Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Mckenzies Beach. It’s a point break, very consistent, exposed to swell, and it likes it from the SE. The water temp is sitting at 64° right now, which is about normal for this time of year.
Right, let’s get into it. We’ve got a bit of a slow start. Friday and Saturday are pretty flat with poor surf. Saturday morning the 4th of July is glassy with a tiny 2ft S swell, but it’s gutless and ordinary. Then Sunday the 5th brings a jump – a solid 8ft S groundswell at 11 seconds pushing through 1863 units of energy, but the wind is a messy cross-shore. It’s going to be a lumpy, choppy mess, too big for beginners, and the cross-chop will spoil it. Not one for the paddle.
Monday the 6th settles a bit but it’s still cross-shore and marginal. Then we get a cracking window. Tuesday morning the 7th of July looks the goods – a clean 5ft SE swell with a nice 10-second period, light cross-offshore breeze from the WSW, and 618 units of energy. Conditions will be clean and fun for intermediates. Wednesday morning the 8th is similar, with 5ft SE swell and clean again, another good session.
Thursday the 9th morning is the stand-out of the first week. A solid 6ft SSE groundswell at 11 seconds, 759 units of energy, and clean, light cross-offshore wind. That’s proper shape, good power, and long waits between sets – a classic point break day. The afternoon turns choppy so make the most of the morning.
After that, it drops back into small, weak surf through the weekend and into the start of the second week. Morning glass-offs on Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th will be tiny and clean but barely rideable. Then we get a bit of a pulse on Tuesday the 14th of July – a 7ft S swell at 8 seconds with a gusty 12 mph offshore wind from the WNW, 921 units of energy. It’ll be clean but the short period means it’s not going to have the best shape.
Now for the big one. Wednesday the 15th of July is a monster. A massive 16ft S groundswell with a very long 13-second period, and a staggering 12,367 units of energy. The wind is light and clean, but this is way too big – over 8ft, experts only. This break will be overwhelmed, it’s just too much. Thursday the 16th afternoon is the hidden gem, though. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8ft SSE groundswell at 12 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze and clean conditions. That’s excellent for experienced surfers – big, powerful, and clean.
Then the last few days of the outlook go raw again. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th have massive 10ft to 12ft S swell but the wind is onshore or cross-shore and lumpy. Absolute mess for paddle surfing; honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a surfboard.
Overall, the best on offer is Thursday morning the 9th of July for clean, solid groundswell, and Thursday afternoon the 16th for big, clean, expert-only waves. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too big.
