The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. It’s Rusty.
First up, Forster Beach. It’s a fairly exposed beginner-friendly spot, and for the next week or so, it’s going to be a bit of a mixed bag. The water temperature is sitting right around average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
The first few days are looking pretty average. Friday through Sunday, we’ve got a moderate east-southeast swell pushing in, but the wind is mostly cross-onshore, so the surf will be choppy and messy. Swell heights are around 5 ft to 6 ft, but the period is short—only 7 to 8 seconds—so it’s not going to have much push. The combined energy is moderate, ranging from 345 to 592, but that doesn’t mean much when the wind is ruining the face. The surfline will be pretty ordinary.
Sunday morning, the swell jumps to 10 ft with a 10-second period, energy reading 1772, so there’s a lot of water moving. But it’s cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s not a good time. That’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Monday and Tuesday the swell backs off a bit, 5 ft to 7 ft, and the wind lightens up, but it’s still cross-onshore or cross-shore. The energy readings drop to 501 to 1013, still moderate. The waves will be surfable but not great.
Now, the real standout window starts Thursday, 23rd July. We get a morning of light cross-offshore wind, and by afternoon it’s glassy. The swell is small, only 3 ft from the east-northeast with a 9-second period, and the energy is low (170 to 208). But for a clean, small wave session, this is the best of the early run. The break won’t be crowded, but it’s a fairly consistent spot so you’ll see a few others.
Then, Friday 24th July, a big south swell hits. Morning sees 12 ft at 10 seconds, energy a massive 2302, and the wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean. But that’s too big for beginners—this is strictly for experts. The break is a beach, so the long period (10 seconds) will make it a bit walled-up and tricky. Still, it’s the most powerful day of the whole run.
Saturday 25th July is your best bet for most surfers. Morning has 7 ft south swell with a 10-second period, light cross-offshore wind, and energy at 820. The conditions are clean, the size is manageable for intermediates, and the break is fairly consistent. It’s not going to be a circus, but expect some locals.
Sunday 26th July, another big south swell (10 ft) with cross-offshore wind, but the energy is huge at 3388. Again, experts only. The quality is there but the size is intimidating.
The second week sees a drop in size. From Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th, we’ve got 4 ft to 5 ft south swell, mostly clean, with light winds. The energy is moderate (418 to 843). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Thursday 30th and Friday 31st, the swell goes tiny and the wind turns onshore, so it’s pretty much a washout.
The final day, Saturday 1st August, has a strong breeze and messy conditions, so don’t bother.
In summary, the standout is Saturday 25th July morning for the best combo of size, clean conditions, and manageable waves. The other highlight is Thursday 23rd July afternoon for glassy, clean small waves. Friday 24th and Sunday 26th are for experts only.
Rusty.
