G’day, I’m Rusty, and here’s the full picture for Mckenzies Beach. This is a very consistent point break that’s exposed to swell from the southeast, so when it lights up, it can be a beauty. Right now, water temp is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year—nothing weird there. The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a couple of moments worth paddling out for.
Monday, July 6th, starts off with a 8ft SSE swell that’s packing a lot of energy (1809), but the wind is a cross-shore, so there’s a bit of chop. It’s surfable, but not the best. Tuesday’s similar, with a 7ft SE swell (1132) and more cross-shore wind, just okay. Things improve on Wednesday, July 8th: the morning has a clean 7ft SE swell (936) with a light cross-offshore breeze, making for some good waves. The wave energy is moderate, but it’s a solid option for intermediates.
The standout for the first week is Thursday, July 9th, morning. That’s the pick. A 4ft ESE swell (577) with a very light cross-offshore wind and clean conditions. The period is 11 seconds, so it’s a groundswell, and that longer period means better-shaped waves on a point like this. It’s not huge, but it’s clean and fun. After that, Friday and Saturday have smaller waves around 5ft and 3ft, but still clean in the mornings with light winds. Then from Sunday, July 12th, the swell drops off hard—2ft, 2ft, and then almost nothing for days. There’s a long gap of quiet surf from the 12th through to the 16th, with only tiny, weak waves. Not worth paddling out unless you’re desperate for a float.
Now, for the real standout: Friday, July 17th, morning. This is the one to circle on the calendar. A solid 10ft S swell (4081) with glassy conditions and a light offshore wind. That’s a lot of energy—very strong—and the period is 12 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell. The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and I’m stoked to say that’s the truth. This is big, clean, and powerful. It’s only for experts, though—over 8ft, so beginners should stay out. The swell direction is from the south, which matches the optimum swell direction for this spot, so it’ll be hitting the point just right. The glassy morning wind is a major positive. Later that day, the afternoon is still good with a 8ft S swell (2133), but the wind goes cross-on, so the morning is the real winner. The following Saturday, July 18th, has a smaller 4ft SSE swell (217), clean in the morning, but it’s a comedown after that Friday session.
Overall, the first week has some clean, moderate waves, but the big one is July 17th morning. That’s the highlight. The gap after the 12th is quiet, but the forecast can change, so keep an eye out. For now, get ready for that Friday. Rusty.
