The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a real mixed bag of a forecast coming up at Hullets Reef.
This spot is a reef break, and it’s fairly consistent, so it’s never a total write-off, but we’re looking at a big window of junk before things get good. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so don’t forget a decent hood if you’re heading out early.
The first real action doesn’t kick in until Friday, the 17th of July. The morning is a bit messy with a cross-off wind and a solid 10ft SW swell, but the energy is pumping at 2151. It’s a bit of a beast for the average punter, though. The standout is the Friday afternoon session. The wind swings offshore from the WSW at a light 6 mph, cleaning up that 8ft SW swell (1458 energy). It’s excellent for experienced surfers, and the swell direction is right on the money for this reef. That’s your go-to for the first few days.
The weekend (Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th) is a bit of a write-off. The swell drops off, but the wind gets up, turning it bumpy and ugly. By Sunday afternoon, the wind is howling at 28 mph from the WSW with a messy 10ft swell. It’s not great for a paddle, but with that much wind and swell, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After a dirty Monday, we get a tease on Tuesday the 21st. The Tuesday morning session is glassy with a 5ft SW groundswell. The period is a very long 15 seconds, which means proper energy and long waits between sets. It’s a reef break, so that long period will wrap in nicely. The energy is a solid 1281. This is a good one for the connoisseur.
Then, hold onto your board. The real event is Thursday the 24th of July. The Thursday morning is an absolute stunner: glassy, 13ft of SW swell with a 16-second period, and the energy is off the charts at 7158. This is exceptional, but it’s for experts only. The Friday morning on the 31st of July is also a glassy one, with a very clean 8ft SSW swell and a 10-second period. That’s a solid, clean option for experienced surfers.
The beginning of August (Saturday the 1st) sees the wind turn onshore and the quality drop off completely. So, to wrap it up: the best offers are the Friday afternoon (17th July) for the clean offshore conditions, and the Thursday morning (24th July) for the absolute mammoth, glassy groundswell for the experts.
Rusty.
