Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let's get into it. Gotta be straight up with you – the next week and a half at Fly Roads is looking pretty grim for the most part, but there’s a little window of hope if you’re patient.
Right from the get-go, we’re staring down the barrel of some real ugly conditions. Monday the 6th through to Wednesday the 8th of July, we’ve got a solid 10ft to 12ft of SSE/SE swell rolling in, but it’s getting absolutely hammered by a fresh cross-onshore wind. The wave energy is through the roof – but it’s all for nothing. It’s just a blown-out, lumpy mess. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Thursday morning the 9th of July is your standout. The wind drops right off to glassy – dead calm – and we’ve still got a decent 7ft of SE groundswell rolling in with a 10-second period. The combined energy is solid, and the forecast is calling for very good surf conditions. This is your moment. The wind is light from the west, making it glassy, so that SSE swell will be peeling clean as a whistle. Best surf on offer by a long shot.
Thursday afternoon and Friday the 10th see that swell dip to 6ft, and the wind goes light cross-shore, so it’s still surfable – just not as epic as that Thursday morning session. The conditions are marginal but you could get a few.
By Saturday the 11th, the swell drops further to 4ft, and the wind goes cross-offshore from the NW arvo, cleaning it up. It’s small but might offer a few fun ones for a longboard.
After that, things go quiet. Sunday the 12th through to Tuesday the 14th, the swell fades right out – we’re talking 1ft to 4ft of weak, short-period junk. Not much happening.
Then Wednesday the 15th of July, a big S/SSW swell kicks back in – 8ft to 12ft – but the wind is howling onshore or cross-onshore again at 15-20 mph. Massive energy numbers, but the wind will ruin it. That’s expert-only territory if you’re desperate, and even then it’s a messy battle.
The rest of the run into the third week is similar: plenty of swell, but the wind stays strong and onshore, locking it out for a clean ride. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have a chance of being okay if the wind lays down, but don’t hold your breath.
For the beginners among you: the only time the swell is small enough and clean enough is that Thursday morning the 9th at 7ft – even then, that’s top end of your comfort zone.
So, bottom line: the clear standout is Thursday morning, July 9th. Glassy conditions, solid 7ft SE groundswell. Get on it. The rest of the 16-day window is mostly a write-off unless you love getting thrashed in onshore slop.
Rusty.
