The Lowdown
Text 2 (Imperial)
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Hullets Reef. This is a solid reef setup that’s fairly exposed to the swell and prefers it from the SE. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The next few days are looking pretty good. We’ve got a clean, 8ft swell from the SW on Sunday the 23rd with a cross-offshore breeze. The energy is pumping at 1470. It’s a bit on the bigger side, so this one is for the experienced crew. It stays clean through Sunday afternoon with a nice 7ft, straight offshore wind, and energy up to 1583. That’s a solid session.
Moving into Monday the 24th, it’s still clean. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, but the period lengthens to 12 seconds, giving it some real push. The energy is moderate at 1013, and with a light cross-offshore breeze, it’s got very good surf written all over it. Monday afternoon gets even better, with a 6ft swell and gentle offshore wind, energy at 1256. That’s a fun, clean wave for a lot of standards.
Now, Tuesday the 25th brings a bit of a pulse. The morning shows a 10ft, 14-second groundswell from the SW. That’s a long period, which means good shape and long gaps between sets. The energy is strong at 3249, but it’s a bit cloudy and the wind is cross-offshore. It’s a bit much for the average surfer. Tuesday afternoon settles into a 8ft swell with a clean offshore wind, energy at 2922 – excellent for experienced surfers.
We hit a bit of a wall from Wednesday the 26th through the end of the month. Wednesday has a massive 10ft, 16-second swell from the S, but the wind is howling onshore at 22-25 mph. Energy is through the roof at 4041, but it’s a total mess. This is more of a kite-surfing deal than a paddle session. Thursday and Friday are blown out or weak, with wind on it and small, junky waves. Saturday the 29th is a write-off with strong cross-shore winds. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st see the swell drop right off to under 3ft, but the wind goes offshore. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Then, we get a second pulse. Tuesday the 1st of September kicks off with a 10ft, 13-second SW swell and a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong at 2779. That’s excellent for the experienced crew. Wednesday the 2nd of September looks like the standout. The afternoon has a 12ft, 14-second SW swell with a clean offshore wind. The energy is a massive 4871. This is a big, powerful, clean wave for experts only. The confidence is lower out this far, but it looks promising.
The following days, Thursday the 3rd of September has a massive 15ft swell with a light cross-offshore wind, energy at 7077. That’s an exceptional, heavy wave, but things get blown out or messy after that.
So, the best on offer is the clean, solid swell on Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th. The real standout, if it comes together, is the massive, clean, offshore swell on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Keep your eyes on that one.
Rusty.
