Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hullets Reef over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for this stretch.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the real juice is waiting for you later. The first few days are surfable but nothing to write home about, then things start to build. The standout window is definitely going to be Tuesday the 25th of August – that’s the one you want to circle. After that, the weather turns ugly and the swell gets messy, so make the most of that mid-week window.
Hullets Reef – this is your only real option in the guide. It’s a reef break, beginner-friendly, fairly consistent, and it likes a south-easterly swell. The water temperature is sitting at a chilly 60°, which is a massive 6° colder than normal for this time of year – so bring a thick wetsuit, it’s unusually cold.
We start on Sunday the 23rd of August with a 8 ft swell from the SW, period 11 seconds, and a cross-off wind in the morning. The water’s got some serious energy behind it – 1470 (moderate energy) – but the conditions are only marginal. The afternoon cleans up nicely: 7 ft SW swell, 11 seconds, and a light offshore wind. That’s a solid session for experienced surfers, clean waves, not too big, but the water’s still icy.
Monday the 24th sees the swell drop a touch to 7 ft, same SW direction, period pushing 12 seconds. Morning is cross-off, afternoon turns offshore with a gentle breeze. The combined energy drops to 1082 and 1328 respectively – still moderate, but the waves are clean and have some shape. A good day for a paddle.
Now, Tuesday the 25th of August – this is the pick of the bunch. Morning session hits with a solid 10 ft SW swell, 14-second period, and offshore wind. The combined energy is 4314 – strong, powerful, long-period groundswell. This is big, clean, and lined up. But listen – at 10 ft, this is expert territory. Too big for beginners, and the long period (14 seconds) means it’ll be breaking deep and fast. Best on a reef like this, but be ready. The afternoon drops to 8 ft, still clean, still good, but the wind goes cross-off.
Wednesday the 26th is a write-off. The wind swings east, blowing 22-25 mph cross-onshore, and the swell jumps to 12 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. The energy is through the roof (5695 and 5654) but it’s lumpy, messy, and blown out. Thursday and Friday aren’t much better – onshore winds, lumpy conditions, and the swell drops fast. By Saturday the 29th, it’s tiny and messy with strong cross-onshore winds. Not worth it.
The following week (starting Monday the 31st of August) looks pretty flat and ordinary. Small swell, short periods, mostly poor conditions. There’s a brief window on Tuesday the 1st of September with a 6 ft SW swell, 13 seconds, and light offshore wind in the morning – energy at 1092 – but it gets blown out by the afternoon. After that, it’s a mix of tiny swell and strong winds, nothing to get excited about.
So, bottom line: if you’re an experienced surfer, get on Tuesday the 25th of August for the morning session at Hullets Reef. That’s your best shot at some proper, powerful, clean waves. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too messy.
Rusty.
