Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Hullets Reef.
This is a reef break that’s fairly consistent and likes a south-easterly swell. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ve got a strong run of swell coming, but the winds are going to keep things interesting. The water is running about 64°, which is a bit colder than the norm for this time of year – nothing wild, but you’ll want a wetsuit.
The first real standout hits Monday morning, July 6th. We’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the SW with a solid 12-second interval, and the wind is glassy – barely a breath. The combined energy is pumping at 1119, so there’s serious power behind it. This is going to be clean, lined-up reef waves. Crowds are possible, so get there early.
Tuesday afternoon, July 7th is another beauty. The swell holds at 7ft from the SW, still with that nice 12-second gap, and the wind swings offshore. That’s clean and hollow. Energy is still high at 1293.
Wednesday morning, July 8th, bumps up to 8ft from the SW, 13-second period, cross-off wind. The breeze is 30 km/h, so there’s a bit of texture, but still solid.
The big one hits Thursday morning, July 9th – a serious 10ft from the SW with a long 14-second period. Combined energy is massive at 4003. That’s big, powerful reef surf – expert only. The wind is cross-off and clean, though strong at 30 km/h.
After that, Friday and Saturday morning get messy with cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions.
But Saturday afternoon, July 11th, is a sleeper. Swell drops to 7ft from the SSW, 12-second period, and the wind goes glassy again. Excellent for experienced surfers. Clean and glassy.
Sunday, July 12th, still has fun 8ft swell from the SE, but the period drops to 8 seconds – shorter, weaker energy (1218). It’ll be glassy in the morning though.
The second week is more hit-and-miss. Saturday, July 18th, afternoon brings 8ft from the SW, 9-second period, clean with cross-off breeze. Energy is strong at 2338, but that short period means it’s a bit more of a push.
From around Thursday, July 16th, through the end, the surf goes quiet and poor – onshore winds or strong offshore winds that are hard to paddle into.
So, your two best calls are Monday morning, July 6th and Saturday afternoon, July 11th – both glassy with solid, powerful SW swell. Thursday, July 9th, is for the pros. Everything else, pick your moments.
This is Rusty, signing off.
