G'day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Forster Beach has on offer over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, we’ve got a bit of a messy start. Monday morning at Forster Beach is looking pretty ordinary with a 10-foot SSE swell, but the wind is a cross-shore SSE breeze at 15 mph, so it’s choppy and the conditions are marginal. The combined swell energy is strong at 2341, but the rain and onshores are making it a tough paddle. This one’s for the hardcore locals only – beginners should stay well clear, as 10 feet is too big.
Tuesday morning, 7th July, is a serious standout. The swell jumps to 12 feet from the SSE, with a period of 11 seconds, giving it decent shape. The wind is a cross-offshore SSW breeze at 12 mph, so the face is clean. The energy is pumping at 3423. This is big, powerful surf – only for experienced surfers, and definitely not for beginners. The water temp is 68°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. Crowds are often here, so expect plenty of company if you’re keen.
Wednesday and Thursday see the swell drop back to the 8 to 10 feet range, with clean conditions thanks to cross-offshore SSW and S winds. The energy stays moderate to strong (1069 to 2063). Still good waves for those who know what they’re doing, but the peak of the run is definitely Tuesday.
Friday morning, 10th July, is another beauty. A 7 feet SE swell with a glassy offshore WSW breeze at just 3 mph. The energy is moderate at 873, and the waves will be clean as a whistle. This is a solid morning for a session.
After that, the surf fades. Saturday and Sunday (11th-12th July) see smaller 3 to 5 feet swells, with light winds but not much power. By Monday 13th July, it’s tiny – 1 feet with an offshore wind, but hardly worth paddling out for.
Then there’s a gap of a few days, but Tuesday 14th July picks up again with a 10 feet SSW swell and clean cross-offshore winds. By Wednesday 15th July, we get another standout: an 8 feet S swell with a light offshore W breeze at 6 mph. The energy is strong at 2018, and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This one is worth circling on the calendar.
After that, the end of the week and into the weekend (16th-21st July) gets messy with onshores, southerly winds, and lumpy conditions. Swells drop to 3 feet or less, and the energy is weak. From 17th to 19th July, there are strong winds and t-storms – the surf will be poor, and it looks more suited to kite surfing than paddling.
So, the two true standouts are Tuesday 7th July and Wednesday 15th July. Both offer solid, clean surf for experienced surfers. Beginners, steer clear of those big days and maybe look at the smaller Friday 10th July session instead.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on the sky.
