Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, the long-range outlook here is a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some absolute crackers hidden in there if you’re willing to wait. The water temp is sitting around 66°F, which is just about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first session worth paddling out for is Friday afternoon, July 3rd at Hullets Reef. The morning is a write-off with a marginal 7ft SE swell and cross winds, but the afternoon cleans right up. We’re looking at a solid 8ft SE groundswell with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind goes glassy from the SSE. That’s a major positive; those conditions will give you clean, lined-up waves. The combined wave energy is strong at 1515, so there’s plenty of power. This is a reef break that’s fairly exposed, so it will handle that SE swell nicely. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with 8ft swell, it’s pushing into more intermediate territory. The best bet is this Friday afternoon.
Saturday, July 4th is another good one. The morning is a bit average with a cross wind, but Saturday afternoon is glassy again with a 6ft swell, still from the SE and a solid 12-second period. The energy is still moderate at 1107, and the clean conditions will make it a fun session for a wide range of surfers. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get out there early or late.
Now, for the standout. Look ahead to Monday morning, July 6th. The swell has shifted to the SW, coming in at 7ft with a 12-second period. The wind is glassy from the north, and this spot is optimum for a SE swell, but the SW swell will still wrap in nicely. The energy is very strong at 1542, and these are excellent conditions for experienced surfers. If you’re comfortable in that size range, this is the morning to circle.
After that, things get a bit tricky. There’s a big pulse of SW swell coming through from Wednesday, July 8th onwards, with sizes jumping to 8ft and 10ft, and even 12ft by Thursday the 9th. The problem is the wind turns messy, with strong cross-off and cross-on breezes that will chop things up. The 14-second period on that Wednesday the 8th is very long, which is great for reef breaks like this, but the wind is just not playing ball. This period is really only for the experts who can handle a bit of texture on big, powerful waves.
We then hit a real lull. From Saturday, July 11th through to Tuesday morning, July 14th, the wind is mostly onshore and the surf quality tanks. It’s going to be a frustrating run of poor conditions, with lumpy, choppy seas and dropping swell. You might as well save your energy.
Then, just when you think it’s over, the forecast throws a wild card. Thursday afternoon, July 16th, we get a massive 16ft SW swell with a 12-second period, and the wind goes offshore from the southwest. The combined wave energy is off the charts at 7598. This is exceptional surf, but absolutely only for expert surfers. If you’re not one, stay on the sand.
Friday morning, July 17th is also a monster, with a 13ft SW swell and glassy winds. The energy is 4539. Again, big, clean, and powerful. The following Saturday is still big, with 12ft S swell and offshore winds in the afternoon.
So, the real highlights? Friday afternoon July 3rd and Monday morning July 6th are your best bets for clean, manageable, fun surf. The massive swells at the end of the window are for the elite crew only, and the long-range calls are less certain, but the potential is there for something truly special.
Rusty.
