The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. The next 16 days are all about one spot – Hullets Reef. This is a reef break, good for beginners when it’s small, but it’s got some serious muscle coming through.
We kick off on Thursday the 20th, and it’s a proper heavy start. A solid 13ft SW groundswell is slamming in, with a very long 14-second period. The combined energy is massive (5803), and it’s a real cleanup set. The wind is a clean offshore out of the southwest, but let’s be real – at this size, it’s only for the experienced. That water temp is a frigid 60°, sitting 6° colder than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual. You’ll feel that bite through your wettie.
Thursday afternoon, the swell drops slightly to 12ft, still SW, still a long 13-second period. The wind goes glassy offshore, making it clean. But again, over 8ft, this is expert territory. It’s a powerful session for those who know what they’re doing.
Friday the 21st sees the swell easing to 8ft, but the wind swings onshore from the ENE, bringing a chop. It’s not great. That trend continues into Saturday, with a big drop in size and messy cross-off winds. Not worth paddling out, honestly.
Come Sunday the 23rd, we’re back in business. It’s a clean 8ft SW swell with offshore winds in the morning. This is a standout. The energy is serious (1769), and the wave quality is world-class for experienced surfers. The wind stays light and cross-off in the afternoon, keeping it clean. This is the one to circle.
Monday the 24th holds at 7ft, with clean offshore winds in the afternoon. It’s a solid session, but not the peak of the week.
Now, Tuesday the 25th brings a 10ft SW groundswell, but the wind is onshore from the northeast, so it’s messy. The energy is high (3112), but the conditions ruin it. The rest of the week drifts off with smaller, onshore slop until Thursday the 27th, where a tiny 3ft S swell with clean offshore wind gives us a small, clean window.
Friday the 28th is a hidden gem. The swell is only 5ft, but it’s a long-period SW groundswell (14 seconds), and the wind goes glassy. That’s butter. Energy is good (1290), and it’ll be a fun, clean session for intermediates.
The first week of September sees a couple of big swells. On the 1st, we get a 10ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period and offshore wind. That’s a massive, clean, powerful swell – energy is 3584. Only for experts. Then on the 2nd, another 8ft to 10ft SW groundswell rolls through with clean offshore winds in the afternoon. This is a proper run of solid surf.
The real standout is the very first day, Thursday the 20th, for the sheer size and power, but for the best quality, you’ve got to look at Sunday the 23rd and the glassy afternoon on the 28th. The Sunday the 23rd has the best combo of size, clean wind, and quality. The 28th is the sleeper pick for a clean, fun wave.
For the rest of the window, it’s either too big, too windy, or too small. The 3rd and 4th of September are a write-off with strong winds and choppy conditions.
Stay sharp, pick your windows, and don’t sleep on that Sunday.
Rusty.
