The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Hullets Reef. This is a pretty exposed little reef set-up, and it’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent. The water temp’s about average for the time of year, so nothing too wild on that front. For the first few days, it’s a bit of a slow burner, but there’s a real standout session toward the end of the week that’s got my mouth watering.
So, Tuesday the 14th kicks off with a clean 5 ft swell from the ESE, but it’s a bit messy with a cross-off breeze. The energy’s weak (481), so not much to write home about. Wednesday morning the 15th is small and clean again, but nothing special. Then Wednesday afternoon, we get a jump to 6 ft from the SW with a fresh offshore wind – that’s looking cleaner, but the energy is still moderate (1215). Not a standout yet.
Thursday the 16th, the swell jumps to 10 ft from the SW, but it’s a bit onshore in the morning and the period’s a solid 14 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and it’s a lot of water. The energy is strong (3276), but it’s also a bit too big for the average punter. It’s really only for the experienced crew. Friday the 17th is where it starts to get interesting. Friday afternoon, we’ve got 10 ft of SW swell, 12-second period, and a light offshore breeze. That’s proper clean, and the energy is very strong (2260). That’s a session for the experienced surfer, and it’s the best on offer in the first week.
Saturday the 18th, the swell drops a touch to 6 ft from the S, but the real story is the afternoon – glassy conditions. That’s a rare treat, and the energy is still moderate (1068). That’s a solid all-rounder session, but it’s not the big one.
Sunday the 19th is a write-off. Strong winds, 25-28 mph, and the swell is small and messy. No good. Monday the 20th sees a massive 12 ft SSW swell, but it’s onshore and choppy. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle-surfing day. The energy is very strong (3545), but the quality is poor.
Now, here’s the real standout. Tuesday the 21st of July. Morning session: 10 ft of SSW swell, a 16-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell, and it’s gonna wrap around the reef beautifully. The energy is massive (5019), and it’s clean with a gentle offshore breeze. That’s an excellent day for experienced surfers. The afternoon is also clean, but the period drops a touch. This is the best of the whole forecast.
Wednesday the 22nd is still pumping with 10 ft SW swell and a 14-second period, and the afternoon goes glassy again. That’s another ripper for the experienced crew. Thursday the 23rd gets hammered by near-gale winds, so that’s a no-go. Friday the 24th is small and onshore, not worth it.
Saturday the 25th has a surprise – a glassy 7 ft from the E, but it’s a short-period 8-second wind swell. Good for a cruise, but not the big stuff. Sunday the 26th brings back the big boys with 8 ft SW, 15-second period, and clean offshore winds. That’s excellent for experienced surfers again. Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are onshore and messy, but Tuesday afternoon the 28th has a solid 12 ft SSW swell with a clean cross-off breeze, and that’s a strong finish to the window.
So, the standout is without a doubt Tuesday the 21st of July – that 10 ft, 16-second SSW groundswell with clean offshore winds is the pick of the crop. The Friday the 17th afternoon is also a top contender. If you’re an experienced surfer, get ready for a big week.
