Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s coming up for us.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. Friday morning (July 3rd) has a tiny 2ft ENE windswell with a short 7-second period, and the water is a mild 69°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That early session is pretty much a write-off. The real action doesn’t start building until Saturday morning.
Saturday July 4th sees things wake up. Forster Beach gets a clean 4ft SSW swell with a 7-second period and light SW winds. The combined energy is moderate at 397, and while the conditions are clean, it's nothing to write home about just yet. Saturday afternoon gets a bigger 5ft S swell, but the period jumps to 11 seconds and the wind goes cross-shore, making it a bit messy.
Sunday July 5th is where it starts to get serious. First light on Sunday brings a solid 8ft S swell with a 12-second period and clean cross-offshore winds from the SSW. The energy is strong at 1685. This is proper groundswell, but at over 8ft, it’s really only for the experienced crew. The long period means it might wall up a bit at this beach, but for the right surfer, it’s got some grunt.
The stand-out session, the one you should circle on the calendar, is Tuesday July 7th afternoon. Forster Beach will see a powerful 10ft SSE groundswell with an 11-second period, clean cross-offshore winds, and a massive energy reading of 4118. That is a serious push of water. It’s big, it’s clean, and it’s an expert-only wave. If you’re not confident in that size, give it a miss, but for the big-wave chargers, this is the moment.
After that peak, we get a slow decline through the end of the first week, with decent but not spectacular 5ft to 7ft swells and clean winds. Then there’s a lull. From Sunday July 12th through to Tuesday July 14th, the surf gets small and weak, with energy dropping down into double digits and poor onshore winds. It’s a few days of flatness.
The pattern picks up again on Wednesday July 15th. The morning brings a 8ft SSW swell with a 10-second period and light winds, giving a clean, solid session. But the real standout for the second week is Thursday July 16th morning. The swell is a massive 12ft from the south with a very long 13-second period, and the combined energy is an incredible 4691. However, the forecast says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That’s the kind of size that shuts down a beach break, so while the numbers are staggering, it’s more of a spectacle than a go.
The forecast wraps up with one last pulse on Friday July 17th afternoon, with a 10ft SSW swell and clean winds, before it all gets blown out by strong southerlies on Saturday the 18th.
Best bet for a good, solid paddle without it being terrifying? I’d say Wednesday July 15th morning. That 8ft SSW swell with light wind and clean conditions hits the sweet spot between size and manageability.
Rusty.
