The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Leggy Point over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a rough start. From Wednesday the 19th all the way through the end of August, it’s mostly flat, weak, and messy. The first afternoon has a combined energy of 337, which is weak, and it just gets smaller from there. There’s a few glassy moments on the 22nd with tiny 0.7ft waves, but that’s barely a ripple. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so don’t expect a warm paddle.
The first real chance to get wet is Sunday morning the 23rd. We’ve got 2ft of SE swell with glassy conditions – clean as a whistle. The energy is still low (64), but it’s surfable. Tuesday the 25th morning also offers a brief window with 3ft of ENE swell and a light offshore, keeping things tidy.
The standout of the whole period is Thursday the 27th afternoon. A 4ft S swell rolls in with an 11-second period – that’s proper groundswell – and the combined energy jumps to 354, which is moderate. The wind is cross-off and clean. The S direction isn’t the perfect SE for Leggy, but it’s close enough to be worth a session.
Then things get serious. From Sunday the 30th afternoon, a big S/SSE swell builds. By Monday the 31st, we’re looking at 8ft to 12ft of SSE groundswell with a 12-14 second period, and the energy is massive – 2004 to 4822. That’s a lot of power. But the wind is onshore, so it’s going to be a messy, churning beast. This is strictly for experts, and honestly, with that much juice and onshore wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle spot.
The best of the big stuff might be Tuesday the 1st of September morning. The swell is still a solid 12ft from the SSE, but the wind is lighter from the NE. The forecast says the wind and tide are good, but the swell is just too big for this break. That’s a call you’ll have to make. The following days drop back to 10ft on Wednesday the 2nd and 7ft on Thursday the 3rd, but the onshore wind comes back.
If you want a clean, surfable wave, that Thursday the 27th afternoon is your best bet. 4ft of S swell, 11-second period, clean cross-off wind. It’s not perfect, but it’s the real highlight in a pretty average run.
Rusty.
