Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Forster Beach.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag. The real standout window is a little further out, so you’ll need some patience. There’s a decent pulse of energy building through the first week, but the wind and conditions are going to keep things messy for most of it. The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is only a touch warmer than average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
We start off on Saturday, 4th July. The morning has a clean 5ft swell out of the SSW, with a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s surfable, but the energy is moderate (537), and the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak. By the afternoon the wind swings, making things lumpy. Sunday sees the swell building – 7ft on the Sunday morning, but with a strong 12 mph cross-off wind and rain, it’s not going to be pretty. The energy jumps up (1219), but the conditions are marginal. Sunday afternoon gets even messier with 10ft and fresh onshore wind. Monday and Tuesday are big – 10ft to 12ft – but again, strong winds and rain spoil the party. This is expert territory size-wise, but the quality just isn’t there.
The first hint of something worthwhile comes on Friday, 10th July. The morning shows 8ft swell from the SSE, with a 11-second period and a whisper-light WSW breeze at only 3 mph. The conditions are clean and the energy is solid (1340). This is the best session in the first week for anyone with experience. It’s still a big wave for a beginner, though.
After Friday, the surf drops off fast. Saturday, 11th July, is a small 5ft, and by Sunday it’s under 3ft. The period drops, the energy fades, and we go into a quiet spell. From Sunday 12th July right through to Wednesday 15th July, there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for – we’re talking 3ft or less. The 15th shows a long-period spike (21 seconds) but with only 0.7ft of height, that’s just a ghost.
Now, here’s where it gets proper interesting. On Saturday, 18th July, the swell starts filling back in. The afternoon brings a clean 7ft from the SSW, with a light breeze and moderate energy (542). That’s a solid, surfable wave.
But the real standout is Sunday, 19th July. We’ve got a massive 15ft southerly swell with a long 11 to 12-second period. The combined energy is off the charts (5110 and 5839). The wind is offshore from the WSW at 12 mph. That is a big, clean, powerful groundswell. This is for experienced surfers only – it will be well overhead and pumping. For the crew that can handle it, this is the day to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but the picture looks promising.
Rusty.
