Alright folks, Rusty here. We've got a mixed bag coming our way from the breaks around the region. The first few days look a bit flat, so we're waiting for a pulse to arrive. There's a solid run of swell building in, but it's going to take its time to get here and then it gets a bit messy towards the end. Let's get into it.
Our first decent option rolls in on Sunday, the 5th of July, at Hullets Reef. The afternoon is the call here. The wind switches offshore from the WSW at 6 mph, so the lineup should clean right up from the morning's cross-onshore chop. We're looking at a 4 ft swell from the ESE with a 12-second period. The energy is moderate at 620, so nothing massive, but the clean conditions make it a fun, user-friendly wave. The water's sitting at 65°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want a slightly thicker suit.
Now, Monday the 6th of July is where we start to get excited. The morning is a standout. We've got glassy conditions with a light NW breeze at 3 mph. On top of that, a 6 ft groundswell from the SW, with a 12-second period. The energy jumps up to a solid moderate at 1104. This is a fantastic window for some clean, punchy waves on the reef. The conditions are going to be pristine, so get a dawn patrol in to avoid the afternoon cross-onshore chop.
Tuesday the 7th of July is another top contender. After a choppy start, the afternoon turns it on. The wind goes offshore from the SW at 9 mph, giving us clean lines on a 7 ft SW groundswell (energy 1256). This is bigger and more powerful than Monday morning, and the offshore breeze will hold it open. This is likely the best session of the week. After this, we get a run of big, powerful swell.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th of July are for experienced surfers only. Wednesday afternoon sees a 10 ft SW swell with strong offshore winds at 22 mph, while Thursday morning has a clean 8 ft SW swell with lighter offshore wind. The energy is very strong (2802 and 3075 respectively). This is heavy, powerful reef surf for those who know what they're doing.
The swell peaks on Friday the 10th of July with a massive 12 ft SSW groundswell at a very long 13-second period, but with a cross-on easterly wind, it's going to be a lumpy, challenging beast. After that, a big storm system pushes through with strong winds and rain from Saturday the 11th well into the following week, making conditions really poor. We have a gap of poor or marginal conditions until Wednesday the 15th of July.
Glimmers of hope return Wednesday the 15th of July morning. A 4 ft ESE swell with glassy conditions from a NNE breeze. It's small, but the glassy conditions will make it a fun little session.
The next major standout is much further out, on Thursday the 16th of July afternoon. A 10 ft SSW groundswell (very strong energy of 4187) with a 13-second period and light onshore wind. It's a bit raw, but there's a lot of power.
The final true highlight of this forecast is Friday the 17th of July. The morning session with a 8 ft SSW groundswell (energy 2315) and a cross-offshore W wind at 9 mph. It's a classic, powerful reef wave with clean faces again for the experienced crew.
We then fade out into smaller, cleaner but weaker swells through the weekend and into the following Monday. The 20th of July afternoon has a small but clean 5 ft S groundswell with glassy conditions.
So, to sum it up, the standout windows are Monday the 6th morning for the best combination of size and perfection, and Tuesday the 7th afternoon for the biggest clean swell of the early run. After that, it's a big-wave game for the bold.
Rusty.
