The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
First off, water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no worries there.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are pretty much a write-off. The swell is there at 5ft to 4ft from the ENE, but the wind is light cross to moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. Not worth paddling out for.
Things start to look up on Wednesday morning the 22nd. The wind swings offshore from the west, light at 6 mph, and the swell drops to 3ft from the ENE. It’s not pumping, but it’s clean. The combined energy is weak (198), so you’ll be working for them, but at least it’s surfable. That afternoon stays clean with a gentle offshore breeze.
The real standout window kicks off on Friday the 24th. Friday morning brings a clean 5ft S swell with a light offshore wind from the west. The energy is moderate (413) and the waves have shape. It’s a good one. Saturday the 25th is even better, with a 3ft to 4ft S swell, 12-second period, and clean offshore to cross-off winds. The combined energy bumps up to 496 in the afternoon. The waves will have better push, and the crowds are only sometimes an issue here.
Sunday the 26th morning is the pick of the first week. We’ve got glassy conditions, light wind from the SSW, and a clean 5ft S swell. The energy is moderate (444), and the waves will be absolutely pristine. Get out there early.
Now, for the second week, we’ve got a big change. Thursday the 30th sees a massive pulse of S swell up to 13ft, but the energy is huge (8046). This is far too big for Cowries – only for experts, and even then, it’s likely too much for this break. The wind is offshore, fresh, and clean, but the size is a problem.
Friday the 31st is the standout of the second week. The swell drops to 10ft from the SSE, still serious, but the wind is light cross-off from the SSW. The combined energy is still strong (2160), and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big-wave day for the crew who know what they’re doing.
Saturday the 1st of August offers another solid day with a 8ft SSE swell and light cross-off wind in the morning. Energy is high (1462), and it’s clean. Still a day for the experienced.
Sunday the 2nd comes in a bit smaller at 7ft to 7ft from the SSE, with clean morning conditions. The energy drops to 868, but it’s still very good surf for the more competent paddlers.
The swell slowly fades into the first week of August, with Monday the 3rd offering a clean 6ft SSE swell. That’s a good end to the run.
Remember, that massive swell on the 30th and 31st is a long-period groundswell (11 to 13 seconds), which will be lining up nicely at this reef and point setup, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
This is Rusty, signing off.
