Treachery Head Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks at Treachery Head. Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burn for the first few days, but there are a couple of windows that will get the blood pumping.

We start off with a bit of a dud. Sunday and Monday are messy, with onshore winds and lumpy, poor surf. The swell is there, but the wind is just killing it. It’s not until Wednesday the 9th that we get our first real chance. The wind drops out completely, going glassy, and we’ve got a clean 5ft south-southeast swell with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (404), and it’s the first time the ocean actually looks inviting. It’s a small day, but it’ll be the cleanest surf we’ve seen in a while.

Then things get properly serious. Thursday the 10th sees a big jump in size – we’re looking at a solid 10ft of south swell with a 10-second period, and the energy is pumping (1847). But, and it’s a big but, the wind swings onshore and it’s going to be lumpy and chopped up. This one’s for the experienced crew only, and even then, it’ll be a battle. That’s a lot of water moving.

Friday the 11th is still big, but the wind eases a touch. It’s still onshore, and the surf conditions are only marginal, with the tide being a factor. The swell drops a little to 8ft, but the energy is still strong (1392). It’s a wild day.

After that, the size backs off and we’re waiting for the wind to swing offshore. Saturday is still a bit messy, with a 6ft swell and cross-onshore breeze. But then, we get to the good stuff. Sunday the 13th is the standout for this whole stretch. The wind goes cross-offshore, the sky is clear, and we’ve got a clean 4ft south swell with an 11-second period. The energy is solid (625), and the forecast says "very good surf conditions." This is the day to clear the calendar. Treachery Head is a point break, and a long-period south swell like this is exactly what it wants.

Monday the 14th keeps the good vibes going. It’s a bit smaller at 3ft, but the wind is light offshore, it’s glassy, and the south swell has stretched out to a 12-second period. The energy is still there (294). Clean and fun.

After that, the swell dips again through the middle of the week. We’ve got a few small, clean days, but nothing with much push. It’s a quiet spell.

The next real hope is Sunday, September 20th – wait, sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s look at the back half of the forecast.

We had a brief pulse of bigger south swell (6ft) on Thursday the 17th, but the wind was howling offshore and it was messy. Friday the 18th afternoon looks better, with a lighter offshore wind and a clean 5ft south-southeast swell. Then, Saturday the 19th morning is another highlight. The wind is completely calm, glassy, and the swell is 4ft from the south-southeast at 10 seconds. It’s going to be clean and lined up. The energy is moderate (581). That’s a great way to start the weekend. The afternoon, however, looks like it’s going to get crossed up with a bit of a cross-shore breeze.

Beyond that, it fades out. The water temp right now, for the first surf we look at, is about average for this time of year, so no need for the extra thick suit just yet.

So, in short: the standout is Sunday morning the 13th, and Saturday morning the 19th is another cracker. The rest has some size but mostly wind issues. Get on it when it’s good.
