Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cowries over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up for Cowries over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at 65°, which is about 2° warmer than you’d normally expect this time of year – nothing crazy, but noticeable.
The window kicks off this Friday morning, July 10, with a solid 5ft SE swell and a 9-second period. The energy’s moderate (582), and with a light cross-off SSW breeze at 6 mph, the surf is clean and rideable. It’s a decent start, but the afternoon gets a bit wonky with cross-shore winds and a drop in quality.
Saturday morning, July 11, is the real standout early on. The swell drops to 4ft from the SE, but the wind goes glassy – NNW at 3 mph. The waves are clean, the energy is moderate (352), and it’s a perfect time for a beginner-friendly session. Crowds can show up sometimes, so get in early. The afternoon turns cross-on and choppy, so morning is the move.
Sunday, July 12, sees the swell drop to 2ft, and even though the wind is cross-off, there’s barely any energy (94). Monday and Tuesday, July 13–14, are flat – just tiny 0.7ft–1ft junk with no real push. You’re looking at a few days of nothing worth paddling for.
Then things shift. Wednesday, July 15, brings a building 7ft S swell in the morning, jumping to 10ft by afternoon, but the period is short (8 seconds) and the wind is fresh cross-off at 19 mph. The energy is strong (744 morning, 1122 afternoon), but it’s messy and marginal for Cowries. Not the best.
Thursday, July 16, is a solid call. The swell sits at 8ft from the SSE, short period (7 seconds), but the wind is light cross-off and the energy is strong (709). The morning is clean and offers very good waves, but at this size, it’s better for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy.
Now, the real standout is Friday, July 17. The morning shows a 12ft ESE swell with a 11-second period and a light cross-off breeze. The energy is massive (5126), and while the forecast says the swell might be too big for this break, the afternoon session is rated excellent for experienced surfers with 10ft waves and good energy (2142). If you’re a pro, this is the best on offer.
Saturday, July 18, keeps the energy high with 8ft ESE swell in the morning, light cross-off winds, and very good conditions. The energy is 1269. The afternoon turns cross-shore, so morning is key.
By Sunday, July 19, the swell is 8ft from the ESE with a long 12-second period, but the wind is cross-shore, making it a bit messy. The energy is still strong (1759), but it’s not the cleanest.
The second week settles down. Monday, July 20, brings 4ft from the ESE with light cross-off winds – clean and good. Tuesday, July 21, sees 4ft–4ft with offshore winds, good for a session. Wednesday, July 22, keeps the trend with 4ft–3ft, clean and offshore. Thursday, July 23, is windier with fresh offshore gusts, but the swell is still around 4ft. Friday, July 24, morning is the best of the late run: 5ft from the E with light offshore winds, very good energy (873), and clean conditions. Saturday, July 25, morning is 5ft from the ESE with light cross-off winds, but the afternoon turns cross-on and choppy.
Overall, the best are Saturday morning, July 11, for the glassy clean beginner-friendly waves, and Friday, July 17, afternoon for the big swell action for experts. The rest of the week has some fun but nothing to write home about.
Rusty.
