G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s ahead for Hullets Reef – a pretty reliable little reef break that’s good for beginners when it’s not too big. Right now, the ocean’s got some serious energy brewing, with combined swell energy readings climbing into the thousands over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at 64.4°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so maybe grab that extra rashie.
First up, Tuesday the 7th of July. Morning sees a clean 6.9 ft SW swell at 12 seconds, with a moderate W breeze making it cross-off, so the faces should be tidy. Not a standout, but solid for a beginner-friendly wave. That afternoon, the wind swings around to a gentle offshore from the WSW, and the swell holds at 6.9 ft SW – that’s a lovely clean window right there. A decent start to the week.
Wednesday the 8th picks up a bit. Morning has 7.9 ft SW swell at 13 seconds, but that fresh W wind at 18.6 mph makes it cross-off and a little lumpy. Still, it’s clean wave faces. The afternoon gets windier – 24.9 mph WSW cross-off – and the swell drops to 6.9 ft. Not great, a bit rugged for a smooth ride.
Now, Thursday the 9th, the swell really fires up. 11.5 ft SW at 14 seconds in the morning, with cross-off WSW wind at 18.6 mph. Wave energy is pumping. That’s big – over 8.2 ft, so expert territory only. The afternoon holds at 9.8 ft SW, still big.
Friday the 10th of July is the standout of the first week. Morning delivers 9.8 ft SSW swell with a 13-second period and a light W breeze making it cross-off. The data says “excellent for experienced surfers” – and I feel that. That’s a solid, clean, powerful groundswell hitting a reef. This is for the crew who know what they’re doing. The afternoon sees that wind switch to a light SE cross-shore at 6.2 mph, still a big 11.5 ft SSW swell. Still big and punchy, but that cross-shore might put a tiny ripple on the face.
Saturday the 11th sours. Strong SE wind gusts up to 24.9 mph in the morning bring messy, poor conditions with a 7.9 ft SSW swell. The afternoon eases to a gentle cross-shore, but it’s still cross-chop. Not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are a mixed bag. Sunday’s onshore breeze and dropping swell – 4.9 ft SSW – make for choppy, weak waves. But Monday the 13th gives us a glassy morning! A 3.1 mph NNW breeze, 6.6 ft ESE swell at 10 seconds. That’s clean and rideable for all levels, though the period is short. After lunch, a light SE cross-shore kicks in, but still manageable.
From Tuesday the 14th through Wednesday the 15th, it gets weaker and wind-affected. Onshore winds and dropping swell (down to 5.9 ft) make for marginal surf at best. Wednesday afternoon sees a near-gale 37.3 mph WSW wind – that’s kite-surfing conditions, not paddle surfing. Thursday the 16th morning has poor 4.3 ft swell with strong winds. But that afternoon, a new 5.9 ft SW swell at 13 seconds rolls in with cross-off wind – a glimmer of hope.
Now, look ahead to Friday the 17th of July. Morning shows 9.8 ft SW at 13 seconds, but onshore NNE wind. The afternoon holds that 9.8 ft SW swell with a light E cross-onshore. It’s big and might be a bit bumpy, but there’s power there.
The next real standout hits Saturday the 18th of July. That morning has 9.8 ft SW swell at 11 seconds and a gentle cross-off WNW wind. The data says “excellent for experienced surfers.” That’s clean, big, and punchy on the reef. The afternoon eases to a 6.9 ft SW with moderate cross-off wind.
Sunday the 19th of July morning brings a big 11.5 ft SE swell at 9 seconds with a light cross-off WNW breeze – clean but short period, so the reef should still handle it. That afternoon jumps to 13.1 ft SE at 9 seconds with a light cross-shore ESE wind. That’s huge for the reef, pushing into expert-only territory.
Monday the 20th holds 11.5 ft to 13.1 ft SE swells with light winds through the morning. Tuesday the 21st sees the biggest energy of the
