The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. Look, if you were hoping for a solid run of waves, you might want to sit this one out for a bit. We’ve got a long, drawn-out patch of small and messy conditions ahead for Forster Beach (Nambucca). Most of the next week is going to be below average, with the only real highlights being a few clean windows and one standout day that’s worth circling on the calendar.
The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is spot on for this time of year, so no worries there. But the energy in the water is mostly weak. Early on, Thursday afternoon is a write-off – just 3ft of short-period junk from the ENE with a moderate cross-onshore breeze making it choppy. The combined energy is weak too, at only 180. Friday morning will be glassy with light airs, but the surf is ordinary at 3ft and period 6 seconds. Not worth getting wet for, honestly. Friday arvo goes downhill again with the wind swinging NE.
Saturday starts glassy again but the swell drops to 2ft. The wind is offshore (W), but it’s just too small to do anything with. Sunday morning is clean with a light cross-off breeze, but again, we’re talking 2ft. The period bumps up to 9 seconds on Monday morning, and the energy picks up to a moderate 196, but the height is still only 2ft, and it’s glassy. It’s surfable, but it’s not going to get the heart rate up.
Tuesday arvo is where things get spicy, but not in a good way for paddling. A fresh NNE breeze at 19 mph whips up 5ft of lumpy, short-period slop. That’s more kite-surfing territory than surfboard territory, if you ask me.
Then, we finally get the standout. Wednesday the 26th, in the afternoon: the wind swings offshore from the WSW at 16 mph, and it’s clean. The swell jumps to 7ft from the south with an 8-second period. The combined energy hits a strong 642. That’s a proper pulse of energy. The wind is offshore and moderate, which will keep it reasonably clean. It’s a great window, but it’s a bit on the bigger side – over 5ft – so it’s not for the beginners. This is the one day you’ll want to be free. Thursday the 27th morning after that still has some push – 5ft from the SSE with glassy conditions, and energy at 318. That’s a decent follow-up session.
After that, it drops back into the doldrums. Friday the 28th through to the end of the window is mostly small and onshore, with the exception of Sunday the 30th morning which is clean but only 4ft, and Monday the 31st which has a long-period groundswell from the SSE at 14 seconds, but only 2ft. That long period at a beach break might make it break pretty straight anyway. The outlook for the second week is pretty forgettable – a few glassy mornings but tiny waves and not much energy. There’s one decent-looking clean window on Tuesday the 1st of September morning with 4ft and a light glassy wind, but other than that, you’re chasing shadows.
So, the long and short of it: Wednesday the 26th afternoon is the standout. Get on it. Thursday morning is your backup. The rest is a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but this stretch looks like it’s testing our patience.
Rusty.
