Alright, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way at Haardebaai. This is a real reef setup, not for the faint-hearted, and it’s got a run of solid swell on the cards.
Things start off pretty clean on Sunday morning (July 5th) with a 4ft W swell, period hanging around 8 seconds, and a NNW wind blowing offshore at 12 mph. It’s a moderate breeze but clean enough to get a few in. The energy’s sitting at 449, which is moderate, so nothing that’s going to blow you away, but it’s a decent introduction. Afternoon holds similar conditions – 5ft W swell, 12 mph NW offshore, and energy bumping up to 502. Not huge, not small, just honest reef surf.
Now, Monday morning (July 6th) – this is where it starts to get interesting. We’ve got a 8ft WSW swell, period stretching out to 11 seconds, and the wind is glassy out of the E at just 3 mph. The energy jumps to 1307 – moderate but pushing strong – and it’s glassy. That’s a standout session for the advanced crew. The afternoon fades a bit with a light cross-onshore, so make the most of the morning.
Tuesday (July 7th) keeps the quality high. Morning sees a 7ft SW swell, 12-second period, offshore NW breeze at 6 mph. Clean and powerful. Then Tuesday afternoon – this is the real gem. 8ft SW swell, 14-second period, glassy conditions with a S wind at 3 mph. Energy is 2409 – that’s strong, long-period groundswell, and it’s going to wrap beautifully around the reef. This is the day for experienced surfers to score. Wednesday morning (July 8th) holds the theme with a 8ft SW swell, 13-second period, glassy again – energy at 2685. Absolutely world-class potential.
But then the wheels fall off. From Wednesday afternoon through to the end of the following week, it turns ugly. Onshore winds from the ESE and SE crank up to 25-28 mph, the swell gets chopped up, and the energy drops. There’s a stretch from July 8th afternoon all the way through to July 14th where the conditions are plain poor. A few days with rain showers and messy cross-onshore winds – not worth paddling out. That’s a good 6-day gap where the reef is just not playing ball.
Then we get a breather on Wednesday morning, July 15th. It’s glassy again, a 4ft WSW swell with a 14-second period, energy at 586. Clean and inviting. The afternoon stays clean with a light offshore. Nice little window.
But don’t get too comfortable – Thursday July 16th gets blown out by a 25-31 mph NW to NNW gale. The swell’s still there at 5-6ft, but the wind is just too strong, even if it’s offshore. Hard to paddle into that.
Now, July 17th (Friday morning) – this one is for the brave. A 10ft SW swell, 12-second period, light offshore from the WNW at 6 mph. Energy is 2844 – that’s strong. This is expert territory. Afternoon turns marginal with onshore wind, so hit it early.
Saturday July 18th is a nice mellow clean-up day with 7ft SW swell, light cross-offshore winds. Not the biggest, but clean and rideable.
And then the real standout of the whole run – Sunday morning, July 19th. 8ft WSW swell, 14-second period, glassy as glass with a NNE breeze at 3 mph. Energy at 2887. That’s a very long-period groundswell, perfect for this reef. The afternoon gets a light cross-onshore, so again, go early. This is the one to circle on your calendar.
Finally, Monday July 20th – a 7ft WSW swell, 13-second period, flat calm (0 mph NE wind, glassy). Energy at 1432. Another beautiful morning session to close things out.
Overall, the absolute standout window is Tuesday afternoon July 7th through Wednesday morning July 8th – glassy, long-period SW groundswell, and the energy is pumping. The second standout is Sunday morning July 19th. Both are for experienced surfers only when it’s over 7ft. Beginners should stay clear of those bigger days.
Water temp? I don’t have a specific number here, but given the anomaly is not flagged as unusual, expect it to be about average for the time of year.
Alright, that’s the call from Haardebaai. Keep your eyes on those glassy mornings.
