Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, let's talk about what's comin' up for Ocean Beach.
The next week and a half is a real mixed bag. We've got a run of solid surf on the way, but the wind is gonna be the main character in this story. It starts off real promising, but then things get messy before we get another chance at some clean ones much later.
Let's get into it. This Monday, July 6th, is not the day to be out there. The morning is glassy, with a 4ft swell from the ENE with a period of 9 seconds, but the combined energy is weak at 296. It's just not got enough push. The afternoon gets a little bigger but the wind swings cross-on and it looks marginal.
Tuesday, July 7th, is where it starts to get interesting. The morning is clean with glassy conditions, a 6ft swell from the East at 9 seconds, and the energy is building to 680. But the afternoon is the real standout for the start of the week. It's still glassy, with a 7ft East swell at 10 seconds, and the energy jumps to 1039. That's a solid, clean wave with decent power. This is a good one for the intermediate crew, as the size is pushing it for beginners.
The real gem of the entire forecast, though, is Wednesday morning, July 8th. We've got a 8ft East swell with a 10-second period, a clean offshore wind from the WSW, and the combined energy is pumping at 1291. That's a fantastic combination. The swell direction is East, and the optimum for Ocean Beach is SE, so it's a little more East than ideal, but with that offshore wind, it's going to be clean and lined up. This is the best on offer, hands down. The water temp is 56°, which is a touch below average for this time of year, so don't forget the booties.
Later Wednesday afternoon, the wind shifts to a cross-shore from the SSE, and the conditions start to deteriorate. Thursday and Friday, July 9th and 10th, are a write-off. The swell gets huge, with Friday morning seeing a 15ft SSE swell at 10 seconds and a massive energy reading of 3913, but the wind is a strong cross-shore and it's going to be a messy, dangerous mess. That's expert-only, and even then, it's not gonna be fun. The setup is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We get a bit of a lull on Saturday, July 11th, with clean 7ft SE swell, but the wind is cross-offshore, so it's rideable but not epic. Then Sunday, July 12th, drops back into the small, cross-shore junk.
The next real chance for a wave comes a week later, on Wednesday, July 15th, in the morning. There's a 5ft swell from the NE with a short 7-second period, giving a combined energy of 352. The wind is cross-offshore and clean, so it's surfable, but the short period is a real downer—it's gonna be a bit weak and crumbly. For the rest of that second week, it's mostly small, weak, and often blown out, especially with a nasty storm system hitting Monday, July 20th, with near gale-force winds.
So, to sum it up: if you're looking for the best waves, you've got to be on it Wednesday morning, July 8th. That's the one. Tuesday afternoon is a solid backup. After that, it's a long wait of small, messy, or dangerously big surf until the short-period stuff around the 15th.
Rusty, signing off.
