The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. We've got a fair run of swell on the way for Hullets Reef, but it's a tale of two halves. The first week is looking like the winner, with that second week bringing in some serious size and a few messy windows.

We're starting off Saturday the 18th, but it's a bit of a slow burn. The swell is only 4ft from the S with a 11-second period, and the combined energy (759) is just moderate. The cross-off west wind is okay, but it's not firing. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so maybe grab a thicker spring suit.

Sunday the 19th looks a touch better. The morning has 5ft of SW swell (9-second period, 844 energy) and a gentler cross-off wind. It's clean, but not exactly a standout. The afternoon, however, gets a warning. The wind swings to a strong 25 mph cross-off, pushing the swell up to 8ft (12 seconds, 1786 energy). The size is there, but that wind is going to make it a battle.

Now, Monday the 20th is where things start to get interesting. The morning session is the pick of the early week. We've got a solid 7ft of SW swell (11 seconds, 1370 energy) with a light 6 mph cross-off breeze. The conditions are clean, and the energy is building. This is a good one for experienced surfers.

Tuesday the 21st is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning has a 5ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period (1434 energy), but the wind is onshore. That long period is going to make the waves fat and straight. The afternoon, though, is a gem. The swell picks up to 7ft from the SSW (14 seconds, 1998 energy) and the wind goes glassy. It'll be clean and powerful, but that long period will still make it a bit tricky for the beach break.

Wednesday the 22nd is when the size really kicks in. The afternoon is a true standout. The swell is 10ft from the SW (12 seconds, 5180 energy) with a moderate offshore wind. The combined energy is strong (5180), and the conditions are moderate offshore and clean. This is only for the experts, as it's well over 8ft. The morning is also good at 8ft (13 seconds, 1971 energy) with a cross-off wind, but the afternoon is the session.

Thursday the 23rd keeps the size up at 11ft from the SW (11 seconds, 2670 energy) in the morning with a moderate offshore, but there are rain showers. The afternoon drops to 10ft from the SSW (12 seconds, 2564 energy) with a light cross-off, so it's still clean and powerful.

Friday the 24th is the absolute peak of the swell. The morning is a massive 11ft from the SSW with a very long 15-second period (6171 energy) and a gentle cross-off wind. That's a heavy, clean, powerful swell. The combined energy is very strong (6171). Only a handful of experts should be looking at this. The afternoon is still 10ft (15 seconds, 4056 energy) but with a stronger cross-off.

Then we hit the second week, and it gets a bit messy. Saturday the 25th has 10ft of SW swell (14 seconds, 3730 energy) but the wind is cross-on, and by the afternoon it's choppy from the east. Sunday the 26th has onshore winds and a 7ft to 8ft SW swell (12 to 16 seconds, 2108 to 2798 energy) – not good.

Into the next week, Monday the 27th afternoon is a last little glimmer, with 7ft of SW swell (13 seconds, 1670 energy) and glassy conditions. Wednesday the 29th morning also has a big 11ft (13 seconds, 3580 energy) with a gentle cross-off, but it's a week away. The last real standout is Thursday the 30th afternoon, with a 11ft SSW swell (11 seconds, 2344 energy) and a gentle offshore wind. By the end of the run, the wind is getting wild, with a near gale on the 31st and 28 mph winds on the 1st of August.

In short, your best bets are Monday the 20th morning for a solid, clean session, and Wednesday the 22nd afternoon for the big, clean, expert-level swell. If you're looking at the second week, Thursday the 30th afternoon is the one to watch, but it's a long way off.

Rusty.
