Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ down the line for the Merimbula Bar. It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a window of clean conditions and a real standout later on that’s got my blood pumpin’.
First up, we’ve got nothing worth paddlin’ out for at the beginning. The first action worth mentionin’ is Monday the 7th, but it’s a real mixed bag. The swell is around 5ft to 6ft from the SE, with a period of 10 to 11 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore from the SW and SSW. The wave energy is moderate (combined energy of 777 and 919), but it’s messy and choppy, so it’s a pass from me.
Things start to look up on Thursday the 9th. The swell drops to 4ft from the SE with a 10-second period, but the wind is glassy from the SW in the morning. That’s clean, glassy surf, and the combined energy is 359 – weak but clean. It’s the pick of the early days, but it’s small.
Friday the 10th is alright too. The swell is a touch over 4ft from the ESE and SE, with a 9-second period, and the wind is light cross-off from the NW and NE. It’s clean but small, combined energy of 357 and 203. Still, a fun little wave for the longboard if you’re keen.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Saturday the 11th all the way through to Thursday the 17th, the swell drops right off. The waves hover around 0.7ft to 2ft, and the combined energy is mostly below 100. It’s a real flat run, with poor surf conditions and only a few tiny, ordinary waves. There’s a gap of about 6 days where I wouldn’t bother.
Now, here’s the standout. Friday the 17th is the one to circle. The morning is glassy from the WNW, with a 5ft SSE swell, 10-second period, and a combined energy of 395. It’s looking clean. But the afternoon is where it’s at: the swell jumps to 7ft from the S, with a 10-second period, and the wind is light cross-off from the NE. The combined energy is a strong 1190, and the conditions are expected to be very good. That’s a solid mid-range swell, clean and powerful, and it’s the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. The water temp is about 60°, which is pretty average for this time of year.
For the Merimbula Bar, it’s a river mouth, so it can be inconsistent, and it’s often crowded. But on that Friday the 17th, with a clean 7ft swell from the S, it’s goin’ to be a ripper. The swell direction (S) is a match for the SE optimum, so it’s working well.
The second week from the 18th onward drops off again. Saturday the 18th has a 3ft SE swell with offshore wind, but it’s small and weak. The rest of the days are flat, tiny, and not worth a mention.
So, if you’re keen, keep an eye on Thursday the 9th for a small glassy session, but the real standout is Friday the 17th of July. That’s the day to get out there.
Rusty.
