The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's see what's on the menu.
Overall, it's a bit of a mixed bag staring us down. We've got a fair bit of small to moderate swell running, but the wind is going to be a pain in the neck for much of the first week. There are a couple of windows that look alright, but nothing that's gonna have me calling in sick for work. The long-range stuff, way out towards the end of the month, has some real potential, but it's a long way off and the wind is a question mark.
We start off on Thursday, July 16th, with a messy 6.9ft southerly swell at Leggy Point. The wind is a cross-off, which is good, but the period is short, only 7 seconds, so it's gonna be a bit of a bumpy, weak mess. The combined energy is moderate (494), but the short period kills it. It's honestly not worth getting wet for. The rest of the week into the weekend is more of the same: small, short-period swell with cross-shore winds. The water temp is sitting around 64.8°, which is about average for this time of year.
The first real glimmer of hope is on Sunday, July 19th. We've got a 5.2ft easterly swell with a much better 10-second period, and the combined energy is up to a solid 624. The wind is still cross-shore, but it's light, so the chop shouldn't be too bad. It's a 'marginal' call, but it's the best we've seen so far. Monday morning, July 20th, looks even cleaner with a light offshore wind from the NE, but the swell has dropped a touch to 4.6ft. If you're keen, that Sunday and Monday morning session is your best bet for the first week.
Then we hit a bit of a flat spell. From Tuesday, July 21st, through to Thursday, July 24th, the swell drops right off – we're talking knee-high dribble. The wind is all over the shop, too. It's a solid gap of a few days where you're better off waxing your board or checking the tides.
After that dry spell, things get interesting. Saturday, July 25th, is a standout. We've got a tiny 1.6ft south-southeast swell, but look at that period – 19 seconds! That's a proper, long-period groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the SW. The combined energy is moderate (278), but that period and clean wind means it's going to be glassy and peeling. For a point break like Leggy, this is a dream. It's for the more experienced crew, though, as that long period can make things a bit tricky, but it'll be lined up and clean. Sunday, July 26th, is similar with a 3.0ft swell from the south at 16 seconds and offshore winds. The combined energy is up to 417. It's a bit more size, but still a great session. These two days are the true standouts of the whole forecast.
Looking further ahead to Wednesday, July 29th, we get a solid shot of size with a 7.2ft southerly swell, but it's a short period (10 seconds) and the wind is a messy cross-shore. The combined energy is strong (897), but the conditions are gonna be rough. It's a big, chunky, cross-shore mess. Maybe one for the kites. The following Friday, July 31st, looks a little better with a 6.2ft SSE swell, a 10-second period, and a fresh offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is strong (731), and the wind is clean, so it could be a solid session if the timing is right, but it's a long way off.
So, get out on Sunday the 19th or Monday the 20th for a sneaky session, but the real magic is on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. That's the one to circle on the calendar.
