The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about what’s cooking at Fly Roads.

First off, the water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no need to start digging for the thick wetsuit just yet.

Honestly, the next few days are a write-off. We’ve got a solid 7ft to 10ft Southerly swell coming in on Wednesday the 15th, but the wind is howling on it from the SSW at 22 mph, and the rain is hammering down. The ocean is just a mess of chop and poor conditions. The combined energy is moderate to strong (496 to 1765), but it’s all for nothing with that wind. Don’t even think about it.

Thursday the 16th isn’t much better. The swell drops to 5ft to 6ft, but it’s crossed-up with a short, weak period of 8 seconds. The energy is moderate (349-375), but the conditions are marginal. You’d be fighting a cross-shore wind the whole time. Not worth paddling out.

Friday and Saturday the 17th and 18th keep the same story: small, weak swell (3ft to 7ft), short period, and the wind is swinging cross-on from the SE and SSE, making it lumpy and choppy. It’s a poor surf situation all around.

We finally get a flicker of hope on Sunday the 19th. The swell is building to a solid 8ft to 8ft from the East, and the period has stretched to 10 seconds, giving it a bit more grunt (energy moderate to strong at 1273-1610). But Sunday morning is still blown out by a cross-on breeze. The afternoon on Sunday the 19th cleans up a little, going cross-shore, and the score picks up. It’s going to be a big, powerful wave, but that 8ft is pushing into expert territory, and with the wind still moderate, it won’t be perfect.

The standout of the whole forecast comes on Monday the 20th. The afternoon session is the one to circle. The swell is a solid 6ft from the East, still with a nice 10-second period, giving it good energy (890). The wind is going light and cross-offshore from the ESE. That means clean, lined-up waves. Expect very good surf conditions. This is your best bet for the whole 16 days.

After that, the surf drops off a cliff. Tuesday the 21st through Friday the 24th of July sees tiny, weak swell (0.3ft to 3ft), mostly from the South, with flat spells. The energy drops to almost nothing (4 to 65). It’s a dead period.

Then, a second surprise pops up. Friday the 24th of July in the afternoon, a new pulse of 7ft swell from the SSE shows up. The period is back to 8 seconds, so it’s a bit short, but the wind is a light cross-offshore breeze from the East. That’s clean conditions again, and the energy jumps to 537. This is another session to keep an eye on as a promising late option.

The following Saturday morning the 25th is glassy with a 5ft SSE swell, but it’s a short period again. It’s surfable and clean, but not as punchy as the 20th.

The last few days of the month from the 26th to the 30th are a mix of small, weak swell and onshore winds. There’s nothing to get excited about. The waves are just too small and the wind is wrong.

Best Bet: Monday the 20th of July, afternoon session. 6ft East swell, light cross-offshore ESE wind. Clean and fun. The afternoon of Friday the 24th is a promising second option. The rest of the time, you’re better off going for a run or fixing your ding.

Rusty.
