The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our stretch of coast.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it’s gonna take a bit of patience to find the really clean windows. The water is sitting at 54°, which is a full 6° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a serious chill, so don’t even think about ditching the thickest wetsuit you own.
The first real standout is shaping up for Thursday morning, August 20th. Yzerfontein is looking at a powerful 10ft swell from the SW, with a solid 13-second period. The wind will be a light SSE cross-off, which is a dream for keeping things clean. The combined swell energy is a hefty 3174, so there’s plenty of water moving around. But look, at 10ft, this is strictly for the experienced crew. Beginners, sit this one out. The direction is a perfect match for the break’s optimum, and with that cross-off, the sets should be holding up nicely.
We get another crack at it on Sunday morning, August 23rd. Same story with the size – 10ft from the SW, 12-second period, and a light SSE cross-off wind keeping the surface glassy. The energy is still massive at 2329. This is another one for the experts only. The break is a beach and reef setup, and with that kind of power, you’ll want to pick your line carefully. It’s a spot that can get a crowd, so keep an eye out.
Now, for a slightly different vibe, jump ahead to Wednesday morning, August 26th. The swell drops to a more manageable 6ft from the WSW, still with a nice 12-second period. The wind turns truly glassy – dead calm, with a combined energy of 1167. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but the size is more inviting. It’s a great window for the intermediate crowd who want clean, lined-up waves without the 10ft intimidation factor.
The final week gets a bit messy. We see a massive pulse of energy on Sunday, August 30th, with a 10ft SW swell and a 17-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell, energy reading 4641. But the wind is onshore and choppy, so while the power is immense, the surface will be a mess. The following Monday and Tuesday (Aug 31 and Sep 1) are written off by strong winds and poor conditions.
The absolute pick of the whole 16-day window? It’s a toss-up between the Thursday 20th and Sunday 23rd mornings for the big-wave hunters, and the Wednesday 26th morning for the rest of you who want clean, powerful waves without the terrifying size. Get the timing right, and you’ll be rewarded.
Rusty.
