The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next week and a half at Leggy Point is a real mixed bag of small, choppy surf, and a whole lot of waiting. Most days are blown out or just flat, but there are a couple of windows where it cleans up. The standout is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August, which is the real prize. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.

Starting off, Monday the 17th is a write-off. We’ve got a messy 4ft ESE swell with a short, weak 7-second period and a cross-onshore wind. The water is choppy and the energy is moderate (219). Tuesday is the same story – more choppy, cross-onshore wind and a similar 3ft to 4ft swell. Not worth paddling out.

Then Wednesday the 19th morning is the first little tease. The swell drops to 2ft from the ESE, but with a longer 10-second period and glass conditions. That’s a major positive – clean as a whistle. The energy is still moderate (201), and while the surf is small, if you’re on a log, it’ll be a fun, clean session on the glassy surface. The afternoon turns back to choppy, though.

From Thursday the 20th through to Saturday the 22nd, the swell fades away to tiny 1.0ft to 3ft junk, with mostly cross-winds or onshore breezes. There’s a couple of glassy moments, but the energy is weak (11 to 66). Not enough to do much with.

Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th see a new, very long-period 16 to 17-second groundswell from the SSE, but it’s only 1.0ft to 2ft. The energy climbs (117), but this long-period swell at a beach-and-reef setup like Leggy Point can break too straight – easy to paddle out with long gaps between sets, but still tiny.

Now, things get interesting on Tuesday the 25th morning. A 5ft S swell rolls in, but with a short 6-second period and a 19 mph offshore wind from the SW. It’s clean, but rough, and the energy is moderate (295). This is getting solid, but the short period makes it a bit lumpy. The afternoon is cleaner but crosses off.

Wednesday the 26th morning is similar: 3ft S swell, 11-second period, and a strong 19 mph offshore from the SW. The energy jumps to 480 (strong), and it’s glassy clean. This is a better-shaped wave with more push, but for experts only. The offshore wind will keep the faces clean, but it’s punchy.

Thursday the 27th morning cleans right up: 2ft S swell, 10-second period, gentle 9 mph offshore from the SSW. Nice, clean, small waves. Then Thursday afternoon goes cross-shore with a very long 16-second period swell, low energy (310), but tricky conditions.

Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are mostly small and cross-windy, with minimal surf energy (70 to 148).

The standout: Sunday the 30th of August. Early morning, we get a 6ft S swell (10-second period) with light offshore wind (6 mph from the S), giving us clean, glassy conditions. The combined energy is a massive 659 – that’s very strong wave energy. This is the best wave of the whole forecast: solid, clean, and punchy. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s getting on the bigger side for beginners, but for intermediates and up, this is the session. The crowd profile at Leggy Point says “sometimes”, so there could be people around, but it won’t be a zoo.

The afternoon turns cross-onshore and choppy, so get in early.

Monday the 31st drops down again to small, messy surf, and the first of September is flat, glassy leftovers.

Overall, the most reliable action is Wednesday the 19th morning for small clean waves, and the big winner is Sunday the 30th of August for proper, strong, clean surf. If you’re looking at those mid-week days with the strong offshore winds and punchy 3ft to 5ft waves, that’s serious gear – not for the beginner crew.

Rusty.
