The Lowdown

Right then, let’s talk about what’s on offer at Pringle Bay. We’ve got a solid run of groundswell coming in over the next couple of weeks, but it’s a mixed bag of winds and conditions, so you’ve got to pick your moments.

The forecast kicks off with a long-period SW groundswell rolling in, but Wednesday morning is a write-off with onshore winds and poor surf. The real action starts Wednesday afternoon when the wind swings cross-offshore and the swell jumps to a solid 10ft from the SW, with a period of 15 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving – the combined energy is pumping (4439) – and it’s excellent for experienced surfers only. Thursday morning is the standout early on: glassy conditions, 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds, and clean lines. The water is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so don’t forget a good hood.

Friday morning is another glassy session with 6ft SW swell, but by then the size is dropping and the energy is moderate (835). The weekend turns messy with onshore winds from the NNW and NW, so Saturday is a complete washout. Sunday afternoon offers a respite with clean cross-offshore wind and 4ft swell, but it’s not going to blow you away.

The first true standout of the whole run is Thursday afternoon, the 16th of July. You’ve got glassy conditions, 8ft SW swell, and the bay will be handling it beautifully. The wind is dead calm, the waves will be clean and lined up. That’s the one to circle.

After that, the second week kicks off with a massive increase in size. Monday the 21st of July sees a 15ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, but it’s hammered by strong onshore winds, making it a complete mess. The energy is huge (7631), but it’s not for paddling – this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. That pattern continues into Wednesday the 22nd, with a 17ft SW swell and gale-force winds. Not surfable.

Things start to clean up again on Saturday the 25th of July. The afternoon session sees cross-offshore wind, 6ft WSW swell, and clean conditions. That’s solid. Then Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are the real pay-off: glassy and offshore winds, with a 6ft SSW groundswell at 17 seconds on Sunday afternoon. That’s very long period, which means the waves will have real shape and power, and the offshore wind is going to groom them perfectly. The combined energy is strong (2740). This is the best on offer for the whole forecast – a true standout. Pringle Bay is a beginner-friendly spot, but with these sizes and periods, it’s more suited to experienced surfers. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.

The final few days of the month keep the swell going with consistent 7ft+ WSW groundswell and offshore winds, particularly Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th of July. The afternoon of the 29th has clean offshore wind and 6ft swell – a nice way to finish the run.

So, to wrap it up: Thursday the 16th afternoon is the early standout, and Sunday the 26th afternoon is the absolute best of the whole 16-day window. The week in between is blown out and too big. Get on it when the wind plays nice.

Rusty.
