Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for the Ocean Beach area over the next couple of weeks. It’s a mixed bag for sure, but there’s some real windows of fun to be had if you play it smart.
Right now, things are a bit messy with that Sunday morning cross-shore wind – the swell’s there at 6 ft but it’s choppy and weak in energy (465). Not worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at 56°, which is about normal for this time of year, so not factor.
Monday morning though, that’s where it gets interesting. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, with a clean 5 ft ENE swell. The energy jumps up (701) and it’s looking like really clean, workable surf. The best part of this early week.
Tuesday brings a bigger pulse. Morning has an offshore 7 ft east swell with serious energy (1273) and glassy conditions in the afternoon. This is the standout window for the first week – clean, punchy, and consistent.
Wednesday morning is the one for the experienced crew. That 8 ft east swell with an 11-second period drives a huge 1546 energy reading, and it’s dead glassy. This is where the point will start to link up proper. For beginners, that’s getting up over 5 ft though, so be mindful.
Then the wind turns on Thursday and Friday. A strong southerly blows in, pushing the swell way up to 16 ft with a crushing 6071 energy. That’s not for paddling – that’s for tow-in or kite gear only. The break just can’t handle that size cleanly.
By the weekend of the 12th, we’re dropping back into the 6-7 ft range with clean cross-off winds, but the energy’s tailing off (996). Still surfable, but nothing to write home about.
Into the second week, keep an eye on Wednesday 15th July afternoon. That ESE swell comes in at 8 ft with a very long 12-second period and glassy conditions, pushing 3005 energy. This could be absolutely pumping at the reef sections, with long, grinding walls. It’s big and powerful though – experts only.
The following Thursday 16th and Friday 17th mornings offer cleaner 7 ft to 5 ft ESE swell with light winds, but it’s dropping off. After that, the wind swings north on Saturday 18th and kills the quality right through until Monday 20th, which brings a messy NE windswell. Not worth chasing.
The standout for the whole forecast is Wednesday 8th July morning – that 8 ft east swell with glass and a long period is as good as it gets. For the later week, Wednesday 15th afternoon is the one to circle on the calendar for the big-wave crew.
