The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Kleinmond.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The water temperature here is sitting at 59°F, which is about 1°F cooler than what's normal for this time of year – nothing too wild, just a touch chilly.
The first real action kicks off Friday morning, 17 July. Swell is 6ft from the SW with an 11-second period, and with the wind glassy from the WNW at 3 mph, it’s going to be clean. The combined energy is moderate (835). Friday afternoon stays similar: 6ft, still glassy, still very good.
Saturday the 18th looks good too. Morning has 5ft SW swell with a cross-off wind, keeping things tidy. The energy is moderate (689). Afternoon is much the same.
Sunday the 19th is a bit of a write-off. The swell bumps up to 6ft and 6ft, but the wind turns cross-on and the conditions get messy. The energy is still solid (979), but the quality drops. Not your day.
Monday the 20th is a return to form. Clean lines with 5ft SW groundswell in the morning and a light cross-off breeze. Moderate energy (652). Afternoon drops a touch to 4ft but still clean.
Now, here’s the standout: Tuesday the 21st is the pick of the first week. Morning sees 6ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, offshore wind from the N at 6 mph, and a combined energy of 1221 (strong). That’s clean, powerful, and sets up beautifully. The afternoon is even bigger at 8ft SW, glassy wind, and energy jumping to 2159 (strong). This is for experienced surfers, no doubt – too much for beginners.
Wednesday the 22nd keeps the size up: 8ft in the morning with offshore wind, but it’s a bit wind-affected with 16 mph gusts. Energy is very strong (2130). Afternoon hits 10ft but the wind goes cross-off. Still only for the experienced crew.
Thursday the 23rd: morning is excellent – 8ft SW, 12-second period, glassy offshore from the NNW, energy at 3267 (very strong). That’s a top session for experts. But the afternoon gets wild: 15ft SW with an 18-second period, energy at 11586 (very strong). That is simply too big for this break. Only the bravest.
From Friday the 24th through to Saturday the 26th, the swell stays massive (10ft to 15ft) with strong onshore winds and messy conditions. Not worth paddling out. The energy readings are huge (4074 to 9811) but it’s blown out and dangerous.
Then Sunday the 26th morning is a comeback: 8ft SSW with a 17-second period, clean cross-off wind from the NE, and energy at 5369 (very strong). That’s exceptional for experts. Afternoon is 10ft SW with a light cross-shore.
Monday the 27th is a gem – glassy conditions, 8ft SW in the morning, 15-second period, energy at 2733 (strong). Afternoon drops to 7ft with calm wind. Both sessions are excellent for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 28th is still good: 6ft SW, long 14-second period, glassy in the morning. Energy is moderate (1119). Afternoon gets a cross-on breeze and the quality drops.
Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th see the swell climbing again – 12ft to 15ft – and the cross-on winds return. Thursday afternoon has offshore wind, but the size (15ft W, 12-second period) is too big for this break. Energy is extreme (5839).
Friday the 31st and Saturday 1 August: more oversized swell (12ft–13ft) with clean offshore winds, but again, too big for a comfortable session. On Saturday 1 August morning, we get 8ft from the S with a 12-second period and offshore wind – that’s excellent for experts, energy at 3872 (very strong). The afternoon is a bit rougher.
Best on offer: Tuesday the 21st is the true standout. The morning session at Kleinmond with 6ft SSW groundswell, offshore wind, and long-period energy is pure quality. For a bigger hit, the afternoon with 8ft glassy SW is a close second, but only for the experienced.
Rusty.
