The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s going on around Forster Beach (Nambucca). This is a fairly consistent beginner-friendly exposed beach break, so it’s a spot that can handle a bit of swell. The water temp is sitting at 68°F which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing weird there.
The first decent surf window isn’t until the coming weekend, so we’ve got a bit of a wait. Nothing worth paddling out for on Thursday the 16th or Friday the 17th – the swell is there but the wind is messy and the quality just isn’t there. It’s a bit of a no-go.
Saturday the 18th is where things get interesting, but it’s a classic case of too much of a good thing. We’re looking at a solid 10ft swell from the SE and ESE, with moderate to fresh cross-off winds. The wave energy is pumping hard (1172 to 1939), but honestly, for a beach break, that’s going to be a washing machine. Unless you’re an expert on a proper board, this is a stay-on-the-beach day. Sunday the 19th is the same story – still big, still messy for the average punter.
Now, Monday the 20th is a sweet spot. Swell drops to a much more manageable 7ft from the east, period around 10 seconds, and the wind swings light from the SSW. That’s clean, cross-off, and the energy is still moderate (1048). For an experienced surfer, this is the best of the first week. The water is clean, the waves have shape, and it’s not a total zoo.
Tuesday the 21st is a gem for the early crew. Glassy conditions in the morning, light wind from the SW, and a 6ft east swell. That’s a lovely clean wave, plenty of fun for a mid-range board. The energy is still decent (624). Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
After that, it tails off quickly. Wednesday the 22nd is glassy but small at 4ft, and by Thursday the 23rd we’re down to 3ft and ordinary. The end of the first week and into the second week is pretty flat or weak, with a lot of poor surf conditions. There’s a big gap of several days where it’s basically not worth it.
Hang in there, because the last few days of the month show a bit of a pulse. Wednesday the 30th has a clean 6ft from the south, and Thursday the 30th afternoon looks even better with a 6ft SSE swell and offshore wind from the SW. That’s a proper clean session, energy at 615. For the second week, that’s your standout. And then Friday the 31st is a bit of a let-down with stronger wind again.
So, to sum it up – the best of the lot is Monday the 20th for the experienced surfers, with that clean 7ft east swell. For the glassy, small-wave hunter, Tuesday the 21st morning is gold. And for the long-range call, keep an eye on Thursday the 30th afternoon – that’s a promising one, but we’ll see how it holds.
