The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up at Mckenzies Beach. It’s a very consistent point break, exposed to the swell, and it handles a SE direction best. Right now, the water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
The next week or so is mostly small and ordinary. Monday the 24th kicks off with 2ft from the S, period 9 seconds, and a N cross-off wind. The energy’s weak (107). It’s surfable but nothing to get excited about. Monday arvo sees a jump to 4ft from the NE, but the period drops to 6 seconds – short-period slop. Energy’s moderate (140) but conditions are still ordinary.
Tuesday the 25th stays around 4ft from the NE, period 7 seconds, with a N cross-off. Energy picks up a bit (260–303) but it’s still marginal. Wednesday the 26th morning is a write-off with a S cross-on and rain. Then Wednesday arvo things look up a little: the wind goes glassy, swell hits 5ft from the SSE, period 7 seconds, and energy is moderate (350). That’s a solid window of clean, glassy surf – probably the best of this first week.
Thursday the 27th morning drops back to 2ft from the NE, period 8 seconds, but it’s glassy again with weak energy (156). Arvo gets a SSE swell at 3ft but with a longer period of 12 seconds and a cross-on wind – not great.
Friday the 28th morning is a standout: 4ft from the SSE, period 10 seconds, glassy calm, and energy moderate (387). That’s clean, fun-sized surf. Arvo gets onshore and marginal. Saturday the 29th morning is also clean and glassy with 3ft from the SSE, period 10 seconds, energy moderate (213) – another good window.
Then we hit a flat spell. From Sunday the 30th through to Wednesday the 3rd of September, the swell drops below 2ft, mostly poor conditions, and the energy goes weak (43–146). It’s a proper lull.
Things start looking up again on Friday the 4th of September. Morning brings 3ft from the SSE, period 10 seconds, with a gentle offshore from the W. Energy is moderate (262). Clean and lined up. But the real gem is Saturday the 5th of September morning: 3ft from the SE, period a very long 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Glassy conditions, energy strong (398). That long period will peel nicely down the point. The crowd factor is often, so you’ll have company, but for the quality on offer it’s worth it. This is the pick of the whole outlook.
Sunday the 6th drops back to 2ft from the SSE, period 12 seconds, with a cross-off wind – still clean but much smaller. Monday and Tuesday the 7th–8th are back to tiny, weak surf with poor conditions.
So overall, the standout windows are Wednesday arvo the 26th, Friday morning the 28th, Saturday morning the 29th, and especially Saturday morning the 5th of September. That last one with the long-period SE groundswell and glassy conditions is the one to circle. It’s a little way off, but the promise is real.
Rusty.
