The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again – let me run through what’s lookin’ good for Kei Mouth in feet and miles per hour.
First off, the first ten days or so are pretty flat and bleak. From Tuesday the 18th of August, we’ve got a run of nearly no surf worth mentionin’. Most days show under 1ft, weak energy, often down in the single digits or teens – 13 ft-lbs or 34 ft-lbs, stuff like that – and the comments are callin’ it poor. You’ll find cross-shore breezes and chop, but not much else. It’s a real lull.
But then Thursday morning the 27th of August, the sea wakes up and it wakes up angry. We get 10ft from the ENE, with combined energy at 1957 ft-lbs (strong). That’s way over the 8ft mark, so this is expert-only water. The wind is cross-shore from the SSW at 16 mph, and the report says tide and wind are okay, but the swell is just too big for Kei Mouth. That morning is the standout – if you’re a charger, it’s your shot.
Friday the 28th brings 6ft from the SSE with a 14-second period – that’s long-period groundswell, energy at 1636 ft-lbs (strong). Wind is light cross-onshore from the S at 6 mph. The waves will have some shape because of that long period, but at a beach break it might break a bit straight. Still way better than the first week.
Into the first of September, Tuesday morning sees another 10ft from the ENE, again with favorable wind and tide – collectors only. The rest of that week stays on the bigger side, with 6-8ft waves, but most days are cross-shore and lumpy. Not the cleanest, but there’s size.
Water temp is about average, 68° – no big anomaly here.
So to sum it: if you’re an expert and hungry for big surf, the 27th and the 1st are your best bets. For everyone else, it’s a patient wait.
Rusty out.
