The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks at one spot, and one spot only – Hullets Reef.

The kick-off is a bit of a fizzer. This Saturday (August 22nd), we’ve got swell on the cards at 4ft to 5ft from the SSW/SW, and the water is sitting at a very unusual 60°, a whopping 6° colder than usual for this time. But the real story is the wind – howling from the W and WSW at 31 to 25 mph, blowing straight across. The ocean’s gonna be a mess of lumps and whitecaps. Combined energy is moderate (521 to 735), but the poor surf conditions make it a total no-go. Let’s leave the boards in the car.

Sunday the 23rd is where we wake up. The wind swings offshore and drops right off (just 9 to 6 mph). Swell bumps up a touch to 7ft to 8ft from the SW, with a clean 11-second period. The combined energy jumps right up into strong territory (1410 to 1589). This is what it’s all about: excellent surf conditions, though the size is getting solid – definitely one for experienced surfers. This really is the standout session in the first week.

Monday (24th) stays clean and offshore, with the swell easing slightly to 6ft. The energy stays up over 1000. It’s still a damn good wave, just not quite as punchy as Sunday.

Then Tuesday the 25th rolls in, and *holy mackerel*. The morning brings a clean, 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and the energy indicator climbs to a massive 3427. That is some serious power. The afternoon holds at a still thumping 8ft with a 13-second period. This is huge, groundswell energy. It’ll be long, lully sets, packing a punch. This is for experts only, no doubt about it.

Wednesday the 26th sees a big shift. Swell is still big and long-period, coming from the SSW, but the wind swings onshore from the East. The energy is insane (3547 to 4144), but the poor surf conditions from that onshore wind will make it a total washout.

The rest of that week into early the next week gets a bit average. Thursday and Friday (27th and 28th) are a mix of poor conditions and onshore winds, with a bit of swell around the 5ft to 7ft mark, but it’s lumpy and wind-affected. Not worth paddling out for. The energy drops as well. Saturday the 29th looks even worse with small swell and strong cross-shore wind.

Sunday the 30th brings our next true standout. We’ve got a fresh, 12ft SW swell, with an offshore wind from the WSW at just 9 mph. The energy is massive at 3936, and the conditions are clean. Another absolute pumping day for the experienced crew. The afternoon has the same size but the wind picks up a touch, which might make it a bit more ragged.

Monday (31st) the size drops back to a solid 8ft, still offshore, but the conditions are more marginal. Tuesday morning (September 1st) is interesting – it’s a glassy start with 7ft of SW swell, but the afternoon goes to cross-on wind.

Now for the very end of the run. Thursday, September 3rd looks like the biggest and best on paper. The wind is completely glassy in the morning, and the swell is a massive 12ft from the SW with a 16-second period. The energy indicator is the highest of the entire 16-day window: 5760. That is some serious, deep-water energy. The conditions are listed as excellent for experienced surfers. This one is a huge, long-period groundswell, so expect long lulls and almond-shaped bombs. Super promising, but still a way off.

The following days (4th to 6th September) keep that solid 8ft to 10ft SSW/SW groundswell going with generally favorable wind conditions, especially the Saturday and Sunday mornings. The sustained energy through that whole second week is hard to ignore. There’s a whole lot of ocean moving here.

The bottom line: we’ve got no surf to start, but once it goes off on Sunday the 23rd, it stays pumping through the entire run for experienced surfers. The absolute standouts are Sunday the 23rd for that first clean, big swell, and Thursday the 3rd of September for the biggest, glassiest conditions of the forecast.

Rusty.
