The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the local surf for the next stretch.

Alright, buckle up, because we’ve got some serious energy headed our way, but it’s not all clean sailing. The standout call here is Hullets Reef – no other breaks on the menu, so this is your only game in town. The water temp is a wild one, sitting at 58°F, which is a massive 8°F colder than usual for this time of year, so you’re gonna want a thick suit and maybe some booties.

The best window of the whole forecast kicks off on Sunday, August 23rd. Morning starts with a 8ft SW swell, an 11-second period, and light offshore wind from the WSW. That’s clean, powerful reef surf with moderate wave energy (1590). The afternoon holds the same 8ft size but with a longer 12-second period and light cross-off wind from the SSE – still glassy and clean (1685). This is top-tier stuff for experienced surfers, but at 8ft, it’s expert-only territory.

Now, Thursday, August 20th has some solid size, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is a 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period – that’s very long-period groundswell pushing in with massive energy (5803). The wind is cross-off at 20 km/h, so it’s clean, but the forecast flags it as marginal due to tide issues and the sheer size. This is for experienced big-wave chargers only. The afternoon drops to 12ft, but the wind shifts to 15 km/h offshore from the SW, making for excellent conditions (4678). Still, that’s well over 8ft – big, powerful, and for experts only.

Monday, August 24th is a solid follow-up. Morning has a 7ft SW swell with a 12-second period and light offshore wind (1171). Afternoon holds at 6ft with a 12-second period and a moderate offshore breeze (1173). Both are very good, clean conditions for a strong intermediate.

There’s a stretch of poor wind around August 25-26. On Tuesday morning, we’ve got 8ft SW swell with a long 14-second period, but the wind is cross-on from the ENE at 20 km/h, making it choppy. Tuesday afternoon goes downhill fast – 10ft SW swell with a 16-second period but a fresh 35 km/h cross-on wind. Messy and lumpy – not worth paddling out.

Friday, August 27th afternoon looks interesting – a smaller 3ft S swell with an 11-second period and 15 km/h offshore wind from the WSW (342). That’s clean and fun for a log or a fish.

Then on September 2nd, we get another banger. Wednesday morning has a 8ft SW swell with a 15-second period and light cross-off wind (2649). Wednesday afternoon is even better: 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period and near-calm conditions (only 5 km/h wind) creating clean, glassy faces (3581). That’s a proper standout for experts.

September 3rd brings another pulse: Thursday morning hits 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period and massive energy (5390), but the wind is cross-on from the east. It stays big but gets a little lumpy in the afternoon. Still, if you can handle the size and the chop, there’s power in the water.

The forecast wraps on September 4th with a 8ft SW swell and 20 km/h offshore wind in the morning (2021), then 10ft SW swell and a fresh 30 km/h offshore in the afternoon (2565). Clean and heavy for those who want a late-season push.

Crowds? Hullets Reef is listed as “sometimes” crowded, so you might have company on the best days, but the quality makes it worth jostling a bit.

So, bottom line: Sunday, August 23rd is your all-round best call if you’re experienced. September 2nd is the long-range standout, but keep an eye on the wind closer to the day. This is a reef break, so that long-period SW groundswell will set up nicely.

Rusty, signing out.
