Kianga Point Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Kianga Point over the next couple of weeks.

It’s been a quiet start, but there’s a bit of a pulse building. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit.

The first real chance to get wet comes on Friday the 7th of August. Early morning we’ve got a tiny 3ft SSE swell with a period of 9 seconds, but the wind is glassy. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Nothing to get excited about. That little window closes fast as the wind swings onshore by the afternoon.

Sunday the 9th sees a building NE swell, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-on wind, it’s a messy 5ft. Honestly, the combined energy is only 229 (moderate), but the wind is just wrecking it. This one is for the kite surfers, not us.

Now, Monday the 10th of August is our first real standout. The morning has a clean 5ft NE swell, 9 second period, with a gentle 9 mph offshore wind from the west. The combined energy jumps to 371 (moderate), and the conditions are described as good. The offshore wind will have the point looking clean. It’s a bit of a beginner-friendly size, and the consistency is fairly consistent. The optimum swell direction for Kianga Point is SE, so this NE swell is not perfect, but the offshore wind makes up for it. It gets even better in the afternoon as the swell drops to 4ft but the energy is still high at 389 (moderate) and a moderate 12 mph offshore. This is the pick of the first week.

The second week brings a serious change. Thursday the 13th of August a big S swell arrives, but it’s too big. The morning shows a massive 12ft S swell, with a period of 9 seconds and combined energy of 1821 (very strong). The wind is cross-off, but the wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it’s marginal. The afternoon drops to 10ft, still huge.

The true standout for the whole outlook is Friday the 14th of August. The morning has a 10ft S swell, 10 second period, with a 9 mph offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is a massive 3441 (very strong). The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers”. This is a proper groundswell with a long period, and it’s going to be firing down the point. It’s a big, powerful swell, only for the experienced crew, and the offshore wind will make it as clean as you could hope for. The swell direction (S) matches the optimum (SE) reasonably well. This is the one to aim for.

After that, Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th have a lot of wind and dropping swell, still big but messy. The energy is still strong but the wind is up. Things taper off into the following week with small, weak swells and mostly poor conditions.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is small and wind-susceptible, but Monday the 10th is a nice little clean session. The second week is all about Friday the 14th of August – that’s the big one, but don’t even think about it unless you’ve got the skills and the board for it.
