Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming our way at Leggy Point over the next couple of weeks.
The water temp is sitting at 67°F, which is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
Alright, first up, Saturday the 4th of July has a small, clean 4ft swell from the S with a 12-second period – a little weak in the energy department (392), but it’s glassy in the morning with that light cross-off breeze. It’s surfable but not a standout. That afternoon goes a bit marginal.
Sunday the 5th gets a lot bigger. The morning swell jumps to 8ft from the S (9-second period, moderate energy at 1117), but with a fresh 22 mph cross-off wind, it’s gonna be a wild, blown-out mess – more for the adrenaline junkies or maybe kite surfers, honestly. By afternoon, it’s 10ft from the S (10 seconds, energy spiking to 1878) – still blowing fresh cross-off. It is way too big and raw for most punters.
Monday the 6th stays big but drops a touch – 8ft in the morning from the SSE (10 seconds, energy 1167) with a moderate breeze. Clean but still heavy. Not a beginner’s wave by any stretch.
Now, Tuesday the 7th of July is where it gets interesting for experienced surfers only. We’ve got a 10ft SSE swell with a 10-second period, and the wind swings offshore from the SW in the morning (16 mph), producing clean, moderate offshore conditions. The energy is very strong (3080 in the morning, 4040 in the afternoon). This is proper, powerful, big-wave territory. The swell direction (SSE) is not the optimum SE for this spot, but the offshore wind and size mean only the most skilled will be out there. Too big for the average surfer, no doubt.
Wednesday the 8th keeps the pattern: 10ft from the SSE, fresh 19 mph offshore wind in the morning (energy 3522). Still a big, clean, expert-only day. The afternoon eases to 8ft but stays clean.
Thursday the 9th is a bit more approachable. The morning has a 7ft SSE swell (10 seconds, energy 980) with a moderate offshore from the SW – clean, and the energy is moderate. It’s a good, solid intermediate session if you’re comfortable in overhead waves. The conditions are “very good.”
Friday the 10th of July morning is a real highlight. The swell drops to 7ft from the SSE (11-second period, energy 1018) with a gentle offshore from the WSW. That’s a lovely, clean, longer-period groundswell that will shape up nicely over the reef and points – excellent for experienced surfers. The wind is light, the waves have some punch, and it’ll be a fun, less frantic day.
After that, it fades away. Saturday the 11th has some cross-shore wind and smaller, lower-energy swell (5ft, period 10 seconds, energy 429). From Sunday the 12th all the way through to Wednesday the 15th of July, we’re looking at days of tiny, weak surf (0.7ft to 3ft), poor conditions, and very low energy (down to single digits). A proper flat spell.
Thursday the 16th shows a tiny pulse – 4ft from the S, 9-second period (energy 294) with a gentle offshore in the morning – but it’s small and weak. After that, it’s more of the same small stuff until Saturday the 18th, which has a strange 7ft spike from the S in the afternoon but with cross-shore wind and marginal conditions.
Looking long-range, Sunday the 19th of July has a massive 15ft swell from the S (11-second period, energy a whopping 4970 in the morning). The wind is cross-off to offshore and clean. That is an absolute monster – only for the elite, and the size is way beyond what this break can handle for most. It’s a long way out though, so treat that as promising but not locked in.
Best on offer: Friday the 10th of July morning at Leggy Point gets my pick. Clean, gentle offshore wind, a solid 7ft SSE groundswell with good period, and moderate energy. That’s the one for experienced lads. Tuesday the 7th is a close second for the big-wave crew, but only if you know exactly what you’re doing. For everyone else, there’s a big flat gap from the 12th to the 15th, so don’t get your hopes up for that week.
Rusty.
