The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Cudmirrah Reef over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this isn't a blockbuster period. We've got a very long stretch of small, inconsistent swell and tricky winds. The first real standout doesn't pop up until the morning of the 27th of August. Before that, you're looking at a lot of small, ordinary waves mixed with some poor conditions starting from the 23rd. The first couple of days, through the 24th and 25th, offer tiny, mostly forgettable surf. There's a glimmer on the morning of the 25th with glassy winds, but the swell is weak (combined energy of 122) and short period.
Now, for the best of what we've got.
The standout session looks like the morning of Thursday, the 29th of August. We are talkin' a glassy morning with a clean, workable 3ft swell out of the SSE with period around 9 seconds (combined energy of 233). This is that moment where the reef could actually start to show some shape, with virtually no wind to mess it up. The water temperature here is 63°, which is a touch warmer than the norm for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest suit, but it's still cool.
Another solid shout is the morning of the 31st of August. Early, it’s glassy again with a small but very long period groundswell of 2ft from the south, a period of 18 seconds (combined energy of 367). For a reef setup like this, that long period energy should wrap in and offer some surprisingly fun lines, even if the size is down. Keep in mind, with such a long period, the sets will feel a bit more powerful and spaced out, so it should be easy to get a position.
Also worth a mention, the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. Early clean conditions with a light cross-off shore breeze, and a 3ft south swell at 13 seconds (combined energy of 261). That's a solid, grovelly surf that will be super clean under that wind.
Later in the first week of September, the mornings of the 3rd and 4th offer something. On the 3rd, an almost 5ft southerly swell rolls in with offshore NNW winds (combined energy of 255). That's the biggest swell in the whole run, but the period is short at 7 seconds, meaning it could be a bit bouncy, though the offshore wind will certainly help.
The final week gets pretty skinny again with low energy (some readings well under 100) and poor winds, so don't count on much after the 5th of September.
Crowds can sometimes be an issue at Cudmirrah, but with such marginal consistency across the whole window, it likely won't be too packed. If you’re chasing good shape, zero in on those glassy mornings around the 29th and 31st. They're not pumping, but they are the true standouts in an otherwise quiet run.
Rusty.
