The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the look ahead for the only spot that’s showing any real promise in this 16-day window. Let’s get into it.
First up, we’re looking at Hullets Reef, a nice beginner-friendly reef break that’s fairly consistent and set up for a solid run of south-east swell. The water’s sitting at 63° right now, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—about 3° cooler, so don’t forget the booties if you’re heading out soon.
The pattern starts with a bit of a wait. The first real action kicks off Friday morning, July 17th, with a solid 10 ft SW swell, but it’s laced with a 12 mph cross-off wind that’ll keep it a bit messy. That afternoon, it cleans up nicely with a 6 mph offshore wind and 8 ft SW swell—clean, but not the standout. The energy’s already strong (2151 and 1458), so the ocean’s got some juice.
Come Saturday, July 18th, the swell drops way off to 4 ft and 5 ft, and the wind is cross-off all day. It’s just not happening—those marginal scores tell the story. Sunday, July 19th, is worse, with a 3 ft SW swell and a 22 mph cross-off wind that’s just a mess. You’d be better off waxing your board than paddling out.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday, July 20th, is your first true standout. The morning is glassy, dead calm, with a 8 ft SW swell coming in at 10 seconds. That’s a solid, punchy wave for experienced surfers, and with the wind at 3 mph from the NNE, it’s just about perfect. The energy is strong (1452). This is a real winner.
Tuesday, July 21st, keeps the good vibes: morning glass with 0 wind, 4 ft SW swell, and a very long 12-second period—that’s proper groundswell. The energy is moderate (1005), but it’ll be clean and lined up. Afternoon gets a bump to 6 ft SW with a 14-second period, even longer, and a light cross-off. That’s the kind of day you call in sick for.
Wednesday, July 22nd, is another big one. Morning 8 ft SW swell, 12 mph offshore wind, and a 13-second period—clean, powerful, and aimed right at the reef. The energy is strong (1937). Afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-off wind, but still an 8 ft SW swell. This is for the crew who can handle it.
Thursday, July 23rd, the swell jumps to 12 ft SW, but the wind turns cross-on, so it’s gonna be bumpy. Still, the energy is massive (3229+). Not the best, but if you’re desperate for a wave, it’s there.
Friday, July 24th, though—that’s the real gem of the whole forecast. Morning and afternoon both have 12 ft SW swell, a 16-second period—that’s extremely long, groundswell perfection—and offshore wind in the afternoon (9 mph) with clean conditions. The energy is enormous (5823 and 6560). This is a reef-break dream: long, powerful waves with plenty of push. Only for the experienced crew, but it’s the best day on offer.
Saturday, July 25th, still has 12 ft SW swell, but the wind is a fresh cross-off, so it’s a bit rougher. The energy is still huge (5952). Sunday, July 26th, is a write-off with onshore winds and messy conditions.
The following week, from July 27th onward, the swell stays solid but the quality drops. Monday, July 27th, is clean with 8 ft SW swell and a 14-second period—good, but not as sparkly as the week before. Tuesday, July 28th, gets cross-on wind, and by Wednesday, July 29th, it’s messy with strong winds.
The very end of the window, July 31st and August 1st, shows a few spikes of 10 ft to 13 ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-shore and lumpy—not the clean, glassy stuff we had earlier. The energy is still strong (5626, 2426), but you’ll be battling the chop.
So, if you’re picking a day, Monday, July 20th, and Friday, July 24th, are the true standouts. July 20th for the glassy morning and 8 ft SW, and July 24th for the absolute pumping 12 ft SW groundswell with offshore wind. The rest of the forecast is for the determined, but those two days are the ones you want to circle.
Rusty out.
