The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Forster Beach.
Right now, the surf is pretty average to poor. We’ve got a moderate cross-onshore wind blowing from the SSE at 12 mph, and the swell is a messy 6 ft from the ESE at a short 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is sitting at 681 (moderate). It’s choppy and not good for a paddle. The water temp is 19°, which is pretty normal for the time of year.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are still a write-off. The swell jumps up to 8 ft but it’s still a cross-onshore mess, and the wind is howling. The energy hits 1682 (strong) on Sunday morning, but it’s just not clean. On Monday, the swell drops to 7 ft and the wind backs off slightly, but it’s still cross-onshore, so it’s only marginal.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday morning, the 21st. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore from the N at 6 mph, and the swell settles to a clean 5 ft from the ENE with a 10-second period. The energy is 563 (moderate). The conditions will be clean, and it’s a good shout for a beginner-friendly wave. The afternoon though, turns back to a cross-on mess, so make it a morning session.
Wednesday morning, the 22nd, is another clean one. Light wind from the NW at 3 mph, a cross-offshore, and a smaller 4 ft swell from the ENE. The energy is 284 (moderate). It’s a small, clean wave for a cruise.
The standout in the whole 16-day window is probably Friday the 24th morning. The wind is a cross-offshore from the SW at 12 mph, and a solid 10 ft groundswell from the S rolls in with an 11-second period. That’s a strong energy reading of 1993 (very strong). This is a big, powerful swell, so it’s only for experienced surfers. The wind is clean, so the face should be good, but that’s a lot of water moving around. The afternoon stays big at 8 ft but turns a bit rougher.
Saturday the 25th morning is a real treat. The wind is light and offshore from the WSW at 3 mph, with a 5 ft S swell at 10 seconds. The energy is 450 (moderate). That’s clean, lined-up surf, and a good size for most.
Sunday the 26th morning is glassy. The wind is just a whisper from the WSW, and the swell is 4 ft from the S. The energy is 353 (moderate). The water will be like a mirror. This is your chance for a really smooth, fun session.
After that, the size drops off hard. Monday the 27th is tiny at 3 ft, and from Tuesday the 28th through Wednesday the 30th, it’s mostly under 3 ft with poor winds.
We get a little bump again on Thursday the 30th morning. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SSW at 9 mph, with a 3 ft swell from the SSW. The energy is 275 (moderate). It’s small but clean. The afternoon, however, is a write-off with a cross-on wind and a 2 ft, 18-second period swell that’s too long for a beach break.
The last week of the forecast is a bit of a mixed bag. The 31st and 1st of August are rain and onshore winds, the swell is a messy 3 ft to 6 ft, and it’s all poor. The 2nd of August is small and onshore again.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Friday the 24th morning for the big, clean swell, but it’s for experts only. For the everyday surfer, Saturday the 25th morning and Sunday the 26th morning are the real standouts with clean, fun-sized waves and light winds. Don’t waste your time on the first few days or the middle of the second week.
Rusty.
