Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us.
We’ve got a classic build-up coming. This week kicks off small and clean, then cranks up into some serious size by mid-week before easing back down. The real standout is going to be Monday morning, July 6th, at Jacobs Bay. That morning you’re looking at 7 ft of WSW groundswell with an 11-second period and clean offshore wind from the east. The water is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than what we’re used to for this time of year. This is prime for any experienced surfer – solid punch, good shape, and the offshore breeze will keep the faces smooth. Crowds can be on it sometimes, but with that quality, it’ll be worth sharing the peak.
Sunday afternoon, July 5th, is a nice warm-up. Glassy conditions with a 4 ft WSW swell. Tiny but sweet for a longboard or a foiled-out session. Energy is moderate (426), but the clean air makes up for it.
Monday afternoon the wind swings cross-shore and the swell drops a touch, making it a bit messier. Tuesday morning, July 7th, brings another genuine highlight. We’ve got 7 ft of SW swell with a 12-second period and cross-offshore wind from the southeast. That combination (1444 combined energy) will produce some powerful, well-shaped waves – again, definitely one for the experienced crew.
Wednesday, July 8th, and into Thursday, July 9th, the swell really muscles up. By Thursday morning we’re looking at 10 ft of SSW swell with a 14-second period. The energy is massive (6120). But here’s the kicker: at this size, Jacobs Bay is going to be too big for most. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’ll be a handful. The cross-offshore wind on Thursday morning will keep it clean, but the sheer volume of water moving is intimidating.
Friday, July 10th, the swell hangs at 10 ft but the period drops to 13 seconds and winds go light. Still too big for this break really, but the energy (2764) is still very strong. If you’re a hardcore charger looking for big, clean faces, Friday morning might be your window, but you’ve been warned.
After that, we start to see a downward trend. Saturday, July 11th, the swell drops to 7 ft, and with an 11-second period and cleaner winds, it becomes more manageable for strong intermediates. Sunday, July 12th, drops further to 5 ft. Nice morning session but nothing special.
Then things go a bit flat. From Monday, July 13th, through Wednesday, July 15th, we’ve got a real lull. Small, weak, and ordinary – 2 ft to 4 ft, with cross-shore or onshore winds. A few glassy windows on Tuesday morning, July 14th, but the swell is tiny (3 ft). A gap of a few days with not much to shout about.
By Saturday, July 18th, there’s a late spike. 8 ft of S swell with a 12-second period and proper offshore wind from the ESE. That morning session (2722 energy) will have some excellent, powerful lines for experienced surfers. Sunday, July 19th, eases to 6 ft and stays clean with offshore wind – a very good way to wrap the run.
Through the end of the window, Monday, July 20th, it’s back to small, ordinary conditions.
So, if you’re picking one session, make it Monday morning, July 6th at Jacobs Bay. Tuesday morning, July 7th, is a close second. The big stuff from July 9th to 10th is a spectacle, but only for the brave.
Rusty.
