The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s cooking for the next stretch. We’ve got one spot on the menu, and it’s a reef setup that’s going to keep us busy.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at Hullets Reef. The water temp is sitting pretty much average for this time of year, so nothing wild there – just standard July fare. The first real action kicks off on Sunday the 19th of July. The morning has a clean 4.9ft swell rolling in from the SW, with a light cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is moderate (803), and it’s a nice, clean setup. A solid beginner-friendly option to start the day, but don’t expect it to last.
Sunday afternoon gets a bit more interesting. The swell bumps up to 5.6ft, still SW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind swings offshore and freshens up to 35 km/h, which cleans things up nicely. The energy jumps to moderate-strong (1129), but the score drops due to tide concerns. If you’re a confident surfer, the afternoon window might be worth a look, but it’s not a standout.
The real standout hits on Monday the 20th of July. The morning is a bit of a dud with a 3.9ft SE swell and a long 12-second period – that’s groundswell, but it’s cross-offshore and only moderate energy (602). Skip it. The afternoon, though, is where it’s at. We get a solid 6.6ft SW swell with an 11-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the SW. The energy is strong (1334), and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is your best bet in the first week: a powerful, clean wave at a reef break. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Tuesday the 21st is a mixed bag. The morning has a 5.6ft SW swell with a very long 15-second period. That’s proper groundswell, but it’s onshore from the NE, so the surface is messy. The energy is high (1535), but the wind ruins it. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 8.2ft from the SSW, but with a strong cross-onshore wind and 14-second period, it’s a choppy, blown-out mess. Not worth it.
Wednesday the 22nd brings a 7.2ft SW swell in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze, making for clean waves. The energy is strong (1588), but the quality is marginal. The afternoon gets hammered by a 40 km/h cross-offshore, which is too strong for a clean ride. Thursday the 23rd is a step down, with a 4.6ft to 6.6ft SW swell, clean but not very powerful.
Now, here’s where things get interesting long-range. Friday the 24th of July is a big one. The morning sees a 13.1ft SSW swell with a 16-second period. That’s a massive, long-period groundswell. The combined energy is very strong (7207), but the wind is light onshore from the NE. This is expert-only territory – 13.1ft is huge, and the long period at a reef will make it hollow and powerful. Not for the faint of heart. The afternoon drops to 11.5ft SW, still very long period (15 seconds), with a light cross-shore. Still only for experts.
Saturday the 25th of July is another standout. Morning session has a 9.8ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and the wind is glassy – from the ENE at just 5 km/h. That’s about as clean as it gets. The energy is very strong (2918), and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is the best-looking window in the whole forecast: a big, clean, glassy reef break. If you’re an expert, this is your morning. The afternoon gets a bit chopped with a cross-onshore wind, so the morning is the call.
After that, the second week gets a bit messy. Sunday the 26th has a 5.9ft SW swell with onshore winds – poor conditions. Monday the 27th brings a 5.9ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period and a cross-shore wind. The energy is huge (3702), but the wind is just okay. Tuesday the 28th is a 11.5ft SSW swell with fresh cross-shore winds and light rain – messy. Wednesday the 29th is blown out by near-gale force winds, so don’t
