The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but this time in feet and knots for those who think in the old numbers. Lookin’ at Denhams Beach for the next couple weeks – it starts quiet, but we’ve got one real gem.
Saturday the 18th of July is a dud – a tiny 1ft windswell from the east-northeast with nothin’ behind it. Save the wax. Then Sunday morning the 19th arrives, and that’s the session to circle on the calendar.
Sunday morning brings a clean 5ft swell out of the ENE, with a 12-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The water’s about 63°F, which is normal for mid-winter. Wind is dead glassy from the north-northwest. This is as clean as it gets for this beach. The swell energy is moderate (616). It’s beginner-friendly at that size and the conditions are about as good as it gets. The direction isn’t the absolute best for the spot, but you won’t care once you’re out there.
Monday morning the 20th is another good one – glassy winds again, wave height around 6ft, and a solid 667 energy reading. Another cracker if you missed Sunday. The afternoons get a bit bumpy, so go early.
Tuesday the 21st stays clean with 4ft to 5ft waves and glassy conditions. Then it all fades. From Wednesday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 29th, it’s mostly flat or tiny – a long stretch of poor to useless surf. You’re lookin’ at nearly a week with waves below 2ft and weak energy.
We get a tiny glimmer on Wednesday morning the 29th – a 3ft south-southeast swell with a short 6-second period and clean offshore wind. Surfable but nothing special. Thursday the 30th morning offers 4ft from the south, but at only 5 seconds, it’s weak and won’t hold shape.
The first of August brings heavy rain and 30 km/h onshore winds – stay on land. Sunday the 2nd of August glassy in the morning, but the swell’s only 4ft at 8 seconds. Ordinary.
Bottom line: Sunday morning, July 19th – that’s your winner. Clean, glassy, 5ft, with good energy. Monday morning is a close second. The rest of the run is for checkin’ the tide pools.
Rusty out.
