The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Stent Road in old-school feet and miles. This is a proper exposed reef and point break that loves a south-west groundswell, and we’ve got a few solid pulses coming through, but the wind’s gonna be the talk of the lineup. Some real gems, some sessions you’ll want to sleep through.
Water temp is 57°F, pretty average for the season, nothing special.
We start the week with some size but messy vibes. Monday morning the 17th of August has a 8-foot WSW swell with a long 15-second period, packing serious power – energy’s at 2897 (strong). A 16 mph SSE cross-off breeze keeps the surface clean, but the reports flag marginal conditions and tide issues. Afternoon drops to 6 feet, wind goes cross-shore south, and it gets choppy. Not your best bet.
Tuesday morning the 18th is the true standout of the first week. That 6-foot WSW swell (14-second period, 1431 moderate energy) meets a light 6 mph SSE cross-off. The word is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and they’re right. Clean, solid, and that reef and point will handle the long-period groundswell nicely. Crowds can be likely, but the advanced rating thins the herd.
Wednesday morning the 19th keeps the clean run with a 3-foot swell and a 17-second period (1651 energy). That extra-long period means smooth, groomed waves, but expect gaps between sets. Afternoon picks up to 7 feet with the same clean cross-off, so there’s surf all day.
Thursday morning the 20th looks glassy – 6 feet with a 3 mph WSW onshore. That’s barely a breath, making paddling easy, but the notes mention tricky tide conditions. Still, offshore wind and 6 feet is a solid shout.
From Friday the 21st through Sunday the 23rd, it’s a write-off. Wind swings cross-on or onshore, the swell gets short and choppy, rain sets in, and the quality hits zero. Saturday afternoon even throws up a 7-foot W swell with a 7-second period and 19 mph winds – lumpy junk. A three-day gap of poor conditions, where the beach setup would be better for kite gear than a proper paddle.
Monday the 24th of August brings a beast. A 13-foot WSW groundswell, 15-second period, and energy at 6445 (very strong). The wind is WSW at 9 mph onshore. For experts only. If you’re not comfortable with double-overhead, sit this one out. Tuesday the 25th stays big at 12 feet with a 19 mph cross-shore N wind, making it lumpy. Wednesday the 26th drops to 8 feet but still messy.
The next real highlight is Friday morning the 28th of August. Wind goes light offshore from the east at 6 mph, and we’ve got a 7-foot WSW swell (7-second period, 721 moderate energy). It’s a short-period swell, so punchy and a little crumbly, but with offshore wind and “expect very good surf conditions” noted, this is a fun session. Saturday morning the 29th is even better: 8 feet from the SW, 8-second period, 938 energy, and a light NE cross-off. Clean and inviting.
We roll into September on Tuesday the 1st with a lovely 3-foot WSW groundswell and a 16-second period (858 energy), plus a light SE cross-off. That long period makes the small size feel full and playful at the point. Clean and easy.
The standout days are Tuesday morning the 18th of August and Friday morning the 28th of August. Tuesday wins for the combo of quality groundswell, light clean wind, and that reef/point handling the long period. Friday is right there thanks to the offshore breeze locking in your lines.
Rusty.
