The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – for the next week and a half, Leggy Point is pretty much flat or average. Surf, what surf? There’s a long, quiet gap from now until we start seeing something worth paddling out for. The first real chance comes early in the second week, and we’ve got a couple of late bloomers that might just save the run.
Alright, let’s get into it. Leggy Point is a beach and reef set-up, exposed to the swell, but it’s inconsistent and rarely breaks properly. That’s the reality of this spot. Water temp is sitting at 63°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – you’ll feel that chill on the dawn patrol.
Starting off, from Monday 17th August through to the end of the week, it’s poor. Tiny waves, messy winds, and combined wave energy is weak – hovering between 12 and 245 (weak to moderate energy). Nothing to get excited about. Even the glassy morning on Wednesday 19th with 2ft from the ESE at 10 seconds period is just ordinary – surfable, but you’d be fighting for a knee-high slop.
The weekend of 22nd-23rd is even worse. A 1.0ft swell from the ENE with a 6-second period and glassy winds on Sunday morning? That’s not surf, that’s a lake. Energy is down to single digits and low double digits. Don’t bother.
Then we hit a quiet stretch through the end of August. From 24th to 28th, it’s all poor or marginal, with small 1ft to 2ft swells from the S or SSE, periods between 10 and 17 seconds. Energy picks up a bit – some readings of 138 and 183 (moderate) – but the winds are cross or cross-off, and the waves are just too small and weak to hold any shape.
Now, here’s the first true standout. Saturday 29th August morning. That’s the one. Clean, fresh offshore wind from the SW at 19 mph is going to hold the swell open. Swell size hits 6ft from the S with a 9-second period. Combined wave energy jumps to 453 (strong). This is proper, clean, offshore surf for intermediate to experienced surfers. The break is rare to work, but when it does, and with these winds, it could be a gem. Keep an eye on the tide, though.
Sunday 30th August afternoon is a monster, but for experts only. Swell hits 10ft from the S with an 8-second period, and the energy is massive – 1057 (very strong). The forecast says it’s wind and tide favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. A 10ft wave with that power at Leggy Point will be a freight train. Only for the brave.
Tuesday 1st September morning is the other standout. The swell drops back to a very clean 4ft from the S with a long 15-second period, light offshore wind, and combined energy of 857 (strong). That long period is prime for this reef and river mouth set-up – better shape, more energy, and longer lulls between sets, making it easier to get out back. Expect very good surf conditions.
Tuesday 1st September afternoon is decent too – 5ft from the SSE at 12 seconds, light cross-shore, but not quite as clean as the morning.
So, if you’re planning a session, the best on offer is the Saturday 29th morning for that clean offshore power, and Tuesday 1st September morning for the long, clean groundswell. Crowds are possible at Leggy Point – sometimes – but with these windows, it could get busy. Worth the risk.
Rusty.
