Table - best surf conditions forecast for Jacobs Bay over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's have a look at what's on the table for Jacobs Bay.
The water's sitting at a chilly 55°, which is a good 5° colder than usual for this time of year, so you're gonna want a thicker wetsuit. The forecast is a real mixed bag, with a lot of solid swell but some pretty nasty wind setups to work around.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn't even show up until the morning of Wednesday the 19th. We've got a solid 10 ft swell from the southwest, but the problem is it's coming with a 19 mph cross-shore wind. The wave energy is pumping hard at 2185, but it's going to be lumpy and messy. That afternoon's the same story, just a bit smaller. Thursday the 20th morning is cleaner, with a cross-off wind and a 10 ft SW swell, but again, this is big, powerful surf (3318 energy), so it's for experienced surfers only. The wind will freshen up and cross-shore again by the afternoon.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are a write-off thanks to onshore winds and chop. Saturday afternoon sees a massive 12 ft, 12-second SW swell rolling in with 3624 energy, but that cross-on wind will make it a beast.
We get a glimmer of hope on Sunday the 23rd morning. Clean, cross-off winds with a 10 ft SW swell (2584 energy). It's still a big wave, but the conditions will be clean. The afternoon chop comes back in though.
The next real standout is a week later, on Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning session is looking special. We've got a 7 ft SW groundswell, a 13-second period, and the wind is going glassy at just 3 mph from the west. That's a rare combo, and with 1413 energy, it's a solid, powerful swell. The wave comment says "excellent for experienced surfers," and I'd agree. If you can get out there, this is the best window we have. The glassy conditions on Thursday the 27th morning are also worth a mention for those looking for smaller, 4 ft waves from the WSW.
We get one more wildcard on the 31st of August. The morning has a clean, 8 ft SW swell (1891 energy) with a light offshore wind from the north-east. That's another good, clean window for the more experienced crew.
Right at the end of the run, on the 1st of September, there's a bit of a forecast with some light rain and a 7 ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-on, so it's nothing special.
To sum it up, the best bet is the glassy morning of Wednesday the 26th of August. That's your window for clean, powerful waves. The 31st of August morning is a solid backup. Everything else is either too big, too windy, or both.
Rusty.
