The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, and while there’s a bit of a wait for the first wave, the payoff is gonna be worth it for the crew that knows what they’re doing. The swell is coming in strong, but it’s not for everyone.
The first session worth paddling out for is on Friday morning, August 21st. The water is sitting at 60°, which is a massive 6° colder than normal for this time of year – that’s some seriously unusual, chilly water, so don’t be shy with the thick rubber. The main event is Hullets Reef. It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, and likes the swell from the SE. We’re looking at a solid 8ft groundswell out of the SW, with a nice 12-second period, and the combined energy is strong at 1616. The wind is a glassy 3 mph out of the ESE. That’s clean, offshore conditions. This is a standout for the confident surfer, as the swell is over 8ft, so it’s expert territory. The waves will have plenty of power and shape, but you’ll earn every drop. The water is cold, but the conditions are prime.
That afternoon, the wind picks up to 12 mph cross-on and the surf quality drops, so make the most of the morning.
Saturday morning, August 22nd, is a write-off with 31 mph winds, and the afternoon is clean but the swell is dropping. Sunday morning, August 23rd, we’re back in business. It’s a clear morning with a gentle 9 mph offshore wind from the WSW. The swell is 8ft from the SW, 11-second period, and the energy is strong at 1543. This is another excellent session for experienced surfers with clean, offshore lines. The afternoon keeps the quality with a 7ft swell and clean cross-off wind.
Monday, August 24th, is very good but a little smaller, with 7ft swell and clean conditions. Tuesday, August 25th, is a massive standout. The morning looks incredible: a 10ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, combined energy at a whopping 3420. The wind is a silky 3 mph offshore. That’s a long-period groundswell that will be winding up perfectly at this reef. It’s expert-only, but the quality is off the charts. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy.
Wednesday, August 26th, and Thursday, August 27th, are ruined by onshore winds. Friday morning, August 28th, offers a smaller, but glassy 5ft S swell – a good option for a lighter day.
The next big standout is a week and a half out. Sunday, August 30th, is a monster. The morning shows a 16ft SW swell with 13-second period and a combined energy of 9425 – that’s very strong, powerful water. The wind is a clean 25 mph cross-off. This is massive, heavy, and for experts only. The afternoon sees a 15ft swell with a clean offshore wind – still huge, but the quality is there for the big-wave crew.
Wednesday morning, September 2nd, we get a 7ft SW groundswell, but the wind is onshore, so it’s questionable.
The absolute best of the whole run is likely Thursday morning, September 3rd. A 15ft SW groundswell, 14-second period, combined energy of 8072, and a light 6 mph offshore wind. The forecast calls this exceptional for experts. The water will be a washing machine, but the waves will be perfect, heavy barrels. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon gets chopped up.
Friday, September 4th, and into the weekend, the swell stays solid (10ft to 8ft) with clean offshore winds, offering more great sessions for confident surfers. Saturday, September 5th, finishes the forecast with a 10ft, 16-second groundswell and gentle offshore wind – 4695 energy, another excellent session for the experienced.
Overall, there’s a gap of no real surf until the 21st, but from then on it’s a solid run of size, with the standout mornings being August 21st, 25th, 30th, and that killer September 3rd. The long-period swells at this reef will be world-class, but the size means it’s for the experienced crew only. The water is way colder than normal, so suit up.
Rusty out.
