The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Cudmirrah Reef has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, it’s a slow start, folks. The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 14th is flat with poor conditions, and Wednesday the 15th brings a pulse of 8ft SSW swell, but the cross-shore wind and short 8 second period will make it a messy beast. That’s one for the experts only, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty. A lot of chop and not much shape. The combined energy is a massive 1646 (strong to very strong) but the quality is just not there.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are still small and messy, with the wind swinging onshore. The surf is basically a no-go until the weekend. Saturday the 18th is flat and weak. Sunday the 19th shows a pulse of 4ft ENE swell, but it’s a bit of a gamble with the wind.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 20th of July is the first real standout. The swell is 5ft from the ENE at 10 seconds, combined energy is 517 (moderate), and the wind is a glassy offshore from the west. That’s the kind of morning you get out of bed early for. Expect clean, shaped-up waves at Cudmirrah Reef. The water temp is about 64°F, which is bang on average for this time of year.
Tuesday the 21st is also promising with glassy morning conditions and 4ft ENE swell. The wind is light, so it’ll be clean. Not a monster, but a solid, fun option.
The real highlight of the whole forecast window is the period from Thursday the 23rd through to Sunday the 26th. The swell is around 6ft to 5ft from the east, with a decent 12 second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is consistently in the 800-900 range (strong). The wind is cross-offshore or glassy, meaning the reef will be clean and the waves will have some punch. The 12-second period will give long, clean lines ideal for this reef. Crowds are possible, but for a reef break this consistent, it’s worth sharing the water.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are particularly good. Saturday morning shows 5ft E swell with a cross-offshore wind, and Sunday morning is glassy with 5ft E swell. That’s as good as it gets for this stretch.
The last few days of the month (Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th) taper off to 3ft to 2ft, but the wind is still favourable, so there will be clean, small waves for the longboard or a fish.
The standout: The best on offer is definitely the window from Thursday the 23rd through Sunday the 26th. The combination of 5-6ft E swell, 12 second period, and clean cross-offshore or glassy wind is a proper run of surf. The 5ft glassy morning on Sunday the 26th is the pick of the bunch.
Rusty.
