The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's ahead for Kiama Wedge. It's a bit of a mixed bag over the next two and a half weeks, but there is a couple of real windows of opportunity to get excited about.
The forecast kicks off on Wednesday the 15th of July with a bit of a lumpy offering. The swell is there at 8ft from the south, but the 12 mph cross-shore breeze is making it a choppy, cross-chop mess. The wave energy is strong (1203), but the quality is marginal. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there. This isn't the day to get your hopes up.
We then hit a big dry spell. From Thursday the 16th right through to Saturday the 19th of July, it's pretty poor. The swell drops off and the winds stay onshore or cross-shore, making for nothing but choppy, unrideable conditions. The wave energy drops right down to weak levels (96 to 160 on the 17th and 18th). It's a flat and frustrating stretch.
Things start to look up on Sunday the 19th of July. The swell comes back up to 6ft to 6ft from the ENE, with a period of 10 to 11 seconds. The wind is light, but it's still cross-onshore, so the surf is only marginal. The wave energy is strong (870 to 941) though, so the ocean has some power. It's a tease.
Now, here's the standout. Monday the 20th of July morning is the pick of the whole outlook. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, coming from the NNE at 3 mph. The swell is a solid 6ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period. The wave energy is strong (829), and the conditions are described as "glassy" with "very good surf conditions." This is the one. Kiama Wedge is a reef break that's fairly consistent, and with these clean, glassy conditions, it's going to be firing. The swell direction from ENE is spot on for this spot's optimum (E). The water temp is still about average for this time of year.
Tuesday the 21st of July morning is also a good follow-up. The wind swings to a light offshore from the NNW at 6 mph, making for clean waves. The swell is 5ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period. The wave energy is moderate (530). It's a solid option, but Monday's glass-off is the real winner.
After that, the surf drops off again. The rest of the week from the 22nd to the 24th of July is marginal at best, with weak to moderate energy and onshore winds returning. The swell picks up again on the 24th of July (Friday), but it's a short-period, onshore mess from the south.
The second week runs into better weather, but with smaller waves. The 25th of July Saturday morning sees a clean, glassy 3ft swell from the ENE, but it's small. The 30th of July Thursday morning shows a promising end to the outlook: a glassy 4ft from the SSE with a calm wind, giving "good surf conditions." The energy is moderate (379). It's a nice, small-wave option for the longboard or a fish.
So, to sum it up: the first few days are a write-off. The real window is Monday the 20th of July morning, with Tuesday the 21st of July morning as a close second. After that, it's a mix of small clean days and onshore slop. Keep your eyes on those glassy Monday morning waves.
Rusty.
