The Lowdown
Oi, Rusty here. Alright, let’s break this down for Stingray Bay. The first week and a half is a flat spell of weak, tiny waves. The main event is a massive swell that turns up on the 21st of September, but it’s gonna be way too meaty for most. This is a reef and point, so it needs some size to work, but we’re going from nothing to a bomb.
Right off the bat, Thursday the 10th gives us a tiny 0.6m swell from the ESE, but the energy is weak, reading 45. It’s just ordinary. Friday morning the 11th drops even smaller, to 0.2m. There are some glassy moments – Thursday afternoon is dead still, and Friday afternoon is glassy too – but there’s no power behind them. This same story plays out for days. From Saturday the 12th all the way through the 19th of September, the waves stay pathetic, mostly under 0.5m with energy readings in the single digits. You’ll be staring at a lake.
Then it cranks up. Sunday the 21st of September morning fires up with a 2.5m swell from the SE, and a combined energy of 1486 (moderate wave energy). Wind is a clean cross-offshore from the NNW. But that 2.5m and bigger is expert territory only. Monday the 22nd gets even bigger, 3.0m to 3.5m from the ESE, with energy readings in the thousands (very strong wave energy). Tuesday the 23rd is another heavy day, 3.5m from the SSE at 10 seconds, but the wind is glassy in the morning. This is a serious, powerful swell.
If you’re a charger, the standout is the glassy morning of Tuesday the 23rd of September. Massive 3.5m sets from the SSE, with no wind. It’ll be a clean, heaving wall at this reef and point. You won’t be alone, though – crowds are listed as sometimes, so expect a few other big-wave hunters.
For the rest of us, the best window is Thursday the 24th of September morning. The swell backs down to a much friendlier 1.4m from the ESE, with a combined energy of 493 (moderate wave energy). The wind is glassy from the SSW, so it’ll be clean as a whistle. That’s your pick for a good, surfable session. Water temp is roughly 55°, a little cooler than the seasonal average, so you’ll want a decent suit.
Apart from that, the first week is mostly a write-off, and after the 24th, it fades back to dribble. For the average bloke, that Thursday morning is the real winner. This is Rusty, out.
