The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I've got the local scoop for you.
First off, the water's sitting right around 66°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next couple of days are a bit of a write-off for a proper surf. Friday afternoon is a no-go with that weak, short-period swell and cross-shore wind. Saturday and Sunday see a bit more size, around 5ft to 7ft, but the wind is messy and the conditions are marginal. The wave energy is moderate (235 to 964), but it’s not clean enough to get excited about.
The real standout is Monday morning, the 20th of July. That’s where it’s at. The wind goes glassy, right off the land from the ENE, and we’ve got a consistent 5ft swell from the East with a 10-second period. The energy is solid (547), and the conditions are forecast to be very good. Leggy Point will be breaking cleanly, with that long-period groundswell pushing in. It’s exposed to the SE, which matches the swell direction nicely. Just a heads up though, it’s an inconsistent break, so you’ll have to be patient, but when a set comes through, it’ll be worth it. The crowd factor is "sometimes" here, so you might not have it all to yourself, but it won’t be a circus.
Monday afternoon sees the wind shift and the quality drops off. Tuesday through the rest of the week is a mix of smaller swell and onshore or cross winds, with nothing really worth paddling out for. The wave energy dips right down into the double digits or low triple digits after Tuesday.
There’s a long gap of no real recommendations from Tuesday the 21st all the way through to the end of the month. A few days in there have tiny, weak swell and poor conditions. The 31st of July has a bit of a pulse in the afternoon with a 6ft swell from the South, but the period is a short 7 seconds, making it a bit of a lumpy, wind-affected mess, so it’s still a pass.
The beginning of August looks like a flat spell.
So, to sum it up: your only real window is Monday morning, the 20th. Get it while it’s good.
Rusty.
