The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Little Gibber - Dark Point.
Right off the bat, the next few days are a write-off. We’ve got poor surf conditions through Tuesday and Wednesday, with cross-off and cross-on winds messing things up. The swell is small and weak, with combined energy readings around 28 to 23, so nothing doing. Don’t even bother paddling out.
Things start to get a bit of size on Wednesday the 15th, but the wind is cross-on and the surf is poor. On Wednesday morning we’re looking at 6ft S swell with a period of 8 seconds, but the energy is moderate at 453 and the wind is ruining it. By Wednesday afternoon, the swell jumps to 10ft from the S, with a period of 10 seconds and energy at 1568 – that’s strong energy, but it’s coming in with a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and only for experts. The whole week stays pretty average with onshore winds and choppy conditions.
The first real standout appears on Tuesday the 21st in the morning. A glassy offshore wind from the W at 3 mph, with a 5ft E swell and a period of 10 seconds. The energy is moderate at 505, but the clean conditions will make it feel much better. The water temperature is 66°F, which is about normal for the time of year. This is a nice window for a beginner-friendly sandbar wave, but keep in mind that crowds are sometimes a thing here.
The next highlight comes on Friday the 24th in the morning. Clean conditions with a cross-off wind from the W at 6 mph, and a 6ft E swell with a long period of 12 seconds. The combined energy is strong at 1013. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, with longer-period groundswell that will set up nicely – though with that long period, it might be a bit straight at the sandbar, so keep your eyes open.
Saturday the 25th afternoon is also worth a mention. Clean conditions with a cross-off WNW breeze at 9 mph, and a 5ft E swell, period 12 seconds, energy 989. The surf is very good, but not quite the standout of Friday morning.
Monday the 27th is a gem. In the morning, offshore wind from the NNW at 6 mph, 5ft E swell, period 11 seconds, energy 602. Then in the afternoon, it goes glassy calm with a 5ft E swell, same period, and energy 535. Both sessions are very good, clean, and the crowd factor might be a little lower than the weekend.
The last week of the outlook from the 28th onwards fades. The swell drops, the winds pick up, and we’re back to poor and marginal conditions. Not much to get excited about there.
So, to wrap it up: the best on offer is the Friday the 24th morning session, with excellent surf for experienced surfers – clean, strong energy, and long period E swell. The Monday the 27th is a close second with glassy conditions and a more manageable size for all levels. The rest is a mixed bag of onshore junk and fading swell.
Rusty.
