The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Pink Rocks.

To be straight with you, the next week and a half is pretty quiet. There’s a lot of flat, small days with poor conditions through Thursday the 27th of August, so we’re talking about a good stretch of waiting. The water’s sitting at 17°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nice for a thin wetsuit or a spring suit, but it’s not going to save the surf.

The first real standout doesn’t arrive until the early morning of Thursday the 27th. That’s when a proper S swell bumps up to 6 feet with an 11-second period, and the combined energy hits 1053 (strong to very strong wave energy). Winds will be light cross-off from the W, keeping the faces clean. This is a long-period groundswell, so at a reef spot like Pink Rocks, the shape should be good and the sets will have some proper push. But at 6 feet, it’s getting too big for beginners – this one’s for the advanced crew, which is just as well because the break is inconsistent and only for experienced surfers anyway. Crowds are possible here. The swell direction is S, and the optimum is SE, so it’s close enough but not bang on. This is the best on offer, hands down.

Friday the 28th morning still looks alright, with 5 feet SSE swell and glassy conditions. Combined energy drops to 369 (moderate wave energy). It’s clean and rideable but nothing like the day before. By Friday afternoon, the swell is up to 7 feet but it gets a cross-on wind, so it’ll be messy and really only for the experts.

For the rest of the run up to the 27th, you’re looking at small, weak, and mostly onshore junk. There’s a bit of glass on Sunday the 23rd morning, but only 3 feet – not worth paddling out for. The long gap of nothing is the story here, so if you’re keen, mark the 27th on your calendar as the one to keep an eye on.

Rusty.
