The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the next couple of weeks for Garbage Dump. This is a classic point break that's fairly consistent and exposed to the southwest swell, and it's an intermediate-level wave. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The opening window on Friday the 17th looks promising. We’ve got a 4ft SW groundswell rolling in with a solid 11-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the southeast early. That’s a clean, mellow morning with moderate wave energy (360). It’s a good start, but the afternoon goes cross-shore and messy, so get in there early.
Saturday the 18th is a real treat. The wind is dead calm with glassy conditions, and the swell drops a touch to 3ft from the WSW, period 10 seconds. The energy is moderate (218), but with those clean conditions, it’ll be a super fun, user-friendly morning. The afternoon sees a light cross-onshore breeze, so again, the morning is the call.
Sunday the 19th is a bit of a letdown. The morning is clean enough but with a cross-shore wind, and the swell is 3ft with a 11-second period, energy 363. The rating is marginal, so it’s a bit of a wait-and-see. Afternoon turns choppy.
Monday the 20th is back on track. The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze, 3ft SW swell at 11 seconds, and clean conditions. The energy is still moderate (269), but it’ll be a very pleasant session.
Tuesday the 21st is a curious one. The morning is glassy with a tiny 2ft SW swell, but the period jumps to a very long 15 seconds. That’s a groundswell with energy at 243. For a point break like this, that long period will likely produce some beautifully shaped, lined-up waves, even if the size is small. It’s a real novelty.
Now, hold on to your board for Wednesday the 22nd. The swell jumps to 6ft from the WSW with a 13-second period, but the wind is a fresh 30 km/h from the NNW. The wave energy is strong (1592), but the conditions are lumpy and cross-shore. This is not a paddle-friendly day. The afternoon sees the swell hit 8ft, energy 1777, but still with cross-onshore wind. For those with a kite, this setup might be more interesting than for us surfers.
Thursday the 23rd is a redemption. Morning offshore wind from the ESE, 5ft WSW swell at 12 seconds, clean conditions, and moderate energy (673). This is very good, and the crowd factor is "sometimes," so you might have some company but it’s not a circus.
The standout window is Friday the 24th. This is the best on offer. The morning delivers 7ft of WSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The wave energy is strong (1953). The afternoon holds at 7ft with a 14-second period, still clean. This is a proper, powerful, lined-up point break session. If you’re an intermediate or above, this is your day.
Saturday the 25th gets big and messy. The swell hits 8ft in the morning, 10ft in the afternoon, with a 16-second period, but the wind is howling from the south at 30-40 km/h. Wave energy is extreme (3592 and 5983). That’s too much wind for clean surf. Expert-only, if that.
Sunday the 26th cleans up nicely. The morning has 7ft WSW swell at 14 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions. The afternoon goes offshore with 6ft and 14-second period. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers again. The wave energy is strong (1784 and 1368). A very solid day.
The first week of August is a bit of a mixed bag. Monday the 27th has a 4ft swell but a fresh 35 km/h wind, so it’s blown out. Tuesday the 28th is tiny with a very long 19-second period, but the wind is howling. Wednesday the 29th is similar story. Thursday the 30th shows a bit of promise with a 3ft swell and offshore wind in the afternoon, but it’s marginal.
The final highlight is Saturday the 1st of August. The morning is glassy, with a 3ft SW groundswell that has an incredibly long 20-second period. The wave energy is strong (1161). For a point break, that period will create some absolute gems of waves, even though the size is small. It’s excellent for experienced surfers. A perfect way to close out the run.
Overall, there are some fun small windows, but the true standouts are Friday the 24th and Saturday the 26th for the bigger, cleaner groundswell, and Saturday the 1st of August for the glassy, long-period perfection.
Rusty.
