The Lowdown

Alright, mates, let's have a look at what's coming up for us. This is a self-contained outlook for our local spot, so I'm not looking anywhere else.

The water temperature is coming in at 60°F which is a full 6°F colder than normal for this time of year. That's very unusual, so you're going to want a good 5/4 and booties. Don't say I didn't warn you.

We've got a bit of a quiet start, then things really start to fire up. The first real standout arrives on the afternoon of Thursday, August 20th, but it's a big one. The swell at Hullets Reef is a solid 12 ft from the SW, with a period of 13 seconds and a combined energy of 4678. That's a powerful, long-period groundswell with a lot of grunt. The wind is light offshore from the SW, so the conditions will be clean. But listen, 12 ft is big, and this is a reef break, so this is strictly for experienced surfers. The energy is moderate to strong, and the sets will have some real push.

The next morning, Friday August 21st, the swell drops to 8 ft with a light onshore breeze from the NE. It's a bit marginal with the wind, but the swell is still solid. The afternoon turns into a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds.

Saturday the 22nd is a no-go, with gale-force winds.

Now, Sunday morning the 23rd is where it gets interesting. The swell is back up to 8 ft from the SW with an 11-second period and a combined energy of 1732. But the key here is the wind: it's glassy. Absolutely dead calm. For a reef break, that's a dream. The surf will be clean and lined up. 8 ft is still a bit much for beginners, but for anyone with experience, this is a great session. The afternoon sees a cross-shore wind come in, making it a bit messy.

Monday the 24th brings a moderate offshore breeze for the morning, with a clean 7 ft SW swell. It's a very good option, but the energy is moderate.

The big one, and the real standout of the whole run, is Tuesday morning, August 25th. We've got a 10 ft swell from the SW, but the period has jumped to 14 seconds. That's a very long period groundswell. The combined energy is a massive 3208, meaning strong, powerful waves. And the wind? Glassy again. This is a recipe for perfection. This is a serious, powerful reef break wave. It's for experts only at this size, but it will be an epic session. The afternoon gets ruined by a cross-onshore wind.

After that, the swell drops off significantly. Wednesday and Thursday the 27th see much smaller waves, around 4 ft, with glassy conditions on Thursday afternoon, but the energy is low.

We then have a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions from the 28th of August through to the 2nd of September. The wind is mostly strong or cross-shore, and the swell is inconsistent. Not worth paddling out for.

Then, hold onto your boards. On Thursday morning, September 3rd, we get a monster. The swell is a staggering 18 ft from the SW, with a 14-second period. The combined energy is 11,359. That's severe, life-threatening wave energy. The wind is light, but that is a solid, heavy, big-wave day. The afternoon sees a 16 ft SW swell with a light offshore, and it's marked as exceptional. This is for a very select few big-wave chargers only. The 4th of September still has an 12 ft swell, but the wind picks up, making it more of a challenge.

To sum it up: the morning of Sunday the 23rd is a clean, solid option for intermediates. But the absolute standout, the one you don't want to miss, is Tuesday morning, August 25th. That's glassy, long-period, powerful groundswell at Hullets Reef. Mark it on your calendar, but be ready for the cold water.

Rusty.
