Table - best surf conditions forecast for Hullets Reef over the next 16 days.

The Lowdown

Right, let's have a look at what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.

We're looking at a fun little run of surf at Hullets Reef. This is a reef break, so it handles a bit of size well, and it's fairly exposed to the swell. The water temperature is sitting at 60°, which is a whopping 6° colder than usual for this time of year. That's a serious chill, so you'll be wanting a quality steamer and maybe some booties if you're sensitive to the cold.

The pattern starts off a bit rocky. The first day we've got anything on the cards is Friday the 21st, but it's not great. We've got a 7ft SW swell with a moderate cross-onshore breeze, making it choppy and poor. The combined energy is sitting at 1308, which is strong, but the conditions are just not with us. Saturday the 22nd is a write-off too, with a near-gale force wind.

Sunday the 23rd is where things start to look up. The morning is still a bit marginal with a 8ft SW swell and a cross-off breeze, but by the afternoon it cleans right up. You've got a solid 7ft SW swell, light offshore winds, and the energy is pumping at 1584. The comment says it's excellent for experienced surfers, and that's a good call. The direction is right on the money for what this reef likes.

Monday the 24th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is marginal, and the afternoon is clean with a 6ft swell and offshore winds, but still questionable for tide. It's rideable, but not the standout.

Then we get to the big one. Tuesday the 25th is the highlight of the whole outlook. Both morning and afternoon are glassy. The morning has a 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period, glassy conditions, and a massive combined energy of 3301. That's a lot of power. The afternoon is also glassy with a 10ft swell. This is strong, powerful groundswell that will be absolutely pumping at this reef. It's a big day, only for experts, but if you're confident, it's the session to circle.

After that, the wind becomes a problem for a few days. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th see onshore and cross-onshore winds messing up the quality, even though the swell energy is still high. The periods get long, up to 16 seconds, but the wind kills it.

Friday the 28th morning offers a brief reprieve with glassy conditions and a 5ft S swell, pegged as "very good". But the wind swings back onshore by the afternoon.

The next weekend is a bit of a washout, with some big winds and messy surf. Sunday the 30th has rain showers and strong offshore winds, but the swell is tiny.

Monday the 31st of August is another very promising morning. Glassy conditions, an 8ft SW swell, and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The energy is strong at 1784. This is a good one if you missed the Tuesday session.

The first week of September has a few more windows. Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon looks clean with offshore winds and a 5ft swell. Thursday the 3rd of September morning is the pick of that week: a 8ft SW swell, 14-second period, light offshore winds, and a very strong energy reading of 2024. Excellent conditions for the experienced crew.

The final few days are a bit messy with a mix of directions and some strong onshore winds, but there's a glimmer on Saturday the 5th of September morning with glassy conditions and an 8ft ESE swell that looks very good.

So, to sum it up: the absolute standout is Tuesday the 25th of August – that's the big, glassy, powerful groundswell day. The second best is Monday the 31st of August morning, also glassy and solid. After that, Thursday the 3rd of September morning is a solid late option. Most of the other days are either too windy, too small, or just marginal. Crowds are possible here, so get in early on the good days.
