Table - best surf conditions forecast for Yzerfontein over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid 16-day window on the cards for Yzerfontein, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first few days are a goer for experienced surfers, then we hit a lull, and finally a massive, proper-sized swell rolls in that’s only for the brave. Let’s break it down.
Friday the 10th of July kicks things off with a 8 ft SSW swell, period 13 seconds – that’s a grunty groundswell. The combined energy is strong (2583). Wind is a cross-off SE breeze, so the morning session at Yzerfontein (a beach and reef setup) will be clean. It’s a bit big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s a solid option. The afternoon stays clean with a similar 8 ft swell, but the wind swings cross-off from the south.
Saturday the 11th is looking sweet. The swell drops to 7 ft from the SSW, still a 12-second period, and the wind is offshore from the ESE in the morning. That’s clean, glassy conditions (1506 combined energy). The wave comment says this is excellent for experienced surfers, and I’d agree. The morning is your best bet; the afternoon gets a cross-shore from the south, which brings a little chop.
Sunday the 12th tapers off a bit. The swell is 5 ft on Sunday morning, with an offshore ESE breeze and clean surf (753 energy). It’s a good, manageable size for most. The afternoon sees a drop to 5 ft and a cross-shore wind, making it a bit average.
From Monday the 13th, the surf really winds down. Swell drops below 3 ft for a few days, with weak energy (below 300). Tuesday the 14th morning is glassy with a WNW wind and 3 ft of swell, but it’s tiny. There’s a solid 3-day gap here with no real recommendations – just little waves.
Then Wednesday the 15th afternoon, we start to see a pulse. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the WSW, with a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is high (1717), but the wind is a cross-shore from the south, so it’s a bit lumpy. Thursday the 16th morning is the standout here: 8 ft SW swell, 13 seconds, and a clean cross-off SE wind. The energy is strong (1972), and it’s excellent for experienced surfers. That’s the pick of the mid-week.
Friday the 17th gets messy with a 30 km/h cross-shore wind in the afternoon, creating lumpy, poor conditions. Avoid that.
Now, here’s the big news. Saturday the 18th afternoon, a massive 12 ft WSW swell hits, with a 13-second period and a clean cross-off wind. The energy is enormous (4810). The file says it’s too big for this break, and I reckon that’s right – it’s pushing into expert-only territory. The same goes for Sunday the 19th, with a 10 ft SW swell and glassy morning conditions (2680 energy), but again, too big.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are a write-off with poor wind and lumpy conditions.
But then, from Wednesday the 22nd, the swell is building again. Thursday the 23rd afternoon has a 12 ft WSW swell, and Friday the 24th is absolutely colossal: a 23 ft WSW swell in the morning, with a 15-second period and a clean offshore wind. The combined energy is off the charts (19502). The files say it’s too big for the break, and they’re spot on. This is only for the most experienced big-wave specialists, and even then, it’s sketchy. The same goes for Saturday the 25th morning, with a 13 ft swell and 16-second period (13287 energy).
So, the best on offer is Saturday the 11th morning for a clean, offshore session on a solid 7 ft SSW swell, and Thursday the 16th morning for a strong, clean SW swell. The big stuff at the end is a spectacle, but it’s not a paddle-out for most of us.
Stay safe out there.
