The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's break down what's coming up for Forster Beach (Nambucca) over the next couple of weeks.
We've got a solid run of surf kicking off this Sunday, the 19th of July, with a big 10-foot easterly swell rolling in at a 10-second period. The combined energy is a strong 2386, so there's a heap of power in the water. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. The wind is a fresh 19 mph southerly, cross-off, so it'll be clean, but this swell is way too big for this spot. It's a beginner-friendly break, so 10-foot is well over the top – this is for very experienced surfers only, if anyone. The afternoon stays the same, big and clean but too large.
Monday the 20th drops a little to 8 feet, still from the east with a 10-second period, and the energy is still strong at 1728. The morning wind is a light 6 mph southerly cross-off, so it's clean, but again, 8 feet is pushing it for a beginner break. This is expert territory. The afternoon turns a bit messy with a 9 mph SSE cross-wind and some chop.
Tuesday the 21st is where things get interesting. The swell drops to 6 feet from the east, 10-second period, with a moderate energy of 731. The morning is an absolute standout: glassy conditions with a 3 mph southwesterly, dead calm. It's clean as a whistle. The waves are still a bit punchy for a beginner, but for an intermediate surfer, this is a great session. The afternoon goes to a 5-foot easterly swell with a 3 mph easterly onshore wind, which kills the vibe.
Wednesday the 22nd sees the swell ease to 4 feet from the ENE, 9 seconds, and energy down to 283. The morning is glassy again with a light 3 mph NNW breeze. This is a nice, mellow session for all levels. The afternoon gets a bit sloppy with a 9 mph cross-onshore wind from the NE.
From Thursday the 23rd through to the end of the month, the surf stays small, mostly under 3 feet to 4 feet, with modest energy. The best of this run is Saturday the 25th morning – a 4-foot southerly swell, 10-second period, with a light 6 mph SW cross-off wind, making for clean little waves. Sunday the 26th morning is also decent with a 4-foot southerly, 13-second long-period swell, and a light SSW cross-off, giving it some nice shape and energy at 611. Keep in mind that longer period southerly swells can be a bit straight at a beach break like this, but it'll still be fun.
The real standout, if you're after a bit more size, is the morning of Tuesday the 21st of July – that glassy, 6-foot east swell is the pick of the early week. And for a cleaner, longer-period option, the morning of Sunday the 26th of July with that 4-foot southerly groundswell and glassy cross-off is a beauty.
There's a noticeable gap in quality from the 28th of July onwards, with a few days of tiny, weak surf. The 29th and 30th are mostly below 2 feet with low energy, barely surfable. Then we get a little bump on the 31st of July, with a 3-foot southerly, 8-second swell and a moderate offshore westerly wind, which will be clean but small. The 1st of August morning brings a 5-foot southerly, 14-second very long period groundswell, with a moderate 12 mph SW cross-off wind. That's a lot of period and energy (903) for a beach break, so it might be a bit fat and straight, but if you're an experienced surfer after a clean, powerful wave, it's worth a look. The 2nd of August morning is glassy with a 4-foot southerly, a nice clean option.
Overall, the first week has the best combination of size and conditions. The second week is more about small, clean windows for a longboard or a fun little grovel.
Rusty.
