The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming for Forster Beach.
It’s a rough start, mate. The first few days are a write-off with rain showers and a strong cross-onshore wind making a mess of things. The swell is there, but it’s ugly and choppy. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are not worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong, climbing up, but it’s all wind-affected junk.
Now, Monday the 20th is where things start to look up. The morning is a beauty – glassy conditions with a light breeze, and a solid 7ft swell from the east with a 10-second period. The energy is strong. The water temp is about 67°, which is average for this time of year. This is the standout of the first week: clean, fun waves for a beginner-friendly spot. It’s not too big, and the glassy wind means it’ll be smooth. The afternoon goes a bit onshore, so get it early.
Tuesday the 21st has a 5ft swell from the ENE with a light cross-offshore wind, keeping it clean. The crowd factor is likely, but the conditions are good for a surf.
After that, the swell drops off hard. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are small and weak. There’s a brief window on Thursday morning with a light offshore wind and a 2ft swell, but it’s tiny. Then on Thursday afternoon, a strong wind kicks up a 7ft swell from the south, but it’s short period and messy.
Friday the 24th brings a better pulse of south swell, 8ft with a 9-10 second period. The morning is clean with a cross-offshore wind, and the energy is very strong. This is a good option for more experienced surfers, as it’s getting up there in size. The afternoon is a bit cross-shore, but still rideable.
Saturday the 25th starts glassy again with a 5ft south swell. It’s clean and fun. Sunday the 26th is similar, with a glassy 6ft south swell.
Looking further ahead, there’s a decent window on Monday the 27th. A moderate offshore wind and a 3ft south swell with a long 11-second period. The waves will be clean and lined up, but it’s small.
Then from Tuesday the 28th through Wednesday the 29th, the south swell cranks up again. Expect 8ft to 8ft from the SSW with strong energy. The wind is cross-offshore, keeping it clean, but this is expert territory – over 8ft for a beach break. It’s a bit too big for the beginners. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those days.
Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st see the swell drop back to 3ft-6ft, with clean conditions.
The real standout of the whole forecast, and it’s a long way out, is Saturday the 1st of August. The afternoon shows a massive 12ft swell from the NE, but it’s a very short period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is huge, but it’s predicted to be too big for this break. Keep an eye on that one, but don’t bank on it.
Then on Sunday the 2nd of August, the morning is glassy with a 7ft ENE swell. This is a promising one, but it’s two weeks away, so treat it with caution.
In summary, the best bets are Monday 20th July morning for clean, glassy 7ft east swell, and Friday 24th July morning for a bigger, clean 8ft south swell. For the second week, the Sunday 2nd August morning looks promising if it holds.
Rusty.
