The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Yzerfontein surf.
Water temp is 56°F, which is 4°F colder than usual – that’s a serious chill, so suit up properly.
First real chance comes Friday morning, 17 July. Clean cross-off breeze, swell 6ft from the SW with an 11-second period, combined energy of 729 (moderate). It’s a decent start, but nothing to get wild about.
Now, Saturday afternoon (18 July) is where it gets good. Glassy conditions, clear skies, a 5ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and energy at 942 (moderate to strong). For a point and reef spot, that long-period groundswell means better shape and more drive. That’s your first standout session – clean, fun, and lined up.
Sunday morning (19 July) is also glassy with a 4ft SW swell, 12-second period, and 727 energy. A little smaller, but still clean.
After that, the wind gets messy from Monday afternoon through Tuesday – cross and light chop creep in, and the swell drops. Wednesday morning, 22 July, kicks up to 10ft from the WSW with a 14-second period and 3400 energy. That’s too big for this break – experts only, and even then, it’s pushing it. Plus a moderate cross-shore makes it ugly big.
Thursday 23 July brings a 7ft swell but the wind is still not friendly. Not worth it.
Friday 24 July is a monster: 13ft SW swell, 16-second period, 7056 energy. That’s way too big. Saturday 25 July is similar with 10ft swells and near-gale cross-off winds – looks more like a kite-surfing day than a paddle session.
You’ve got a gap of a few days with poor or dangerous conditions. The next real chance is Monday morning, 27 July. Offshore wind from the east at 6 mph, a 5ft SW swell with a 13-second period, and 1391 energy (strong). Clean, powerful, and manageable for intermediate and above. That’s your second standout.
Tuesday 28 July drops off into smaller, weaker surf. Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July are mostly cross-shore and marginal.
Then Friday morning, 31 July, picks up again: a 7ft SSW swell with a 10-second period and 1172 energy, light cross-off breeze. Clean and solid, but on the bigger side – experienced surfers will love it.
Finally, the best of the lot: Saturday afternoon, 1 August. A 4ft W swell with a massive 21-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell – and combined energy of 2363, with glassy conditions. That’ll produce long, clean, powerful walls peeling perfectly down the reef. Sets might be spaced, but the quality will be unforgettable.
So to sum it up: your standout sessions are Saturday afternoon (18 July), Monday morning (27 July), and Saturday afternoon (1 August). Everything else is either small, windy, or just too big to surf safely.
