The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks at Cowries.
We’re looking at a pretty slow start. The surf is tiny and the conditions are just ordinary through the first week. The real action doesn’t kick off until the very end of the window, and it’s a serious one, so hang tight.
The first few days, from Saturday the 18th through to the end of the week, are a bit of a write-off. We’ve got small, weak swell – mostly under 3ft – with a combined energy that barely gets into three figures (119, 111). Winds are all over the place, cross or cross-off, and the quality is just not there. There’s a gap of several days with nothing worth shouting about.
Sunday morning, 19 July is the first real standout. The swell jumps up to 6ft from the ENE, with a solid 11-second period and a combined energy of 932. That’s moderate wave energy, and the wind is a light cross-off from the SSW, so it’s clean. This is the best of the near-term – a proper, fun-sized wave with good shape. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
After that, we drop back into small, marginal surf for the rest of the week. Monday 20th sees 5ft ENE swell, but the wind swings around to a cross-on in the afternoon, making it choppy. There’s a brief moment on Wednesday 22nd morning with clean 3ft waves and a light offshore from the west, but it’s small. The energy is weak (162). Thursday 23rd afternoon gets a spike of 7ft from the south, but with a short 8-second period and cross-on wind, it’s messy.
Now, for the long-range stuff. Keep your eye on Friday 31 July. This is a big one. The forecast shows a massive 13ft south swell rolling in at 12 seconds, with a combined energy of 8078 – that’s very strong wave energy. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean. But here’s the thing: this is a reef and point break, and at 13ft, it’s going to be too big for most people. This is strictly for experts. The long period (12 seconds) means it’ll have plenty of power and some nice, long lines, but the size is the main factor. It’s a promising but less certain call this far out, but if it comes together, it’ll be a session to remember.
Saturday 1 August morning is still looking strong, with 8ft from the SSE and a light cross-off wind. Excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The combined energy is 1553 – strong. By Sunday 2 August morning, it’s 12ft from the south, glassy, but again, that’s too big for this break, so only for the brave.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Sunday morning, 19 July for the everyday surfer, and Friday 31 July for the big-wave chargers. Everything else is just small or ordinary.
Rusty.
