The Lowdown

Right folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at this one spot for the next couple of weeks. There’s a gap right now, but it fills in quick.

The first real action kicks off on Saturday, August 1st, and it starts with a bang. Punihos, a reef and point set-up, will be absolutely pumping. The swell is sitting at 12 ft from the WSW with a 13-second period and a massive 3794 combined energy. That’s some serious power. The water temperature is 58°, which is about 1° warmer than normal for this time of year, so nothing too wild there. The wind is offshore from the SE at 15 mph, keeping it glassy. This is heavy, heavy stuff though – over 8 ft, so it’s strictly for the experienced crew. Crowds are possible here, so get in early. The Saturday afternoon session drops a touch to 8 ft, but still solid with the same offshore flow.

Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd are a write-off. The wind swings around, the swell drops, and the quality dies. Tuesday the 4th morning is still messy, but the afternoon is a redemption story. The swell picks back up to 5 ft from the WSW at 15 seconds, with a glassy offshore breeze from the SE. That’s clean, long-period juice. The combined energy is 1938, still a decent punch. Wednesday the 5th is a gem – morning has 5 ft swell with a light offshore from the ESE, and the afternoon goes dead glassy with a 5 ft WSW swell. That’s a score.

After that, we hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 6th through to the start of the second week is small to marginal. The 7th and 8th are mostly poor, though the 8th afternoon has a clean 6 ft NW swell, but the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit jumbled. The 9th and 10th bring some size back – 10 ft on the 9th morning from the SSE, clean but with a short period again. This is big, expert-only territory. The 10th is similar, with 10 ft, but the wind is stiffening, making it less appealing.

The 11th and 12th drop right back to small, weak, and cross-off wind. The 13th is a total washout with strong wind and tiny waves. There’s a flicker of life on the 14th with a 6 ft, 17-second WSW groundswell, but the wind is a messy cross-shore. The 15th and 16th finish with more size – 7 ft to 10 ft – but the wind is onshore or cross-shore, chopping it up.

The standout is Saturday, August 1st. The morning session at Punihos is the best on offer – big, powerful, and clean. The Wednesday, August 5th glass-off is the other real highlight for those who want a less menacing wave. Stay safe out there.
