The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on the cards for North Haven.
The forecast window gets going Wednesday morning, July 15, with a modest south swell at 6 feet and a short period of 7 seconds. The wind is offshore from the southwest at 12 mph, which will keep things pretty clean for a beginner-friendly spot like this. The water temp is 67°, pretty much average for this time of year. There’s moderate wave energy churning through at 298. It’s not a standout, but a reasonable session for learning or a cruise.
Things get a bit bigger over the next few days, but the winds go cross-offshore, and the quality dips into marginal territory. The swell stays mostly around 6–8 feet, with period ticking up a little. Thursday and Friday will have rideable waves, but nothing to get overly excited about.
The first real alert comes on Sunday, July 19. The swell jumps to 10 feet from the east, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a whole lot of energy piling in – wave energy hits 1979 on the morning and 1721 in the afternoon. Thing is, for North Haven, this is getting too big, especially for a beginner spot. The winds are cross and cross-off, so clean enough, but the size will shut down a lot of the fun for most. Unless you’re an expert, this one is a pass.
Monday, July 20, eases slightly to 8 feet from the east, still with a 10-second period. The afternoon shapes up nicely: wind goes light from the SSE at 3 mph, almost glassy, making for clean conditions. Wave energy is still strong at 1111, but the size and long period mean this is better suited to experienced surfers who can handle a fuller face.
Tuesday, July 21, morning is a real treat for North Haven. Swell drops to 6 feet from the east, 10-second period, and the wind goes glassy from the north – dead calm. Wave energy sits at 815. This is the pick of the first week. Clean, punchy, and the crowd might be around sometimes, but in those conditions it’s well worth it.
The glassy mornings keep rolling into Wednesday, July 22. Swell at 5 feet from the east, same 10-second period, wind from the NNW at 3 mph. Another clean session for those who can get out.
Now, mark your calendar for Thursday, July 23. Morning brings a 7-foot east swell with a long period of 12 seconds. Wind is light offshore from the WSW at 3 mph. Wave energy is 1193. This is the standout of the whole outlook. That long period groundswell will wrap in with power, and with glassy-to-clean conditions in the afternoon, it’s exceptional for experienced surfers. The long period means the sets will be bigger and more defined, and at a beach/breakwater setup like North Haven, those long gaps between sets will make paddling out a bit easier.
Friday, July 24, still good with a 6-foot east swell, 11-second period, and offshore wind in the morning at 6 mph from the SW. Clean and solid.
From Saturday, July 25, through to the end of the window, the swell gradually fades. It drops to 5 feet then 4 feet by Sunday, and stays small through to Thursday, July 30. The last few days will see waves around 3 to 4 feet – surfable but ordinary. Glassy mornings will pop up now and then, like on Monday, July 27, with a light offshore, but the energy is low at 352.
Best on offer: Get on Thursday, July 23, for the best quality. Tuesday, July 21 morning, and Wednesday, July 22 morning, are the next best bets for clean, fun waves.
Rusty.
