The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for Leggy Point.
For the next few days, it’s pretty quiet. You’re gonna have to be patient. The first half-decent window doesn’t open up until Thursday the 27th of August, and even then, it’s not a world-beater.
On Thursday the 27th of August, the morning is the best early call. Swell is 5ft from the S, with a 9-second period. The wind is light out of the SSE, giving us a clean cross-off breeze. The combined swell energy is (332), so there’s a moderate amount of power. Water temp is about normal for this time of year. Leggy Point is a beach and reef setup, and it’s inconsistent, but it likes swell from the SE. This S swell isn’t perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got for a while. It’s inconsistent, so don’t expect a party wave every set.
Then we hit a long dry spell. The next real standout doesn’t show until Saturday the 5th of September. The Saturday morning session is the best of the whole 16 days. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the S, with a long 11-second period – proper groundswell. The combined energy is up at (480), solid moderate, and the wind is light from the SSW, blowing clean offshore. That’s a winner. The swell direction is S, a little off the ideal SE, but with clean offshore wind, the waves should be well-shaped. The long period will mean longer waits between sets, but the quality will be there. Because the spot is inconsistent, you might have to work for it, but it’s the one to aim for.
The Saturday afternoon turns a bit ugly. Swell is similar, but the wind swings to the ESE, making it cross-onshore and choppy. The combined energy actually spikes to (705) – that’s strong energy – but the wind ruins it for paddle surfing. If you’ve got a kite, that combo of strong swell and side wind might be interesting, but for a regular surfer, it’s a pass.
After that, it’s all downhill. Small, weak swells and onshore winds dominate right through to the 8th of September. Nothing else worth chasing.
So, the takeaway: Thursday morning the 27th of August is your first chance with a clean 5ft S swell. But the big one to save for is Saturday morning the 5th of September – 3ft S groundswell with clean offshore wind. It’s a way off, so keep an eye on it, but it’s got the best potential of the whole run. The rest is mostly a write-off.
Rusty.
