The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. For the next couple of weeks, Cudmirrah Reef is the only show in town, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The start is rough, but there’s some real promise later on if you’re patient.
Wednesday the 15th kicks off with a solid 8ft southerly swell, but the cross-shore wind has it looking a bit average. The wave energy is pumping at 1678, so there’s plenty of grunt, but it’s not clean. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are a write-off—small, choppy, and not worth paddling out. Saturday the 18th is even worse, with tiny waves and barely any energy.
Then we get a real turn. Sunday the 19th morning, the wind goes glassy, and we’ve got a clean 5ft swell from the east-northeast with a 10-second period. The energy is up at 543, and it’s looking sweet. This is the standout of the first week. Monday the 20th morning is also clean with a light offshore, 5ft and 567 energy—another solid option. Tuesday the 21st keeps it going with a clean, glassy morning session, 4ft and 352 energy. Wednesday the 22nd morning is also glassy, but the swell is dropping to 4ft. After that, the surf fades away through Thursday and Friday the 24th, with small, choppy junk.
Now, there’s a big gap of no real surf from Friday the 24th afternoon until Saturday the 26th morning. Then, on Saturday the 26th morning, a new swell rolls in: 6ft from the south, but it’s short-period at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. However, Sunday the 27th morning is the real highlight of the whole forecast. Glassy conditions, a 6ft south swell with a long 12-second period, and energy at 892. This is a proper groundswell, and for a reef setup like this, it should be absolutely firing. The 12-second period means nice, organised lines and longer waits between sets—easier to get out the back. Monday the 29th morning is still clean, but the swell has dropped to 4ft, and by Tuesday the 30th, it’s all over.
So, the pick of the bunch is Sunday the 27th morning at Cudmirrah Reef. Glassy conditions, solid waist-to-shoulder-high south groundswell, and that reef will handle the direction perfectly. Get in early.
Rusty.
