The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a look at what Kianga Point’s got cooking. It’s a point break, which is a good sign for the kind of swell we’re getting later on. The water’s sitting at 62.4°, which is a touch warmer than you’d normally expect for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit.

Alright, the next week or so is pretty flat. We’ve got a gap from now all the way through to Thursday, 14 August, with nothing worth paddling out for. The first real glimmer is on the morning of Thursday, 14 August. Kianga Point picks up a 5ft swell from the south, with a moderate offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is solid (472), and it’s clean. It’s not the standout of the run, but it’s a good sign that things are waking up.

Now, the real standout – and I mean the one you circle on the calendar – is Friday, 21 August in the morning. We’re looking at a 6.2ft swell from the northeast, with a very long period of 13 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The wind is light off the NW, so it’s going to be clean. The combined energy is a massive 1217, which is serious power. This is excellent for experienced surfers; the point will be handling that long-period energy beautifully, giving you long, lined-up walls. It might be a bit much for beginners – over 5ft – so if you’re not confident, watch from the bank.

Then Saturday, 22 August, is also a ripper. The morning is glassy, with a 5.6ft swell from the east-northeast, still that long 13-second period. The combined energy is even bigger at 1551. That’s a lot of water moving. It’s another one for the experienced crew. The swell is over 5ft again, so it’s not a learner’s day.

Crowds at Kianga Point can be a bit of a thing sometimes, so for these standout days, especially with the offshore winds and that long-period groundswell, expect company. The point will be offering up some proper waves. After that, things start to drop off again quickly, so make the most of that window from the 21st to the 22nd.
