The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at Leggy Point over the next couple of weeks. The short story is that we’ve got a long stretch of nothing before things finally turn on.
Starting off on Tuesday the 18th, we’ve got a weak 4ft swell from the ESE, but it’s blown out by a cross-onshore breeze. The water is sitting at 63°, which is a bit cooler than usual for this time of year. The wave energy is weak at 235. Total washout.
From Wednesday the 19th all the way through to Saturday morning the 29th, it’s a tough stretch. The swell stays tiny and inconsistent, with the wind often making it ugly. There are a few clean windows—like Wednesday morning the 19th when it goes glassy with a 2ft ESE swell—but the waves are too small to matter. Most days show poor surf, and the energy barely cracks triple digits. You’re looking at nearly two weeks of flatness.
The first real sign of life comes on Saturday morning the 29th. We see a 2ft south swell with a proper 12-second period, clean offshore wind from the SW, and wave energy climbing to a moderate 203. It’s small, but it’s a start.
Now the standout is Monday the 31st of August. Sunday the 30th is a monster—swells of 12ft with 18-second period and energy over 10,000—which is way too big for Leggy Point and only for experts. But Monday morning, the swell drops to a still-juicy 6ft from the SSE with a 12-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s your best window. The energy is a strong 956. The longer period gives better shape but longer lulls. It’s a bit hefty for beginners at that size. After that, Tuesday the 1st of September holds clean 4ft waves with glassy conditions, keeping the quality rolling, though the energy drops to a moderate 325.
Bottom line: you’re gonna have to sit on your hands for a week and a half. The reward comes at the very end of August and into September, with Monday the 31st being the absolute winner if you’ve got the skills.
Rusty out.
