The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at North Haven.
First thing you need to know: the water temp is sitting at 67°, which is bang on average for this time of year. Nothing weird going on there.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, honestly. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th have some swell around but the wind is a messy cross-off with rain showers, and the wave energy is just moderate (324). You’re looking at 6ft to 8ft of short-period, 7 to 8 second windswell from the SE and ESE. It’s not clean enough to get excited about.
Then Sunday the 19th is where it gets interesting, but only for the right crew. The swell jumps up to 10ft from the E with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1994). The wind is cross-off, so the waves will be clean. But here’s the thing – at 10ft, this is expert-only territory. Beginners, stay on the sand. This is a big, powerful swell and it’s going to be a handful.
Monday the 20th morning is the standout. The swell drops to a still-chunky 7ft from the E, period holds at 10 seconds, and the wind goes light from the S at 6 mph. The energy is still strong (1154). The comment says excellent for experienced surfers, and I agree. That’s the best window in the whole run. The wind is light and cross-off, which will keep the face clean. Crowds are possible here, so get there early.
After that, it tapers off. Tuesday the 21st has a glassy morning with 5ft from the ENE, but the energy drops to moderate (663). Wednesday the 22nd is small with 3ft and glassy conditions – a good longboard morning. By Thursday the 23rd, we’re down to 3ft, and the energy is weak (134). The following week is all small, weak swell with poor conditions. There’s a long gap from the 24th all the way through to the end of July with nothing worth paddling out for. The odd 1.0ft to 2ft swell with a very long period (19 seconds on the 25th) is all show and no go – too small and straight for a beach break like this.
A couple of long-range whispers on the 1st of August show a 4ft S swell, but the wind is onshore from the NE, so don’t hold your breath.
So, bottom line: Monday the 20th morning is your best shot. Get on it. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
