The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let's break down what's happening at Zenith Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch ahead. The water's sitting at about 64°, which feels a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll want a decent wetsuit if you're heading out. For the next ten days, the wave energy is mostly weak to moderate, with combined swell energy readings rarely cracking the 200s. It’s a flat spell, no doubt about it. We're looking at a solid run of poor surf, with a few brief windows of clean but tiny conditions. The first real chance of anything worth paddling for doesn't show up until the very end of the month.
The first decent opportunity I see is Wednesday the 19th in the morning. It's not much, but it’s the best of the early run. We get a clear sky and a glassy 3 mph wind from the north-northeast, which is ideal for clean conditions. The swell is only 3 ft out of the east-southeast with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit weak and bumpy, but at least it’s rideable. Don't expect any power behind it though, as the combined energy is only 222.
After that, it’s back to the grind. The 20th and 21st are pretty forgettable with small, weak waves and messy winds. The 23rd of August brings a morning of glassy conditions, with the swell swinging to the south-southwest at 1 ft and a period of 9 seconds. The energy jumps to 76, but the size is just too small to get excited about.
Now, the one that has my attention is the very last day of the forecast. On Monday the 1st of September, we see a proper pulse of energy arrive. The combined swell energy hits a massive 2363, which is strong. We're looking at a solid 10 ft southerly swell with an 11-second period. The morning wind is a clean offshore from the west-southwest at 12 mph, which is fantastic.
Here’s the catch, and it’s a big one: at 10 ft, this swell is too big for this break. The forecast notes say the swell is predicted to be too big for the spot. This is strictly for experienced surfers only, and even then, you need to be wary. The south-southeast direction isn't the optimum for Zenith Beach, which prefers an east-southeast angle. The period is a solid 11 seconds, which gives it some punch, but the size is the real story here. This is the standout, but it’s a heavyweight that will take some serious skill and local knowledge to handle. The day before, on the 31st, is also promising with 5 ft to 7 ft southerly swell and clean offshore wind, making for a good lead-in, but that Monday morning is the real beast.
So, to wrap it up: don't bother with the first week and a half unless you're desperate for a paddle on the tiny, clean days. Keep your eye on the 31st of August for a fun, solid session, and then the 1st of September for the big, expert-only swell. Stay safe out there.
