The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about this stretch for the next couple of weeks – and fair warning, it’s a slow burner. The first real chance to get wet isn’t until Sunday the 23rd, and after that, you’ll be waiting a long stretch before things clean up again.
Sunday morning the 23rd at Cudmirrah Reef gives you a tiny south swell of 2ft with a very long 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The wind is light NNE, cross-off, so the surface will be smooth. The combined swell energy is strong at 332, so there’s more push than the height suggests. Just know that long period on a reef can make it a bit straight, but the clean conditions are a big plus. Water’s about 63°,pretty average for this time of year, so you’ll still want the rubber.
Then it all goes quiet. From Sunday afternoon right through the week, it’s a mess of onshore wind and weak swell – not worth paddling out.
Your best bet is Sunday morning the 30th. Cudmirrah Reef turns glassy with a light NNE breeze, a 3ft south swell at 8 seconds, and combined energy of 234. It’s not huge, but the glassy surface makes it clean and enjoyable. Crowds are ‘sometimes’, so you might have company, but it won’t be packed.
Monday the 31st is also a winner – glass again in the morning with 3ft south swell at 9 seconds (216 energy), then a clean cross-off in the afternoon with 3ft north-east swell and a punchier 308 energy. That afternoon could be the better session.
Looking way out, Thursday morning the 3rd of September shows some real potential: a 4ft south groundswell with 11 seconds, light offshore from the northwest, and combined energy of 371. That’s the biggest, cleanest swell of the whole forecast. But it’s a long way off, so stay hopeful but cautious.
The real standouts are the glassy Sunday the 30th and the clean Monday the 31st. If that Thursday 3rd comes through, it might be the one to remember.
Rusty.
