The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s happening at Fly Roads.
Right now, the surf is poor. Sunday morning (August 23rd) has a small 4 ft south swell at 11 seconds, but with a cross wind it’s messy. The combined energy is 431, so there’s some moderate push, but the wind kills it. You won’t want to paddle out.
Monday morning (August 24th) shapes up better. The swell drops to 3 ft south, but the wind swings offshore from the NNE at 12 mph. That’ll clean things up nicely. The energy drops to 251, so it’s only moderate, but it’s rideable and tidy. Monday afternoon sees the wind turn cross-off and the swell fading—still rideable but smaller.
Tuesday (August 25th) stays small with 2 ft to 2 ft south, offshore winds in the morning. Only 99 to 93 in combined energy. Weak, but if you’re on a longboard it might bring a smile.
Wednesday (August 26th) turns poor—cross-on winds and a windy, lumpy mess. By Thursday morning (August 27th) the swell bumps to 5 ft south at a short 8 seconds, generating 317 in combined energy. But it’s cross-on and the period is short; it’ll be a bumpy, disorganised affair. Not worth the paddle.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Friday morning, August 28th. This is the standout in the whole outlook. Glassy conditions—wind from the WNW at just 3 mph—with a 4 ft south swell running at a nice 10 seconds. Combined energy hits 314. Clean faces, lined-up sets. That’s the session to aim for. Friday afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze.
Saturday August 29th goes downhill again—onshore winds, rain showers. The rest of the run looks poor or very ordinary through the first days of September.
But hold on. Tuesday morning, September 1st. That’s a week and a bit out, but worth noting. We’ve got a clear morning, light cross-off breeze, and a 4 ft south swell with a solid 15-second period. The combined energy reads 608—that’s strong groundswell energy. Long-period south swell like that will wrap in nicely but might wall up and close out on a beach break, so pick your spot. It looks promising for a point or reef setup, but for an exposed rookie stop it’s a bit tricky. Still, that Tuesday morning looks like the best of the second week.
Fly Roads is a very consistent beginner spot. Normally exposed to south swell. The water temperature is 64°, nearly 2° cooler than average for this time of year—a bit chilly, but not shocking.
After that Tuesday, it fades into tiny surf again through the 6th and 7th of September. A couple of barely rideable mornings but nothing special.
Overall: Friday morning August 28th is your best bet—glassy, clean, moderate waves. Then keep an eye on Tuesday September 1st for a bigger, longer-period south swell, but expect a bit more power and longer lulls.
Stay keen and keep an eye on the sky.
