The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s heading our way for the next couple of weeks. It’s been a bit of a flat spell, and honestly, we’re in for a long wait before anything really gets going.
The overall pattern is quiet. For the first week, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell and only a few windows of clean enough conditions to justify a paddle. The real standout doesn’t appear until Sunday the 30th of August, which is the best bet in the whole outlook. After that, things dry up again, with a long gap of mediocre to flat conditions stretching through the first week of September. There’s a little flicker of life right at the end on September 7th, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Let’s break it down. The only spot on offer is Mckenzies Beach, a very consistent point break that handles swell from the SE. For a point break, that’s a decent direction for shape.
Right now, from Sunday the 23rd through the middle of the week, it’s tiny. We’ve got weak, short-period swell around 2 ft to 4 ft, mostly from the SSE or NE, with combined energy reading between 106 and 195 (moderate energy). The winds are mostly cross-off or light, keeping things clean, but the waves are just too small and weak to be exciting. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Then we get to Sunday morning, August 30th. This is the one to circle on the calendar. We’ve got clean 4 ft swell from the S, with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of 300, which is a solid moderate energy level. The wind is dead calm – glassy conditions, zero chop. This will be the cleanest surf of the whole period. It’s not big, but for a point break, small and glassy beats big and blown out every time. Do expect a few others in the water, though, as it’s often crowded here.
After that Sunday morning high point, the surf dives again. From Monday the 31st right through to Saturday the 5th of September, it’s mostly poor. Tiny swell under 3 ft, mixed energy, and unfavourable winds. There’s a couple of afternoons on September 1st and 3rd with clean offshore winds from the WNW, but the swell is only 1 ft to 2 ft – barely ridable. It’s a long, dry stretch.
On Monday morning, September 7th, there’s a last gasp: 4 ft from the NE but with a weak 6-second period and onshore wind. Combined energy is only 159. It’s messy and not recommended. Then the outlook ends.
So, the honest truth? There’s really only one session worth chasing: the glassy Sunday morning of August 30th at Mckenzies. The rest is either too small, too weak, or too windy. For a spot this consistent, it’s a quiet run, but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
