The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. It’s a bit of a mixed bag for us at Leggy Point over the next 16 days. The first real action doesn't get going until Thursday the 16th, so we’ve got a quiet start.
We kick off on Thursday, July 16th. The morning is looking okay with a 7ft south swell, but that’s got a short, weak period of 8 seconds and a cross-off wind. The wave energy is moderate at 587, but the conditions are marginal. The afternoon sees the swell dip to 6ft, still short-period from the south, and the wind swings cross, making for a bit of chop. Not the best start.
Friday, July 17th is a letdown. The swell drops right off to 4ft from the ESE with a very short 6-second period. Combined energy is weak at 237. The morning is clean with a light cross-off breeze, but there’s just no power.
The weekend is a washout. Saturday, July 18th has a small, weak 5ft ESE swell (7-second period) that turns messy in the afternoon. Sunday, July 19th brings a bigger pulse of 6ft from the east with a better 10-second period. The combined energy is a solid moderate 840, but the wind is cross-shore all day, creating a cross-chop that’s going to ruin it.
Monday, July 20th is poor. Onshore winds from the ENE kill any chance of clean waves, even with a 5ft east swell. The rest of that week into the next is a slow decline. The swell fades from 4ft down to 2ft, and while we get some clean, offshore mornings (like Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd), the waves are just too small and weak to get excited about. The combined energy drops into the double digits.
The standout of the whole period, but it's a long way off, is Wednesday, July 22nd. It’s not going to be big, with a 3ft ENE swell, but the wind is light and offshore from the SW. That’s clean, glassy conditions at Leggy Point. The combined energy is only 184, so it’s weak, but if you’re after a long session on a longboard with zero wind, this is your morning. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The second week from July 24th to the 31st is mostly flat with tiny, weak swells (1.0ft to 2ft) and poor conditions. There’s a moment on Sunday, July 26th with fresh offshore winds and a 3ft south swell (7-second period), but the energy is weak (98) and the waves are just ordinary.
Bottom line: this is a quiet 16-day window. The best bet for a clean, surfable wave is the morning of Wednesday, July 22nd, but keep your expectations small. Beyond that, forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
