The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way. The next couple of weeks have a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some proper grunt in the water if you time it right. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, but once we get past Sunday, things start to shape up.
The first real call is on Monday afternoon, July 20th, at Hullets Reef. We’re looking at a clean 6ft swell from the SW, with a gentle offshore wind. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent suit. The swell energy is solid (1276), and while it’s not the biggest, that offshore breeze will keep the faces tidy. It’s a good one to get the week started.
Now, the standout of the whole forecast is Tuesday morning, July 21st. Glassy conditions, a 6ft SW groundswell, and a period of 15 seconds – that’s proper long-period energy. The combined energy is pumping (1696), and with the wind dead calm, it’s going to be clean as a whistle. This is a reef break that’s fairly consistent and works best with a SE swell direction, and this SW swell is close enough to the optimum to get the banks firing. It’s a proper session for experienced surfers, as that long period can make things a bit more critical.
Wednesday morning, July 22nd, also looks tidy. A 7ft SW swell, light cross-offshore wind, and another nice, clean surface. The energy is still high (1640), and it’s another excellent window for those who know what they’re doing.
After that, things get a bit wild. Thursday afternoon, July 23rd, sees the swell bump up to 12ft from the SW, but with a fresh cross-offshore wind. That’s big, powerful stuff – only for the very experienced. Friday, July 24th, is even bigger, with a 12ft SSW swell and a super-long 16-second period, but the wind swings onshore, making it a messy, lumpy mess. The water’s going to be a washing machine, with combined energy over 6400, so it’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
Saturday morning, July 25th, brings a reprieve. Glassy conditions again, with a 8ft SW swell. The energy is still strong (2090), and the clean glass will make for some serious lines. It’s another one for the core crew.
The second week is a bit of a mixed bag. There’s a lot of size, but the wind is often onshore or cross-offshore. Sunday, July 27th, has a 10ft SW swell but with a strong breeze, so it’s going to be a battle. The real standout in the second week is Wednesday, July 29th. The afternoon is completely glassy, with a 8ft SSW swell and a 13-second period. The energy is still high (2248), and with the wind dead, it’ll be a clean, powerful day. That’s your best bet for the tail end of the forecast.
The very end of the run, from August 1st onwards, drops off in size and quality, with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Sunday, August 2nd, has a big 8ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, but the wind is directly onshore, so it’s going to be a messy, closed-out affair.
So, to sum it up: Tuesday morning, July 21st, is the absolute gem of the whole forecast – glassy, strong, and clean. Wednesday morning, July 22nd, and Saturday morning, July 25th, are also very good. The second week’s best is Wednesday afternoon, July 29th, but it’s not as certain. Everything else is either too big, too windy, or just plain messy.
Rusty.
