The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The opening days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a solid window of decent surf on offer. The first real standout is the Wednesday morning session, which is looking prime. The water’s sitting at a comfortable 65°, which is just about average for this time of year. We’ve got a clean 7ft south swell pushing in with a solid 10-second period, so there’s plenty of energy in the water (891). The wind is a clean offshore from the SSW, holding it all together. This is a top-notch session for the experienced crew, but that 7ft size is going to be a bit much for beginners. Sandon Point is the spot, and it’s a consistent point break that'll handle this swell well.
Come Wednesday afternoon, the swell holds but the wind swings cross-offshore, making it a little trickier. The energy is actually up to 1168, so there’s heaps of power, but the conditions are just a bit more marginal.
Thursday morning sees the swell drop to 5ft, still with a cross-off wind, but the period has shortened to 8 seconds, making it a bit weaker. By Thursday afternoon, the wind picks up to 16 mph and the period drops further to 7 seconds, so conditions turn poor. The rest of the week into Friday and Saturday is a write-off with tiny swell and bad wind, so we’re looking at a gap of a few days with nothing to get excited about.
Sunday the 19th is the next big call. Sunday morning is looking clean with a 6ft swell from the ENE and a very long period of 11 seconds (699 energy). The wind is a light SSE, so the surface will be clean. The long period makes this a groundswell, which will work well at Sandon Point’s point break setup, offering better-shaped waves and longer lulls between sets. This is a good one for intermediate surfers and above.
Sunday afternoon stays similar in size, but the wind goes cross-shore, so it’s not as clean as the morning.
Monday and Tuesday are a bit of a letdown with onshore winds, making things choppy and messy. The swell holds around 5ft, but the quality drops off.
Wednesday the 22nd is a good little window. The morning is clean with a light cross-off wind from the west, with 4ft of ENE swell. The afternoon is absolute glass – zero wind, flat calm, and 4ft of clean swell. This is a beautiful session for a longboard or a funboard, light crowds likely as it’s often a busy spot, but the conditions will be worth it.
Saturday the 25th morning is another glassy gem. 4ft of east swell with zero wind, perfect for a quiet paddle. Afternoon gets ruined by a strong onshore NNE wind, so get in early.
The final week of the month sees the swell drop off significantly. We’re looking at waist-high to chest-high, mostly clean conditions on the 26th and 27th mornings, but the energy is low (around 168-325). It’s rideable, but nothing to write home about. The 28th, 29th, and 30th are a slow fade to small, weak surf with mostly clean winds but very little push.
Best of the best: The standout is undoubtedly Wednesday morning, July 15th – that’s your top pick for a proper session. The backup is Sunday morning, July 19th for the long-period groundswell, and Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd for the glassy conditions.
Rusty, signing off.
