The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Denhams Beach are a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s mostly a waiting game. The first week is pretty flat and ugly, but there’s a couple of windows where it all comes together for a decent session. The water temp is sitting around 63°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The forecast kicks off with nothing on Wednesday 15th July – just a flat, cross-on breeze and zero energy. Thursday 16th and Friday 17th are barely a ripple, with tiny 0.3ft to 1.0ft easterly slop and periods as short as 4 seconds. The combined energy is next to nothing (2 to 4), so you’re not missing a thing. There’s a gap of a few days with no real surf on offer.
Saturday 18th July sees a tiny bump to 2ft–2ft from the ENE, but the period is still short (7 seconds) and the energy is weak (30 to 41). The morning is glassy though, which is a tease. Sunday 19th July morning is the first real standout. We’ve got a clean 4ft ENE swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the NNW. The combined energy reads 314 – moderate, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The swell direction (ENE) isn’t a perfect match for the optimum ESE, but it’s still a solid, clean wave. However, the afternoon turns into a cross-on mess with the wind shifting ENE, and the swell jumps to 5ft (526 energy), so get in early.
Monday 20th July morning is marginal – 5ft ENE swell with a cross N wind, energy at 547, but it’s a bit lumpy. By afternoon, the wind cranks to 12 mph from the NE and it’s choppy and poor. Tuesday 21st July morning is another proper window: glassy WSW wind, 5ft ENE swell, 10-second period, and energy at 464. This is your second standout – clean, solid, and good for intermediate to advanced surfers. It’s a little under 8ft, so still okay for strong beginners, but the 5ft mark is on the edge. Wednesday 22nd July morning is also glassy with 4ft ENE swell (273 energy), but it’s a step down.
From Wednesday 22nd afternoon onwards, the swell drops and the wind turns onshore or cross-shore. The rest of the week into the end of July is a slow fade – 3ft down to 0.7ft, with weak energy (151 down to 8). The mornings on Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th, and Saturday 25th are glassy or clean, but the waves are tiny and ordinary. Sunday 26th and Monday 27th are just wind-bumped leftovers. The period on Monday 27th afternoon spikes to 17 seconds from the SE, but it’s only 1.0ft and messy – that’s a long-period groundswell with no height, so don’t get excited.
If you’re a beginner, the 4ft–5ft mornings (Sunday 19th and Tuesday 21st) are your best bet, but keep an eye on the tide. For experts, Tuesday 21st morning with the 5ft clean lines is the pick of the bunch. Crowds? Denhams Beach is ‘sometimes’ busy, so it’s worth checking on a weekday morning. The consistency is ‘very consistent’ here, so it tends not to stay flat for long – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
