The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Mckenzies Beach over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is looking pretty grim. We’re talking a long stretch of minimal to no rideable surf. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, it’s mostly small, weak, and messy. The swell is tiny – mostly under 3 feet – and coming from the NE or ENE, which isn’t doing this spot any favours. The wave energy is low, often hovering around 100 to 200 (moderate), but it’s just not translating into anything you’d want to paddle out for. A few mornings show glassy conditions, like Sunday the 24th and Thursday the 27th, but the swell is too small and weak to get excited about. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
Now, there’s a glimmer of hope. The real standout is not until Tuesday the 1st of September, and then again on Friday the 4th. These are the only two true highlights in the whole outlook.
Tuesday, 1st September – Morning
This is the pick of the bunch. The morning sees a solid 6-foot swell from the south, with a period of 8 seconds. The wave energy jumps right up to 583 (strong), and the wind is a light offshore from the NNE, making for clean, lined-up waves. This is the best we’ve got – a proper session on the cards. The swell is a bit much for beginners, but for intermediates and up, it’s game on. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Friday, 4th September – Morning
This one is a little further out, so a bit less certain, but it looks like a cracker. Another 7-foot south swell, with a period of 9 seconds, and a massive combined energy of 966 (very strong). The wind is dead calm – glassy conditions – which is a major positive. This is a big, powerful swell, so it’s experts-only territory. If it holds, this could be the session of the window.
In between those two days, the 2nd and 3rd are a write-off, with onshore winds and messy conditions.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. Hang tight, because the 1st of September morning is your best bet, and the 4th of September morning is a promising, long-range bombshell. Keep an eye on the forecast.
Rusty.
