The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Denhams Beach.
To be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty quiet. There’s a long stretch here with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real chance of something decent doesn’t pop up until the end of the first week, and even then it’s a waiting game. We’ve got a lot of small, weak swell and a lot of onshore or cross-shore wind messing things up. The first few days are pretty much a write-off, so don’t bother waxing up just yet.
The first little pulse of energy arrives on Friday the 21st of August. The swell is tiny, only 3ft from the NE with a short period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is weak (67). The water is 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Wind is off in the morning, but the whole thing is just too ordinary to get excited about. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but that’s about it.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are flat as a tack. Swell drops right off, with heights down to 1ft and virtually no energy. Sunday afternoon gets a bit of side-onshore wind, and it’s just messy. This is a stretch of days where you’re better off doing something else.
Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 26th stay pretty small, with the swell hovering around 3ft to 3ft from the NE. The wind is a mixed bag, but nothing really lines up. On Wednesday afternoon we get a glassy moment with 3ft NE swell and the energy climbs to 162 (moderate), but it’s still just surfable, not good. The water anomaly is normal for this time of year.
The standout window, the only one I’d really circle on the calendar, is the very end of the run. Friday the 4th of September afternoon. That’s when the winds finally swing offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, the swell is 4ft from the NNE with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy bumps up to 283 (moderate). The conditions are set to be clean and offshore. It’s not a big swell, but it’s the best we’ve seen in the whole forecast. For a beginner-friendly spot like Denhams Beach, this is your moment. The swell is under 5ft, so it’s fine for all levels. Crowds are only sometimes an issue here, so you might get a few others with the same idea, but it’s worth it.
Before that, Thursday the 3rd of September morning has a glassy moment with 5ft NE swell, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the energy is 237. It’s surfable, but nowhere near as clean as the Friday window.
Overall, the first week is a big gap of nothing. The second week offers a couple of brief windows, but the Friday 4th of September afternoon is the clear standout. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
