The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, let’s see what’s cooking at Queensberry Bay. This is a classic point break and it’s in for a real mixed bag over the next couple of weeks.
The water is sitting at a chilly 64°, which is a massive 4° colder than normal for this time of year. That’s properly cold, so don’t even think about skipping the booties or a decent hood.
We start off with a clean little window on Wednesday morning, August 5th. The swell is a modest 4ft from the east, with a nice 10-second period pushing through. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW at just 3 mph, so it’s gonna be glassy. The combined energy is reading 346 (moderate), nothing huge, but it’ll be fun, clean lines. This is a solid, if small, start.
Thursday and Friday turn messy. The swell jumps up on Thursday afternoon to 7ft from the SSW, but the wind is cross-onshore and the period is a long 14 seconds, which at a point break is actually a good thing. The problem is the chop. The energy spikes to 2424 (strong) on Thursday afternoon, but it’s not well-shaped. Friday stays average with cross-shore winds.
Now, Saturday morning, August 8th, is where it gets interesting. The swell drops back to a clean 4ft from the SSW, but the period is a quality 14 seconds. The wind goes light cross-offshore from the WSW at 3 mph, and the energy is a solid 764 (moderate). The conditions are clean. This is a proper standout for the first week, but it’s small. If you want a fun, cruisy session, this is the one.
Sunday the 9th gets punchy. Morning sees 6ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, but the wind is light cross-shore, so it’s okay. The afternoon blows out to a messy 10ft from the south with a short, weak 8-second period. That 10ft is only for the experienced crew, and the wind is cross, so it’s not going to be pretty.
The following week is a write-off. Monday through to the following Sunday, August 10th to 16th, is plagued by strong onshore winds and big, lumpy swell. The combined energy readings are huge, hitting 2424 (strong) and 2062 (strong) on the 12th, but the wind is howling from the NE at 25 mph. The surf is going to be a washing machine. For a point break, this is more of a kite-surfing show than a paddling session. Beginners should stay well away from the 8ft+ days.
The light at the end of the tunnel comes on Tuesday, August 18th. The swell drops to a clean 3ft from the east, period is a lovely 11 seconds, and the combined energy is 401 (moderate). The morning wind is offshore from the NNW at 12 mph, and then the afternoon goes glassy with a light easterly breeze. This is the standout of the second week. It’ll be clean, small, and perfect for a longboard. The conditions are absolutely pristine.
Thursday the 20th also has a clean morning with a light cross-offshore wind, but the swell is only 3ft, so it’s a real small-wave option.
