The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Stent Road has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a rough start, so don’t get your hopes up for the first few days.
The week kicks off with a fair bit of grunt in the water – we’re talkin’ a solid 8ft of WSW groundswell on Thursday the 16th, with a very long 15-second period – that’s a lot of energy (3284). Trouble is, the wind is a cross-on mess at 12 mph, and the report is calling it marginal at best. Thursday afternoon looks much the same, just a little less juice (2919). That continues right through until Sunday the 19th. The swell drops a little to 7ft, but it’s still a cross-onshore shambles with fresh breezes making it lumpy and choppy. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for a wave.
Now, things start to turn around on Monday the 20th. The swell drops to 7ft from the WSW, still a nice 14-second period, and the magic happens – the wind goes light offshore from the E at just 3 mph. That’s clean surf, made for experienced surfers. The combined energy is still moderate strong (1579), so you’ll feel the power, but the conditions are the best we’ve seen by a mile. Monday afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off.
Tuesday the 21st is a glassy beauty. The swell is down to a more manageable 5ft, 13-second period from the WSW, and the wind is dead still in the morning – glassy as a lake. Energy is moderate (715), but the quality will be there. Tuesday arvo gets a little cross-shore, but it’s still light.
We’ve got a little hiccup toward the end of the week. Wednesday the 22nd brings a shift – the period drops right off to just 7 seconds, and the wind is onshore at 12 mph. That’s a messy, weak windswell. Thursday the 23rd is better period, but it’s light cross-on and only 4ft – just marginal.
The real standout window looks like it opens up again on Friday the 24th. Morning session sees 5ft of clean, long-period swell (13 seconds) with a light cross-off breeze from the ESE. Beautiful. The energy is moderate (701), but the conditions are excellent.
Then, hold onto your boards, because the end of the month is looking seriously promising. Saturday the 27th onward, the swell stays consistent around 6ft to 8ft from the WSW, with a long 14-second period, and the wind is clean cross-off. Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th morning are absolute standouts for experienced surfers – the 29th morning pumps out a hefty 10ft (4522 energy) with clean offshore conditions, but that's expert territory only. That run of clean, powerful surf continues through to the 31st of July, with offshore winds and excellent conditions.
My pick of the whole forecast? That Monday the 20th morning session. The first real clean day after a run of junk. Glassy, 7ft groundswell, offshore wind – it’s a redemption day. And for the long-range look, the whole last week of July is a block of consistent, clean, powerful swell. That’s where the real magic lives, but it’s a little further out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
