Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Stent Road. This is a heavy reef and point set-up, so you better know what you’re doing – it’s strictly for advanced crew. The water temp is sitting a bit warmer than usual for this time of year, about one to two degrees above normal, so it’s not crazy but you’ll notice it’s a tad toastier.
The pattern starts off pretty intense. Monday July 6th has a solid 10ft WSW groundswell rolling in, with a very long 14-16 second period. There’s a heap of energy in the water (3071 to 4976), but the wind is a fresh cross-off from the east. The catch is the tide conditions and the rain make it feel messy. Not the peak moment.
Tuesday July 7th morning is the standout of the whole run. Clean, clear skies, light E offshore wind at only 9 mph, and still a solid 8ft WSW swell with a 15-second groundswell period. The combined energy is strong (3051), and the rating says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. This is glassy, powerful, and juices up the point. Crowds are possible here – it’s often got people – but for that kind of quality you’ll deal with it.
Wednesday July 8th drops off fast. The swell shifts to a short-period 8-second S windswell, fresh cross-off winds, and the energy is weaker. Poor conditions by Thursday with a massive 15ft S swell and near gale winds. That’s not surfable – more like a washing machine. For the rest of that week it’s a mix of smaller WSW groundswell but always with strong winds, keeping it marginal. Friday July 10th through Saturday July 11th sees the swell drop to 4-6ft but the fresh cross-off winds keep it from getting clean.
Sunday July 12th picks up again. Light breeze from the SE, clean conditions, and 5-6ft WSW groundswell at 15-16 seconds. The energy is moderate (1081-1397) and the forecast says excellent for experienced surfers. That morning and afternoon are both solid – the light wind is a big positive.
Monday July 13th still has some clean 4ft WSW swell but lighter winds. Then from Tuesday July 14th onward, the wind cranks onshore from the northeast, blowing out a dropping swell. The rest of the second week is mostly poor, with strong winds and small, weak swell. There is a glimmer on Friday July 17th morning with a 4ft WSW swell and offshore E wind, but it’s light rain and moderate breeze – still worth a look for the dedicated. Sunday July 19th also has a little 4ft swell with offshore ENE wind, but again showery.
Overall, the best of the bunch is Tuesday July 7th morning. That’s where it all lines up: size, direction, period, and clean offshore wind. Sunday July 12th is your other bright spot with lighter winds and solid groundswell. The rest of the window is either blown out or too small. Get on it when the stars align, because this spot doesn’t mess around.
Stay safe out there.
