G’day, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s have a look at what we’ve got on the cards for Haardebaai. This is a sheltered reef break, so it needs the right swell to light up. Overall, it’s a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, with a few promising windows but plenty of rough, blown-out days to sit through too.
We kick off Friday the 3rd of July, but honestly, it’s a write-off. A strong 25 mph NNW cross-offshore wind is tearing into a 8ft WNW swell, and the water’s sitting at a noticeably chilly 59° – a full degree colder than average for this time of year, so you’ll feel that bite. The wave energy is moderate (1068), but the conditions are poor. Not worth paddling out.
We get a brief flicker of hope late Saturday the 4th of July. The morning is still messy, but by the afternoon, a 6ft W swell (moderate wave energy, 646) lines up with a moderate offshore breeze from the NW. The winds will be clean, making for some decent, rideable walls. It's not huge, but it's the best we’ve seen so far.
Sunday the 5th of July carries that vibe through. Clean, clear skies, a gentle offshore breeze from the WNW at 9 mph, and a 6ft W swell holding in there (wave energy 999). This is your pick of this first run. The waves will be clean, well-shaped, and with that offshore wind, sets will hold up nicely. Crowds can be around sometimes, but for a reef break with this quality, it’s worth sharing the lineup.
Things go downhill rapidly from Monday the 6th through the rest of that week. We get a big pulse of SW swell, with wave energy jumping into the strong range (1781 up to 3037), and heights between 5ft and 8ft. But the wind is all over the place – light cross, cross-on, and then strong onshore from the SE on Wednesday and Thursday. It’s just messy, lumpy, and choppy. This isn't a paddle wave; with that onshore wind and chunky swell, it looks more interesting for a kite session than a surf. Don’t bother.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th are still poor, with moderate cross-onshore winds keeping the surface ugly. The swell drops back too.
Sunday the 12th of July. This is your standout. After a long, bleak week, we get some reward. A clean, light WSW cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph meets a 5ft SSW groundswell with a long 14-second period (wave energy 1089). The conditions are rated very good, and that light wind will leave the surface glassy. For a reef break, that long-period swell is a treat – the waves will have proper shape and push. This is the session to circle.
That high carries into Wednesday the 15th of July. After a quiet Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon sees a 4ft SSW swell, but with a 16-second period – that’s very long period groundswell. Despite the modest height, the wave energy is strong (1144), and a moderate NW offshore breeze cleans it up. The waves will be fat and lined up, better for a point or reef like this. A solid, underdog session.
Then we hit Thursday the 16th of July. A serious pulse arrives: a 10ft SW swell with a 15-second period, packing very strong wave energy (3710). The wind is a fresh offshore from the NNW, 19 mph. The sets will be big, powerful, and steep – this is expert territory only. If you’ve got the skill and the nerve, it could be a day of bombs, but it’s only rated marginal due to the size and power. For anyone else, paddle out at your own risk.
From Friday the 17th, it fades again. Strong winds make the 6ft swell hard to handle, and by Saturday the 18th, it’s small, rainy, and clean but weak. The run of good surf is definitely over for this outlook.
So, to sum it up: the first crushable days are Sunday the 5th and then Sunday the 12th, with Wednesday the 15th a nice bonus. Everything else is either blown out, too big for the average punter, or flat. Keep an eye on the forecast for that Sunday the 12th – it’s the one.
Rusty.
