Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the table. So, we’re starting off pretty quiet, and the first decent chance won’t roll in until Saturday morning the 4th of July. From there, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, with a solid run of bigger, powerful swell kicking in around Sunday the 5th, hanging around through to the following Friday. That’s the heart of it. There’s a lull after that, with very little on offer from Sunday the 12th, then another pulse of energy mid-week on the 14th and 15th before it fades out again. The standout sessions are definitely the Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning windows when conditions really line up.
The first worthwhile call is Leggy Point on Saturday morning the 4th of July. We’re looking at a clean 3ft south groundswell (11 seconds) pushing in. The water is sitting at 67°F, which is right about normal for the time of year. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the WNW, so it’ll be glassy and well-shaped. The combined energy is a modest 269, so it’s not a beast, but it’s a super fun, user-friendly size for intermediate surfers. Just be aware this spot is inconsistent, and it can get a crowd here sometimes.
That Sunday the 5th, things step up in a big way. Swell jumps to 8ft from the south, with a moderate period of 11 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving – the combined energy jumps to 1645 (moderate to strong). This is getting into the size range where it’s going to be too much for beginners and better left for experienced surfers, particularly because the wind is a fresh 19 mph from the south, keeping it a bit lumpy. This kind of energy at a beach and reef setup might also be worth a look for the kite surfers.
The absolute pick of the whole run is Tuesday morning the 7th of July. The swell is a solid 7ft from the SSE with a 10-second period, producing clean, powerful lines. The wind is offshore from the SSW at 16 mph, keeping the faces super clean. The combined energy is a very solid 966 (moderate energy). This is the one to circle – proper offshore conditions with a decent sized, orderly swell, all pointing well for the break. Crowds are still possible here, so get out early.
Wednesday morning the 8th of July is nearly as good. A big 8ft SSE swell (10 seconds) with a fresh 19 mph offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy is massive at 2438 (strong to very strong). Again, this is expert-level size with excellent conditions.
By Thursday morning the 9th, it’s actually too big. The swell hits 10ft with a 10-second period and strong offshore wind – this break is likely maxed out and just a washing machine for experts only.
After that, it backs off quickly. Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th have cleaner dropping swell (7ft down to 4ft) with light to glassy winds, offering some nice, less intense waves. But then it goes flat from Sunday the 12th through to about the 14th.
There’s another pulse on Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th of July, with swell back up to 7ft to 7ft from the south with a fresh 19 to 22 mph offshore wind. The combined energy on the 14th afternoon is 1898 (strong). That’s a promising window a week and a half out – less certain, but worth keeping an eye on.
By the 16th and beyond, it’s dropping off again quickly into weak, windy and poor conditions.
Rusty.
