The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our little stretch of coast. The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag, with some real gems to chase, but also some absolute monsters that you’ll want to watch from the beach.
The first proper opportunity kicks off on Saturday the 22nd of August. It’s a bit of a tease, really. The swell is 4 ft from the SSW, pretty weak, with the combined energy at only 579. It’s a marginal day, surfable but nothing to write home about, especially with a light W wind. The water is a nippy 55°, which is more than 5° colder than usual for this time of year, so that’s a very notable chill factor. You’ll be wanting a thick suit.
The first real standout is Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The sky is clear, and we’ve got a solid 8 ft WSW groundswell with a period of 13 seconds. The combined energy is a beefy 1851, so there’s plenty of push. The wind is coming from the SSE at 6 mph, a light cross-offshore breeze that will keep the faces clean for experienced surfers. This is definitely the best on offer in the first week.
Monday the 24th sees the swell drop back to 6 ft, but the wind is a cross-shore S at 9 mph, making for a bit of chop. It’s a pass for me. Tuesday the 25th brings a bigger, longer-period swell (7 ft at 14 seconds from the SW, energy of 1919), but the wind is a moderate cross-offshore, so you might find a few. The quality is marginal.
Wednesday the 26th is a real beauty for the early birds. The wind is offshore from the E at only 6 mph, and the swell is 5 ft of clean SW groundswell. The energy is 1286, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a window to get excited about.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th is where things get a bit wild. Saturday the 29th is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds. But Sunday the 30th? The swell is predicted to be a massive 15 ft from the WSW. The combined energy is an enormous 7069. That is way too big for Yzerfontein, and only for absolute experts, if anyone. The wind is cross-onshore too, so it’s a day to watch the show.
The following week, the first of September is a ripper. Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, has a clean 8 ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period. The energy is 2580, and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the ESE. That’s another top-tier session. Wednesday the 2nd is messy.
The pattern then goes into a big, dangerous cycle. The 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th of September are all dominated by huge swells over 12 ft, with the 6th hitting a staggering 18 ft. The combined energy for that Sunday is 13969, which is just insane. These are all too big for this break, and winds are often messy. It’s a clean-out period.
So, your two best bets are the Sunday morning of the 23rd of August and the Tuesday morning of the 1st of September. Pencil those in.
