Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
The surf window opens up this Friday at Hullets Reef. We’ve got swell running through the next few days, but conditions will be a mixed bag, so you’ve got to pick your moments. The water temp anomaly isn’t given, so let’s just say it’s a typical July for the area.
Friday morning, 3rd July, starts with some clouds and a light cross breeze from the NW at 6 mph. The swell is 7.2 ft out of the SE, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a solid groundswell, long enough to push through nicely. The combined energy is moderate (2029). It’s a bit marginal with that cross wind, but the afternoon brightens up. Friday afternoon, the wind goes glassy from the SSE at just 3 mph. The swell drops a touch to 7.9 ft but still from the SE, and the energy steps up (1581). This is the pick of the first day – clean, glassy conditions, but the wave comment says it’s for experienced surfers. That 7.9 ft is pushing up there, so it’s not a beginner’s session. Blokes on shortboards will be frothing.
Saturday morning, 4th July, is similar to Friday morning – 6.9 ft SE swell, 12-second period, cross wind again. The afternoon is a beauty though: clear skies, glassy wind from the SE at 3 mph, and 6.2 ft of SE swell. Combined energy (1068) is still moderate, and the wave comment says “very good surf conditions.” This is your Saturday standout – clean, glassy, decent size but not too heavy for a confident intermediate.
Sunday, the 5th, sees the swell drop to 4.6 ft. Morning has a cross-on breeze from the NNW at 9 mph, which messes it up a bit. By afternoon, a light offshore from the SSW at 6 mph gives you clean lines, but the swell is small – only 4.6 ft, 11-second period, energy (642). It’s rideable but nothing special.
Monday, 6th July, brings a change: the swell swings to the SW. Monday morning is glassy with a NNW wind at 3 mph, 6.9 ft SW swell, 12-second period, energy (1432). Beautiful conditions, but again, the wave comment says “excellent for experienced surfers.” That 6.9 ft with a long period will pitch up nicely on the reef. If you’re skilled, this is a top call.
Tuesday, 7th July, keeps that SW swell at 6.6 ft, 12 seconds. Morning has a cross-off breeze from the W at 9 mph – clean. The afternoon kills it: offshore wind from the SW at 3 mph, 6.6 ft SW swell, energy (1086), and “very good surf conditions.” Glassy offshore, consistent swells – Tuesday arvo is another standout.
Wednesday the 8th: the swell builds and the wind howls. Morning: 7.5 ft SW swell, 14-second period (very long period groundswell) – the energy jumps (2001). But there’s a cross-off breeze at 19 mph from the WSW. It’s clean, but that wind is strong. Afternoon is worse: 9.8 ft SW, 13 seconds, but the wind is 25 mph from the W. That’s big and clean but pushing the limits for most. Only for experts, and it’s a bit wild.
Thursday, 9th July, is a story of huge swell but poor winds. Both morning and afternoon have 11.5 ft SSW swell, 14-second period, energy (4353 and 3899). The wind is cross-on from the E at 6 mph – light, but cross-on ruins the face. The wave comment says “marginal.” Big swell, but messy.
From Friday 10th July right through to Sunday 12th July, the forecast is poor. E winds at 12-31 mph, cross-on, and swell dropping from 9.8 ft to 8.2 ft then back up to 9.8 ft. The wave comments are brutal: “poor surf conditions.” Blown out, choppy, lumpy. Don’t bother.
Monday 13th July: big stuff rolls in – 9.8 ft from the E, but the period drops to 10 seconds. Wind is cross-off from the W at 25 mph. Clean but raw. Tuesday 14th: the swell drops to 5.6 ft, then 4.6 ft. The 5.6 ft morning with a cross-off from the WNW at 9 mph is rideable, but nothing special.
Then Wednesday, 15th July, things get massive again. Morning: 11.5 ft SW,
