The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Over the next couple of weeks, Yzerfontein is going to see a lot of activity, but picking the right session is key. The water is much colder than normal for this time of year, coming in at 13° with a temperature anomaly of -3°, so that’s a solid 3° colder than average – definitely need a good thick steamer.
The first real standout is Thursday morning, the 20th of August. Yzerfontein is a beach and reef setup, and early that day we’ve got a 3.0m SW groundswell with a 13-second period. The combined swell energy is strong at 3174. The wind is a gentle S cross-off breeze, and the forecast says clean conditions. This is a big swell, over 2.5m, so this one is for experienced surfers only. The offshore wind direction is east, and the swell is coming from the SW, which is close to the optimum WSW, so it should wrap in nicely. It’s going to be big, powerful, and clean.
The next morning that’s worth a mention is Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. The swell drops to 1.3m from the SSW, with a period of 10 seconds and moderate energy (541). The wind is glassy – zero wind – so the surface will be like a mirror. The swell is smaller, more manageable, and the glassy conditions are a major positive. It’s a more relaxed session.
For the real experts, keep an eye on Saturday morning, the 29th of August. There’s a massive 4.0m SSW swell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 8960. The wind is a moderate SE cross-off breeze, keeping it clean. But that’s a huge swell, easily too big for anyone but the most experienced. The same goes for Thursday morning, the 3rd of September – a 3.0m W swell with 14-second period and very strong energy (3388) with glassy conditions. Both of these are well over 2.5m, so it’s experts only.
In between, there are a lot of days with cross-shore winds and marginal conditions, so the best bets are those clean, big-swell days for the crew who can handle it. The 29th of August and 3rd of September are the big standouts, but they’re a long way off, so keep checking in.
