The Lowdown
Right, folks, let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks. This is a full-on Yzerfontein report, and for the first few days, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid foundation of swell, but the wind is going to be the main character early on. The best window is a specific Sunday morning followed by a few other standouts, so let’s get into it.
Alright, Saturday the 21st is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a 7ft SW swell, but it’s coming in with a cross-on breeze and it’s choppy. The energy is there (1410), but it’s just not clean. You’d be fighting it.
Sunday the 22nd is still a bit touch-and-go. Saturday morning drops to a 4ft SSW swell with a light onshore wind, energy is moderate (541). The afternoon is even smaller at 4ft with a longer period (13 seconds) but an onshore wind. Not great.
Now, here’s our first real shout. Sunday morning, the 23rd. That’s the one. Yzerfontein is going to switch on. We’ve got a 7ft swell from the WSW, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the SSE. The combined energy is a meaty 1676. The water is currently 55°, which is a whopping 5° colder than normal, so you’ll want a thick suit. It’s a beach-and-reef setup, and with that size and direction, it’s going to be pushing some serious power. This is for the experienced crew, as it’s over 5ft. The afternoon on the 23rd gets a bit choppy with a cross-shore, so make the morning session.
Monday the 24th is similar. The morning has a 7ft SW swell with cross-off wind (1149 energy), but the afternoon gets messy again. Tuesday the 25th is a real tease. Solid 7ft SW swell with a long 14-second period and cross-off winds, energy is 2256. It’s clean, but the report says the tide might be questionable, which can mess with the shape at this break. Keep an eye on it.
Wednesday the 26th morning is a good call. The swell drops to 5ft from the WSW, but it’s coming with a clean offshore wind from the ESE. That’s the good stuff. The period is 13 seconds, and the energy is 941. It’s a smaller day, but it’ll be much more user-friendly and clean.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th morning are small and only so-so. But then, Friday afternoon the 28th is a surprise packet. The swell is only 5ft from the WSW, but the period is a very long 14 seconds, and the wind is completely glassy. Zero wind. The energy is 1026. That’s a rare combo for a clean, long-period groundswell. It’s a good option for the more experienced guys, as long-period swells can be a bit straight at a beach setup, but at that size, it’ll be a lot of fun.
Saturday the 29th is a write-off. Strong onshore winds are going to ruin it.
Now, Sunday the 30th. This is a warning. The swell is predicted to be 13ft from the WSW with a 12-second period. The energy is a massive 4124. The wind is clean, but the finder is very clear: this is too big for the break. This is a big-wave day for experts only, and even then, it’s pushing it. The afternoon is 10ft (3196 energy) and cross-shore, still too big.
The start of the next week comes back into the zone. Monday morning the 31st is a solid 6ft WSW swell with cross-off wind and 1022 energy. Good, clean, and more manageable. Tuesday morning the 1st of September is another standout. We’ve got a 6ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a clean offshore wind from the east. The energy is 1468. This is a classic setup for Yzerfontein. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on breeze, but the morning is the pick.
The wind gets messy again on Wednesday and Thursday the 2nd and 3rd, with strong cross-shore winds. Friday the 4th of September morning is back to a clean, 5ft S swell with a good cross-off wind and 1059 energy. A good option.
The final weekend, the 5th of September, looks like a bit of a downgrade with smaller, shorter-period swells and onshore winds. Not worth the trip.
So, the standout sessions are: Sunday morning the 23rd for the power and clean conditions, and Friday morning the 28th for the glassy, long-period perfection. Tuesday morning the 1st of September is also a strong contender for a clean, offshore day. Water is well below average, so don’t forget the rubber.
Rusty.
