The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and let’s talk about North Haven. I’m not gonna lie to ya – this stretch of the next 16 days is a real mixed bag. We’ve got a lot of flat, choppy, and just plain messy conditions to wade through before we finally see a pulse of proper swell. The water temp is sitting right around 67° – that’s bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real chance to get wet that even looks half decent won’t come until Saturday the 22nd in the morning. It’s small, just 3 ft of swell from the NE with a short period, but the wind is offshore from the WSW at 10 km/h, and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” The combined energy is a weak 44. It’s not going to be a day to tell your mates about. Sunday morning, the 23rd, is similar – a little 2 ft ENE groundswell with a 9-second period, light offshore from the SW, and combined energy of 104. Again, very ordinary but clean.

Then we hit a proper dry spell. From Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s mostly cross-onshore junk, tiny surf, or a jump in size to 7 ft on Tuesday the 25th afternoon but with a short period and messy onshore wind. That’s not going to be your day.

Things start to turn around on Thursday the 27th. The morning sees a clean 3 ft SSW swell with a moderate offshore wind from the SW at 20 km/h, and combined energy of 209. The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the first real green light. The water temp is still around average. Friday the 28th morning could be a standout – glassy conditions with NE wind at just 5 km/h, a 4 ft S groundswell with a 11-second period, and combined energy of 414. That’s a proper little window of clean, fun surf. It’s a beach breakwater setup, so that longer period groundswell might make it a little straight, but with glassy wind, it’s still worth a look.

After that, it’s back to onshore dribble for a few days until we hit the end of the month and into September. Sunday the 30th has some bumpy 5 ft to 4 ft swells, but nothing special. Then Monday the 31st of August sees a big jump in size – 8 ft S swell early, but the wind is onshore. The afternoon hits 10 ft from the S with a 13-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 3483. The wave comment says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That’s expert territory only, and honestly, with that much size and onshore wind, this is more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session. Tuesday the 1st of September is even bigger – 13 ft S swell in the morning, combined energy 5486, and again the comment says it’s too big for this break. Wednesday the 2nd sees 12 ft SSE swell – still too big. Thursday the 3rd drops back to 8 ft SSE, which is still big and onshore, but a marginal possibility.

If I had to pick one or two true standouts, it’s the Thursday the 27th of August morning with clean offshore conditions and a solid 3 ft swell, and especially the Friday the 28th of August morning – glassy, 4 ft of groundswell, good energy. That’s your best bet in this whole 16-day window. The rest is either flat, messy, or too big for this break.

Rusty.
