The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Hullets Reef. We've got a solid run of good surf shaping up, but there are a few wild days in the mix too.

The water is sitting at a chilly 56°F, which is a massive 10°F colder than usual for this time of year. That’s way out of the ordinary, so if you’re paddling out, a good thick wetsuit is non-negotiable.

We start off with a bang on Monday the 17th. The morning session is where it’s at with a clean 8ft south-west swell and light offshore winds. The energy is strong at 2205, and those conditions are hard to beat. The afternoon fades fast though, dropping to a weak 3ft easterly windswell (185) – not worth getting wet for.

Tuesday the 18th sees a return of the juice. The afternoon is the standout: a clean 8ft south-west swell with a gentle offshore breeze, energy pumping at 2272. This is proper stuff for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 19th morning is also a winner with a big 10ft south-west swell and light winds. That’s getting into serious territory, so it’s for the skilled crew only.

Thursday the 20th is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell is massive (13ft morning, 12ft afternoon) with very strong energy (5788, 4471), but it’s a bit messy with cross-off and cross-shore winds. The waves will be there, but not as clean as the other days. Friday the 21st cleans up nicely with clean 8ft and 7ft south-west swells and offshore breezes. Very good, solid surf.

The first week wraps up with a big day on Saturday the 22nd. The morning is a bit small and weak, but the afternoon fires up with a 10ft south-west swell and a clean offshore wind. That’s another one for the experienced crew. Sunday the 23rd is a dream: both morning and afternoon serve up clean, glassy conditions with 8ft and 8ft south-west swells. Light offshore winds make for some of the cleanest waves of the whole run.

Now, there’s a bit of a lull mid-week. Monday the 24th is still very good, especially the glassy morning, but Tuesday the 25th is a little more mixed. The standout for the second week is actually the afternoon of Tuesday the 25th: a clean 10ft south-west swell with light offshore winds and energy at 2563. That’s a solid performance.

We hit a rough patch on Wednesday the 26th with strong cross-onshore winds making a mess of the 8ft swell. That’s a write-off. Thursday the 27th is even worse with tiny, weak waves. It’s a two-day skip.

We bounce back strong on Friday the 28th. The morning goes glassy with a 7ft south-west swell – that’s a beautiful, clean start to the day. The afternoon is even better: a clean 8ft south-west swell with a moderate offshore breeze, energy at 1763. That’s a top-tier session. Saturday the 29th keeps the run going with clean 7ft and 7ft swells all day. Very consistent.

The final few days get a bit wild. Sunday the 30th afternoon sees a massive 15ft south-west swell, but it’s quite short period (10 seconds) and a bit onshore. That’s big, messy, and not for the faint-hearted. Monday the 31st is the biggest day of the whole outlook. We’re talking a 13ft south-west swell in the morning, and the afternoon is a solid 13ft with a clean offshore wind and energy spiking at 6310. This is massive, powerful groundswell, but at a long period of 14 seconds it’ll be breaking heavy and fast. That’s strictly for big-wave chargers. Tuesday the 1st of September stuffs it up with a strong onshore flow, so we end on a poor note.

So, if you’re looking for the absolute best, lock in Sunday the 23rd for the cleanest conditions, or Tuesday the 25th afternoon for the power. For the brave, Monday the 31st afternoon is a monster session.

Rusty.
