The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Yzerfontein over the next two weeks. It’s a tale of two extremes – slim pickings at the start, and then some serious beast-mode swell.
We start off Wednesday the 19th of August – nothing doing. The swell is 8ft from the SW at 12 seconds, but it’s crossed up with a 12 mph south wind and the wave energy is strong but sloppy at 2073. Not worth the paddle.
Thursday the 20th is the first real call. The morning glass-off at Yzerfontein (beach and reef) shows 10ft of SW groundswell, a solid 13-second period, and light SSE wind making it clean. Wave energy is very strong at 3020. That’s big – over 8ft – so this is for experienced surfers only. The afternoon gets lumpy but that morning is a winner.
Friday the 21st backs off to 7ft SW with an 11-second period. Wave energy is moderate at 1242. Morning is cross-shore and clean enough, but nothing special. The afternoon turns onshore.
Saturday the 22nd – forget it. Only 4ft SSW and messy, wave energy weak at 509. Leave the board at home.
Sunday the 23rd is another standout – the best of the week. Morning has 8ft of WSW groundswell at 13 seconds, with a light SSE offshore breeze. Clean and powerful, wave energy very strong at 2329. Again, expert-only at that size. The afternoon gets cross-shore and fades.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th sit around 5–7ft. Tuesday morning gives you 7ft of SW swell with a long 14-second period and clean SSE wind. Wave energy is strong at 2050. That’s a fun session for intermediates, but the long period might make the beach breaks a bit straight – stick to the reef sections for better shape.
Wednesday the 26th through Friday the 28th are all average – moderate energy between 900–1700, cross-shore breezes, and nothing to get stoked about. Swell stays around 4–7ft.
Now, from Saturday the 29th of August onward, we get a massive pulse. Saturday morning is 12ft SW at 14 seconds, wave energy a massive 4347. The afternoon jumps to 13ft with a 22 mph SSE cross-off – wave energy hits 6901. Sunday the 30th is 10ft with a 28 mph SE wind, also clean but enormous. This is huge, dangerous surf – only for the experienced crew. Those strong winds and big swell make it a potential kite spot more than a paddle session.
Monday the 31st drops to 5–7ft, with fresh, clean SE wind. Wave energy is moderate at 918–1315. Workable for a session, but not a highlight.
The first days of September see another spike. Wednesday the 2nd has 10ft WSW at 12 seconds, and Thursday the 3rd hits a massive 16ft WSW at 14 seconds, wave energy at 8675. That’s huge – again only for experts. Those long-period groundswells will work best on the reef to avoid closeouts.
So the real standouts are Thursday the 20th and Sunday the 23rd of August – both mornings offer clean, powerful, expert-level surf.
Rusty.
