The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again for the same stretch, but in feet and miles. Pambula Rivermouth is gonna be a tough one for the next couple of weeks.
We’re starting off with a real dry spell. From Wednesday the 15th of July through to Sunday the 19th, there’s barely a ripple. Swell readings are next to nothing, so don’t bother checking the charts. The combined energy is zero to 15 (weak energy), so you’re looking at flat water. Morning glass-offs on the 17th and 18th are nice, but there’s nothing to surf.
Come Sunday the 19th, a small pulse shows up. That afternoon we get a 3ft ENE windswell, but it’s onshore and messy. The energy reading climbs to 287 (moderate), but it’s poor quality. Monday the 20th sees the swell build to 4ft–4ft from the ENE, period around 10 seconds, but the onshore wind ruins it. This is more of a kite day than a paddle day.
The first real highlight is Tuesday morning, the 21st of July. The swell drops to about 4ft from the ENE, but the wind swings offshore from the SW at just 3 mph. The water temp is about 60°F, which is pretty average for the season. The wave energy is moderate at 252 (moderate), and with clean conditions, the river mouth might actually offer a few workable waves. The swell direction is a perfect match for what this break likes. It’s an inconsistent, advanced spot, and crowds are possible, so be ready for that.
Next up, Friday afternoon, the 24th of July. Another 4ft ENE swell, period pushing to 11 seconds, and the wind goes clean offshore from the SW at 16 mph. Energy is still moderate at 337 (moderate), and the offshore wind will groom it nicely. This could be the best wave of the run, but it’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not locked in.
After that, the swell fades through the last week of July. The mornings of the 27th and 28th offer small, clean 2ft waves, but they’re weak with energy dropping to 109 (moderate) and 103 (moderate). Not worth a special trip.
So, the bottom line: there’s a narrow window. Your best bets are Tuesday the 21st morning and Friday the 24th afternoon. The rest is a long stretch of flat or messy conditions. Keep your eyes on those two days.
Rusty.
