Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Leggy Point over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a no-go for anyone who isn’t a full-on charger. Tuesday and Wednesday morning this week are seeing a solid 12 ft to 10 ft swell from the SSE, with a period of 11 seconds, but the combined energy is massive at 4639 and 3482 — it’s just too big for this break. The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean, but you’d be biting off more than you can chew unless you’re an expert. Even Wednesday afternoon drops to 8 ft, but the score drops too, so not the one.
Now, Thursday morning, 9 July, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell drops to a manageable 5 ft from the ESE, still a solid 11-second period, and we’ve got offshore wind from the SW at 15 km/h. That’s a gentle offshore and clean scenario. The combined energy is 860, which is moderate, but the conditions are set up nicely. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. This is a standout for the intermediate crew — Leggy Point is inconsistent, so when it lines up like this, you get on it. It’s a beach and reef setup, so that long period groundswell might break a little straight, but with that offshore wind, it’ll be peeling nicely.
Thursday afternoon stays good with 6 ft from the SE, lighter wind, and clean. Friday morning and afternoon keep the fun going with 5 ft swells, glassy conditions on Friday arvo, and light winds. That Friday afternoon with glassy conditions and a 5 ft SE swell at 10 seconds is a beauty — clean, no wind, just you and the waves. Combined energy is 490, so moderate but fun.
Saturday the 11th drops off a cliff. The swell goes to 4 ft, cross-shore wind, and it’s poor. Sunday to Tuesday the swell gets tiny — 3 ft, 2 ft, even 1 ft — and the energy drops into the double digits. Not worth paddling out.
We get a bit of a pulse again on Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th. Wednesday morning brings 4 ft from the S with a 11-second period, light breeze, clean. The combined energy is 426, so moderate. But Thursday morning has a strong offshore wind at 30 km/h from the SW, with a 3 ft swell at a very long 13 seconds. That’s a clean, fresh offshore, but the swell is small. It’s more of a longboard or fish day.
Friday the 17th afternoon is a decent shout — 4 ft from the SSE at 11 seconds, gentle breeze, clean. Combined energy 356. It’s not pumping, but it’s rideable.
Then we hit a dry spell from Saturday the 18th through Sunday the 19th — poor surf, cross-shore chop, tiny swells. The energy is below 200.
Now, here’s the long-range wildcard. Monday the 20th morning, we’ve got a 7 ft swell from the S, but it’s a 9-second period, and the wind is a fresh cross-off at 35 km/h. Combined energy is 721, so moderate, but it’s going to be a bit messy. The afternoon is 6 ft from the S, 8 seconds, 857 energy — still marginal.
But Tuesday the 21st? Hold onto your board. The morning sees a 15 ft swell from the S at 12 seconds — that’s very long period groundswell — with a gentle offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is a whopping 11419. That is strong to very strong wave energy. But Leggy Point can’t handle that size. It’ll be too big, even for experts. The afternoon is 16 ft with similar energy. Wednesday the 22nd is still 10 ft from the SSE, but with light cross-shore wind. Again, too big for this break.
So, the best windows are Thursday 9 July through to Friday 10 July for the intermediate crew, and maybe a sneaky session on Friday 17 July afternoon. The long-range stuff on the 21st and 22nd is for the big-wave crew only, but it’s still a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, expect a few days of great, clean surf mid-week, then a gap, then a marginal pulse, then a massive but unmanageable swell. Stay sharp.
Rusty.
