Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for North Haven. This forecast is a real rollercoaster – and it’s all about how much size you’re willing to take on. The pattern is dominated by these big pulses of swell that are gonna lock the break down for anyone but the elite, then a long stretch of weak dribble. Let’s walk through it.
We start Sunday the 5th of July with a 12ft south swell rolling in from the S, 12-second period, massive energy behind it at 2948. The wind is a cross-off from the S at 16 mph, so it’ll stay pretty clean. Water temp is 67°, about average for this time. But the word is out: this is too big for the break. At 12ft, this is expert territory only, and even then it’s a big commitment. That same story runs through Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th. Tuesday morning gives us a light offshore from the SSW at 12 mph – a big plus for clean waves – with 12ft of SSE swell, energy at 3383. Long, powerful sets, but too big.
Wednesday the 8th of July sees a slight drop. Morning still has 10ft of swell with a light offshore, clean as, but still flagged as too big. By Wednesday afternoon it’s 7ft with a cross-off, and the quality scores fall right off. Thursday the 9th is where we get a real window. Morning sees 7ft of S swell with a cross-off wind at 9 mph, energy down to 1091. The comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” At 7ft, that’s a proper solid wave for strong surfers. The afternoon is similar at 7ft from the SE. This is the sweet spot.
Friday the 10th of July keeps it going. Morning: 7ft of SSE swell with a light offshore from the SW at 6 mph – clean, calling. Energy is 834. The afternoon holds at 7ft with a 11-second period, cross-off wind. For the experienced crowd, Thursday morning through Friday is your standout: solid, clean, powerful, without being outright dangerous.
Then things drop. Saturday the 11th of July sees the swell fall to 5ft with glassy conditions from the WNW at 3 mph in the morning. Clean, but the period drops to 9 seconds, weaker, less organised. Energy is 416. Surfable, but not a standout. From Sunday the 12th onward, it gets small and ordinary for days. There’s a real gap of poor surf from Sunday the 12th right through to around Thursday the 16th of July. Waves drop below 3ft, periods get short, energy falls into weak territory. Flat.
But late in the window, the big stuff returns. Thursday the 16th of July: 12ft of S swell, 11-second period, moderate offshore wind, energy 2562. Too big again. This repeats Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th of July. Saturday morning the 18th is a real tease: 10ft of SSE swell with a 13-second period (groundswell), glassy conditions from the NW at 3 mph. Energy 3214. That would be unreal on a reef, but at North Haven – a beach and breakwater setup – it’s just going to close out and be dangerous for all but the absolute top-tier charger.
For the beginner, there’s nothing in this whole 16-day window worth paddling out for – it’s either too big or too small. For the expert, lock in Thursday the 9th through Friday the 10th of July. That’s your clean, solid, manageable window. The glassy Saturday the 18th is a promise of something incredible, but you’d need to know the break intimately to even think about it at that size.
The consistent energy coming through means it won’t stay flat for long, but the size is the boss here. Pick your moment, know your limits, and if you’re not charging double-overhead, sit it out.
Rusty.
