Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what's cookin' at Cemetery.

Straight up, this is a patchy outlook. There's barely anything worth paddling out for in the first week, but there are a couple of moments in the second week that could make it worth keeping an eye on the horizon. The water's sitting at 58°, which is about a degree and a half colder than what we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you'll be wanting that 4/3 if you're heading out.

The forecast opens quiet. On Friday the 3rd, we've got small 4ft swell from the SW with a 10-second period, but it's a bit lumpy with that NNW cross-off. The wave energy is weak at 266, so don't expect much. Saturday the 4th morning drops right off to a tiny 2ft SE swell that's a write-off.

Sunday the 5th afternoon shows a little life. The swell picks up to a clean 2ft SW with a 13-second period, and we get a light NW breeze that turns it cross-off. The combined energy climbs to 206, still small but the conditions are there. This is that little window where it might be worth a quick paddle if you're desperate.

Now, Monday the 6th is where the energy really shows up. The morning has a 7ft SW swell, but that NE wind is cross-on and messy. The afternoon though... that's the standout of the first week. Clean 7ft SW swell at 12 seconds, with a light SSW cross-off breeze. The combined wave energy is pumping at 1329. This is solid, experienced surfers only territory – that size will be a handful for beginners. It's a proper groundswell, so expect decent shape and longer lulls between sets.

Tuesday the 7th holds onto some size at 6ft SW, but the wind swings SSE and turns cross to cross-on, putting a bit of a chop on the face. The energy is still solid, but the quality drops off.

We hit a bit of a dry spell after that until the 11th. Saturday the 11th is a real gem, but it's a full week and a half away. The morning is glassy with a 4ft SSW swell and a 12-second period. The energy is moderate at 486. It's small but clean, and those glassy conditions are a major positive. The afternoon gets even better, with a 3ft SSW swell and a light offshore breeze, giving you clean lines. It's worth marking on the calendar, but being that far out, treat it as promising but not locked in.

Coming into the second week, Sunday the 12th holds consistent 4ft to 5ft SSW swells with nice 12 to 14-second periods. Light offshore winds keep it clean and the energy sits around 700. There's a good run of surfable waves here.

But the real big boy arrives on Thursday the 16th. The morning has a massive 8ft SW swell with a 15-second period. That's a very long period groundswell and it's going to have some serious power – combined energy is a massive 2758. This is only for experts. The wind is a clean NNW cross-off, so the faces should be lined up nicely. Because it's such a long period, it might wall up a bit on a beach break like this, but if the banks are right, it'll be incredible. Afternoon holds the same 8ft size.

Friday the 17th drops back to a still sizeable 6ft SW, but the wind picks up to a moderate breeze. Still clean, but the magic is gone. The rest of the run fades out through the 18th into small, clean, but underwhelming conditions.

So, to wrap it up: if you're an experienced surfer, mark Monday the 6th afternoon for the first real punch of swell. For the long-range punt, Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th look like clean, fun smaller days. And if you're an expert and hungry for power, Thursday the 16th is the one to watch – just keep an eye on the forecasts as it gets closer.

Rusty.

Information about the Cemetery Surf forecast

The above surf forecast table for Cemetery provides essential information for determining whether the surfing conditions will be good over the next 16 days. A general guide to surfing at Cemetery can be found by selecting the local surf guide option on the grey menu. Our Cemetery surf forecast is unique since it includes wave energy (power) that defines the real feel of the surf rather than just the height or the period. If you surf the same spot (Cemetery) regularly then make a mental note of the wave energy from the surf forecast table each time you go. Very soon you may start to choose your surf days based on the wave energy alone combined with our forecast of favourable offshore wind conditions. Our star ratings will help here and of course you will also find the usual wave height and period predictions on our surf forecasts as well as a full break down of the swell components under our advanced users option (to reveal that, click the little Einstein character under the tide times).

Further information to help with frequently asked questions about our surf forecast for Cemetery may be found under the help tab on the top menu and also by moving your mouse over the question marks on the surf forecast table itself. Please always bear in mind that the forecast is for near-shore open water and local factors at each surf break influence the actual breaking wave height, such as the beach / reef profile, water depths offshore and shelter.
