The Lowdown
Right, listen up, it’s Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Kleinmond over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so we’ve got a bit of a slow start, but don’t you worry, there’s some serious juice on the way. The first few days are a bit of a tease, but the real magic kicks off mid-week and then again later on. Keep your eyes peeled for Wednesday the 15th and the following Saturday the 25th – those are the standouts.
Tuesday morning the 14th is a bit of a warm-up. We’re looking at a small 3ft swell rolling in from the west, with a decent 11-second period. The wind is a cross-off from the NW, so it’ll be clean, but the energy is weak (239). It’s a surf, but you won’t be writing home about it. The water’s sitting at 59°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing too wild there.
Now, Wednesday the 15th is where it starts to get interesting. The morning sees a jump to 4ft from the SW with a very long 17-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 1403, so there’s some grunt behind it. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean. This is for the experienced crew, though. By the afternoon, it’s pumping up to 8ft from the SW, still with a long 16-second period and a massive 3178 energy reading. This is excellent, heavy stuff for those who know what they’re doing.
Thursday the 16th keeps the fire burning. Morning glassy conditions with an 8ft SW swell, period dropping to 13 seconds, but still plenty of power (2241). The afternoon cleans up with a light cross-off wind and a 7ft SW swell. This is all top-tier, expert-level surf.
Friday the 17th sees the wind shift to the east, messing things up a bit. The swell drops to 7ft in the morning, but the cross-shore wind makes it choppy and marginal. The afternoon is a cross-on mess. Give it a miss.
Saturday the 18th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning offers a small 3ft SW swell with a long 13-second period and clean conditions from a light WNW cross-off – a nice little window for a relaxed session. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy with a cross-on wind.
Sunday the 19th is a good one. The morning is glassy, with a 6ft SW swell and a 12-second period. The energy is solid (1182), and it’ll be clean and punchy. The afternoon gets a bit blown out, so get on it early.
Monday the 20th is a write-off with onshore winds and poor conditions.
Now, Tuesday the 21st is a big one, but it’s a double-edged sword. The morning has a 10ft SSW swell with a 15-second period and a howling 19 mph NW offshore wind. The energy is massive (4097), but it’s going to be a battle to get out. The afternoon is even bigger at 13ft from the SW, with a 16 mph cross-off. The numbers say it’s too big for this break, so unless you’re a total charger, it’s one to watch. Wednesday the 22nd is even wilder, with a 31 mph near-gale offshore wind and 12ft swell. That’s survival stuff, not surfing.
We get a bit of a lull from the 23rd to the 24th with smaller, wind-affected swell. Not the best.
Then we hit Saturday the 25th. The morning is a gem. A 4ft SW swell with a super long 19-second period, light cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The energy is 1383, which for the size is impressive. This will be a lovely, lined-up reef wave. The afternoon jumps to 8ft with a 16-second period, but the light cross-on wind will chop it up a touch.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are a mess with strong onshore winds. Tuesday the 28th has a clean 7ft SW swell but a strong 19 mph offshore wind, making it hard work. Wednesday the 29th finishes the run with a 10ft WNW swell and a fresh offshore wind, but it’s a big, windy day.
So, to wrap it up: the best bets are Wednesday the 15th and the morning of Saturday the 25th. The 15th is for the heavy hitters, and the 25th is a jewel for anyone who can read a wave. The water is about average for the season, so a 3/2 steamer will do you fine.
Rusty.
