The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer down at Mckenzies Beach.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and frustrating. The tiny swell we get is mostly short-period windswell, and the wind is all over the shop. We’ve got a dry spell from now until the end of August, with only a few fleeting moments that are surfable, but nothing worth getting excited about. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t pop up until the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. That’s over a week of waiting. Up until then, we’re looking at knee-high dribble with the odd clean session, like Wednesday morning the 19th (3ft from the ENE with a light offshore breeze), or the glassy morning of Saturday the 22nd, but that swell is only 1ft. The energy is weak, with combined swell energy in the low double digits and fifties for most of this period.
Late in the month, things change. The standout is the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. We’ve got a solid 7ft groundswell rolling in from the SSE with a very long period of 14 seconds. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a massive 1636, so there’s a lot of power behind it. The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean. That’s a proper session for experienced surfers—it’s going to be big and powerful. That long period swell will be breaking a bit straight at the beach, so the paddle out might be easier between sets, but don’t be fooled, it’s only for the confident crew.
The afternoon of the same day holds up at 6ft from the SSE, but a light cross-onshore breeze creeps in, and the energy is still pumping at 1201. It’s a solid option, but the morning is the pick.
After that, Monday the 31st drops back to 4ft from the SSE, and the wind turns cross-shore with a cross-chop, so it’s a step down.
Honestly, if you can wait, that Sunday the 30th morning is the only real standout in the whole 16-day window. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
