Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.
We’ve got a 16-day window ahead, and the first few days are a mixed bag. To be blunt, the early part of the week is a write-off for most of us, but things start cleaning up nicely by mid-week and into the following week.
Overall Pattern: We start with a big, raw swell that’s too much for the break. Then it drops back but stays messy. The real standout window opens up on Thursday, 9th July with improving conditions and holds through to the end of the second week.
The Early Days (5th – 7th July): Forget it. A solid 10 ft S swell on Sunday is just too much grunt for Leggy Point, and it’s howling out of the south at 19 mph, making for a cross-off mess. It drops to 8 ft Monday and Tuesday but the wind stays nasty and the comments are dire. The combined wave energy is high (around 2400-2600) on those big days, but it’s all just raw power with no finesse.
First Standout – Wednesday, 8th July (Morning): The light at the end of the tunnel. Swell drops to 8 ft from the SSE, but the wind backs off to a gentle breeze at 9 mph. It’s still a big wave (over 8 ft), so this is strictly for the experienced crew. The wave energy is sitting at 1692, which is still solid. It’s clean, but you’ll need your wits about you.
The Prime Window – Thursday, 9th July to Friday, 10th July: This is the best run of the whole forecast. On Thursday morning, we get a 7 ft SE swell with a true offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph (that’s 902 energy). By the afternoon, it drops to 6 ft with a light offshore breeze. Then Friday sees a 5 ft to 6 ft SE swell with light winds. This is the sweet spot for intermediate surfers, the water will be about average for this time of year. The waves are clean, the energy is moderate, and the direction is spot on for Leggy Point.
Second Standout – Friday, 17th July (Afternoon): A real gem in the second half. We get a 4 ft S swell with a 13-second period (proper groundswell) and glassy conditions (wind from the SE at 3 mph). The wave energy is 845 – moderate but packed with punch. This is a long-period swell, so expect better-shaped waves and longer lulls. It’s perfect for points and reefs. This is the one to circle on the calendar, because it’s going to be clean and lined up.
Rest of the Ride: After the 10th, it gets small and a little messy (11th to 13th) with cross-shore winds and weak energy dropping below 300. The 14th to 16th are small but saw a few clean moments with a 3 ft swell. Then the 17th is a beauty. The 18th and 19th get blown out again.
Crowds at Leggy Point: It can get crowded sometimes, so for that prime Thursday-to-Friday window, and the glassy 17th, expect a few local crew out there. But a light offshore and quality waves? Worth sharing.
So, to sum it up: if you’re an expert, the first Wednesday morning is on. For everyone else, lock in Thursday the 9th through Friday the 10th, and don’t sleep on Friday afternoon the 17th.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
