The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Acids.
Alright, it’s a bit of a slow start. The first few days are pretty ordinary with weak, short-period windswell and cross-shore winds messing things up. Keep your expectations low for the first week – not much to get excited about. The real action starts to build towards the end of the month and into the first couple of days of August.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a write-off. Saturday you’ve got poor surf with a tiny 2 ft to 2 ft southerly swell, and the wind is all over the place. Sunday morning sees a bump to 6 ft from the ENE but the winds are still cross, making it a messy, marginal affair. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday the 20th is where we start to see a glimmer. The morning is clean, with a light offshore breeze from the NNW and a clean 5 ft ENE swell. The combined energy is moderate at 640. It’s not huge, but it’s the first decent window of the forecast. The afternoon goes a bit lumpy though.
Tuesday the 21st morning repeats the same pattern: clean, 4 ft ENE swell, light offshore winds. It’s a good, small wave session for a intermediate surfer. The afternoon is again choppy.
The rest of the week through to Saturday the 25th is a mixed bag of small, weak swells, with the occasional clean window but nothing to write home about. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, no surprises there.
Now, the standout period is the last few days of July and the start of August. Friday the 31st of July is a big one, but not for the faint-hearted. The morning brings a massive 13 ft southerly swell with a long 12-second period. The combined energy is a massive 8078 – that’s strong to very strong. The wind is clean and offshore from the SSW. This is proper, heavy groundswell. But at 13 ft, it’s too big for this break, and the forecast flags it as such. This is for experts only, and even then, you’ll want to be careful. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 10 ft, but still very big.
Saturday the 1st of August morning is the true sweet spot. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8 ft from the SSE, with a long 11-second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the S, keeping it clean. The combined energy is 1553 – still strong. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. It’s big, but not out of control. The crowds are *often* here, so expect company.
Then Sunday the 2nd of August morning, it’s back to glassy conditions with an 12 ft southerly swell. Again, that’s too big for this spot, so it’s a pass for all but the most experienced.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a dud. The best on offer is the Saturday morning of the 1st of August when you get a clean, powerful 8 ft SSE groundswell with light offshore winds. That’s the one to circle on your calendar. The Friday before is for the big-wave chargers only.
Rusty out.
