The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, checking in on the local forecast for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow start, but we’ve got some serious firepower on the way if you’re patient.
The first real window of opportunity kicks off on Friday, 17 July, but don’t get too excited just yet. Friday morning at Hullets Reef is packing a solid 10 ft SW swell with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a hefty 2151—that’s a lot of water moving. Problem is, the wind is a cross-offshore at 12 mph, which isn’t terrible, but the conditions are described as marginal. It’s a big, powerful wave for a beginner-friendly reef break, so it’s one for the more experienced crew to look at.
Friday afternoon cleans up nicely. The wind swings to a light offshore from the SW at just 6 mph, and the swell drops slightly to 8 ft, still from the SW with an 11-second period. The energy is still strong at 1541. This is where the surf really starts to get good for those who know what they’re doing. It’s a clean, powerful wave, but with that size, it’s definitely not a beginner session.
The weekend is a write-off. Saturday and Sunday see strong, messy cross-offshore winds and the conditions are rated as marginal. The swell is still there, but the wind is ruining it.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday, 20 July is a standout. The morning is absolutely glassy with zero wind. The swell is a manageable 6 ft from the SW, with a 9-second period, and the energy is a solid 1255. This is a gem. The wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions,” and with glassy conditions, it’s going to be a dream. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so a standard wetsuit will do. Come Monday afternoon, it’s a light cross-off at 6 mph, keeping the sets clean. This is the best call for the first week.
The next big standout is a week later, on Wednesday, 22 July. The afternoon session sees a 10 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a massive combined energy of 5063. The wind is a clean offshore from the WSW at 12 mph. The conditions are rated as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big, powerful, clean swell. If you’re an expert, you’re going to want to be out there.
Then, on Friday, 24 July, the morning is a monster. An 12 ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period, and the energy is a whopping 5090. The wind is a light cross-off at 6 mph. This is a groundswell of the highest order. The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is a board-shortener if you’re not ready for it. The long period means it’ll be lined up and powerful, but at a reef break like Hullets, it should handle beautifully. There is a chance of a crowd here, as it’s a “sometimes” crowded spot, so get there early.
The absolute peak of the forecast looks to be Sunday, 26 July. The afternoon is a beast. A 16 ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and a combined energy of 8467. The wind is a light cross-off at just 6 mph. The conditions are described as “exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers.” This is huge, clean, and powerful. This is not a day for the faint-hearted. It’s the best on offer in the entire 16-day window, but only for experts.
After that, the surf drops off. Monday, 27 July, is a write-off with strong onshore winds and poor conditions. The following week looks much smaller, with a few days of lighter 4 ft to 5 ft groundswells, but the winds are often onshore or cross-onshore, making it a gamble. The final days of July and into August see the swell fade to under 3 ft, with poor wind. There’s a small window on the morning of 1 August with a 2 ft glassy swell, but it’s very small.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are Monday morning, 20 July, for a clean, fun size, and then the expert-only big swells from Wednesday, 22 July, through to Sunday, 26 July. The 26th is the absolute standout, but it’s for the big dogs only.
Rusty.
