The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at Cudmirrah Reef. This is a serious reef break, only for the advanced crew, and it breaks consistently, so you’ll likely see a few heads out there sometimes. The water temp is about 64°F, which is pretty normal for the season.
We start off with a nice little window on Sunday the 19th morning. The swell is 5ft from the ENE, with a period of 12 seconds – that’s some proper groundswell energy (696). The wind is a glassy 3 mph from the WSW, so it’ll be slick as anything. That’s your early pick. The afternoon turns a bit cross-on with a light easterly breeze, so it’ll get a little messy. Monday the 20th morning is still in the game with a 5ft ENE swell and a clean cross-off northerly at 6 mph, but the energy is still moderate (700). Tuesday the 21st morning is glassy again with a smaller 4ft swell, but the period drops to 10 seconds and the energy drops off (359). The rest of the week gets a bit average – Wednesday and Thursday have small swell, short period, or onshore winds, nothing special.
We’ve got a bit of a lull, then Friday the 24th morning picks up with a 5ft S swell, 9-second period, and a clean offshore WNW breeze at 6 mph – that’s a solid option (325).
Now, the real gem is a week out, on Sunday the 26th morning. The swell cranks up to 8ft from the south, with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 2588 – that’s some serious power. The wind is a glassy 3 mph from the west. This is prime surf, but it’s definitely only for the experts. The long period from the south will wrap around the reef perfectly, giving you some long, fast waves. That’s the clear standout, but it’s a long-range forecast, so don’t set your watch by it just yet.
After that, the swell backs off, but we’ve got a few clean mornings, like Monday the 27th morning with a 4ft south swell and glassy conditions, but it’s not the big one. The final week gets a bit bumpy, and the start of August looks pretty rough with strong onshore winds. There’s one last hopeful morning on Sunday the 2nd with a 5ft south swell and glassy conditions, but it’s not the same.
So, the one to circle is that glassy Sunday morning of the 26th – that’s the expert session. The earlier Sunday and Monday mornings are the best for the everyday surfer.
