The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I've got a look at what's coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks. Let's get straight into it.
First up, we're talking about Kleinemonde. This is a beach and point setup, and it's a fairly consistent spot. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The surf kicks off proper on Monday, August 24th. Monday morning you're looking at a clean 5 ft SSW swell, with a 12-second period giving it some nice push. The wind is a light cross-off, making for some clean lines. The combined energy is a solid moderate 722, and it's setting up for some very good surf. Monday afternoon stays clean with a slightly smaller 5 ft SW swell, still a solid 12-second period. This is a proper start to the week.
Tuesday, August 25th sees the swell bump up a bit. Morning is 5 ft from the SSW, but that period jumps to a very long 16 seconds. This is real groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong at 2293. The wind stays cross-off, so it will be clean, but the tide might be a slight factor. This kind of long-period swell at a point break can be magic, but it can also make a beach break a bit straight. It's still worth a paddle.
Now, we hit a rough patch. From Wednesday, August 26th through to Friday, August 29th, the wind goes onshore or cross-on, and the quality drops off. There's some size, but the conditions are poor. You're looking at a solid 10 ft on Wednesday afternoon, but with a 22 mph onshore wind, it's blown out. Thursday is even worse with near gale-force winds. That's a solid 4-day gap of no-go.
Saturday, August 30th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is small and clean but weak. The afternoon, however, is a different story. A 10 ft SW swell rolls in, but with a short period of 8 seconds. The wind is a fresh cross-off, so it'll be clean, but the file tells me it's predicted to be too big for this break. That's expert territory only, and even then, it's a messy windswell.
Monday, August 31st is the real standout. Monday morning delivers a clean 7 ft SW swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is offshore. Gentle offshore and clean conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 915, and it's shaping up for very good surf. This is the one to circle. The afternoon drops down to 5 ft, still clean.
Tuesday, September 1st has a decent morning, 5 ft SW with a light cross-off breeze. Clean, but nothing special.
From Wednesday, September 2nd onwards, the forecast gets a bit more uncertain and the conditions get tricky. There's size, but the wind is either strong offshore or cross-off. The 10 ft SSW swell on Friday, September 4th morning is too big and the wind is a near gale offshore, making it nearly impossible to paddle into. And by Sunday, September 6th, we're looking at a massive 10 ft SW swell with a very long 13-second period and a combined energy of 6135. That is huge, powerful, and for experts only. It's a promising sign for the future, but it's a long way off.
So, to wrap it up: The standout is Monday, August 31st morning. Get on it. The early part of the window on Monday, August 24th is also a good call. The rest is a mix of blown-out junk, massive cleanup sets, or hard-to-paddle-into conditions. There's a rough 4-day gap from the 26th to the 29th.
Rusty.
