The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for Forster Beach over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it’s a bit of a flat and frustrating run for the most part, but there are a couple of windows where it might just come together.
The pattern is pretty messy. We’ve got plenty of swell lines on the charts, but the wind is all over the shop – either onshore, cross-onshore, or too strong to keep things tidy. The first proper chance to paddle out doesn’t arrive until Monday morning the 24th of August, and even then it’s marginal. For a long stretch from now until then, we’re looking at a gap of a couple of days with hardly a wave you’d want to sit on.
Forster Beach itself gets a mix of swells, but the direction is rarely spot on. The water temp here is sitting at about 66°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Now, for the highlights. The first standout to keep an eye on is Wednesday morning the 26th of August. We’ve got a 5 ft swell out of the NE with a short period of 8 seconds, but the key here is a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. That’ll clean things right up. The combined energy is moderate at 364, but the wind makes it surfable, especially for the beginners this spot is known for. Just watch out for the afternoon – the wind swings and it turns to rubbish.
The absolute best on offer, though, is Thursday afternoon the 3rd of September. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a bit further out, so keep your expectations in check, but the potential is there. We’re looking at a 3 ft groundswell out of the S, with a very long 12-second period and absolutely zero wind – glassy conditions. That clean energy will wrap in nicely. The combined energy is strong at 564, so there’ll be plenty of push. For a beach break like Forster, that long period can sometimes make the waves a bit straight, but with glass like that, you’ll take it over a choppy mess any day.
Other than that, there’s a half-decent window on Monday morning the 31st of August with a 4 ft S swell and glassy conditions, but the tide could be a factor. The long-range stuff for the 1st of September and the 3rd of September are the real whispers you want to listen to.
Honestly, for the next week and a half, you’d be better off checking the wind forecast before you even bother waxing up. But keep your chin up – the longer-range charts are showing a pulse of energy that could deliver a tidy session if the stars align.
Stay keen.
Rusty.
