G’day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Stent Road over the next couple of weeks. It’s a reef-and-point set-up that needs a good SW swell and offshore winds to fire, and we’ve got a pretty wild ride ahead. The water’s sitting at 60°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first solid action kicks off on Monday the 6th of July. We’ve got a serious 10ft SW groundswell rolling in with a period of 14 seconds, pumping a massive energy reading (3037). The morning has a fresh ESE breeze blowing offshore, so it’s firing and clean. That swell is big – over 8ft – so this is advanced and expert territory only. By Monday afternoon, it gets even punchier with a 16-second period and energy jumping to (5060), winds ease to a moderate offshore from the E, and conditions are described as exceptional for expert surfers. This is the standout of the whole forecast.
Tuesday the 7th still offers excellent waves for experienced surfers. Swell drops a bit to 8ft from the WSW with a long 15-second period, and a gentle SE breeze makes it clean in the morning. Energy remains high (2849). The afternoon is a little smaller at 7ft (1748 energy) but still clean and fun.
Wednesday the 8th takes a turn. The swell switches to a short-period S pulse (8 seconds), and the wind goes cross-shore and fresh from the S, making for lumpy, choppy surf. Energy drops to (1388/1249). This one is not worth paddling out for.
Thursday the 9th is a write-off. The swell jumps to 13-15ft from the S, but winds are near gale-force from the SSE, hitting 31-37 mph. The energy is off the charts (5446 to 6807), but it’s just a mess. Only for the kamikazes, and even then, it’s poor.
Friday the 10th sees a cleaner but still tricky set-up. The swell drops to 7ft from the WSW with a very long 17-second period, and energy is still solid (3235). Winds are a fresh SSE cross-off, so it’s clean, but that long period may make the point break a better bet than the beach. The afternoon goes smaller at 5ft (1736).
Saturday the 11th is small and clean-ish, with 5-4ft WSW swell (1091-1219 energy), but the period is still long at 14 seconds. A moderate SE breeze keeps it tidy, but it’s not firing.
Sunday the 12th is a nice little window. The morning brings 6ft from the WSW at 16 seconds, with a light ESE breeze making it clean (1392 energy). This is excellent for experienced surfers, but the afternoon goes glassy with a slight south wind and cross-shore bumps.
Monday the 13th to Tuesday the 14th fades and gets blown out. Swell drops to 4ft then 2ft, and winds get strong and onshore. Not worth it.
Wednesday the 15th to Thursday the 16th sees a new swell build from the WNW and W, around 7-8ft, but winds are cross-onshore or onshore and choppy. Poor to marginal at best.
Friday the 17th is a surprise. The morning turns glassy with a 6ft W swell and a period of 10 seconds. Winds go glassy from the SSE (1114 energy). This is excellent for experienced surfers and a real treat if you can get out there.
Saturday the 18th brings back the WSW swell at 8ft with a 16-second period and a gentle offshore from the ESE in the afternoon (2761 energy). Excellent for experts and clean.
Sunday the 19th is another big swell day – 10-12ft from the WSW, with fresh offshore winds from the ENE and E. Energy is massive (3060 to 2104). This is solid, expert-only groundswell. The period drops to 10 seconds on Sunday afternoon, so it might be a bit more walled up.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st fall apart with near-gale winds and onshore slop. The last few days are a no-go.
If you’re picking the best, it’s got to be Monday the 6th afternoon – that 10ft WSW groundswell with a 16-second period and a moderate offshore breeze is the pick of the entire run. The water is a touch warmer than usual, which is nice. Stent Road is consistent and exposed to the SW, so it handles these swells well, but it can get crowded, so keep an eye out.
Rusty.
