The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve only got one spot on the radar for this stretch, Leggy Point. It’s an exposed beach and reef setup that’s inconsistent, so don’t expect it to be pumping every day. The opening days are a bit of a write-off. Saturday, July 18th, has some lumpy, cross-off wind and a short period swell, not worth paddling out for. Sunday, July 19th, is similar with a cross-shore breeze and a messy 6ft east swell, but the period is a weak 11 seconds, so the energy is moderate (912). The real chance to score comes on Monday, July 20th. The morning is looking choice: a clean 5ft east swell, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s groundswell, so it’ll have some shape. The wind is glassy, and skies are clear. The energy is moderate (719). For a spot that’s inconsistent, this is a standout window. The swell is a bit much for beginners, but it’s a sweet spot for intermediates. The water temp is 66°, which is about average for the time of year.
After that, the surf drops off hard. Tuesday through to the following Thursday (July 21st to July 30th) is mostly a bust. There are a few tiny pulses, but wind and onshore conditions kill any hope. Keep an eye on Friday, July 24th, though. The morning looks like a proper session for experienced surfers: a 8ft south swell, 10-second period, with offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is strong (1148). That’s a step up, but it’s over 8ft, so it’s expert territory. The afternoon is cleaner but smaller.
The end of the period, around Thursday, July 30th, and into August, is a mix of tiny wind swell and onshore slop. Nothing to get excited about. The long-range window on Friday, July 31st, has a 7ft east swell, but it’s wind-affected and lumpy. Inconsistent spots like Leggy Point can fire when the stars align, but this is a classic case of a short, punchy window followed by a long, quiet stretch.
Rusty out.
