The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Leggy Point (a beach and reef setup) is serving up over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for any decent wave riding. The energy is just not there, and when it does show up, the wind is usually in the wrong place. You’re looking at a lot of small, weak swell with poor surf conditions. The water temp is sitting around 64°F, which is about normal for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are flat and messy. Tiny swell around 0.7ft to 3ft, but the wind is either cross or cross-on, making it a total non-starter. Combine that with a combined energy reading of just 8 to 14 for the first session – that’s whisper-weak.
We finally see a glimmer on Wednesday the 26th morning. The wind goes light offshore from the WSW, and there’s a little 3ft ENE swell with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is still weak (97), but it’s clean. The catch? It’s labeled as “surfable but very ordinary,” and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. Not the day to call in sick for.
Thursday the 27th is your best bet in this whole 16-day window. Morning brings a clean 4ft S swell with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the SSW at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 168. The afternoon is even cleaner with a light cross-off breeze. It’s not pumping, but it’s the standout for the period – small, clean, and ridable for the intermediate crowd. Leggy Point is inconsistent here, so catching it on a clean day like this is a win.
From the 28th through to the 6th of September, it’s a real mixed bag of small surf and iffy winds. There’s a sniff of something on Friday the 4th of September morning with a clean 3ft S swell and a moderate combined energy of 218, and the wind is cross-off. It scored a decent mark for the conditions, but again, it’s a one-off morning window.
The last day, Sunday the 6th of September, fades back into small and weak territory.
Look, if you’re a kitesurfer, some of those afternoons with a bit more wind and small chop might look fun, but for a paddle surfer, Leggy Point is on a real lean stretch. Hang in there, keep an eye on the long-range for the 4th, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
