The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's coming up at Stent Road. This is a heavy reef and point setup for advanced surfers only, so if you're not at that level, this one's a watch-and-learn spot.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The good news starts Tuesday morning, the 14th of July. We've got a clean 5 ft swell from the WNW with a light breeze, making it a solid morning. The combined swell energy is moderate (465). However, the wind switches in the arvo and the quality drops right off for the rest of the week.
Now, the standout, and I mean the real standout, is Wednesday the 15th of July. This is the one to circle. We're looking at a massive 10 ft to 12 ft swell from the WSW with a very long period of 15 to 16 seconds. The combined energy is massive (4896 to 5441). This is serious, powerful groundswell. For a reef and point like this, those long-period swells will produce proper, lined-up waves. But listen, anything over 8 ft is expert territory, and this is that. The light cross-shore wind Wednesday morning is manageable, but the afternoon gets a bit of chop. Still, the raw power and quality of the swell is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. Expect it to be pure, heavy, and for the brave only. Crowds are often here, and on a day like this, that’ll be the case.
From Thursday the 16th through to Saturday the 18th, forget it. It's messy, choppy, and onshore. Not worth a second look.
Sunday the 19th shows a glimmer. A clean 7 ft swell from the WSW, long period (16-17 seconds), with a clean cross-off wind. The energy is strong (2980). The conditions are clean, but the forecast calls it "marginal," so it could be tricky with the tide. Still a much better option than the days before if you're desperate for a paddle.
Then, Monday the 20th of July is another very solid call. The swell drops to a more manageable 6 ft to 6 ft from the WSW, still a nice 14-second period, but the wind turns light and clean from the SSE. This is described as excellent for experienced surfers. The energy is still moderate (1161-1370). This is a great window for the strong intermediate who wants to step up, or the expert who wants a powerful but less terrifying wave.
Tuesday the 21st is even smaller but cleaner. A 4 ft swell with a light offshore breeze from the ESE. Super clean waves, but the energy is lower (652). A nice session if you want a cruiser.
From the 22nd to the 25th, it's a run of small, clean to marginal conditions. Swells between 3 ft and 4 ft. Good for a longboard or a fish, but nothing to write home about. The wind is mostly light and clean, so the water will be glassy.
The action picks back up on Sunday the 26th of July. A clean 5 ft swell from the WSW with a 14-second period and light winds. The energy is good (1296). Another excellent session for experienced surfers.
After that, from Monday the 27th into the end of the month, it's a mixed bag of dirty onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The last few days are best avoided.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute pick of the 16 days is Wednesday the 15th for the big swell enthusiasts. For a more user-friendly but still powerful session, target Monday the 20th. The rest is either small and clean or messy.
Rusty out.
