The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Forster Beach has cooking for the next couple weeks.
First thing, the water temp is about normal for this time of year. The week ahead has some ups and downs, but there’s a clean window coming if you’re willing to wait.
We kick off Thursday, July 16th, with a 5ft swell from the S, but it’s got a short period of 8 seconds and a cross-shore wind making it choppy. Not worth the paddle. The whole weekend, July 18th and 19th, sees the swell building to 8ft from the E, but the wind is cross-on and messy. The energy is high – hitting 1594 (strong to very strong) on Sunday morning – but the chop will ruin it. This is more of a kite session than a traditional surf.
Here’s the standout. Tuesday morning, July 21st. The wind swings to a light NNW, which is cross-off, and the sea cleans up. The swell is a clean 5ft from the ENE with a 10-second period, carrying moderate energy (608). It’s not huge, but it’s lined up. This is your best bet.
Then, Wednesday morning, July 22nd, is a gem. The wind drops to glassy, dead calm, with a 4ft ENE swell. Energy is 345, and the conditions are going to be perfect. Small but beautiful.
After that, the swell drops fast. From Thursday, July 23rd, we’re looking at waves under 4ft, and by July 25th, it’s down to 3ft. The wind is clean, but there’s no size. The late part of the month – July 28th, 29th, and 30th – brings a long-period S swell (16 seconds, 14 seconds), but the height is tiny, around 1ft to 2ft. That long period might make it break too straight at a beach break, so keep expectations low.
The final days, July 30th and 31st, see a small NE swell, but it’s just surfable, not special. The clean offshore winds won’t make up for the lack of push.
In short, the best surf on offer is Tuesday morning, July 21st, and Wednesday morning, July 22nd. Get out there early, because the rest of the run is flat.
Rusty.
