The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here again, but this time in feet and miles. Lookin' at the same charts, the same story.
The first decent surf isn't until the 16th at Leggy Point, a beach and reef setup. It's a touch inconsistent, so don't expect a party wave every set. The water is sittin' pretty at 65°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no complaints there. The swell on the 16th is a messy 6ft from the south with a short, weak 8-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 456, but with a cross-on breeze, it's gonna be a bit of a fight. Honestly, it's barely worth a paddle.
We've got a real dry spell from the 17th through the 23rd. The wind is wrong, the swell is small, and it's just not happening. A few little pulses come through, but nothing that gets the heart racing. You're better off waxing your board and waiting.
Now, things start to get interesting on the 24th. Friday afternoon the 24th is where you want to be. The wind swings offshore and light, and the swell jumps to a clean 6ft from the south, with a period of 10 seconds. The energy is strong (773), and the conditions are set to be very good. This is your first real standout.
The best of the whole run, though, is the morning of Saturday the 25th. It's a bit smaller at 5ft, but the swell is a proper 12-second groundswell from the south, which means more power and push. The combined energy is 611, and with a gentle offshore breeze, it's gonna be glassy. This is a true highlight for intermediate surfers. The long period might make it a bit walled-up at the beach, but on a reef setup like Leggy, it should be perfect.
After that, the wind gets messy again on the 25th afternoon, with a strong cross-off breeze that'll make it tough. The 26th and 27th are back to being ordinary as the swell drops and the wind swings around.
We get another solid window on the 30th. Thursday the 30th is a homerun. The swell is a solid 6ft from the south, with a 9-to-10-second period. The combined energy is massive – 965 in the morning and 1027 in the afternoon. That's very strong wave energy. The wind is light and clean, making for excellent, powerful surf. The afternoon is the pick, described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big, powerful swell that's not for the groms.
The 31st still has some size, but the wind looks to be a problem, shifting onshore and picking up. Could be a mess, but worth a look first thing.
So, to wrap it up: the opening week is a write-off. The standout sessions are the afternoon of the 24th, the morning of the 25th, and the afternoon of the 30th. The 30th is the biggest, most powerful, and cleanest of the lot.
Rusty.
