The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Jacobs Bay.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the gears are turning. The first real surf to get excited about kicks off on the morning of July 15th. The water’s running a touch cold at 56°, which is a couple of degrees cooler than usual for this time of year, so you might want a thicker wetsuit.
The standout session of the whole 16-day window is looking like Wednesday afternoon, July 15th. We’re talking a solid 8 ft of clean, lined-up swell from the SW, riding a very long 17-second period groundswell. That’s proper energy moving through, with a combined energy of 3353. The wind is a light cross-offshore, keeping things clean. This is the one for experienced surfers only – it’ll be too much punch for beginners. The quality is unreal.
The next morning, July 16th, is still pumping with 8 ft swell from the SW, though the period drops to 13 seconds. Still excellent for experienced crew, with clean cross-off winds.
After that, we drift into a few days of cleaner but smaller surf. Saturday morning, July 18th, is a glassy gem with 5 ft of S swell and a 12-second period. It’s not huge, but it’ll be fun and clean. The combined energy is moderate at 916.
Then on Sunday morning, July 19th, the swell kicks back up to 7 ft from the WSW, again with a nice 12-second period and clean cross-off wind. That’s a solid session for the experienced.
Hold on though – there’s a big spike coming. Tuesday morning, July 21st, the models are showing a massive 10 ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 4664. The wind is glassy. Problem is, that’s too big for Jacobs Bay. This one is for the absolute experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a beast. The same goes for the following days – July 22nd and 23rd are pumping with 15 ft and 12 ft swells, but it’s all just too much for this spot. Best to watch from the shore or take up kite surfing if you’ve got the gear.
By Friday, July 24th, the wind turns nasty and the surf is messy, so give it a miss. Saturday the 25th cleans up a bit, but the swell is still strong at 8 ft and the wind is onshore or cross-shore. It’s not the best.
The final week sees inconsistent, marginal conditions. The Sunday morning, July 26th, has a 10 ft WSW swell, but again, it’s oversized for this break. After that, the surf drops back to 7 ft - 7 ft, but the wind is a mix of cross and cross-off, so it’s not the quality we saw earlier.
Long story short: your best bet is Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, through to Saturday morning, July 18th. That’s where the magic is. After that, it’s either too big or too messy for a beginner-friendly wave.
Rusty.
