The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Yzerfontein. It’s a bit of a mixed bag to start with, but we’ve got some real gems further out if you’re patient.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Sunday the 19th is a no-go with a messy 4ft SW swell pushed around by a cross-shore wind, and the combined energy is weak (737). The water is sitting at 58°, which is about a couple of degrees colder than you’d expect for this time of year – feels a bit nippy, and the surf is just marginal.
Monday the 20th shows a bit of promise first thing. The morning brings a clean 6ft SW swell with a light offshore NNE wind, making for some tidy lines. The energy is moderate (675). The afternoon gets a bit blown out, so get on it early.
Now, Tuesday the 21st is a *standout*. The morning session is looking proper. We’ve got a solid 6ft SW groundswell with a long 14-second period, arriving with a clean SSE cross-off breeze. The combined energy is strong (1473), and these are excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is a beach-and-reef setup, so that long-period swell will wrap in nicely. The crowds can pop up here sometimes, but with quality like this, it’s worth the company.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are a bit of a washout with onshore or cross-shore winds and building swell, keeping things choppy and hard to manage. The combined energy spikes up (1430-1491) but it’s messy.
Then we get to Friday the 24th. This is a monster. The morning shows an 12ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is massive (4749). The wind is clean and cross-off. However, this is simply too big for this break. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it’s a big, heavy beast. The afternoon is a little smaller at 10ft, but still a proper handful.
Saturday the 25th is still big, with an 8ft SW swell, but it’s clean and cross-off all day. The energy is still strong (2318-2023). It’s a solid, powerful day for the experienced crew.
Now, Sunday the 26th is another *standout*. The morning is glassy clean with a 7ft SW swell and a 12-second period, blowing in with a light ESE cross-off. The combined energy is strong (1520). This is a beautiful, clean session for the more experienced surfer.
The week after that, from the 27th of July onward, the swell drops back a bit, but there are still some clean windows. Monday the 27th is clean but smaller, and Tuesday the 28th morning has a weird one – a 10ft S swell with a short 10-second period, but it’s glassy. The combined energy is high (2386), but it’s a bit of a wall of water for a beach-and-reef spot. The 29th and 30th of July have glassy mornings with clean 5ft to 4ft SW swells, making for a fun, smaller-scale session.
The final weekend, the 1st and 2nd of August, looks a bit ordinary again with onshore winds and a drop in quality. The 1st of August morning has a clean 4ft SW swell, but it’s not a patch on the earlier stuff.
So, overall, the best of the best is Tuesday the 21st of July morning and Sunday the 26th of July morning. Get in the water early, and you’ll be laughing.
Rusty.
