The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up.
We’ve got a solid stretch of surf on the menu at Hullets Reef. This is a reef break, and it breaks fairly consistently, which is always a good sign. The water temp is 56°F, which is a massive 10°F colder than usual for this time of year – that’s brutally cold, so you’ll need your thickest rubber and maybe some booties. The swell is coming mostly from the SW, while the optimum direction is SE, so take that as you will.
The action starts on Monday 17th August morning. Clean 8ft SW swell with a long 14-second period, combined energy is strong at 2205. The wind is glassing right offshore from the SW, so it’s going to be perfect. This is groundswell, so expect nice shaped waves but longer lulls between sets. It’s over 5ft, so it’s a bit much for beginners, but for experienced surfers, this is a ripper. That’s the standout early session.
Monday afternoon drops right off to a tiny 3ft swell with poor conditions – not worth getting wet.
Tuesday 18th August morning is a bit messy with 7ft SW swell and cross-off winds, but the Tuesday afternoon fires right back – 8ft SW swell, 13-second period, and clean offshore winds. Energy is very strong at 2272. Another excellent window for the experienced crew.
Wednesday 19th August morning brings a big 10ft SW swell, strong energy at 2450, and cross-off winds, but it’s clean. That’s expert territory. The afternoon gets blown out by 22 mph winds, so skip it.
Thursday 20th August morning sees a huge 13ft SW swell with very strong energy at 5399, but it’s a bit wind-affected. The Thursday afternoon is the real standout of the whole forecast. You’ve got 13ft SW swell, a long 13-second period, and light cross-off winds making it clean. Combined energy is massive at 4950. This is big, powerful, and for experts only – but if you can handle it, this will be an epic session. Crowds are sometimes here, so expect a few others out, but at that size, most people will be watching from the sand.
Friday 21st August morning is blown out by onshore winds, but the afternoon is a beauty – 8ft SW swell, 12-second period, and glassy conditions with 3 mph wind. Energy is moderate at 1378. Clean, lined-up waves.
Saturday and Sunday (22nd & 23rd) have more good clean sessions with solid 8ft to 10ft SW swells. The Saturday afternoon is worth a look – 8ft with moderate offshore winds, clean and punchy. The Sunday morning and afternoon both look great with light winds and strong energy.
The pattern continues strong through to the end of August. Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th have more clean, solid SW groundswell in the 8ft to 10ft range with light to gentle offshore winds. Good consistency.
Things go quiet from Wednesday 26th August through to Thursday 27th August – mostly poor conditions, onshore winds, and weak energy (470 to 1217). A couple of days to rest up.
Friday 28th August morning sees a big 8ft SW swell return with a very long 15-second period, but cross-onshore winds make it choppy. The afternoon is a bit cleaner with light cross-shore wind.
The last weekend of August (29th & 30th) offers some decent clean waves, with Saturday 29th afternoon being the pick – 7ft SW swell, clean offshore winds, moderate energy at 1632.
Monday 31st August morning brings another massive 13ft SW swell, very strong energy at 4728, but light cross-shore winds. The afternoon gets messy with rain and onshore winds.
Things fade and get messy into the first days of September, with poor conditions and strong onshore winds. Not worth it.
So, the standout sessions are Thursday 20th August afternoon for the big-wave hunters (13ft, powerful, clean) and Monday 17th August morning for a slightly smaller but still excellent session. Get on it early. Those long-period swells will hold up nicely on the reef.
Stay warm, stay safe.
Rusty.
