Righto, grab a coffee and settle in. Rusty here, and I’ve been lookin’ hard at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks around here.
Alright, so the outlook is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a nice little pulse of swell on the way, but it’s gonna take a few days before the real fun starts. There’s a definite gap at the start, so don’t bother paddling out just yet. The first real shot of anything half decent kicks off on Saturday, July 4th, but even that’s a tease.
Saturday 4th July starts off with a clean, glassy look at Forster Beach (Nambucca). That early morning session will see a light 4ft swell from the south, with a period of 8 seconds. Combined swell energy is weak at 224. It’s gonna be glassy with a slight air, which is beautiful for a beginner-friendly wave. The wind is light from the SSW at 3 mph. This is the best of the weekend, but it’s small. The afternoon goes to junk with a cross-on wind, so be on it early.
Sunday 5th is a write-off. The swell gets a little bumpy and the wind gets messy. Not your day.
Now, from Monday 6th things get sizing up, but it’s gonna be big. That swell jumps to 10ft from the SSE on Monday morning (period 10 seconds) and combined energy is pumping at 1448, but that’s way oversize for a beginner spot like Forster Beach. It’s one for the experts only, and even then, with a cross-off wind, it’ll be a wild, big-wave challenge with a strong moderate breeze. Tuesday 7th is more of the same, even more energy, hitting 3118, but the swell is 10ft again. It’s big enough to be intimidating for anyone but the most experienced.
The real standout period starts to shape up on Wednesday 8th July. The stars align briefly. We get a solid 8ft swell from the SE with an 11-second period, and the wind swings offshore from the SW at 9 mph. That’s glassy offshore conditions for the morning, and the forecast says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. The combined energy is 1730, which means proper waves. Forster Beach is exposed to the swell, so it’ll be handling that size with some grunt. This is your first big highlight – if you’ve got the experience, it’s worth a look.
The quality holds into Thursday 9th but the wind gets a bit more cross-off. Still surfable, but not as clean as Wednesday.
Then we get another lovely window on Friday 10th July. Morning again brings a solid 8ft SSE swell (period 11 seconds) with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. Combined energy is 1299, and the forecast is calling it excellent for experienced surfers. This is a great morning session for those who know what they’re doing.
Saturday 11th July morning is another one to circle. The swell drops a little to 6ft from the south, period 10 seconds, but the wind is clean offshore from the SW at 6 mph. It’s excellent for experienced surfers. A nice, slightly less daunting size with good shape. The afternoon turns onshore, so hit the dawn patrol.
After this, the swell backs off significantly. Sunday 12th morning is tiny – 3ft from the ESE – but with glassy conditions. It’s a fun one for beginners, but not the standout.
The rest of the week from Monday 13th July onwards is pretty ordinary. Swell drops right off to 2ft. The water is about average for the time of year. There’s a slight blip on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th, with 4ft to 5ft swell and decent conditions, but nothing to write home about. The energy is weak to moderate (between 316 and 564) and the periods are short. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The run continues through to the weekend (19th July) with small, short-period swell and cross-off winds. Just small, everyday waves.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is Wednesday morning, July 8th and Friday morning, July 10th for experienced surfers looking for size and clean offshore conditions. For the beginners, the Saturday 4th July morning glass-off or the Sunday 12th July glassy small stuff are your windows. The rest is a wait-and-see game.
Rusty.
