The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about the only real option on the table for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at Kleinemonde, a beach and point set-up that’s exposed to the southwest. The water temp here is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
The first real chance to paddle out doesn’t come until Friday morning, August 21st. There’s a gap of several quiet days before that where there’s just nothing worth mentioning. Friday morning, we’ve got some clouds overhead, but the wind is glassy, coming in light from the SSW at just 3 mph. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the SSW with a nice 12-second period, and the combined swell energy is strong at 1302. This is proper groundswell, and for a point break that handles a southerly direction well, it’s going to be clean and punchy. This is the standout session for the whole outlook – a sweet spot for experienced surfers. The crowd factor is only “sometimes,” so you might have some company, but it won’t be a circus.
Friday afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the east at 9 mph, so the quality drops off quick. The swell hangs in at 6 ft, but it’s not nearly as clean.
Saturday the 22nd gets blown out by a strong WSW wind, and the swell jumps up to 10 ft with a short 8-second period by the afternoon. That’s expert-only territory, and the wind is messy, so honestly, this could be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th have clean conditions with gentle cross-offshore breezes and chest-to-head-high swell (5 ft to 8 ft), but the scores are just okay – the tide or shape keeps it from being top-tier, but it’s rideable.
Now, Tuesday morning, August 25th, is another standout. The swell is 8 ft from the SSW with a 14-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell, packing a punch. Combined energy is huge at 2363. Offshore wind from the WSW at only 6 mph means it’s going to be clean and powerful. Again, this is one for experienced surfers, as it’s a bit much for beginners. The point should handle that long period well, giving some proper walls.
After that, things get a bit patchy with onshore winds and smaller swells through the end of August. There’s a brief window on Sunday, August 30th, with an offshore wind (16 mph) and a 7 ft swell at 12 seconds. The wave energy is back up at 1291, and the conditions are clean. This is a solid session for the weekend warriors.
As we head into the first week of September, the swell runs hot and cold. There’s a massive spike on Friday, September 4th, with a 13 ft SSW swell and a combined energy of 6767. That’s far too big for this break – expert-only, and even then, the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be a washing machine. Stay out of the water that day.
In the second week, the calls are less certain, but a few morning sessions with 6 ft to 6 ft swell and clean cross-offshore winds might offer some fun, though nothing to get too excited about.
Overall, your best bets are Friday morning, August 21st and Tuesday morning, August 25th. Mark those on the calendar.
Rusty.
