Alright, let’s break it down.
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Looking at the next couple weeks at Hullets Reef, we’ve got a real mixed bag. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing wild there. The opening window looks promising, but things get dicey with size and wind as the week wears on, then we’re chasing windows in the second half.
The week kicks off on Monday morning, July 6th with a glassy start. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell from the SW with a nice 12-second period. The combined energy is solid at 1119, and with the wind dead calm and glassy, it’s about as clean as it gets. This is your best bet of the whole run—a real standout. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break, but that’s the sweet spot for a fun session.
By Monday afternoon, the wind swings E at 15 km/h and goes cross-on, making things choppy. The swell holds at 6 ft, but the quality drops fast.
Tuesday July 7th is still solid size-wise (7 ft SW at 12 seconds), but the wind is tricky. Morning has a strong 25 km/h W cross-off that’ll clean it up, but it’s not ideal. Afternoon turns magical though: a light 5 km/h SSW offshore wind with the same swell gives you clean lines. That afternoon session is another gem.
Wednesday July 8th sees the swell building to 8 ft and then 10 ft with a longer 13-second period. But the wind is cranking from the W at 35 km/h, so it’s cross-off and blustery. The energy is climbing (up to 3067 in the afternoon), but it’s a battle. This is getting into expert territory size-wise, and with that wind, it’s a serious paddle.
Thursday July 9th gets even bigger, with 12 ft SW swell and 14-second periods. The energy is huge at 3978, but it’s still cross-off and windy at 30 km/h. Not the cleanest for a reef break, but if you’re an experienced surfer, there’s power to be had.
Friday July 10th is a write-off. Big 12 ft swell from the SSW, but the wind is onshore from the NE in the morning, and then a strong 30 km/h E cross-on in the afternoon making it lumpy. Scores zero for a reason.
Saturday July 11th is a washout too, with onshore winds and a slight drop in size to 7 ft. The afternoon sees a 35 km/h W cross-off, but the quality is still marginal. There’s a gap here of several days with no real recommendations.
Sunday July 12th swings weird. The swell drops to 6 ft but comes from the ESE with only 8 seconds. The wind is a strong 40 km/h SSW offshore, so it’s clean but incredibly hard to paddle into with that short period. The energy drops to 857. Not fun.
From Monday July 13th through Wednesday July 15th, it’s mostly poor with strong winds and messy conditions. The swell on July 15th jumps to 13 ft from the SW, but with 50 km/h winds, it’s just a washing machine. Kite surfers might eye it, but for us, it’s a no-go.
Then we get one more standout window: Thursday July 16th. The morning is still big at 13 ft and 14-second SW swell with moderate cross-off wind, but still marginal. The magic is in the afternoon: the wind drops to a light 10 km/h WSW offshore, the swell settles to 12 ft from the SW at 14 seconds, and the energy is massive at 5086. The file calls it excellent for experienced surfers, and I’m with that. This is the second best day, but only for the brave.
After that, Friday July 17th through Sunday July 20th is mostly onshore or small. The swell fades to under 3 ft by the 20th. A brief pulse shows up on Tuesday July 21st with a 6 ft SSW swell and a very long 16-second period, but with a 30 km/h cross-off wind, it’s more of a promise than a guarantee.
Best on offer: Monday morning July 6th and Thursday afternoon July 16th. The Monday is the all-rounder for the masses; the Thursday is for the hardcore.
Rusty.
