The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Kleinemonde.
We’re staring down the barrel of a proper 16-day run, but it’s a slow burn. The first couple of days are just background noise – small, weak, and messy. The real action kicks off on Thursday, July 16, and that’s where the good stuff lives.
Thursday, July 16 is the standout. Early morning, we’ve got a clean 5ft SSW groundswell, period at 14 seconds, and a gentle offshore wind. The combined energy is a solid 1300 (moderate) – that’s proper juice. This is a point-and-beach setup, and with that long period, it’ll be a bit lined up and a bit fat on the beach, but Kleinemonde’s point section will be your friend. The water is running colder than usual at 64°, a full 4° below normal – so it’s a 3/2 and booties kind of visit. This is intermediate territory; 5ft is doable, and the light offshore will keep it glistening. The afternoon holds, too – 7ft SSW, still clean, just a touch cross-off. That’s a full day of excellent waves for experienced surfers, but it’s not too big to handle.
Friday, July 17 keeps the momentum. Morning sees 6ft SW, light cross-off, excellent conditions. The afternoon is okay, but the wind goes cross-on and light, so it’ll get a bit of bump. Still a fun day, just not as pristine as Thursday.
Saturday, July 18 fades a bit. Morning is 3ft S, clean, but the energy is dropping (561). Still a fun little push if you’re desperate, but it’s a step down. The afternoon gets windier and marginal.
Now, Sunday, July 19 is a beast, but it’s a beast for experts only. Morning has 8ft SW with a fresh 22 mph offshore wind – that’s clean and powerful, but 8ft is the high end of intermediate. The afternoon is 10ft SW, and the forecast says it’s too big for this break. That’s a solid pass for everyone except the pros. Combined energy is 1849 (moderate-strong) in the morning, and 1823 in the afternoon – it’s pushing.
Monday, July 20 sees a dip then a rebound. The morning is a mix, but the afternoon comes back with a 6ft SSW, 12-second period, and clean cross-off wind. That’s good quality for experienced surfers again.
Tuesday, July 21 is a monster. 13ft SW morning and afternoon, with long period (12-14 seconds). The energy is 9337 (strong) and 5958. Again, way too big for this break. Experts only, and even then, it’s a beast.
The pattern from Wednesday, July 22 through to the end of the month is a mix of big, clean, and too-big, or smaller and wind-affected. The 25th of July is worth a mention for the morning: 8ft SSW with a 19 mph offshore wind, period climbing to 18 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. The energy is 4569 (strong). That’s a serious, clean, powerful day for experts only. The 27th has a 5ft SSW, 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on, so it’s not clean.
The very end of the run, July 28 and 29, drop back to small, weak, and onshore. A bit of a whimper.
The call: Thursday, July 16, is your best all-rounder. It’s clean, it’s got size, and it’s not too big. Friday morning is also a cracker. After that, it’s either too big or too wind-blown until the 25th, which is a monster clean swell, but only for the brave.
Stay safe, and don’t be a hero on the 13ft days.
Rusty.
