The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
The outlook for Yzerfontein is a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, with some fun windows for the experienced crew, but a lot of the time the winds and size are going to be working against us. The first real action I’d be looking at is on Wednesday morning, the 26th of August. That’s a standout.
Wednesday, 26th August morning is your best bet early on. Yzerfontein is a beach and reef setup, and we’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the SW, with a solid 13-second period. The wind is offshore from the ESE, light at 6 mph, so those waves are going to be super clean. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 1317. This is a good one for experienced surfers, as the quality is excellent. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The rest of the first week is a bit of a struggle. Morning sessions on Thursday, the 27th, and Friday, the 28th, are small and the wind is messy. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are a write-off with onshore winds and building swell. By Sunday afternoon, the swell hits 10ft from the WSW, but it’s onshore and just too big and raw for this spot.
Monday, 1st September afternoon is worth a mention. The swell is 8ft from the SW at 12 seconds, with a light cross-on wind from the NW. The energy is moderate at 1530. It’s not perfect, but it’s the most promising thing in that stretch.
Then we hit a rough patch. From the 2nd of September right through to the 5th, the wind is howling out of the NNW and NW, and the swell is huge and messy. The 3rd of September afternoon sees a massive 16ft swell from the SW with a combined energy of 7149, but with onshore winds, it’s a total write-off for paddle surfing. For a beach and reef setup, you’d be looking at this for kite surfing, not a surfboard.
Saturday, 5th September afternoon is one to watch. It’s a longer-range call, so less certain, but the swell is 8ft from the SW with a very long 14-second period. The wind is a gentle cross-on from the SSW. That long period makes it better suited for a point or reef, but here at Yzerfontein, it’s going to be a powerful, albeit a bit choppy, session. The energy is strong at 2644.
The final week fades out with smaller, cleaner swells, but nothing that jumps out as a must-surf session. Tuesday the 8th of September morning is a clean 5ft from the S, but it’s small.
Overall, the best bet is Wednesday morning, 26th August for clean, offshore conditions. The second standout is Saturday afternoon, 5th September, for a bigger, more powerful swell, but it’s a bit further out and the wind isn’t as clean.
Rusty.
