The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks here at Leggy Point. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real gems hiding in the long-range, so don’t write this one off.
The first week is a bit of a slow burn, honestly. We kick off Monday the 20th of July with a clean, glassy morning. The swell is at 5 ft from the east with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is sitting at 699 – that’s moderate energy, but it’s looking really good. The wind is glassy, ENE at just 3 mph, so it’s going to be smooth. That’s your standout for the first few days, no question. That morning session is the best on offer early on. After that, things get a bit messy. The wind goes cross-on and picks up through the afternoon, and Tuesday drops off fast. By Wednesday and Thursday the swell is tiny and the wind is a problem, so you’re looking at a few days of nothing really worth paddling out for.
Then we get a nice little pulse on Friday the 24th. The morning is clean, with a 6 ft swell from the south, period of 9 seconds, and combined energy of 513. The wind is light cross-off, WSW at 6 mph, and it’s clean. That’s a solid morning. Saturday and Sunday build on that with clean conditions and increasing swell. Sunday the 26th morning is a beauty – 6 ft from the south, period 10 seconds, 519 energy, and glassy cross-off wind. That’s a top pick for the first week.
Now, the real heavy stuff starts rolling in from Thursday the 30th of July. We’ve got a massive 10 ft south swell coming through, with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a whopping 2914. That’s strong. The wind is clean and cross-off. But here’s the thing – this is a beach and reef setup, and at 10 ft, this is strictly for experts. Beginners, stay on the sand. The swell is too big. Friday the 31st is even bigger, with 12 ft from the south, period 12 seconds, and energy at 6075. That’s huge. The wind is better on the morning of the 31st, glassy with a light westerly, so if you’re an experienced surfer, that’s your window. But it’s serious.
The first weekend of August cleans up a bit. Saturday the 1st has a 8 ft swell from the SSE, period 11 seconds, and energy around 1490. The afternoon is the pick with a clean cross-off wind. That’s excellent for experienced surfers. Sunday the 2nd has a 8 ft swell, still big, but with a gentle offshore wind from the SW, so it’s clean and hollow. That’s another standout for the big-wave crew.
We roll into Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th with the swell dropping to 6 ft and 5 ft, and the wind going glassy again. That’s a nice, clean end to the run for intermediate surfers. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
So, overall, the best on offer is that glassy Monday morning the 20th of July for a clean, fun-size wave, and then the big south swell from Thursday the 30th through Sunday the 2nd of August for the experienced guys. The crowds at Leggy Point can be sometimes present, so keep that in mind. The swell direction is from the south and SSE, which is near the optimum for this spot, so the waves will be well-shaped.
Rusty out.
