The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the full 16-day picture for Yzerfontein.
We’ve got a classic West Coast setup on our hands. The week kicks off with a building swell, but it’s the back half of the outlook that’s really got my attention. The water is sitting at 55°, which is a solid 4° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s a proper cold bite, so don’t even think about skipping the thick steamer.
Wednesday 15th is a write-off, honestly. We’ve got a 4ft WSW swell coming in, but it’s cross-shore and the energy is already high (1116), but it’s not clean. The afternoon jumps to 8ft, but it’s cross-on and messy. Give it a miss.
Thursday 16th morning is where we start to see a shift. The swell drops a touch to 8ft from the SW, but here’s the thing – the wind is light and cross-offshore from the SSE. That’s clean. The energy is pumping (2381), and the period is a solid 13 seconds. This is a proper groundswell. It’s a bit much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, this is a solid window. The afternoon sees the wind swing a bit, so grab the morning session.
Friday 17th morning is another good one. Swell eases to 6ft from the SW, still with that clean cross-off wind. Energy is down to 787, but it’s a fun, manageable size and the surf report is calling it very good. The afternoon gets a light cross-on, so again, morning is the move.
Saturday 18th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is small and cross-on, but the afternoon brings a clean 7ft from the SW with a 12-second period and an onshore breeze. It’s rideable, but not the standout.
Sunday 19th morning – now we’re talking. 5ft from the SW, clean cross-off wind, and the energy is good (882). The report says "very good surf conditions." This is a solid, fun morning for a wide range of surfers.
Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st are a tale of two extremes. Monday is small and weak. Tuesday, however, is a monster. The morning of the 21st sees a 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period and a massive energy reading of 5729, but the wind is a moderate 25 km/h cross-shore. The forecast says it’s too big for this break. That’s for experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. The same goes for the afternoon.
Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd are just blown out and too big. The 23rd morning has a glassy 15ft SW swell with 14 seconds and a ridiculous 7629 energy, but it’s still flagged as too big for the break. It’s a spectacle, not a session.
Friday 24th is a reset. The swell drops, and it’s marginal.
Now, here’s the real standout for the whole run: Saturday 25th. The morning at Yzerfontein is calling my name. We’ve got a 8ft SW swell with a 14-second period, good energy (2299), and the wind is glassy from the NE. The report says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That’s a beautiful, clean, lined-up swell. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, but on a morning like that, it’s worth the company.
Sunday 26th morning is also excellent, with a clean 6ft SW swell and cross-off wind. And then Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th keep the run going with clean, cross-off conditions and solid 5ft to 6ft SW swells. The period on the 28th stretches to 15 seconds, which is proper long-period groundswell – best on the reef sections.
The run continues into Wednesday 29th with another excellent morning, but the glassy afternoon is the real gem: 6ft WSW, 13 seconds, glassy as a mirror. That’s a magic session.
Thursday 30th closes things out with a 7ft SW swell, but the wind is up, so it’s not as clean.
Overall, the best bet is Saturday 25th for that glassy, clean, solid swell, with Monday 27th and Wednesday 29th as close runners-up. The first few days are a write-off, but from the 16th onward, there’s a lot to love.
Rusty.
