The Lowdown
G'day, it’s Rusty here. Alright, let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pike for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, with some solid pulses of swell, but you really gotta be on the ball. Water temps are pretty standard for this time of year out at Hullets Reef (South West England).
We get going proper on Tuesday the 18th. There’s a decent 6.9ft SW groundswell moving through in the morning, with a 13-second period. It’s a touch cross-offshore, and the energy is strong (1661), but it’s not the cleanest. The afternoon is where it starts to get juicy. The swell jumps to 8.2ft, still from the SW, and the wind goes fully offshore and light. This is where it starts to get fun for anyone with some experience. The energy is really pumping (2249).
Wednesday the 19th looks like a morning mission. We’ve got a solid 9.8ft of SW swell with a 13-second period, and the wind is just a light cross-off. It's clean and powerful, with strong energy (2412). The afternoon, the wind swings around to the WSW and gets up to 22 mph. That's a fresh offshore breeze, but it can get a bit sketchy. Get out early.
Thursday the 20th is a big one. Swell jumps to a thumping 13.1ft in the morning, a proper SW groundswell. The energy is very strong (5710). But it’s a lot of water, and the conditions are a bit raw. The afternoon is your standout, no doubt. The swell backs off a touch to 11.5ft, but the wind drops right out to a light cross-off. It’s clean, powerful, and the energy is still huge (4540). This is the pick of the first week if you're a solid surfer. That’s some serious power.
Friday the 21st drops right off. The swell is still there at 7.9ft but the wind is onshore from the ENE, and it only gets messier later. The energy is weaker (1644). I’d give it a rest.
Saturday the 22nd is a washout – the swell is almost gone (0.7ft) and then a near-gale hits in the afternoon. The wind is howling from the WSW at 31 mph, even though it's offshore, you won't be able to get out. Not a chance.
Sunday the 23rd brings it back on. There’s a solid 11.5ft SW groundswell in the morning with a moderate offshore wind. It’s got excellent energy behind it (4059), and this is another morning for the experienced crew. The afternoon is a touch smaller at 9.8ft but still clean and offshore from the SW, holding strong energy (2802).
After that, the surf eases for a few days. Monday the 24th has a fun 7.2ft SW swell, but it’s glassy with light winds in the morning. The energy is moderate (1132), but it’s a good one for the longboarders. It backs off from there into the middle of the week. Tuesday the 25th has the swell back to 8.2ft with a very long 14-second period, but the wind turns onshore in the afternoon, so it gets chopped. Wednesday the 26th is small again with a 5.6ft SW swell but it is glassy in the afternoon. It's small but clean.
The following week, the swell fires back up but with more of a hit-and-miss vibe. Thursday the 27th starts with a strong offshore but only a tiny 1.6ft swell, not worth the paddle. Friday the 28th is better, with a clean 7.9ft SW swell in the afternoon and a moderate offshore wind, so that's your pick of that day.
Saturday the 29th has some serious size again. A 9.8ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period and light offshore winds in the morning. That’s another excellent session for the experts. But then Sunday the 30th is blown out with strong cross-onshore winds and messy 7.5ft – 9.8ft surf. Absolutely not.
The final day, Monday the 31st sees the swell still up at 8.2ft but with onshore winds and a choppy feel. Not great. But hold on, Tuesday the 1st of September looks like a proper treat. The surf is around 7.5ft from the SW with a moderate cross-offshore breeze in the morning. It’s clean and should be a solid end to the run. The period is a long 14-second one, which is nice.
For the standout, it's gotta be Thursday the 20th afternoon. That 11.5ft of SW swell with light winds is a proper session, and it's not going to be too out of control. The energy figures are huge. For the second week, Saturday the 29th morning with that 9.8ft+ swell and clean conditions is definitely promising, but it’s a long-range call, so don't be surprised if it changes. The long
