The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a 16-day window for Cudmirrah Reef, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first couple of days are a write-off, but there’s a standout window that’ll get your heart pumping. Hang tight, because the good stuff is worth waiting for.
Right now, Friday the 17th, it’s flat and ugly. Cross-on wind, no energy to speak of – just a sad little 3ft SSE swell with a weak 5-second period. The combined energy is a measly 78, so don’t bother paddling out. Saturday the 18th morning is glassy, but the swell is tiny at 2ft from the south, period 10 seconds, and energy just 105. It’s surfable but ordinary.
Then Sunday the 19th morning – this is the one. The wind goes glassy, and we get a solid 5ft ENE swell with an 11-second period. The combined energy jumps to 717, which is moderate to strong. That’s a proper groundswell, and with clean conditions, this reef will be firing. The swell direction is ENE, which is close to the optimum SE direction, so it’ll wrap in nicely. This is advanced-only territory, and it’s very consistent, so expect a few heads out. Monday the 20th keeps the run going with a 5ft to 5ft ENE swell, clean offshore winds, and energy in the 600-700 range – another solid day.
The good stuff fades after that. Tuesday the 21st morning is glassy with 4ft ENE swell, but energy drops to 343. Wednesday the 22nd has a clean 3ft to 4ft swell, but it’s nothing special. From Thursday the 23rd through to the end of July, it’s a mix of small, weak swells, onshore winds, and poor conditions. The combined energy stays below 250 most days, and periods are short. August 1st shows a bit of a pulse with a 4ft S swell, 12-second period, and energy at 368, but the wind is cross-on and choppy, so it’s a no-go.
The standout is Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th – that’s your best bet. Clean, glassy mornings, solid ENE groundswell, and plenty of energy. Get on it.
Rusty.
