The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. Haardebaai is the only show in town for this outlook, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real moments if you’re patient and know what you’re looking for. The water temp is sitting at 59°F, which is about 1°F below the norm for this time of year — nothing wild, just a touch cooler than usual.
First up, the early part of the week is a write-off. The swell is there, but the wind is absolutely trash. Sunday the 23rd has some decent 8 ft to 7 ft WSW groundswell with a 13 to 12 second period, but it’s coming straight onshore or cross-on, making a mess of things. The energy is moderate to strong (1834 to 1532), but it’s just not clean. Monday and Tuesday are worse – winds are howling onshore, and even though Tuesday morning has a solid 8 ft SW groundswell (14 seconds, energy at 2706), it’s blown out. This is a reef break for advanced surfers only, and in these winds, it’s not even worth a look. Wednesday is no better.
Now, things start to get interesting on Thursday morning the 27th. A smaller, cleaner window opens up. We’ve got light offshore wind from the NW, with a 4 ft SSW swell (11 second period) and energy down to 596. It’s clean. Finally, some hope. The swell is small, but for a sheltered reef, that light offshore will make for some tidy little waves. It’s not going to be pumping, but it’s surfable. Friday the 28th is back to onshore junk.
The first real standout pops on Sunday the 30th. This is the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got a very clean, gentle offshore wind from the NW, and a solid 13 ft to 15 ft WSW groundswell with a 12-second period. The energy is massive, hitting 4479 and then 5630. This is big, powerful, long-period groundswell, and for a reef, that’s a recipe for proper, hollow waves. This is for experts only — 13 ft is well over the 8 ft mark, so it's too big for anyone but the most experienced. The morning of the 30th looks like the peak for quality, with the wind staying clean and glassy.
Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st drop back into the 8 ft to 10 ft range with moderate offshore or cross-off winds, but the quality is more marginal, and the crowd factor is there — this spot is "sometimes" crowded, and on a good day like Sunday, expect some company out at the take-off zone.
The week of the 3rd of September gets absolutely nuts. Massive, colossal swell hits. We’re looking at 28 ft to 25 ft WSW groundswell with a 16-second period. Energy readings are in the stratosphere – 39,513, 36,688. This is a dangerous, overpowered situation. The forecast itself notes the swell is predicted to be too big for this break, and I’d agree. Even for experts, that’s a survival mission. Hard pass for surfing; the cross-shore winds would make it a messy, washing machine scenario anyway. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Then, a real gem appears on Saturday the 5th of September. The swell drops back to a manageable 12 ft S groundswell (14 seconds, energy 6821), but the wind goes completely glassy in the morning. Zero wind. That’s a huge positive. For a reef break, a glassy morning on a solid, long-period groundswell from the south? The shape could be world-class. This is another expert-only day, but it’s the other true standout of the whole outlook. The cross-on wind in the afternoon will chop it up, so the early session is the call.
The tail end of the outlook, the 6th and 7th, is back to messy onshore winds and blown-out conditions.
So, the standout sessions are definitely Sunday morning the 30th of August for power and size, and the glassy morning of Saturday the 5th of September for quality and shape. The first week is a long wait, but it pays off. There’s a big gap of poor conditions from the 23rd to the 26th, then a tiny window on the 27th, before the goods arrive on the 30th. The second week has a few promising but less certain moments as we get further out, with the 5th looking the cleanest.
Stay safe out there. This reef can bite.
