The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Cowries. Gotta be honest, it’s a slow burner. The start is flat, there’s a proper lull, and we’re all waiting for that one pulse of energy to sort things out. Don’t be in a rush to grab your board for the first few days.
The opening stretch, from the 19th through the 24th, is pretty grim. Tiny, weak swell, mostly under 3ft, with winds all over the shop—cross-shore, cross-on, a bit of chop. The combined energy is weak, mostly under 150. There’s a flicker on the 21st morning when it’s glassy-clean with a light cross-off breeze, but the swell is only about 3ft and the energy is a paltry 59. You could get a wave, but you’d be scratching around. This is a genuine flat spell, and it lasts nearly a week.
We get a little something on the 25th. The morning brings 4ft of NE swell with a clean cross-off wind. The energy picks up to a moderate 173, and it’s surfable, but it’s not good. That afternoon and the 26th morning are similar—small, clean, but unremarkable. Then the 26th afternoon turns sour: heavy rain, a fresh 35 km/h SSW cross-off wind, and the swell jumps to 5ft, but the energy is still moderate at 291. It’s rough.
Now, here’s the main event. The standout is the morning of the 27th. The swell bumps up to a solid 8ft from the SSE with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 1339. And the wind? Light, cross-off, and clean. This is proper groundswell with real muscle. But at 8ft, this is strictly for the experts. It’s a reef and point, and this is the kind of swell that can hold up and produce some serious waves. The afternoon backs off to about 7ft and gets a little cross-on, so the morning window is the one.
After that, the swell eases but hangs around. The 28th is a good one, with 5ft from the SSE/SE and clean offshore winds all day. Energy is a solid 333 and 360. That’s a fun day for the average surfer. The 29th and 30th get big again, up to 10ft on the 29th afternoon, but the winds are stronger and more cross-off, making it more of a wrestling match. That 10ft is a lot of water moving, and with a fresh breeze, it’ll be challenging. The 31st settles back to around 4-5ft, clean in the morning, but the afternoon gets a bit of cross-chop.
And then, keep your eyes on the morning of the 1st of September. That’s the second standout. The swell is a clean 5ft from the SE, but the period jumps to 12 seconds—that’s long-period groundswell. And the wind is glass. Absolutely glassy. Energy is a strong 733. This is prime Cowries. This is the kind of session that gets the heart racing. The long period should groom some beautiful, peeling lines along the reef and point. This is probably the pick of the entire window for quality and size combined.
The last couple of days in the forecast fade out again. The 2nd and 3rd have some small, clean waves, around 3ft and 2ft, but the energy drops back to moderate and weak levels. It just winds down.
So, to wrap up: the first week is a write-off. The 27th morning is for the big-wave riders only. The 28th is a solid, all-round good day. And that glassy 5-footer on the 1st of September is the one that’s got me excited. It’s a while away, so don’t make plans yet, but it’s showing all the right signs.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
