The Lowdown

Alright crew, Rusty here. We’ve got the full 16 days for Kleinemonde, a beach and point break that’s fairly consistent but needs the right conditions to fire. The water is 64°F — that’s 4°F colder than average for this time of year, so you’ll want a thick suit.

This Saturday morning (18 July) is rideable but not a standout. We’ve got a 4ft S swell at 12 seconds, clean under a light cross-off breeze, with moderate energy (723). It’s a decent start, but the real action kicks in on Monday morning (20 July). That’s our first serious highlight: a 7ft WSW swell with a short 9-second period, but the energy jumps to strong (1906) and the wind is light and clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers — the size is pushing into that zone where beginners might get chewed up, but for the rest of us, it’s going to be fun.

The swell builds through the week, but the wind gets feisty. Tuesday afternoon (21 July) has an onshore breeze, so skip it. Wednesday (22 July) stays clean with a cross-off, but the swell is a bit lumpy and messy. The real standout, and the best on offer in the whole 16-day window, lands on Thursday morning (23 July). A 10ft SSW swell at 12 seconds, with a 22 mph offshore wind — that’s fresh and clean. The energy is very strong (2529). However, this is a big wave day, strictly for experts. The break can handle it, but if you’re not solid, stay on the sand.

Then we get to Friday morning (24 July) — and this is the other true standout. An 12ft SSW swell, 16-second period, glassy conditions with a light NNW breeze. The combined energy is massive (5093). This is proper groundswell, very long period, so it’s going to jack up and hold its shape. At a point break, this is dreamy. But again, it’s too big for beginners, and the long period means long lulls between sets. For the experienced crew, this is the session to circle on the calendar.

Saturday morning (25 July) holds at 10ft with a 14-second period, clean and cross-off, but the energy is still very strong (3199). It’s still expert territory. Sunday (26 July) is a write-off with cross-onshore winds and poor surf, so skip it. Monday (27 July) brings a nice recovery: 6ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, glassy conditions in the afternoon — that’s excellent for experienced surfers, and the energy is strong (1318). This is a solid option for the second week.

The following days (28 July to 30 July) offer clean, rideable surf in the 5ft to 6ft range, but nothing earth-shattering. The wind stays favourable. The very end of the run, from 31 July into August, gets messy with strong to gale-force winds, smaller swell, and poor conditions. The morning of 1 August has a near gale offshore (31 mph) — that’s almost impossible to paddle into, so give it a miss.

Overall, the first week has the fire, with the 24th and 23rd being the absolute standouts if you’ve got the skills. The second week cleans up for a few days but don’t expect magic. Keep an eye on the wind shifts.

Rusty.
