The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Mckenzies Beach. This is a consistent point break that loves a swell from the SE, so we're always watching that direction.
The next 16 days start off a bit slow. We've got a small window on Wednesday afternoon, but it's onshore wind and a weak 4ft swell from the S with a 7-second period, so it's going to be pretty ordinary. Honestly, you can probably give that a miss. The combined energy is only 230 – weak, and not worth the paddle. Water temp is sitting at 63°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
Thursday the 16th is a write-off as well, with a drop in size and messy cross-off to cross-on winds. Friday and Saturday are tiny, with 1ft to 2ft waves. Glassy conditions on Friday morning and Saturday morning are nice to look at, but there's just not enough there to ride.
Then we hit a bit of a gap. Sunday morning the 19th is where it starts to get interesting. The swell picks up to 4ft from the ENE, with a 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 272 – moderate now. The wind is glassy offshore from the NNW. That's a morning worth getting up for. The swell is still modest, but it'll be clean.
Monday morning the 20th is the real standout. The swell holds at 5ft from the ENE, period stays at 10 seconds, and the combined energy is 526 – strong. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the N, keeping things clean. This is going to be the best session of the whole run. The size is getting up there, but it's still fine for intermediates, and the point setup will handle that ENE direction well. Expect some good ones.
Tuesday morning the 21st is another glassy morning with 4ft swell, and the energy is still strong at 384. Another solid option. Wednesday the 22nd morning is also glassy, with 4ft and 258 energy. The pattern is clear: early mornings are the go.
The second week gets a bit messy. From Thursday the 23rd through to the 26th, the swell drops back to under 3ft, and the wind turns onshore or cross-shore. It's not worth planning around. Sunday the 26th does have a late afternoon offshore from the NW, but the swell is only 2ft, so it's a skimboard kind of day.
The 28th of July sees a jump in size to 6ft from the S, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore and the conditions are poor. The energy is strong at 497, but it's going to be choppy and messy – more of a kite session than a paddle one.
We finish the outlook strong though. The 29th and 30th of July both have glassy mornings with 4ft to 4ft swell from the SSE, with periods stretching to 12 seconds. That's a nice long-period groundswell, and the point break will love it. The combined energy on the 30th is 376 – solid. If you can wait until the very end of the run, those mornings look like they'll deliver clean, fun waves.
So, bottom line: the best on offer is Monday morning the 20th of July, with Sunday the 19th and Tuesday the 21st close behind. The 29th and 30th are promising but a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
