshore, so make the most of the morning.
Tuesday, July 7th, is another top pick. The wind goes glassy – absolutely still – with a 7-7 ft SW groundswell pushing through at a 12-second period. The energy is strong (1263-1316). That’s a clean, powerful, proper reef-break session. Kleinmond will be working beautifully.
Things start to get challenging from Wednesday, July 8th. The swell is 8 ft and the period stretches to 13-14 seconds, but the wind turns cross-onshore and picks up. The combined energy is very strong (over 2900), but with that wind, it’s going to be bumpy and hard to manage. This setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Thursday, July 9th, is a write-off for paddling – 10 ft of SSW swell with 19 mph cross-onshore winds and a massive energy reading of 3332. That’s a washing machine unless you’ve got a kite.
We then hit a quiet spell. From Friday, July 10th, through to Monday, July 13th, the surf drops to 3-4 ft, and the wind patterns are a mess – cross, cross-on, and onshore. There are a few clean windows, but nothing worth getting excited about. That's about 4 days of minimal, poor-quality surf.
The next real highlight is Thursday, July 16th. This one’s a promise from the long-range models. The morning shows a solid 10 ft of SW groundswell with a 15-second period, and a good 12 mph NW offshore wind. The combined energy is massive at 3357. That’s serious groundswell, deep-water energy. At this size, it's expert-only territory, and with that long period, it’ll be lined up and powerful at the reef. This is the best on offer for the entire outlook, but being a week and a half out, keep an eye on it. Friday morning, July 17th, also looks solid with 7 ft and offshore winds and energy at 2293.
After that, the weekend of July 18th looks like it fades back into small, messy conditions.
Overall, the clear standouts are the glassy Tuesday, July 7th for quality, and the big, powerful Thursday, July 16th for size and grunt. The rest is a lot of chop and waiting.
Stay safe.
Rusty.
