The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve been looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks. It’s a mixed bag at Leggy Point, but there are some moments to get excited about.
Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at 66°, which is just about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off if you’re after quality. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th have some waist-high, mediocre wind swell coming from the east, but the wind is all wrong. It’s cross-shore or cross-onshore, leaving a chop on the surface. The wave energy is moderate (912), but the conditions are just marginal. You’ll be scratching your head. Tuesday the 21st is even smaller, and by Wednesday the 22nd the swell is just about gone. Thursday the 23rd has a tiny pulse of south swell, but it’s nothing to paddle out for.
The real story starts to shape up on Friday the 24th. The morning brings a pulse of south swell at 5ft, 9-second period, with a clean, cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is climbing (426) and it’s looking like a good session. That clean, light wind will make for some fun, lined-up waves. It’s the first proper standout of the window.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th keep the south swell rolling, but it drops off a bit to 3ft to 5ft. The period stretches out, hitting 14 seconds on Saturday afternoon and 11 seconds on Sunday. That groundswell energy will be there (610 on Saturday), and with light cross-offshore winds, both mornings and afternoons are looking clean. This is the sweet spot for the intermediate crew – not too big, well-shaped, and easy to paddle into.
Now, hold on to your board. The 28th of July, Tuesday morning, is something special. The swell jumps to 7ft from the south, with a 13-second period, and the energy is a powerful 1400. The wind is glassy, just a slight air. This is clean, powerful groundswell, and it’s going to be absolutely pumping. The afternoon, though, is a beast. The swell hits 12ft at 17 seconds from the SSE, with a massive 6262 energy reading. That’s a very strong, very long-period swell. This is expert territory only. The wind is light cross-onshore, but the size is going to close out the beach sections and only be for the brave at the reef. Wednesday the 29th is still big, but the wind picks up and messes it up.
The 30th and 31st of July see the swell drop back to 4ft to 5ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-shore, making it choppy and ordinary. Then, the first of August is a write-off with strong onshore winds.
But look at the 3rd of August, Monday morning. Another big pulse: 10ft, 13-second period from the SSE, with a huge 3331 energy reading. Once again, the wind is light and clean, but the forecast says it’s too big for this break. That’s a big, powerful, long-period groundswell, and it will be breaking way too straight and heavy for most spots at Leggy Point. Only for the experts if they can find a channel.
Overall, the best bets are the morning of Friday the 24th for the first decent swell, and the 26th of July for clean, manageable waves. The morning of the 28th of July is a true standout for experienced surfers, with clean, powerful groundswell. The rest of the window is either flat, too small, too windy, or too big.
Rusty.
