The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Straight off the bat, we’ve got some solid swell heading our way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The first couple of days are a bit of a mixed bag, with some decent size but tricky winds. The real standout windows are further out, and I’ll get to those.
We kick off on Thursday the 16th with a 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds, combined energy of 2367 (moderate to strong). The wind is cross-off from the WSW, so it’s clean, but the comment says marginal surf or questionable tide, so it’s a bit of a gamble. Friday the 17th morning looks similar, but by Friday afternoon, we get a proper offshore wind from the WSW at 12 mph, with a 8ft SW swell. That’s clean, and the energy is 1458 (moderate). It’s a good session for experienced surfers.
Saturday the 18th drops off a bit in size, but the winds are light and offshore at times, keeping things tidy. Sunday the 19th morning has a glassy 3ft swell with a 12-second period, but it’s small. The afternoon gets a fresh 22 mph offshore wind, which is a bit much, but it’s clean.
Now, here’s where it starts to get interesting. Monday the 20th has a 8ft SW swell with a 11-second period, light offshore winds, and 1960 combined energy (moderate). That’s a solid, clean day for the experienced crew. Tuesday the 21st is a write-off with onshore winds and choppy conditions.
The big call is Wednesday the 22nd. We’ve got a 16ft SW swell early, then a 15ft SW swell in the afternoon with a 13-second period, offshore wind, and combined energy of 6341 (very strong). This is big, serious surf. Water temp is 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. This is for experts only. That trend continues right through to Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th, with 13ft to 15ft SW swells, long periods, and light winds. The energy is through the roof, hitting over 7000 (very strong) on the 24th morning with a 16-second period.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are still big, but the wind turns onshore, making it messy. The swell is still there, but the quality drops.
For the best of the best, I’d be looking at Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and Friday the 24th morning. The 22nd afternoon has a 15ft SW swell at 13 seconds, offshore wind, and 6341 energy. The 24th morning has a 13ft SW swell at 16 seconds, light cross-off wind, and 7174 energy. Both are clean, powerful, and for the experienced only. The 16-second period on the 24th is a proper groundswell, so it’ll be lined up and powerful at Hullets Reef. This is a reef break, so that long period will work well. It’s fairly consistent, but crowds are possible – it’s a known spot.
We also get a standout window on the 29th of July. Wednesday the 29th morning is glassy, with a 10ft SSW swell at a very long 19-second period, and combined energy of 7570 (very strong). That’s exceptional for experts, and glassy conditions are a massive bonus.
The first week is a mix, but the second week has some absolute bombs. The long-range stuff on the 24th and 29th is promising, but less certain.
Rusty.
