The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what we’ve got here for Forster Beach. The water’s sitting at about 66°F, which is pretty much right on average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. The next two weeks are a mixed bag, with a lot of ordinary to poor conditions, but there are a few windows that’ll get you out there.
First up, this Friday morning, the 21st of August, you’ll find some small, surfable waves. Swell is coming from the NE at about 3ft with a short 6-second period, not much energy behind it (70). The wind is a light cross-offshore out of the SW, so it’ll be clean. There’s a bit of a gap after this, with Saturday and Sunday looking pretty average—Sunday morning has a bigger 3ft S swell at 12 seconds (290 energy), but the wind is onshore out of the east, so it’s messy. Sunday afternoon pushes up to about 5ft, but that onshore wind cranks up to 15 mph, making it a write-off.
The first real standout comes on Wednesday morning, the 26th of August. The wind turns offshore from the west at 15 mph, and the swell is a solid 5ft from the ENE with an 8-second period, giving you 334 energy. It’s clean, and the waves have some push. This is the best call for the first week.
Then Thursday morning, the 27th of August, is a beauty. The wind is glassy out of the south, and the swell is about 3ft from the south at 12 seconds—that’s a long-period groundswell, with 594 energy. It’s going to be clean and lined up, a real treat for the more experienced crew. Friday morning, the 28th of August, also looks glassy with a 5ft S swell at 11 seconds (588 energy). Two mornings in a row of glassy conditions—that’s a rare treat.
After that, it drops off again. The 29th of August has a clean morning with offshore wind, but the swell is smaller at about 3ft, and the energy is dropping. The following week is mostly poor, with small swells and onshore winds, though the 3rd of September morning has a 3ft S swell at 12 seconds (404 energy) with a light crosswind, but it’s marginal.
For the long-range, the 5th of September Saturday afternoon has a bigger 6ft SSE swell with 790 energy, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s pretty messy. Kite surfers might find it more interesting than paddle surfers that day.
The undeniable standout is Thursday morning, the 27th of August: glassy wind, 3ft south groundswell at 12 seconds, and 594 energy. That’s the session to pencil in.
