Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for Cowries. It’s a reef and point set-up, fairly exposed to the swell, and you’ve got a consistent little break that works for beginners.
Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus.
Now, the forecast gets going from Monday, July 6th. The morning kicks off with light rain and a cross-off wind from the south at 12 mph. The swell’s coming in at 8 ft from the SSE with a 10-second period. That's a solid amount of juice, but the combined swell energy is pumping at 1232 – that’s a moderate to strong energy reading. The problem is, the conditions are described as marginal, and the tide might not play ball. Not the cleanest start. That afternoon the wind picks up to 16 mph, so it’s not getting any better for a proper session.
Tuesday the 7th brings a step up in size. Morning sees 10 ft from the SSE, and the energy jumps to 3636. Still cross-off wind, but the wave comment says it’s marginal. By Tuesday afternoon, things get interesting – the swell hits 12 ft from the SE with an 11-second period. The energy is through the roof at 4837, and the comment says wind and tide are actually favorable. But hold up, 12 ft is getting seriously big. For a reef and point like this, that’s expert territory only. Beginners need to sit this one out.
Wednesday the 8th drops back to 8 ft in the morning, then 7 ft in the afternoon. Still cross-off wind, but the conditions are marked as marginal. Nothing to get overly excited about.
Thursday the 9th sees the swell drop to 6 ft in the morning from the ESE with an 11-second period. The wind is a light 9 mph cross-off. The comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” That’s a standout window right there. The energy is 863, which is moderate, but with that period and clean conditions, this is a prime time to get out there. The afternoon drops to 6 ft but the period shortens to 9 seconds.
Friday the 10th, morning has 6 ft from the SE, 9-second period, and light cross-off wind at 6 mph. The energy is 509. The comment says good surf. Another solid morning. The afternoon gets a bit tricky with cross-shore wind.
From Saturday the 11th onward, things taper off fast. The swell drops below 3 ft, and the wind goes messy. You're looking at poor surf conditions through the weekend and into the next week. On the 12th of July the swell is down to 2 ft, energy at 93 – it’s weak. Then from the 13th to the 15th, we’re in a flat spell with very small swell. There’s a glimmer on the 14th with a 3 ft southerly swell, but the period is only 8 seconds and the conditions are ordinary.
Then comes the 16th of July – Thursday – and the swell jumps back up to 10 ft from the south, 10-second period, and 2758 energy. But it’s marked marginal again. Not the one.
Now, if you’re looking for the real standout, you have to go to Friday the 17th of July. That morning, Cowries gets hit with a massive 15 ft swell from the south, with a 13-second period. The combined energy is a whopping 9636. That is very very strong. Wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-off, and the comment says wind and tide are favorable. But be real – 15 ft at a reef and point is strictly for the experts. This is huge, powerful groundswell. The afternoon stays big at 12 ft with 4956 energy. If you’re a capable charger, that Friday is the call. For everyone else, it’s a spectator day.
Saturday the 18th has a nice drop to 6 ft from the SSE, with glassy conditions in the morning. The energy is 720. That’s a fun, clean morning for intermediate surfers. The afternoon gets messy with cross-onshore wind.
After that, from the 19th right through to the 21st, it’s back to small, weak swell with strong offshore winds. The 21st has a weird one – a 1 ft swell from the SSE but with a super long 20-second period. That energy reads 356. It’s clean, but it’s tiny. You’d be hunting for scraps.
So, to wrap it up: your best bets are the morning of Thursday the 9th for clean, good waves, and the morning of Friday the 17th for the big stuff if you’re an expert. The weekend in between is mostly flat, and next week looks ordinary. The gaps of poor or no surf from the 11th to the 15th are a real bummer, but then that 17th comes in like a freight train. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath for the second week – it’s all a bit uncertain out that far.
Rusty.
