Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.
Honestly, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a write-off for any decent surf. We’ve got a long, quiet spell ahead. There’s nothing worth paddling out for from now until the middle of next week. The first real chance of something rideable doesn't pop up until Wednesday morning, the 9th of September.
For that Wednesday morning, the best we can hope for is at Napier - Marine Parade. It’ll be small, with waves around 3ft from the ESE, but the kicker here is the wind. It’s forecast to be glassy, which is a major positive. The wave energy is weak, coming in at 126, and with a short period of 8 seconds, it won't have much push. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, so if you’re just starting out or have a foamie and want to get wet without getting smashed, this is your window. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
After that, it's back to tiny, weak conditions. The Thursday and Friday that follow are tiny. We see a bit more energy pop up on Monday the 14th of September, with a 2ft swell from the SE and a period of 13 seconds, but it’s getting hammered by an onshore easterly wind in the afternoon. That’s a no-go.
Further out, into the third week of September, there's a flicker of hope. On Sunday the 20th of September, we see a small pulse with offshore winds. The Monday and Tuesday after that also have some offshore flow and tiny waves. The energy is still weak, but clean offshore wind is always a good sign.
In short, it’s a lean run. If you’re desperate for a splash, Wednesday morning the 9th is your best bet for a clean, tiny wave. Otherwise, keep the board in the shed and wait for the next system to roll through.
