The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Forster Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it's a bit of a slow start. The first few days are looking pretty ordinary, with some onshore and cross-shore breezes messing things up. We've got a bit of swell around, but the conditions just aren't coming together. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Sunday the 23rd is a write-off, with light rain and a light onshore breeze making for marginal surf. The combined energy is moderate (423), but the quality just isn't there. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are poor, with strong cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. The swell on Tuesday afternoon gets up to 6 ft from the NE, but with a short period of 6 seconds and that onshore wind, it's a mess.
We finally get a bit of a window on Wednesday the 26th morning. It's not a stand-out, but the wind swings cross-offshore from the WSW, cleaning up the 4 ft, 7-second NE swell. The combined energy is weak (217), but it's surfable. For the rest of that week, it's a bit of a mixed bag, with Thursday the 27th offering a 5 ft S swell but with a cross-shore wind. The energy is moderate (466), but the conditions are just marginal.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Friday the 28th morning is looking good. We've got a clean 4 ft S swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the WSW. The combined energy is moderate (481), and it's a proper surf. Saturday the 29th morning is even better. The wind goes light and offshore from the W, with a 4 ft SSE swell, a 10-second period, and a healthy combined energy of 636. The conditions are clean, and this is one of the best windows in the whole outlook.
The following week shows some promise too. On Monday the 31st of August, the morning looks like a ripper for the more experienced crew. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the S with a 12-second period, giving a strong combined energy of 1733. The wind is a light cross-shore from the NNE, so it'll be a bit bumpy, but that's a lot of water moving. At that size, it's getting into the "experts only" territory. Then, Tuesday the 1st of September is a real treat. The morning has a clean 4 ft S swell, 13-second period, and a light cross-offshore wind from the NW. The energy is solid (632). But the afternoon is the cream of the crop. The wind goes glassy, the swell drops to a clean 4 ft from the S, with a 12-second period and a moderate energy of 477. That's a glassy, clean afternoon session.
After that, the swell drops right off. From the 2nd of September onwards, we're looking at small, weak waves, mostly under 3 ft, with very low energy. The combined energy readings drop to 147 and below. There's a glassy morning on the 4th of September with a 1 ft, 15-second SSE swell, but that's barely a ripple. The 5th of September has a similar glassy morning with a 2 ft S swell, but again, it's tiny. The last few days are just flat and poor.
So, the standout sessions are clear: Saturday the 29th of August morning for the best combination of size and clean conditions, and Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon for that perfect, glassy, clean surf. Forster Beach can get crowded, so for those good windows, you'll want to be early.
Rusty.
