The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s going down at Yzerfontein over the next couple of weeks.
Water temp is 58°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time, so grab a thick suit. It’s a beach and reef setup, consistent enough, exposed to swell, and can get crowded sometimes.
The run starts Saturday, July 18th, with a 3ft SW groundswell (13 sec) but the wind is onshore from the W at 6 mph. Energy is moderate at 645 – not worth rushing out for.
Sunday the 19th is average. Morning has 4ft SW with a cross-on NNW breeze at 9 mph making it bumpy. Afternoon swell hits 6ft but the wind stays cross, and energy climbs to 844 – still nothing special.
Monday morning July 20th is the first bright spot. Dead calm – glassy conditions. Swell is 6ft from the SW with a 9-sec period and energy at 591. Not huge, but that glassy surface will make it fun.
Tuesday the 21st – the morning is a standout. 5ft of SW swell, 14-sec period, and glass again. Energy is strong at 1134. This is clean, powerful groundswell – excellent for experienced surfers. Afternoon gets bumpy with a cross-on breeze and the swell jumps to 8ft (energy 1910), so the morning is the call.
Wednesday the 22nd is a mess. 7ft SW with a moderate NNW cross-wind at 12 mph, and by afternoon it’s 7ft with a 16 mph onshore blow – total chop, score zero.
Thursday the 23rd is average – 7ft to 6ft with cross and onshore winds.
Friday July 24th – big swell warning. Morning hits 10ft from the SW (14 sec, energy 3936) with a light SSE cross-offshore breeze – clean but way too big for this break. Expert only, or more of a kite session.
Saturday July 25th is a winner. Morning has 8ft SW (13 sec, energy 2013) with a SE cross-offshore breeze – clean and powerful. Excellent for experienced surfers. Afternoon holds 7ft (12 sec) still clean. Best weekend window.
Sunday July 26th – morning glassy with a light offshore ENE breeze and 5ft SW (11 sec, energy 801). Clean and fun. Afternoon drops to 3ft but with a 16-sec period, though the cross-wind spoils it.
Tuesday morning July 28th is the absolute king. Swell is 8ft from the SW, period 15 seconds, energy 6162 – massive groundswell. Wind is light offshore from the ENE. Exceptional but for experts only. The power is immense.
The rest of the week and into August is big and windy. Wednesday and Thursday see 10ft to 8ft SSW swells with 22–25 mph SSE winds – clean but only for the hardcore or kite crew.
Friday July 31st morning is good: 8ft SSW (13 sec, energy 2505) with moderate offshore E wind at 12 mph – clean and strong.
Saturday August 1st is 12ft from the SSE – too big. Sunday August 2nd brings 8ft SW with a 17-sec period, energy 3791, and a light offshore – excellent for experienced surfers, but that long period will make it racey and better on the reef than the beach.
Best calls: Tuesday July 21st morning for glassy fun, and Tuesday July 28th morning for a serious, world-class bomb. Get out there if you’ve got the nerve.
Rusty.
