Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cudmirrah Reef over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and we’ve got a mixed bag coming up for Cudmirrah Reef. This is a reef break, advanced level, and it’s very consistent, exposed to the SE, with an optimum swell from the SE. The water temp is sitting around 63°F, which is pretty much average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
Alright, so we start off on Wednesday the 8th, and honestly, it’s not much to write home about. We’ve got a 7ft swell from the SE, period 10 seconds, but the wind is cross-onshore from the south, and the energy is strong but messy (1194). The forecast calls it marginal, and I’d agree – it’s not the day to get excited.
Thursday the 9th hangs in there with a 5ft dropping to a 5ft SE swell, but the wind is cross to cross-onshore, and conditions are average at best. Still waiting for a proper window.
Then – and this is where things lift – Friday morning the 10th is our first real standout. The swell is 5ft from the SE with a 9-second period. The wind goes glassy (5 km/h from the WSW). That is clean as a whistle. The wave energy is moderate (406), and it says “expect good surf conditions.” For an advanced reef break, this is prime: shoulder-high, glassy, and the direction is spot-on. Get on it.
The rest of Friday afternoon fades with cross-on wind, and Saturday the 11th brings a smaller 3ft swell in the morning with offshore NW wind at 6 mph, so clean but small. The afternoon sees a 2ft swell with a nice 11-second period from the ESE, cross-off wind, and clean conditions – surfable but not a standout.
Sunday the 12th onward drops off hard. The swell collapses to 2ft and smaller, with moderate to fresh cross-off winds and very low combined energy (down to 22). That kicks off a dry spell that lasts through to Tuesday the 14th. There’s a gap of a few days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, we get a little pulse on Wednesday the 15th. The morning is 5ft from the south but with a short 5-second period – not much push. But the Wednesday afternoon is worth watching: 8ft from the south, period 7 seconds, with a light cross-off wind and clean conditions. The wave energy is solid (672). This is the second standout. At 8ft, it’s expert territory here. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but for a reef break, the power is there.
Thursday the 16th looks blown out with onshore wind from the SSE at 19-22 mph and 7-8ft swell – that’s messy and not for paddling. Friday the 17th stays poor with onshore wind. Saturday the 18th sees another 8ft pulse from the south and SSE, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy, not ideal. That setup could be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 20th is another one to circle. The morning is glassy – zero wind from the east – with a 6ft SE swell and an 11-second period. The wave energy is strong (874) and “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a proper clean groundswell, but the longer period (11 seconds) means it could be a bit too straight for this reef, so it might not stand up as well. Still, glassy and chest-to-head high is hard to ignore.
After that, the energy tails off into the 22nd and 23rd with small waves below 3ft. The 23rd Thursday afternoon is down to 2ft and not worth it.
So, the best two sessions are Friday morning the 10th (glassy, 5ft SE) and Wednesday afternoon the 15th (clean, 8ft S for the experts). Monday the 20th morning is promising but slightly less certain because of the longer period.
Stay stoked, and watch the wind.
Rusty.
