The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let’s have a deep look at the forecast for Haardebaai. This is a sheltered reef break that needs a specific west swell to really shine, and it’s for advanced surfers only – no messing around here.
The first bit of the period is pretty quiet, but we’ve got a few windows of solid, clean surf. The standout is going to be Thursday the 16th of July. The morning is looking top-notch with a clean 8ft swell from the southwest, a light cross-offshore breeze, and a long 13-second period. The water is sitting at 59°, which is about a degree and a half cooler than usual for this time of year, so you’ll be wanting a decent wetsuit. The energy is pumping at a very strong 2494, and it’s going to be a good session for experienced lads.
Now, Wednesday the 15th kicks off with a moderate 5ft southwest groundswell. The period is a very long 17 seconds, and the wind is a clean offshore from the northwest, so the face will be glassy. The ocean’s energy is strong (1628), so it’s a solid start. The afternoon jumps up to 10ft, but the wind swings cross-onshore, making it a bit of a mess.
The next real highlight is on the night of the 21st of July. The numbers are scary: a 16ft southwest swell arriving Tuesday morning with a 15-second period. The combined energy is a massive 11794 – that’s a mountain of water. The offshore wind is fresh from the north-northwest at 15 mph, so it will be clean, but this is only for the absolute hardcore expert. The forecast says it might be too big and a bit tricky to manage, so be smart.
Heading into the final week, the 25th of July (Saturday) morning is a quiet gem. The swell drops to a clean 7ft from the southwest, but the wind goes totally glassy. Zero wind. It’s a rare moment of perfect calm. The wave energy is still very strong (2964), making it a fantastic session for experienced surfers.
For the rest of the second week, the wind is a problem. From the 22nd onwards, the southeasterlies kick in hard, blowing onshore or cross-onshore, messing up the big 10ft to 18ft swells. The 23rd of July morning is an 18ft monster from the southwest with a 15-second period, but a strong onshore breeze will make it ugly and unsafe. It’s a write-off for surfing – probably more of a kite-surfing show if the wind is onshore.
So, to wrap it up: the best bets are the morning sessions on the 16th and the 25th. The 16th is a solid, powerful, clean swell, and the 25th is a total glass-off dream. The big stuff on the 21st is for the brave (or the foolish). Otherwise, it’s a lot of waiting for the wind to play nice.
