The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what Yzerfontein’s got cookin’ over the next couple of weeks. We’re in for a bit of a wild ride, with some serious power early on, a lull, then a monster swell to finish.
The week kicks off with a bang, but it’s not for everyone. Thursday the 20th is seeing a solid 10ft SW groundswell (13 seconds) smashing in. The combined energy is a hefty 3334 – that’s a lot of ocean moving. But honestly, for the Yzerfontein setup, that’s just too much. It’s a beast for experts only, and with a 12 mph cross-shore wind from the south, it’s gonna be a bumpy, challenging beast at that. Friday the 21st settles a touch, but the wind stays messy and the quality’s not there for a good paddle. We’re basically waiting for something better.
And then, bingo. Saturday morning the 22nd is your sweet spot. The swell drops right down to a clean 4ft from the SSW, period’s a fun 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a mellow 615. But the star of the show is that wind: glassy. Dead calm. Northwest at 3 mph. This will be the most user-friendly, clean surf of the whole run. For the intermediate crew and anyone wanting a session without a fight, this is it.
Sunday the 23rd morning is another standout, but for different reasons. The swell jumps back up to 7ft from the WSW with a 13-second period (combined energy 1765). That’s a proper wave. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSE, which will groom it up nicely. That’s excellent, clean power for the experienced surfers. It’s getting big, but still within the wheelhouse of a strong intermediate.
The middle of next week is a write-off. Monday and Tuesday the 24th & 25th are plagued by strong offshore winds and messy, choppy conditions even when there’s swell. There’s a bit of a lull in quality until Saturday the 30th, where we get another glassy morning, but the swell is only 5ft and the energy is lower. It’s a solid option, but not a standout.
Now, if you’re an expert and you’ve got your wits about you, mark your calendar for Monday the 31st of August. That morning the ocean is going to be absolutely thumping. A massive 12ft WSW swell with a 13-second period is forecast, pushing the combined energy to 3813. That’s a colossal amount of water moving. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NE – it’ll be clean, but incredibly powerful. This is a big-wave day, and with Yzerfontein being a beach and reef setup, it’s going to be thick, heavy, and only for the truly experienced.
Beyond that, the first few days of September get blown out again with strong NNW winds. There are a few small windows on Thursday the 3rd, but nothing to get excited about compared to what’s before it.
So, if you want clean, easy waves, get out there Saturday the 22nd morning. For the experienced crew chasing power and size, the Sunday the 23rd morning is your best bet. And for the big-wave chargers, that Monday the 31st is the one to watch.
Stay stoked, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
