The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the coming weeks at Haardebaai. This is a sheltered reef setup that needs a west in the swell window, and when it lines up, it’s a proper gem. We’ve got a bit of a quiet start, but a serious run of juice is building for the experienced crew.
The water temperature is sitting at 58.6°F, which is about 1.4°F cooler than normal for this time of year, so it’s a touch nippy but nothing wild.
We kick off on Tuesday, July 14th. The morning brings a small 2.0ft southwest groundswell with a long 16-second period, but the energy is weak (295). The wind is offshore northwest at 12 mph, so it’s clean, but it’s just not doing much. The afternoon is similar, a 2.6ft west swell with a shorter 10-second period and energy dropping to 123. It’s surfable, but ordinary. Not worth getting too excited about.
Wednesday, July 15th is where it starts to get interesting. Morning sees a 4.6ft southwest groundswell with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps to 1582 (moderate). With a gentle 9 mph offshore wind from the northwest, it’s clean and groomed. Then the afternoon steps up: 9.8ft of southwest swell at 15 seconds, energy screaming up to 4007 (strong). That’s big, clean, and powerful – strictly for experienced surfers only. This is a standout window.
Thursday, July 16th keeps the quality high. Morning delivers an 8.2ft southwest groundswell at 13 seconds with moderate-strong energy (2381), and it’s glassy – wind from the west-northwest at just 3 mph. That’s as clean as it gets. The afternoon is still clean with a 6.9ft swell and cross-off wind.
Friday, July 17th goes poor. Onshore winds from the east-southeast at 12 mph mess up a 6.9ft swell. The energy is moderate (1034), but the wind is wrong. Same story into the afternoon. Skip it.
Saturday, July 18th sees a drop. Small 2.6ft swells with light offshore winds clean it up, but the energy is weak (120–397). It’s surfable, but it’s a recovery day.
Sunday, July 19th is back to poor conditions as onshore and cross-on winds hit 6.6ft to 7.2ft swells. Not good.
Monday, July 20th is another write-off with onshore winds and moderate-sized swell (up to 7.5ft) but messy conditions.
Now, Tuesday, July 21st is a ripper. Morning is glassy – 3 mph wind from the west – and an 8.2ft southwest groundswell at 14 seconds with strong energy (2747). The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze and a 9.8ft swell, energy hitting 3226. This is excellent for experienced surfers.
Wednesday, July 22nd gets huge. A 13.1ft southwest swell at 14 seconds with very strong energy (6156), but the wind is a fresh 22 mph offshore from the north-northwest. That’s a raw, heavy day – massive and clean, but only for the hardcore. The afternoon is similar. This is borderline more for experts with big-wave gear.
Thursday, July 23rd turns ugly with strong onshore winds and an 8.2ft swell. Poor.
Friday, July 24th is a monster. A 16.4ft southwest groundswell at 13 seconds, energy reading an extreme 14434. The wind is light and cross-on, so it’s rideable but swirling. That kind of size is only for the brave – think proper experienced crew only. The afternoon stays big at 14.8ft.
Saturday and Sunday, July 25th–26th, are mostly onshore or cross-on with 8.2ft to 9.8ft swell, so messy and blown-out.
Monday, July 27th sees a drop back to 6.2ft with a clean cross-off wind in the morning, then a 9.8ft afternoon with a moderate offshore from the west-northwest at 16 mph. That’s clean and punchy.
Tuesday, July 28th starts with glassy conditions – 3 mph north wind – and a 9.8ft southwest groundswell at 13 seconds, strong energy (3579). That’s a beautiful morning for those who can handle it. The afternoon gets an 11.5ft swell, but the wind turns onshore, so it’s a half-day.
Finally, Wednesday, July 29th caps it off with a bang. Morning offers 14.8ft
