Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at Yzerfontein over the next couple of weeks. It’s a beach-and-reef setup, exposed to the swell, and it’s got a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde personality in this forecast – some real gems, but also some absolute monsters that will only be for the brave.

Water temp is sitting at 56°, which is a solid 4° colder than usual for this time of year. That’s a noticeable chill, so don’t forget the thicker rubber.

We kick off with a bit of a quiet start. Sunday the 12th has some small, cross-on energy, nothing to write home about. The first real window of opportunity shows up on the morning of Monday the 13th. It’s small, only 3ft from the SSW, but the wind is dead calm – glassy. The combined energy is weak (271), so it’s a mellow session, but the lack of any wind makes it clean and inviting. That glassy condition hangs into the afternoon with a similar 3ft swell.

The standout day is Wednesday the 15th. The morning session is where it’s at. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW, and here’s the kicker – the period is a very long 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, meaning deep, powerful lines. The combined energy is a solid moderate (1045), and the wind is glassy from the SSE. This is going to be clean, well-shaped, and with good gaps between sets for paddling out. For an intermediate surfer, this is the best on offer. The afternoon bumps up to 8ft from the SW, but the wind swings cross, and the energy jumps to very strong (3001). That’s too big for most, and the quality drops off.

Thursday the 16th stays big, with 8ft and 8ft surf from the SW. The energy is still very strong (2135 and 1697), but the wind is on the cross, making it a bit of a handful. This is expert territory.

We get a brief reprieve on Saturday the 18th. The morning is clean with an offshore E wind and a 3ft, 14-second swell from the SW – a beautiful combo. The afternoon is glassy again with a 5ft, 13-second swell from the SW. The energy is moderate (1037), and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is another top pick for the second week.

After that, a big, long-period groundswell starts to build. From the 21st through the 23rd, the swell runs 6ft to a massive 15ft, with periods hitting 17 seconds. The energy readings are off the charts – over 2200, even hitting 6639. The problem is, the forecasts are repeatedly saying the swell is too big for this break, and the wind starts to get messy. From the 24th to the 26th, it’s a full-on, blown-out, dangerous swell. The 24th morning has a 16ft swell from the SW with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 11669 – that’s insane. It’s glassy, but it’s a no-go zone for anyone but the most hardcore tow-in crew. The 25th and 26th are just as big, with strong onshore winds creating a total mess. Honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The last day, Monday the 27th, drops back to a more manageable 7ft, but the wind is still messy and cross.

So, to wrap it up: your best bets are the glassy, clean morning of Wednesday the 15th for the best quality, and the clean slots on Saturday the 18th for a solid, fun, intermediate-friendly wave. The big stuff at the end is just a warning for the groms and the old boys.

Rusty.
