Table - best surf conditions forecast for Yzerfontein over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Yzerfontein over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a real mixed bag, with some beautiful windows of clean surf and some serious, teeth-rattling size that’ll keep the lineup very quiet.
The week starts off pretty quiet. Monday the 13th is a bit of a non-starter. The morning is flat calm, glassy even, with a tiny 3-ft SSW swell, but the combined wave energy is a weak 271. It’s just not got any grunt. That glassy calm wind is a tease, but the waves are barely there. The afternoon gets a slight cross-onshore, and it’s still marginal.
We have a bit of a lull into Tuesday the 14th. The swell hangs around the 3-ft mark from the W, but the wind goes messy – cross-shore in the morning and onshore in the afternoon. The energy is still low, around 260. Not worth the paddle.
Now, Wednesday the 15th is where things start to get interesting. The morning serves up a glassy, clean 5-ft SW swell. The big story here isn’t just the jump in height, it’s the power. The combined energy rockets up to 1152 – that’s moderate, but it feels solid. The period is a long 16 seconds, a proper groundswell. At a spot like Yzerfontein, which is a beach and reef setup, that long period can make the waves bend and stand up beautifully. This is a standout for the intermediate crew. The afternoon, however, gets a touch messy with a cross-shore wind and the swell hitting 8-ft, which is starting to get serious.
Thursday the 16th sees the swell holding strong, around 8-ft to 8-ft from the SW, with a period of 13 seconds. The energy is still high, between 1697 and 2417, but the wind is cross to cross-onshore, so the surface won’t be as clean as Wednesday morning. This is more of a challenge.
Friday the 17th drops a bit, with a 7-ft SW swell in the morning. The wind goes cross-offshore from the SSE, which cleans it right up. The period is a shorter 11 seconds, so it’s a bit weaker, with energy at 999. It’s rideable, but not the best of the week.
Then we hit a sweet spot on Saturday the 18th. Morning has a clean 4-ft swell from the S with a 12-second period. The wind is light cross-off, and the energy is a healthy 609. By the afternoon, it goes glassy with a 4-ft SW swell (13s, 713 energy). This is a perfect, small-wave session for anyone who wants a silky, uncrowded surf. The water is about average for this time of year, no major anomaly to report.
Sunday the 19th is another cracker for the more experienced. The morning delivers a clean 7-ft WSW swell, period of 12 seconds, and a cross-off wind from the NNE. The energy is up at 1155 – that’s some proper push. This is another standout, with clean, powerful lines. The crowds at Yzerfontein can show up sometimes, but with this kind of condition on offer, it might be worth an early start.
The run into the second week gets chaotic. Monday the 20th drops off with a cross-shore wind and dropping swell. Tuesday the 21st, though, is a monster. We’ve got a 10-ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period and a colossal energy reading of 4596. The wind is clean and cross-off. But honestly, 10-ft at a beach-and-reef break with that much period? That’s only for experts, and even then, it’s going to be heavy, possibly closing out. The next few days, from the 22nd to the 26th, are all too big – 10-ft to 16-ft – with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. The energy readings are off the charts, over 12,000 at one point. This is kite-surfing territory for sure.
The last few days, starting Friday the 24th, show a drop. The morning is glassy with a 5-ft SSW swell, period of 12 seconds, and energy of 1324. That’s clean and powerful for the experts, but the afternoon and Saturday the 25th are back to massive, dangerous size. From the 27th onwards, it settles back down into the 7-ft to 8-ft range, but the winds are cross-shore, so the quality is just average.
All up, if you’re picking your moment, destination Wednesday morning, July 15th for that clean, building groundswell, and Saturday the 18th for a glassy, smaller day. Sunday the 19th is another excellent call if you’re after power. The rest of the window is either too small, too windy, or just too damn big for most of us.
Rusty.
