Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cowries over the next 16 days.
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Cowries. It’s a slow burner, but the back half of this forecast is a proper beast.
We’re starting off flat. The first few days are a grind. Thursday the 9th shows some clean 5ft surf from the SE, but it’s just not enough to get excited about – the energy is weak, and the wind is a light cross-off, keeping it tidy but small. That’s the story for the next week. Friday and Saturday stay small, with the swell dropping off. By Sunday the 12th, we’re down to 2ft waves with a fresh offshore breeze – clean, but barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is about average for this time of year at Cowries.
We hit a dry spell from Sunday all the way through the middle of the next week. The energy drops out completely, with combined swell energy falling to just 11 (weak) by Tuesday the 14th. It’s flat, it’s poor, and there’s nothing to recommend. That’s a solid gap of about 4-5 days of no real surf.
Then things get interesting. On Wednesday the 15th, a new, messy swell pushes in. The swell height jumps to 6ft by morning and hits 8ft by the afternoon, but it’s short-period (7-8 seconds) and the wind is howling at 22 mph. It’s just poor, choppy conditions. Not worth a paddle.
Now, here’s the big one. Thursday the 16th through to Saturday the 18th, the swell absolutely explodes. We’re talking 13ft to 16ft of solid SSE groundswell, with periods hitting 10-12 seconds. The combined energy goes through the roof, peaking at 7934 (very strong). This is huge, expert-only territory. The wind is mostly cross-off and even glassy on Saturday morning, so the conditions will be clean, but at 13ft, this is strictly for the big-wave crew. The break is a reef and point, so it’ll handle the size, but don’t be a hero if you’re not ready. The crowds could be around, but honestly, at that size, it’ll thin out quick.
Sunday the 19th is still massive, but the wind swings around to the north-northeast, and the surf gets messy and choppy. Not the day.
The standout window, and the best bet for the average surfer, comes on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. The swell drops to a much more manageable 10ft on Monday morning, easing to 8ft by the afternoon, with a solid 11-second period from the SE. The wind is light to moderate cross-off from the NW, keeping the waves clean. Combined energy is still strong at 1952. This is where you want to be – excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Tuesday the 21st keeps the goods coming with 6ft surf and a clean offshore breeze from the WSW. It’s a bit smaller but still very good.
After that, the surf tapers off through the 22nd and 23rd, with a bit of a bump on the 24th, but nothing that beats that Monday-Tuesday run.
Bottom line: The first week is a write-off. The real action kicks off on the 16th, but it’s too big for most. Your best bet, the true standout, is Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st at Cowries. The swell is 8ft to 10ft from the SE, clean conditions, and a solid period. That’s the window for a good, heavy session.
Rusty.
