The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Forster Beach. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the backend of this outlook is where the real firepower shows up. Water temp is sitting unremarkable for the time of year, nothing wild to report.
First up, Tuesday the 21st of July, that’s your first real chance to get wet. Tuesday morning, the swell is 5 ft from the ENE with a 10-second period, and you’ve got a clean cross-off breeze from the NNW at 3 mph. Clean lines, moderate energy (577). It’s not huge, but it’s clean and rideable for a beginner.
Wednesday the 22nd of July morning is a standout. The swell drops a little to 4 ft from the ENE, but the wind goes glassy from the WNW at 3 mph. That’s a major positive – glassy conditions mean smooth, clean faces. Combined energy is moderate (340). This is the best morning of the first week for a relaxed paddle.
Then we hit a few quiet days. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th have some swell but the winds are marginal. Friday afternoon the 24th sees a pulse of 6 ft from the S (9-second period) with a clean cross-off breeze from the SSW at 9 mph, and energy jumps to 659. That’s a solid afternoon session, fun and punchy.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th have consistent 5 ft to 7 ft S swell with longer 12-second periods, but the winds stay cross-off and the energy is moderate to strong (787 to 1033). The swell is solid, but it’s a bit messy under the hood – not a stand-out, but surfable.
Now, the big news. From Wednesday the 30th of July, we get a serious pulse. Thursday morning the 30th, the swell hits 10 ft from the SSW (10-second period) with a strong offshore wind from the W at 12 mph. The combined energy is massive (3303). That’s excellent, clean, and powerful – but at 10 ft, this is for experienced surfers only. Thursday afternoon, the swell jumps to 13 ft from the S (12-second period), energy at 7170, but it’s predicted to be too big for this break. Same story for Friday the 31st (12–13 ft, S, 13-second period, huge energy 4732–8484) and Saturday the 1st of August (12 ft from S, 11-second period, 5049). This is a serious swell event, but it’s going to be messy and intimidating for most. Kite surfers might have a field day here.
The real sweet spot comes Sunday the 2nd of August morning. Swell drops to 8 ft from the S, 11-second period, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. Combined energy is solid (1295). This is the pick of the whole outlook – solid, clean, and still manageable for intermediate surfers. Then Monday the 3rd of August morning keeps the run going: 6 ft from the SSE, 12-second period, light cross-off breeze from the SW at 6 mph, energy 1169. Very good, clean conditions.
Tuesday the 4th of August morning winds down with 5 ft from the SSE, 11-second period, glassy conditions with calm wind (0 mph), and moderate energy (596). A nice, clean close to the period.
Overall, the first week is patchy with a few clean windows, but the second week delivers a massive, powerful swell that’s best left to the experts. The true standout is Sunday the 2nd of August morning – that’s the one to circle on the calendar. Forster Beach is a beginner-friendly spot, so when the swell gets over 8 ft, it’s really only for the crew that knows what they’re doing. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t sleep on that Sunday morning.
Rusty.
