The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The long-range charts have been lighting up for Yzerfontein, but this 16-day window is a real mixed bag. We’ve got some solid pulses of energy coming through, but it’s not all going to be clean, and there are a few days where you might want to find something else to do.
The water here is running about 55°, which is a solid 5° colder than what you’d expect this time of year. That’s a noticeable drop, so bring the thickest suit you’ve got and maybe some booties.
The first real chance we get is Friday morning, the 21st. The swell has backed off a bit to 6ft from the SW with an 11-second period, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, which is key. It’s going to be clean out there. Yzerfontein is a beach and reef setup that’s fairly consistent, so the combo of a dropping swell and clean conditions should make for some fun waves. The energy is moderate (982), so not pumping, but the quality will be there. This is a good one to start with.
Saturday the 22nd dawns with a real treat. The wind drops out completely, leaving it glassy. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the SSW, and with that kind of condition, Yzerfontein will be looking its best. The energy is only moderate (541), so you’re not going to get a barrel, but for a longboard or a fun mid-length, this will be pure joy. It’s a standout for the sheer beauty of the conditions.
We’ve got a bit of a lull and some cross-shore winds for the next couple of days. Sunday the 23rd morning is interesting, though. The swell jumps back up to 7ft from the WSW with a 13-second period, and we’ve got a light cross-offshore wind. The energy is strong (1940), and the call is for excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is a bigger, more powerful wave, so it’s not for the faint of heart, but for those in the know, this is a proper session. The long period does mean Yzerfontein’s reefs and points will handle it better than a straight beach break.
Monday the 24th looks average with onshore winds picking up, and Tuesday the 25th morning is another decent option. It’s back to 7ft from the SW with a long 14-second period. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore again, so the surface will be clean. The energy is strong (2065). This is another one for the experienced crew. A bit more power behind it. But don’t sleep on it.
By Wednesday the 26th, the swell settles down a touch to 6ft, but the wind is forecast to go glassy again in the morning. A long-period SW swell at 12 seconds, clean and calm. That’s a very good morning in my books. A great balance of size and clean conditions.
The weekend after, the 28th and 29th, gets a bit messy. A bigger, longer-period swell (8ft at 15 seconds) comes in, but the wind is onshore or strong cross-shore, and the surface will be chopped up. It’s all a bit of a washing machine. Not the time to be out there unless you’re just watching. The strong energy (2753) will be there, but the quality will be poor.
The 30th of August looks a lot cleaner. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore and the swell eases to a consistent 8ft from the S, but the period has dropped to 8 seconds, which is short and a bit jumbly. Still, it’s clean. This is a more challenging, steep wave. It could be fun for the rippers.
Then we hit a real dead zone. The 31st is poor. Small, weak, and onshore. There’s nothing to get excited about. The 1st of September, Tuesday morning, gives us a brief reprieve with a glassy 4ft SSW swell at a long 13 seconds, which is excellent for the reefs. But the afternoon brings a monster. An 12ft SW swell at 15 seconds is forecast to hit, and it will be far too big for Yzerfontein. That’s expert-only territory at best, and likely just too dangerous for this spot.
The 2nd of September is one to skip. Strong cross-onshore winds and a big, lumpy 10ft mess. That’s not surfing, that’s survival. The 3rd and 4th have some energy but the winds stay tricky, keeping it in the marginal category.
Overall, the standout windows are Saturday the 22nd morning for the glassy, clean waves, and Sunday the 23rd and Tuesday the 25th mornings for the bigger, powerful, clean conditions for the more experienced surfer.
There’s a significant gap from the 31st of August through the 2nd of September where the forecast goes to a blank run. Poor winds and nothing worth paddling out for. It happens, but looking at this forecast, it won’t stay like that for long.
The setup at Yzerfontein with those larger, windy days will be more interesting for the kite surfers than for us paddle surfers.
Stay stoked.
