The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what we’ve got lined up. It’s a bit of a mixed bag for Mckenzies Beach over the next couple of weeks, but there are definitely a few windows where it’ll be worth paddling out.
The first bit of the forecast is pretty quiet. Saturday the 18th is a write-off with tiny 1ft wind-chopped slop, so don’t even bother. But things start to look up from Sunday the 19th. That morning we’ve got a really nice little pulse of 4ft swell from the ENE with a very long 12-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the NNW. That’s clean, organised surf with decent energy (451). It’s not huge, but the quality will be there, and Mckenzies is a consistent point break that handles that direction well. The water temp is sitting at 63°, pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
Sunday afternoon picks up a bit more size to 6ft, but the wind swings cross-onshore, so it’ll get a bit lumpy. Monday the 20th morning is the standout of the first week, though. Clean, cross-off wind, 5ft of ENE groundswell at 11 seconds, energy reading 615 – that’s proper moderate energy, and the wave shape should be really good. It’s intermediate-level stuff, not too big, and with the point setup, those longer-period waves will wrap in nicely. Crowds are often here, so expect a few locals out, but it’ll be worth it.
Tuesday the 21st holds pretty well too, both sessions are glassy with 4ft swell, and Wednesday the 22nd sees offshore winds with clean 3ft – 3ft waves. The energy drops off a bit midweek (down to 162), but it’s still surfable.
From Thursday the 23rd, we hit a rough patch. S out of the south with short-period junky windswell – poor quality. That slop lasts right through until the end of July. Thursday the 30th has a very long-period 15-second SSE swell but only 1ft, so really just a ripple. The energy numbers are mostly weak (under 100), and the wind is messy.
We get a bit of hope again on Sunday the 2nd of August. Clean, glassy conditions, 3ft of ENE swell at 8 seconds, and moderate energy (239). That’ll be rideable, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it – long-range calls are always a bit less certain.
Overall, the best session is Monday morning, 20th July – clean, solid 5ft groundswell from the east-nor-east, light offshore, great energy, and a reliable point break. That’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
