Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look for Hullets Reef. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up over the next couple of weeks, so let’s get into it.
The week kicks off with some potential. Sunday the 5th is a bit of a warm-up – we’ve got a 5ft swell from the SE, but it’s a cross-on wind, making it a bit of a scratchy session. The afternoon cleans right up though, with a 4ft swell from the ESE and light offshore winds (WSW at 6 mph). That’s a good sign of things to come. The real highlight is Monday morning, the 6th. Absolute glass, flat calm, with a 6ft SW groundswell and a long 12-second period. The combined energy is reading 1045 (moderate), and it’s going to be clean, lined-up, and perfect for the beginner-friendly reef. This is the standout of the early run.
Tuesday the 7th builds on that. The swell pushes to 7ft from the SW (12 seconds), and Tuesday afternoon sees offshore winds (WSW at 9 mph) and clean conditions. By Wednesday the 8th, the swell is getting solid – 8ft from the SW, but the wind is howling (W at 28 mph), so it’s messy. The swell really peaks on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th. We’re looking at 10ft to 12ft SW groundswells with a 13-second period, and the combined energy rockets into the strong range (up to 3684 on Thursday morning). Thursday afternoon and Friday morning are the best of this pulse: clean, offshore winds (WSW and SSW), and waves that are only for experienced surfers. This is proper groundswell – it’s powerful, with long lulls between sets, but the shape will be world-class on the reef. It’s too big for beginners at over 8ft.
After that, Saturday the 11th is a write-off with strong onshore winds, and the swell backs off heading into the second week. Sunday the 12th through Monday the 13th sees smaller surf (4ft to 6ft) but with clean conditions and lighter winds. The crowds are listed as “sometimes” here, so you might have some company, but it’s a fairly consistent spot so it’s worth a look.
There’s a long gap of poor conditions from Tuesday the 14th through to the end of the run. Strong winds, short-period windswell, and just messy energy. The only glimmer in that second week is Sunday the 19th. The afternoon session shows a 3ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period and gentle offshore winds. The combined energy is 1116 (moderate) and it’s described as “very good.” That’s a promising but less certain call for the long range.
So, overall, the pick of the week is Monday morning, the 6th, for the glassy, clean beginner-to-intermediate waves. For the experienced crew, the big, clean groundswell on Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th is the one to circle. The water temp is about average for the time of year, but with that big swell, it’ll feel fresh.
Rusty.
