Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Kei Mouth over the next couple of weeks.
The first real action kicks off on Saturday, July 4th. We’ve got a solid pulse of swell rolling in, with waves hitting 8 ft out of the SE. That’s a powerful, long-period groundswell (12 seconds) pushing a heap of energy (1840), so this is definitely for the experienced crew only – beginners will be in over their heads. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a touch colder than usual for this time of year. The wind is light and cross-off from the WSW, so the morning session is looking clean and well-shaped. Expect crowds to be possible, but it’s early and the size might put a few people off. This is the standout session of the whole period.
Sunday morning, July 5th, is still a good call. The swell drops to 5 ft from the SE, still with a nice 12-second period, and the energy is still moderate (676). The wind swings around to a light cross-off from the NNE, keeping it clean. It’s a bit more manageable size-wise, but still a solid intermediate wave. Stick to the morning.
After that, we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday afternoon all the way through to Thursday, July 9th, the surf really goes flat or turns to mush with poor winds. There’s a tiny window on Monday, July 6th, with some 3 ft to 3 ft waves, and the afternoon goes glassy, but it’s just ordinary, small stuff. Not worth paddling out for.
The next thing that catches my eye is Saturday, July 11th. A big new swell fills in – 7 ft out of the S with a long 13-second period and a massive 1757 energy reading. But the wind is a bummer, blowing onshore from the E at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy. The setup is a beach, so it’s more likely to be a kite surfer’s playground than a clean paddle wave. Not one for us.
The following week is pretty uninspiring. There’s a chance on Monday, July 13th, with 4 ft from the ENE, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-off. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about. The rest of the week is a mix of small, short-period swell and onshore or cross-shore winds. The best bet in the second week might be Wednesday, July 15th, with 4 ft from the SSE and a 9-second period, though the wind is light cross-shore, leaving it a bit bumpy. And then Saturday, July 18th, looks like a clean, small day with 3 ft from the E and a gentle offshore wind, but it’s really just a fun little wave, not a standout.
So, to wrap it up: your absolute best window is Saturday morning, July 4th, at Kei Mouth. It’s big, it’s clean, and it’s got power. Sunday morning is a solid second choice. After that, it’s a waiting game for the next proper pulse.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
