The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Fair dinkum, it’s a bit of a flat spell on the cards for Pambula Rivermouth. We’ve got a solid stretch of nothing on offer for the next couple of weeks. Looking at the whole window, there’s a heap of days with just ankle-biters and junk wind. You’d be best off waxing the longboard for a skate or checking the tidal pools, because the surf just isn’t there for a paddle.
To start, the water’s sitting at 60°, which is about par for the course this time of year, so no dramas there. The first recommendation doesn't come up until Wednesday, the 2nd of September. That’s a long wait, more than a week of nothing but dribble. The first real sign of life shows up on Wednesday morning. We’ve got some new energy sneaking in from the southeast, pushing 5ft at 9 seconds. It’s glassy early with a touch of offshore, and the combined energy is moderate at 393. That’s the pick of the bunch. Still, it’s a river mouth, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets. With that size, it’s okay for most surfers, but beginners might find it a bit much.
But by Wednesday afternoon, the swell jumps up. We’re looking at 7ft from the southeast, with a period stretching to 11 seconds. The energy jumps right up to a strong 1704. The wind is light cross-onshore, which will put a bit of texture on it, but it’s not blown out. This is the standout of the whole period, but with that size it’s only for the experienced crew. The longer period means the waves will have some punch, and it’s a river mouth, so it could line up alright, but that light cross-shore might make it a bit tricky. Since it’s more than a week away, call it promising but not a lock. If you’re a solid surfer, that Wednesday afternoon is the one to pencil in, but for everyone else, the morning session is the safer bet. With the river mouth, a bit of crowd is possible, but with it being inconsistent, it might thin out.
All in all, the first week and a bit is a write-off, mate. Stay patient. The second week’s offering looks good, but it’s a long way off. This is a spot that likes a bit of east in the swell, and this is coming from the southeast, so it’s not perfect, but it’s something.
Signing off, Rusty.
