The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Umina Beach over the next couple of weeks.

First off, the next few days are pretty flat and uninspiring. We’ve got a solid gap of poor to ordinary surf from now right through to the end of the first week. Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th are a write-off with tiny 1ft slop and no real energy – the combined swell energy is sitting at a weak 40 to 42. Thursday the 6th and Friday the 7th are slightly better with 2ft to 3ft swell, but the energy is still low to moderate (72 to 114) and the conditions are only “surfable” at best. Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th stay in that same marginal zone with 2ft, still nothing to get excited about. Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th see a bit more push with 3ft to 3ft from the ENE, but the combined energy (137 to 103) is still moderate and the winds are cross-off, so it’s clean but weak. Wednesday the 12th drops back to 2ft with fresh cross-shore winds – not worth paddling out for.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Thursday the 13th of August is the standout in this whole outlook. The swell jumps to a solid 12ft from the south with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 2806 – that’s strong wave energy. The winds are cross-off from the southwest in the morning, then cross-on from the south in the afternoon. I’ve gotta be straight with you – this is a big swell, well over 8ft, so it’s only for experienced surfers. Beginners should stay well clear. The long period means proper groundswell, and Umina Beach is a beach break, so it might close out a bit, but if you’re an expert, this is the session to aim for. The water temperature is 64°, which is about average for this time of year, just 0.7° cooler than normal, so nothing unusual there.

After that, Friday the 14th sees the swell drop to 10ft from the SSE, still big but with combined energy at 1258, and cross-shore winds from the southwest in the morning. Conditions are marginal, but if you’re keen and experienced, it’s worth a look. Saturday the 15th drops further to 6ft, and by Sunday the 16th it’s 5ft from the SE, but the winds turn cross-on and choppy, so not great. The second week from the 17th onwards sees the swell settle to 3ft to 6ft, but with periods up to 12 seconds, the energy is moderate (432 to 554) and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s messy. Late in the period, on the 19th, it’s 4ft from the ESE with onshore wind – poor.

So, the bottom line: the best on offer is Thursday the 13th of August, with 12ft south swell, clean morning cross-off wind, and massive energy. It’s a big, powerful day for experts only. If you’re not up for that, the rest of the outlook is mostly marginal or just plain poor. Keep an eye on the long-range, but for now, that Thursday is the one to circle.

Rusty.
