Alright, surfers, ol’ Rusty here with a look at what’s cookin’ for Kleinemonde over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a serious run of swell headed our way, starting this Friday and rolling right through. It’s gonna be a wild ride, so strap in.
Right off the bat, Friday morning (3rd July) kicks things off with a solid 8ft swell out of the SSE. It's not for the faint of heart—this one’s packing some serious grunt, with wave energy up at (2860). The water’s a bit nippy too, clocking in at 66°, which is a touch colder than we’d usually expect for this time of year. But the wind is blowing offshore from the west at 12 mph, so the lineup will be clean and mean. This is big stuff, over 8ft, so it’s strictly for the experienced crew. By Friday afternoon, the swell pushes up to 10ft from the SE, with a gentle 3 mph offshore from the WSW. Glassy as a mirror, but it’s too big for the break. Still, if you’ve got the nerve, that’s a proper session.
Saturday (4th July) eases off just a touch. Morning brings 8ft from the SE with a west offshore at 9 mph, still clean and still only for the experts. The energy is still hefty at (1981). Saturday afternoon drops to 7ft from the SE, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. Clean waves, and the crowd factor is something to keep in mind—this spot can get a bit busy, but it’s worth the paddle when it’s this good.
Sunday (5th July) is where the holiday-chasers start to fade. The swell drops to 5ft from the SE in the morning, but the wind swings onshore from the NNE at 9 mph. It’ll be cross-shore and choppy, nothing to write home about. Afternoon gets worse, with 4ft and onshore breeze. Best to save your energy.
Monday (6th July) and Tuesday (7th July) bring in smaller, cleaner swells around the 4ft to 5ft range from the SW, with light offshore or cross-off winds. This is the sweet spot for the intermediates—still decent shape, still rideable, and the beach-and-point setup here handles a long-period swell (12 seconds) well. Not a standout, but a nice reset.
Now, the next real pulse hits Thursday 9th July. Morning sees 8ft from the SSW, with a light cross-off from the SSW at 6 mph. The energy is climbing again at (1949). That’s excellent for the experienced. But Thursday afternoon, it jumps to a thumping 10ft from the SSW with a 15-second period. That’s a very long-period groundswell, boys. The wind is light cross-on from the SSE, which will put a bit of texture on the face. This swell is too big for the break, but if you’re an expert, it could be the session of the month. Still, the long period might make it a bit straight at the beach, so stick to the point if you can.
The week after that? Well, it gets weirder. Friday 10th through Sunday 12th July is a mess. Strong onshore winds howling from the east and southeast, with swell holding around 7ft to 8ft. That’s just blown-out, ugly conditions. Kite surfers might love the wind and chop, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a hard pass. Monday 13th is no better—heavy rain and gale-force winds. Just stay home.
Things finally settle down Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th July, but the swell is tiny—2ft to 3ft. The wind goes offshore on Wednesday, but it’s a gale-force 28 mph, so paddling out is near impossible. Let it go.
Then the finale: Thursday 16th July through Saturday 18th July. We get a absolute monster of a swell. Thursday morning shows 12ft from the SW, with a strong offshore wind at 16 mph. That’s clean, powerful, and massive (energy at 3563). By Thursday afternoon, it hits 13ft from the SW. That’s just brutal. Friday and Saturday keep the swell over 10ft, with light winds but cross or onshore directions. This is big-wave territory only.
So, what’s the best on offer? For the experts, Thursday 9th July afternoon is a true standout—that 10ft SSW groundswell with very-long period and near-perfect winds is the king of the run. For the intermediates, Saturday 4th July afternoon is your golden window: 7ft from the SE, clean, and the crowd might be there but it’s worth it. Don’t blink, because these windows close fast.
This is Rusty, signing off. Stay safe out there.
