Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the outlook for Cudmirrah Reef.
Straight up, the next week and a bit is a mixed bag. We’ve got some size coming, but the wind is a persistent problem. The early days are small and ordinary, with a real gap in quality surf. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus for any sessions.
Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th are a write-off – tiny 1 ft to 3 ft swell, and while the wind is light at times, it’s not blowing in a good way. A proper slow start. Sunday the 5th sees a jump in size to 8 ft from the south with a moderate cross-onshore breeze, making for choppy, poor conditions. Not recommended at all.
The surf stays up through Monday the 6th (7-7 ft) and Tuesday the 7th (6-6 ft), but the wind stays cross or cross-onshore, leaving the waves messy. Combined energy values are in the moderate range, but the quality just isn’t there. The pattern continues through Wednesday and Thursday the 8th and 9th, with more 7 ft to 8 ft swell from the SSE, but again the onshore wind kills it. Energy values get strong, but it’s all blown out. For these sizes and the reef nature, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle session.
Now, a little brighter spot. Friday the 10th is still marginal with 6 ft swell and light winds, but then we get to Saturday the 11th. The morning shows 4 ft from the SE with glassy conditions – that’s the standout of the first week. The water will likely stay clean, and the swell period of 10 seconds is decent. Crowds are possible here at Cudmirrah Reef, so keep that in mind. It’s your best chance for a clean wave in that first stretch, even if energy is low.
After that, it dries right up. Sunday the 12th through Wednesday the 15th morning sees a dramatic drop to tiny 0.7 ft to 2 ft swell. A real gap in the action. But hold on – Tuesday the 14th morning brings a very different story. A solid 12 ft south swell rolls in, with a 10-second period and light offshore winds (WNW at 15 km/h). The energy is massive and the conditions are clean and excellent. That’s the big one, folks. For experienced surfers only, as 12 ft is well into expert territory. The reef will handle that size well.
The rest of the 14th and the 15th onward, the wind turns fresh and cross or cross-onshore again, with the swell dropping quickly. Thursday the 16th onward is back to small, onshore slop, with nothing worth paddling out for. The energy drops to weak levels.
So, if you’re looking for the best on offer: Get up early on Saturday the 11th for a glassy, clean 4 ft session, but keep an eye on Tuesday the 14th morning. That 12 ft south groundswell with offshore wind is the true standout for the whole outlook, but it’s only for the brave and skilled.
Rusty.
