The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s in store for the local stretch here. We’re talking about Stent Road, a reef and point setup that needs a solid SW groundswell and an offshore wind to really fire. It’s an advanced wave, and it’s consistent, so when it’s good, it’s good.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. We’ve got a powerful, long-period SW groundswell rolling in, but the wind is just cruel. Monday morning (24th August) sees 15 ft of WSW swell with a 15-second period, but it’s a messy cross-onshore, so the wave energy is massive (8908) but it’s going to be a chopped-up, blown-out mess. That theme continues through that first week – plenty of size, but the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the scores low. There’s a brief moment on the 28th where the wind goes cross-offshore, but the swell drops a bit in period and the wind is a strong breeze, making it a clean but very windy, challenging day.
Honestly, you’re better off waiting for a window around the end of the month. The standout, and I mean the real standout, is going to be Thursday 3rd September. The afternoon is the pick of the whole period. The wind swings light offshore from the SSE, and the swell jumps up to 15 ft from the W, with a combined energy of 3207. It’s a clean, powerful wave, but that’s big—this is for expert surfers only. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Then, get this—Friday 4th September morning is also a beauty. A light NNE offshore breeze, an 12 ft WSW groundswell with a 15-second period, and the energy is pumping at 4760. The waves will be clean, powerful, and lined up. This is the kind of day Stent Road was made for. Expect crowds, though, as it’s a spot that’s often busy when it’s on.
The following week is more of a mixed bag with stronger winds and smaller, shorter-period swells, but those two days in early September are the ones to circle. The first week’s onshore winds make it a tough go, but that second week has real promise—just keep an eye on the wind shifts.
