The Lowdown
Alright, it’s Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Hullets Reef over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a real mix coming our way, with some absolute gold in the second half of this period if you time it right.
Right now, the water temperature is sitting at a very chilly 59.9°F, which is nearly 5.4°F colder than what’s normal for this time of year. That’s a proper sting, so don’t forget the thick rubber.
The first real action kicks off on Sunday the 23rd. Sunday morning sees a solid 8.2ft south-west swell, with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined wave energy is pumping at 1470. Winds are a cross-offshore westerly at 9 mph, so the faces will be pretty clean. This is proper size though—over 8ft means this is for experienced surfers only. Sunday afternoon cleans up even more, with the wind swinging true offshore from the south-southwest at just 6 mph, with the swell dropping a touch to 7.2ft and energy climbing to 1583. That afternoon session is the standout on Sunday: clean, solid, and glassy edges.
Monday the 24th still has plenty of push. Morning brings 6.6ft from the south-west at 12 seconds (energy 1082), with a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s very good, but not quite the standout. Monday afternoon the swell drops to 3.9ft, but the period stretches to 14 seconds and the wind goes offshore again from the south-west. That long-period groundswell is beautiful on a reef, with clean lines and easy paddling between sets.
Now Tuesday the 25th is the absolute standout for the first half of the forecast. The morning delivers 8.2ft south-west swell, a 13-second period, and huge energy of 3315. Offshore wind from the south-west at 9 mph keeps it all clean. This is excellent, solid groundswell for experienced surfers. Tuesday afternoon still holds strong at 5.9ft and a very long 15-second period, with 12 mph offshore winds. That’s a proper day.
Wednesday the 26th is a write-off. The swell jumps to 9.8ft but the wind cranks onshore from the east at 18 to 25 mph, making it lumpy and messy. Combined energy hits 4117 and 4327, but it’s all blown out. Not one for the paddle board.
Thursday the 27th is a mixed bag. Morning is a bit meh, with 6.9ft from the south-southwest and light north-northeast offshore wind, but the conditions are marginal. The afternoon though? That’s a hidden gem. The swell comes down to 5.2ft from the south at 12 seconds, combined energy of 1747, and the wind goes absolutely glassy—3 mph from the southeast. That’s clean, lined-up reef waves for the experienced crew.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are poor to ordinary, with onshore winds and dropping swell. Energy fades from 990 down to 408. Not worth paddling out for.
Sunday the 30th sees a tiny 3.3ft eastern swell with offshore wind in the morning—only 266 energy, surfable but ordinary. Light rain doesn’t help.
Monday the 31st is a knee-waist high joke at 1.6ft in the morning, but the afternoon throws a curveball: 9.8ft south-west swell appears out of nowhere with 2145 energy. Cross-shore wind though, so conditions are marginal.
Now, if you can wait, the second week kicks off with a banger. Tuesday the 1st of September is another standout. Morning has 8.2ft south-west swell, 12-second period, energy at 2041, and a solid 12 mph offshore wind from the west-south-west. That is excellent, clean and powerful for experienced surfers. Tuesday afternoon has the same size but a light cross-shore breeze—still worth it.
Wednesday the 2nd still has 7.5ft and 6.6ft south-west swell, with offshore winds in the afternoon, but the wind gets strong at 25 mph, making it hard to paddle into despite the clean faces.
Then things get huge. Thursday the 3rd of September sees the swell ramp up to 18ft from the south-west, with 14 seconds and energy of 13490 by afternoon. Winds are strong offshore. This is massive—ex
