The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s talk about Leggy Point. It’s a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent and can be a bit of a tease. We’ve got a long 16-day window ahead, but it’s a slow starter. There’s a real dry spell from Wednesday the 19th all the way through to the end of the month, with only a few scraps of energy and lousy winds. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year—nothing crazy, but you’ll feel it.
The first real standout doesn’t roll in until Wednesday the 26th of August, during the afternoon. That’s when we get a south swell of 5ft, with a period of 8 seconds, and a moderate offshore wind from the SSW. The combined energy hits 444 (moderate), and the conditions are looking clean. It’s a solid option for intermediate surfers, but keep in mind this spot is inconsistent, so it’s a rare treat.
Then, on Saturday the 29th of August, things get seriously heavy. The afternoon sees a south swell of 10ft with a 10-second period, and a fresh offshore wind from the SSW. The combined energy is a massive 1753 (very strong). That’s expert territory only—too big for most. The same goes for Sunday the 30th, with a 10ft south swell again, and Monday the 31st, with 8ft from the SSE. These are big, powerful, and only for the brave.
The absolute pick of the litter comes on Tuesday the 1st of September, in the morning. Glassy conditions, a 6ft south-southeast swell with a 10-second period, and combined energy of 608 (moderate to strong). The winds are dead calm, the wave energy is solid, and it’s going to be clean. That’s the one to aim for—just be aware it’s still a little over a week out, so keep an eye on the forecast.
After that, things taper off into ordinary, small surf through the first few days of September. Nothing worth getting excited about.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is the morning of the 1st of September at Leggy Point. It’s glassy, a decent size, and the energy is there. The big swells at the end of August are for experts only. Get on it if you can.
