The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
Alright, straight up, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for any decent surfing at Seal Rocks. There’s a lot of junk in between the windows of hope. The first real chance of something good doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 23rd of July, so we’re looking at a solid nine-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
On Wednesday morning the 23rd, we finally get a pulse. A solid 6ft east swell with a long 13-second period rolls in, and the wind is a clean offshore from the southwest. The wave energy is strong (1104), promising some proper, well-shaped lines. This is the standout of the run. Seal Rocks is a sheltered point, and with that east swell wrapping in, it should be handling the size just fine. The water temp is about 68°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Thursday the 24th keeps the momentum going. Morning glass-off conditions with a light west-northwest breeze and a 5ft east swell at 11 seconds. That’s glassy, clean, and fun-sized. The energy is still moderate (594). Afternoon turns onshore, so get in early.
Then Friday the 25th morning holds another solid window. A 6ft east swell, 12-second period, with a clean offshore southwesterly. It’s a bit breezier, but the waves will have decent push. The energy is 809, which is moderate to strong. Afternoon gets hammered by a strong south-southwest wind, so that morning session is the one.
After that, things drop off again into the last week of July. Monday the 28th brings a 6ft south swell with 11 seconds, but it’s a bit on the messy side with a cross-off wind and a marginal rating. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about compared to the 23rd and 24th.
So, the clear winner is Wednesday the 23rd of July. That’s the one to mark on the calendar. The Thursday morning glass-off is a close second. Get on it, because the rest of the fortnight is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
