The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking at the Nambucca charts. The first few days are a bit of a write-off with messy winds and poor surf. The first real chance of a decent wave is on Thursday the 16th, but it’s still marginal. The big highlight is a solid groundswell arriving on Thursday the 23rd of July.
Forster Beach (Nambucca) is a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent but exposed. Wednesday 15th has a 4ft swell from the S with a short 7-second period, but the 20 km/h SSW wind is cross-off, making it rough. The wave energy is weak (127). Thursday 16th sees a bigger 8ft SSE swell (8 seconds) in the morning, but with the same cross-off wind and marginal conditions. Energy is building (696). Friday 17th is similar, with 6ft and cross-off, turning into a cross-shore chop in the afternoon. Saturday 18th offers a 7ft ESE swell (9 seconds) and moderate energy (971), but rain and cross-off wind keep it marginal.
Sunday 19th is a big one – 10ft ESE swell with a 10-second period and massive energy (2507). The file says it’s too big for this break – only for experts, and the fresh 30 km/h cross-shore wind makes it lumpy. This is more of a kite-surfing setup.
After that, the swell drops but the wind improves. Monday 20th has an 8ft swell (10 seconds) with light cross-shore winds. Tuesday 21st morning is the first real gem: a 7ft E swell (10 seconds) with glassy conditions – a slight air, 5 km/h WSW wind. Energy is moderate (848). Wednesday 22nd morning is also glassy, with a 6ft E swell (10 seconds) and calm wind. Nice and clean.
The standout is Thursday 23rd of July. Forster Beach gets a solid 8ft E groundswell with a very long 12-second period. The combined energy is strong (1476). The morning wind is a light 5 km/h SSW cross-off, keeping it clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers – the longer period means better shaped waves and longer lulls. The water temp is about 68°, which is normal for this time of year. Friday 24th morning is also good, with a 6ft E swell (11 seconds) and clean cross-off wind.
From Saturday 25th through to the end of the month, the swell drops. We’re looking at 3ft to 5ft E swells, with periods around 10 seconds. The wind is often glassy in the mornings, like Sunday 26th, Monday 27th, Tuesday 28th, and Wednesday 29th – all with calm or light offshore winds. The energy is weak (250-400 range). These are small, clean waves, good for a beginner to have a quiet, uncrowded paddle. The morning of Thursday 30th is the smallest, with a 3ft swell and only 122 energy. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
So, the best bet is the Thursday 23rd morning for the bigger, cleaner groundswell. The Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd mornings are also standouts for clean, fun waves. The rest of the time, it’s small and marginal, with some glassy windows for a quiet session.
Rusty.
