The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Forster Beach. Let’s be real—this stretch of coast is in a bit of a funk for the next week, but there’s a couple of moments that’ll get your blood pumping if you’re patient.
The water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, nothing to write home about but not a shock to the system. Forster Beach itself is a fairly exposed beginner-friendly beachie, and the swell direction has been swinging around, but the good news is the optimum swell direction is SE and we do get some of that coming through.
Right now, the first decent chance is Thursday, August 27th morning. Swell hangs around 5ft from the south, with a period of 9 seconds—a bit short, but it’s not terrible. The wind is a light cross-off from the SSW at 3 mph, keeping things clean. The combined energy is moderate at 493. It’s not a stand-out session, but it’s a surfable window.
Now, Friday, August 28th morning is the first real standout. Glassy—zero wind from the SW—and a solid 5ft south swell with a 12-second period. That’s quality groundswell energy, and the combined energy bumps up to 741. For a beach break, the long period might make it a bit straight, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean and fun. This is the best on offer in the first week.
After that, things get messy with onshore winds and choppy conditions until we hit Monday, September 1st morning. Another standout: 4ft from the south, but now the period is 14 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 711. The wind is light cross-off from the NNW at 6 mph, so it’s clean. This is a quality long-period groundswell that will wrap in nicely.
Then Tuesday, September 2nd morning is worth a mention—clean, offshore wind from the WNW at 3 mph, with 3ft south swell at 12 seconds. It’s smaller, but glassy and clean. The combined energy is 277, so it’s not a powerhouse, but it’s a fun, small-wave session.
There’s a gap from the 2nd afternoon through to the 4th, but by Thursday, September 4th morning a new pulse shows: 5ft south swell, 7-second period, cross-off wind from the SSW at 9 mph. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit weak, but it’s clean. The combined energy is 436.
The last real hope is Sunday, September 6th morning—4ft south swell, 11-second period, clean cross-off wind from the NW at 6 mph. Combined energy is 302. It’s a solid, clean morning for a paddle.
The standout sessions are Friday, August 28th morning and Monday, September 1st morning—both offer clean, longer-period south swell with light winds. Forster Beach can get crowded, so if you’re keen, get in early.
