The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I'm looking straight at the forecast for Hullets Reef. It's a beginner-friendly reef break that's fairly consistent, soaking up a solid SW groundswell, and it picks up swell best from the SE, so that’s a bit of a mismatch already, but there's still plenty to get excited about.
The overall pattern for the next 16 days is a big, drawn-out run of SW groundswell, but it's got some wild wind swings that are going to make or break the sessions. The combined swell energy kicks off strong at 2205 on the Monday, and that's a sign of a lot of juice in the water.
Monday 17th August morning is the real standout of the whole outlook. We’ve got a clean 8ft SW groundswell with a long 14-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the WSW at 6 mph. That's a recipe for glassy, lined-up waves. The combined energy is pumping at 2205, and this is "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers". For a beginner reef, 8ft is getting solid, so it's not for grommets, but for anyone who knows what they're doing, this is the best session on offer.
The afternoon of Monday 17th drops right off to a weak 3ft E swell, so don't bother paddling out then.
Tuesday 18th August afternoon is another one to circle. The wind shifts to a light offshore from the SW at 6 mph, and we've got a punchy 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds. The energy hits 2270, and it’s labelled as "excellent for experienced surfers". That's a big, clean, powerful wave.
Thursday 20th August afternoon is a monster. A massive 13ft SW swell at 13 seconds, combined energy hitting 5025, and the wind is a gentle offshore from the SSW at 9 mph. This is huge, powerful, and clean. It’s scored as "excellent for experienced surfers", and frankly, it's a big-wave day. Only experts should be out here. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, but with that much juice, you won't be thinking about the water temp.
Sunday 23rd August is another peak. The morning brings a 15ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, combined energy at an insane 7543, but the wind is a moderate cross-offshore. The afternoon though is the true highlight: a 13ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, combined energy 6647, and light offshore SW wind at 6 mph. Glassy, powerful, and heavy. This is another big-wave show for experts only.
After that, things get messy. The wind turns onshore from the East from Monday 24th onwards, and by Tuesday 25th the swell drops away and the conditions are called “poor”. There’s a big gap of several days there where the wind is just ruining it.
Then, looking at the second week, Thursday 27th August morning is a sneaky good one. We get a 7ft SW swell at 13 seconds, but the real story is the wind: glassy, from the SSW at 3 mph. That's absolutely pristine. The combined energy is 1487, and it's marked as "excellent for experienced surfers". That 7ft at a reef is a beautiful, manageable size.
Friday 28th August morning also looks clean with a moderate offshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph, a 7ft SW swell, and it's "excellent for experienced surfers". A solid, clean session.
The very end of the run, Sunday 30th August morning and Monday 31st August, have some size but are battling strong to gale-force offshore winds. That makes for incredibly hard paddling and a challenging, though very clean, wave.
So, if I'm picking one or two standouts: Monday 17th August morning for the first big, clean, powerful session of the run, and Sunday 23rd August afternoon for the absolute peak of the swell with glassy conditions. This is a reef break that handles the long-period groundswell well, so don't worry about it closing out. Just be aware that 10ft and over is for experienced surfers only. This is a spot that can get crowded, and with runs like these, expect some company.
