The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's break down the next couple of weeks for the lineup.
The start of this run is a bit of a slow start. There's a little bit of swell, but the wind and conditions are all over the place. We're going to have to be patient for the good stuff.
The first real chance to get wet comes on the morning of Tuesday, August 25th. The waves are tiny at 2ft from the SSE, but the wind is glassy. It's 'surfable but very ordinary,' and the swell energy is weak (88). It's not a standout, just a chance for a clean, quiet session on a small board if you need to get the wax wet.
Then it's mostly small and weak for a couple of days. The next blip is on the morning of Thursday, August 27th. The swell comes up to 5ft from the south, and the energy jumps to a moderate 397. It's clear skies, but the wind is a light cross-shore. It's flagged as marginal, so it's worth a look, but it's not the main event.
Now, the first proper standout is the morning of Friday, August 28th. Leggy Point should be clean. We've got 3ft of south swell with a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the WNW. The energy is solid and moderate (263). The water temp is about 64°, right where it should be for this time of year. This is the session to aim for after the quiet start.
But the real highlight, the one you need to be ready for, is the afternoon of Sunday, August 30th. The swell pumps up to 7ft from the south, and the combined energy is a massive 1598 – that is powerful, serious surf. The wind stays clean and slightly off from the SSE. This is a big south swell. At over 5ft, it's for the experienced crew only. Beginners and intermediates should give this one a wide berth.
After that peak, we see a couple of days with solid size but trickier winds. The morning of Monday, August 31st, offers 5ft from the south with a long period, but it's a light cross-onshore. It's worth a check, but the quality won't match that Sunday session.
The tail end of the forecast into the first week of September sees the energy drop right off. We get some glassy mornings on the 2nd and 4th, but the swell is tiny (2ft). The rest is small and mostly poor. It looks like a solid blank stretch sets in from about the 3rd, with very little to get excited about.
To wrap it up: the early week is a scratch, the Friday morning the 28th is a good, clean session, and the Sunday the 30th is the true standout for the big-wave hunters.
See you in the water.
Rusty.
