Table - best surf conditions forecast for Haardebaai over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a tricky run of surf ahead over the next 16 days at Haardebaai. It’s a sheltered reef setup that needs the right combo of swell, wind, and tide to fire, and for the most part, we’re looking at a whole lot of waiting. The forecast kicks off with a solid but brief window on Wednesday the 8th of July, but after that, things go quiet for a stretch, with only a few scattered chances later on.
Wednesday the 8th of July is the standout, and it’s a morning-only affair. Haardebaai (reef) will see a clean 8ft SW swell with a long 13-second period, and a gentle offshore NW wind at 9 mph. The combined swell energy is pumping at 2539—moderate to strong energy—and those conditions are set to deliver excellent surf for experienced surfers. The swell direction from the SW lines up with the optimum W direction for the break, so the shape should be on. That said, this is an advanced-only wave, and with that size, beginners should stay well away.
Wednesday afternoon turns sour quickly as the wind swings onshore from the SE at 16 mph and the quality drops out. From Thursday the 9th through to Tuesday the 14th of July, the surf is poor to very ordinary. The swell hangs around, but the wind is relentless—onshore or cross-onshore from the ESE or SE at 16–22 mph, often fresh and lumpy. Swell sizes range from 10ft down to 2ft, but the conditions are just blown out. The combined energy during this period dips from 3037 to as low as 157—weak energy by the end. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday the 14th afternoon with glassy conditions and a 3ft W swell (166 energy), but it’s so small and weak it’s barely worth a paddle.
Wednesday the 15th of July morning offers a fresh offshore NW wind at 19 mph, but the swell is a tiny 1ft with a very long 16-second period (195 energy)—not enough push to surf, but it shows the potential for a groundswell.
Now, Thursday the 16th of July morning gets interesting. A clean 10ft SW swell with an 11-second period rolls in, the wind is cross-offshore from the WSW at 16 mph, and the combined energy jumps to 2911. Conditions are clean, but the rating is marginal due to questionable tide. This is expert-only size—10ft is heavy, especially on a reef. The wind isn’t ideal for the optimum W direction, but it’s workable. Don’t expect a classic.
Friday the 17th through Saturday the 18th of July is a write-off—strong to near-gale onshore winds, lumpy and blown out.
Then, Sunday the 19th of July afternoon is the second true standout. Glassy conditions, a 7ft SSW swell with a very long 17-second period, and combined energy at 2766. This is quality groundswell energy, and with zero wind, it will be clean. The SSW swell is slightly off the optimum W direction, but on a reef like this, the long-period energy will wrap in nicely. Again, expert territory at 7ft. Monday the 20th of July morning offers a clean 5ft SW swell (1111 energy) with a cross-offshore NNW wind at 16 mph—decent but nothing special.
The final standout is Wednesday the 22nd of July morning. A 7ft SW swell with a massive 19-second period—very long-period groundswell—combined energy at 5735, and a moderate offshore NW wind at 12 mph. This is clean, powerful, and shaped for the reef. The period is so long it might be a little straight for some, but on a point or reef setup like this, it’s gold. Expert-only.
After that, Thursday the 23rd of July morning drops back to onshore wind and messy conditions.
The water temperature isn’t specified in the guidance, so I can’t comment on that.
Keep an eye on the Wednesday the 8th of July morning and then the Sunday the 19th of July afternoon and Wednesday the 22nd of July morning. Those are your best shots. Everything else is a lot of wind and waiting.
Rusty.
