The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Betty’s Bay is cooking up over the next couple of weeks.
The window kicks off with a fair bit of chunky swell on the way, but the wind is going to be a real headache for the first week or so. It’s not all bad news though – there are a couple of absolute gems hiding in there if you’re patient.
We’ve got a solid amount of energy hitting the coast. The combined energy readings are mostly in the thousands, starting at around 2040 on Tuesday and bouncing up to over 6000 on Saturday the 22nd. That’s a lot of water moving around. The water temp is sitting at 57.6°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 2.7°F cooler, so don’t forget the extra rubber.
First up, Tuesday the 18th of August. Morning brings a 6ft SW swell at 13 seconds, with a light SE wind blowing onshore. It’s rideable but nothing special – the wind kills the vibe. The afternoon gets bigger, hitting 10ft, but the wind picks up to 12 mph, and it’s still onshore. That’s not doing us any favours.
Wednesday the 19th is a little better. Morning has an 8ft SW swell with a light S wind, still onshore though. The afternoon drops to 8ft, and the wind swings SW, going cross-shore and light. That’s a bit more workable, but still not clean.
Thursday the 20th is a write-off. The swell is huge – 11ft in the morning and 10ft in the afternoon – but with 9-12 mph onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, churned-up beast. The energy reading is a massive 3478 in the morning. This is more of a kite day than a paddle day.
Friday the 21st is a drop in size. Morning has 6.5ft from SW with a cross-onshore breeze, and the afternoon is down to 4.5ft from WSW. It’s clean enough for a grovel, but don’t expect any gems.
Saturday the 22nd is a wild one. The morning swell jumps to 10ft from SW with a cross-offshore WNW wind at 19 mph – that’s clean, but it’s big and the period is short at 10 seconds, so it’s going to be a lumpy, powerful mess. The afternoon is even bigger: 15ft from SW with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 6008 – that’s massive. The wind goes cross-shore at 12 mph. For experts only, if you’re keen on a real beating.
Now, right here is your standout. Sunday the 23rd of August is the session to circle on the calendar. The morning has an 8ft swell from WSW at 12 seconds, and the wind is glassy – ESE at a whisper. The combined energy is 2496, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. The offshore wind direction for Betty’s Bay (Bettys Bay) is NNW, but glass is glass. This is going to be clean, powerful, and absolutely firing. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so expect a few heads, but it’ll be worth the paddle.
Monday the 24th drops off. Morning is 5ft from WSW, then down to 4ft in the afternoon. Onshore wind keeps it mediocre.
Tuesday the 25th is a write-off. The swell is 8ft from SW with a long 14-second period, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore – lumpy and messy.
Wednesday the 26th of August is another serious standout. Morning delivers a 6ft WSW swell at 13 seconds, and once again, it’s glassy with a WNW whisper. Expect very good surf conditions. The combined energy is 1247. This is a smaller, more manageable size, but the quality will be top-notch. This might actually be the pick for most surfers. The afternoon drops to 5.5ft with a light cross-shore wind, still very rideable.
Thursday the 27th is small – 4
