Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hullets Reef over the next 16 days.
G'day, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Hullets Reef over the next couple of weeks. It’s a reef break that’s fairly consistent and works best on a SE swell direction. Water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about normal for this time of year.
The outlook kicks off on Monday, 13 July, but honestly, you can forget the first couple of days. Monday morning brings a lumpy 6ft easterly swell with a short 7-second period and a stiff onshore wind – it’s a write-off. Monday afternoon isn’t much better, choppy and cross-onshore. Nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday, 14 July, things start to turn. The wind swings offshore from the WSW in the afternoon, cleaning up a 5ft ESE swell (9 seconds). It’s small but clean, a decent window for a paddle. The morning session is cross-off, still rideable with 5ft swell.
Wednesday, 15 July, is a mixed bag. The morning drop to 4ft with a 10-second period is marginal – small and clean, but barely enough juice. The afternoon, however, gets interesting: a 6ft SW groundswell rolls in at 12 seconds, and the combined swell energy jumps to 1283 (moderate). The wind is cross-off, waves will be clean and well-shaped. This is a solid option for the experienced crew.
But the real standout is Thursday, 16 July – afternoon. This is where it gets serious. An 8ft SW groundswell with a 13-second period, combined energy of 2359 (strong), and a gentle offshore WSW wind. The report says *excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers* – this is the best on offer in the first week. The size is too big for beginners, but for the guys who know what they’re doing, it’s a ripper. The reef setup will handle that long-period energy well.
Friday, 17 July, stays big with 10ft SW swells, but a strong 22 mph cross-off wind on the morning makes it a messy, high-energy affair (2682 combined energy). The afternoon is cleaner but still big. It’s a goer for experts only, but not as clean as Thursday.
Saturday, 18 July, is a write-off: strong onshore winds, choppy, poor conditions. Sunday, 19 July, sees the swell drop to 4ft, but the wind is cross-off and clean – small, surfable but nothing special.
Now, looking into the second week, Monday, 20 July, is a real gem. 5ft to 6ft SW groundswell (11 seconds), light cross-off winds, combined energy in the 700-800 range (moderate), and the report says *expect very good surf conditions*. Clean, cruisy, and consistent – this is a top pick for a fun session without the crowds likely being too heavy.
Tuesday, 21 July, is a big one. A 10ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period, combined energy of 5437 (very strong!) on the morning. The wind is a light cross-onshore, which might put a tiny ripple on it, but the sheer power is there. The afternoon cleans up with a cross-off. This is a beast of a swell – only for experts, and the long period means it’ll be breaking straight at a beach break, but on a reef like this, it’ll be lined up. A standout, but a week out, so keep an eye on it.
Wednesday, 22 July – morning, is another cracker. 8ft SW groundswell (15 seconds), light cross-off wind, combined energy of 3101 (strong), and marked as *excellent conditions for experienced surfers*. Clean, powerful, and consistent. Another top pick.
After that, things get messy. Thursday, 23 July, sees a near gale-force wind of 34 mph making a mess of a 12ft swell – absolute no-go. Friday, 24 July, is a bit of a reset, with a glassy afternoon on a 4ft S swell (10 seconds) – small, clean, good for a longboard.
Saturday, 25 July – afternoon, brings a 4ft SW groundswell (15 seconds), light offshore wind, combined energy of 1089 (moderate), and *expect very good surf conditions*. Clean, long-period waves – a nice end to the week.
The final standout is Monday, 28 July – afternoon. A 6ft SW groundswell (15 seconds), light cross-off wind, combined energy of 1690 (moderate), and *excellent conditions for experienced surfers*. Clean, solid, and well-shaped. A promising way to finish the 16-day run.
So, to wrap it up: the true standouts are Thursday 16 July afternoon and Monday 20 July – both offer clean, powerful surf with good energy. The long-range stuff on 21 and 22 July looks massive but is less certain. For the rest, there’s a few fun windows, but plenty of dud days too. Get out there when the wind plays nice.
Rusty.
