Table - best surf conditions forecast for Leggy Point over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming for Leggy Point.
Right off the bat, the first few days have some surf, but it’s not all going to be easy. Friday July 10th actually looks pretty good – we’ve got a solid 6 ft southeast swell, with a period of 10 seconds. That’s pushing some moderate wave energy through the morning, and the wind is light and cross-off, so it should be clean. By Friday afternoon it turns glassy with the wind coming from the southeast at just 3 mph. That’s a real treat – clean, lined-up waves. That’s our true standout for the whole period. Leggy Point is an exposed beach and reef setup, so it can handle that direction well.
Saturday July 11th drops off a bit. The swell hangs around 4 ft in the morning, but it gets cross and a bit choppy with a 12 mph northwest wind. Not the best. Saturday afternoon is even smaller and messier.
By late Sunday through to Wednesday July 22nd, it’s pretty poor. The swell drops away to nothing much – under 2 ft most of the time, with weak energy. That’s a long flat run, about 9 days of not much to write home about. A few mornings have clean conditions but the swell just isn’t there.
Then things get wild. From Wednesday July 15th, the swell absolutely cranks up. We’re talking 12 ft on Wednesday afternoon, building to 18 ft by Friday July 17th, and peaking around 18 ft to 15 ft over the weekend with very strong wave energy. The wind is offshore or cross-off at times, so it will look clean. But here’s the thing – Leggy Point is a beach and reef break, and with a long-period swell (12-13 seconds), it’s going to be too big for most, only for experts. The forecasts keep saying it’s too big for this break. That’s not beginner friendly, and even experienced surfers will have to be on their game. The swell direction stays southeast, which is optimum, but the size is extreme. So, take that as a big wave session only if you’re solid.
After that, it slowly backs off. By Monday July 20th we’re back to 6 ft – still a bit lumpy with cross-shore winds – and then it dies down again into the midweek. There’s a flash of life on Saturday July 25th with a 10 ft southeast swell (13 seconds, very strong energy), but again, that’s too big for this break and the wind is cross.
Overall, your best bet is that Friday July 10th – the morning glassy session. After that, it’s either flat or too heavy. If you’re an expert and you want a challenge, July 16th to 18th might be your window, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
This is Rusty, signing off.
