The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe at Mckenzies Beach. It’s a very consistent point break that likes a swell from the SE, but the next week and a half is going to be a bit of a slow burn. Patience will be key.
Right now, and for the next few days, it’s pretty flat and sloppy. Thursday the 16th is a write-off with a weak 2ft SSE windswell and a cross-onshore breeze muddying things up. Friday morning offers a moment of peace with glassy conditions on a tiny 1.0ft S swell, but there's no power there. The water temp is sitting at a pretty standard 63° for this time of year, nothing unusual there. The weekend doesn't look much better; Saturday morning is glassy but the wave energy is weak, and by Sunday we start to see a pulse of ENE swell building. Sunday afternoon sees the combined energy jump to a moderate 478, with 4ft from the ENE, but the cross-shore wind keeps things from being perfect.
The first real standout comes early next week. Monday the 20th is where it finally gets interesting. The morning is a beauty – clean with a cross-offshore breeze from the north and a solid 5ft of ENE swell. The combined energy is strong, sitting at 566, and the forecast says expect very good surf conditions. This is the pick for confident, clean waves. If you can get out for Monday morning, that’s your window. Monday afternoon the wind swings cross-shore, which drops the quality a notch.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd keep the ENE swell running, but the quality is mixed with onshore winds in the afternoons. Mornings are glassy or clean, offering surfable but ordinary conditions. By Wednesday afternoon, it drops off again.
The end of the week (23rd and 24th) sees the swell drop back, with stronger winds making things less appealing. There’s a bit of a swell pulse on the 27th of July, a Monday morning, with 5ft from the S and glassy conditions. The energy is strong (324) and it looks good, but the period is short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and disorganized at this beach break setup. Still, a fun option for the skilled crew.
Looking way out to Wednesday the 29th, we get another nice pulse. Morning brings 5ft from the S with a clean, cross-offshore wind (energy moderate at 415), and that’s your second standout for the experts, though the swell direction isn’t ideal for Mckenzies' optimum SE direction, so it might be a bit softer than usual.
Honestly, there’s nothing worth rushing for until the 20th. The gap from now until then is a long stretch of small, weak waves and average conditions. The consistent nature of this break means it won't stay poor forever, but right now, the 20th morning is the clear winner. For the weekend warriors, the 27th morning has some punch, but it’s short period so expect a bit of a fight on the paddle out.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the wind, and grab that Monday morning session.
Rusty.
