The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the desk. Let's talk about what's cookin' for Leggy Point.
First up, the forecast has a bit of a slow start. The swell is around, but the conditions are a bit messy. We're looking at a few days of clean-up before we get to the real good stuff.
Right now, into Sunday the 19th, we're looking at a lumpy 6 ft swell from the east, but that 12 mph cross-shore wind is putting a chop on it. It's a bit of a battle just to get a decent one. The wave energy is moderate (912), so there's some push, but it's not clean. Monday and Tuesday aren't much better, with the wind staying cross-on and the swell dropping off. A bit of a frustrating start, to be honest.
We see a bit of a glimmer Thursday morning the 23rd. The swell is tiny, only 2 ft, but the wind goes light cross-off, cleaning up the surface. It's surfable, but you'll be working for it. The energy is weak (80).
Now, the first real standout shows up on Friday the 24th. The morning session is where it's at. We get a clean 5 ft swell from the south, with a gentle 9 mph offshore wind. The wave energy is moderate (438), and the conditions are set to be good. That's the best wave of this first week, no doubt.
Then we get a real treat on Saturday the 25th. The morning is glassy, with a long-period, 18-second groundswell from the south-southeast. The swell is only 2 ft, but that period is incredible. It'll be a clean, long-lined wave, but 2 ft is small, so it's a longboard or a big fish. The energy is moderate (461). This is a great session for the patient surfer.
The following week is a mixed bag, but the real beast is lurking. The last couple of days of July and into August get interesting. The wind goes clean offshore, but the swell gets big. On Thursday the 30th of July, the afternoon shows a 6 ft swell from the south-southeast with a 12-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 1160 – strong wave energy. The wind is cross-off, keeping it clean.
Then Friday the 31st of July is the big one. The morning shows a solid 8 ft swell from the south-southeast, with a 12-second period and a staggering 1934 combined energy. It's a fresh 19 mph offshore wind. This is a powerful, clean swell, but at 8 ft, it's for the experienced crew only. Beginners, stay on the beach for this one.
Saturday the 1st of August keeps the size up with a 8 ft south-southeast swell in the morning, but the wind picks up to a strong 25 mph offshore in the afternoon. That's a serious paddle, and the wave energy is 1836. It's a proper challenge, but the setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing at that point due to the wind strength.
The real standout in this whole outlook is Friday the 31st of July. The clean, strong offshore wind and that powerful 8 ft south-southeast swell with massive energy is the best on offer. The morning of Saturday the 25th is a close second for the sheer quality of the glass and long-period groundswell, even if it's small.
Stay safe out there, and I'll see you in the water.
Rusty.
