The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Leggy Point.
It’s a bit of a slow start, to be honest. The first few days are pretty much a write-off. Tuesday the 14th is tiny with a weak 0.3ft S swell and a cross-onshore wind making it choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real window of opportunity shows up on Wednesday morning, the 15th. A fresh 6ft S swell rolls in, and we get a clean 19 mph offshore wind from the SW. That’s a solid combo for this beach-and-reef setup, and the energy is moderate (313). The swell period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and close together, but it’s clean and rideable. By the afternoon, the swell jumps to 8ft from the S with a longer 10-second period, and the energy goes strong (1238). The wind swings cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean, but that size is getting into expert-only territory – not for the faint-hearted.
Thursday the 16th hangs in there with 6ft to 8ft S swell, but the wind stays cross-off and the period drops to 8 seconds. The energy is still moderate to strong (429 to 705), but the conditions are a bit marginal, and the rain showers won’t help the mood.
After that, the surf backs off through the weekend and into early next week. Swell sizes drop to around 3ft to 5ft, and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, keeping things average. The energy is weak to moderate (130 to 611). Nothing really stands out until the following week.
Now, the real standout is the stretch from Wednesday the 23rd through Friday the 25th. We get a solid 5ft E swell with a very long period of 11 to 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong (618 to 703). The wind is glassy on the morning of the 23rd, and then turns clean cross-off for the rest of that run. That’s the kind of window that makes you want to clear your schedule.
For the entire run, the water temperature is 66°F, which is bang on average for the time of year – no surprises there.
Leggy Point is inconsistent, so when it turns on like that, you’ve got to be on it. The optimum swell direction is from the SE, and this E swell is close enough to work well here. The long period will also help the shape on this point-style setup.
The second week looks promising but less certain. Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th have some 4ft to 3ft E swell with long periods, but the energy is moderate (370 to 537) and the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, so it’s more of a session for the keen.
Overall, the best bet is the 23rd to the 25th. Mark it.
Rusty.
