Right, mate. Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up. We’ve got a solid run of southwest groundswell headed our way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The first few days look decent, but there’s a big pulse of energy mid-week that’s going to shut the door on most of us. Let’s get into it.
We kick things off on Monday the 6th of July with a bit of a mixed bag. Clean conditions are a couple of days off, but the ocean is waking up. The real start of the action is Tuesday the 7th. Tuesday morning at Jacobs Bay is where you want to be. The water is sitting at 58°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget the booties. We’ve got a clean 7ft southwest swell rolling in, and the wind is glassy – dead calm – which is a major plus. The period is a nice and long 12 seconds, giving the waves some proper push and shape. That combined energy is a strong 1439, telling you there’s plenty of power in the water. Conditions are excellent.
Tuesday afternoon the wind picks up to a cross-shore, making it lumpier. Wednesday the 8th of July is another standout. Early morning, we’ve got a 8ft SW swell with a 13-second period and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The energy jumps to 2430, which is getting seriously punchy. This is good for experienced surfers.
Now, here’s where it gets tricky. From Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th, the swell pumps up to 10ft and even 8ft from the SSW. The wind stays favourable, but the wave height is over 8ft, which puts it firmly in the ‘experts only’ category. The energy readings are through the roof – hitting 3532 on Thursday morning. It’s going to be big, powerful, and a bit of a beast. If you’re not an absolute charger, give it a miss.
Sunday the 12th of July is a nice reset. The swell drops back to a much friendlier 4ft from the south, period shortens to 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy again in the morning. It’s an ideal time for the beginners to have a crack. The energy is a moderate 670, so nothing too intimidating.
We then hit a bit of a flat spell. Monday the 13th has a small bump, but it’s mostly tiny and poor through to Wednesday the 15th. The waves get small, the wind gets messy, and it’s not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 16th of July is another promising morning. A 6ft WSW swell with a 14-second period and glassy conditions – that’s clean, lined-up surf for experienced surfers. Energy is a solid 1193.
After that, it gets ugly. Friday the 17th through Monday the 20th is a write-off. Strong winds – up to 28 mph – and lumpy, chopped-out conditions. The swell is there, but the quality is gone. It looks more like a kite-surfing setup than a paddle surfing one.
Finally, a word of caution for the very end. On Tuesday the 21st of July, the forecast shows massive 12ft swell with a very long 15-second period and offshore wind. The energy is astronomical at 4507. This is a huge, powerful groundswell. At a beach break like Jacobs Bay, that long period will make it break straight and fast – a real handful. Only the absolute best should even think about it.
So, the pick of the bunch is hands-down Tuesday morning, July 7th, at Jacobs Bay for the clean, glassy conditions. The real standout for size and power is the big pulse on Thursday morning, July 9th, but that’s only for the experts.
Rusty.
