The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
This is a classic case of the surf building up to a real treat, with a few sessions that are going to be absolutely firing. The first few days are a bit of a slow burner, but hang tight, because the middle of the week is where the magic happens.
We start off on Tuesday, 14 July. The morning ain’t much to write home about with a weak 3ft swell from the west and a light cross-on breeze. The afternoon cleans up to glassy conditions, but the swell is still small. Keep your expectations in check.
Now, Wednesday, 15 July. That’s the one. The morning is a standout. Yzerfontein is looking at a clean 4ft swell from the WSW, and get this – the wind is dead calm, glassy. The period is a very long 17 seconds, which means proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is pumping at 1113 (moderate), but it’s the quality that’s the winner here. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, so get out there if you know what you’re doing. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy with a cross-shore wind, and the swell pushes up to 8ft, which is getting big, so it’s more of a challenge.
Thursday, 16 July, brings another good morning. The swell is a solid 8ft from the SW, with a clean cross-off breeze. This is excellent for the experienced crew. The water temp is sitting at 56°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so grab a decent wetsuit.
Friday, 17 July, stays pretty consistent. The morning has a 6ft SW swell with clean, cross-off winds. The afternoon is similar. Good, solid, surfable conditions.
Saturday, 18 July, sees the swell drop right back to 3ft in the morning, but it’s glassy. Not much push there. The afternoon picks up again to 5ft with a cross-shore wind.
Sunday, 19 July, is the second standout. The morning is clean with a 6ft SW swell and a cross-off breeze. The energy is strong at 1163 (moderate). This is another “excellent” call for experienced surfers. It’s a quality, clean session.
The first week is all about those Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday mornings. The standout is Wednesday morning, 15 July, for the combination of the long period groundswell and the absolute glass.
Then we hit a bit of a gap. Monday, 20 July, is okay but nothing special, and it gets a bit messy. Tuesday, 21 July, sees the swell jump to 10ft, but the wind is a strong cross-shore and the forecast says it’s too big for this break. Wednesday, 22 July, is a write-off with strong winds and a messy 12ft swell. Thursday, 23 July, has a 7ft swell but with a cross-shore wind, making it average.
After that rough patch, Friday, 24 July, is a real highlight. The morning has a 8ft swell from the WSW with a clean cross-off breeze. The combined energy is 2439 (strong). This is rated excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds up nicely too with a 7ft swell and a clean breeze.
The weekend of 25-26 July is a bit mixed. Saturday morning is a messy 5ft, but the afternoon has a big 8ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period and a cross-shore wind. The energy is 3512 (very strong). That’s a lot of power, but the wind isn’t ideal. Sunday is a bit of a washout with strong winds.
Monday, 27 July, is another good one. The morning is clean with a 5ft WSW swell and a cross-off breeze. The energy is 1498 (strong). This is excellent for the experienced crew.
Tuesday, 28 July, and Wednesday, 29 July, are messy with strong winds and big, lumpy swell. Not good for surfing.
So, in the second week, the standouts are definitely Friday, 24 July, and Monday, 27 July, for the clean, powerful conditions. The absolute best of the whole forecast is that Wednesday, 15 July morning session – it’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Keep an eye on the crowds at Yzerfontein, as it can get busy sometimes.
Rusty.
