The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya with a look at the surf for the next couple of weeks. We've only got one spot in the mix, so let's get straight into it.
Right now, there's not a lot going on. We've got a slow start here. The first couple of days are pretty lackluster, with small, weak swell and a fair bit of wind to deal with. It ain't gonna be worth paddling out for.
Things start to look a bit more promising on Monday the 24th. The morning is still nothing special, but by the afternoon, we start to see a pulse of proper swell fill in. Ocean Beach is seeing a clean 7ft swell from the SSW with a very long period of 14 seconds and a gentle offshore wind. This is groundswell with a ton of energy behind it (1413), and it's gonna be a blast for anyone who knows what they're doing. Keep in mind, this size is for experienced surfers only.
Tuesday the 25th keeps the fun going with a clean 4ft SSW swell in the morning, dropping off a bit through the afternoon but still offering some fun, clean waves. The wind stays favourable with a light offshore breeze.
Thursday the 27th is shaping up to be a true standout. The morning kicks off with a clean 4ft SSW groundswell, a period of 16 seconds, and light winds. The energy is really pumping at 805, and it's got "very good" written all over it. Then, Thursday afternoon might be the pick of the entire run. We get that same solid 4ft SSW swell, but the period stretches out to a very long 17 seconds (energy of 932), and the wind goes completely glassy. That's about as good as it gets for a clean, powerful session. It's going to be a bit more lined up and powerful, so paddle out ready.
After a bit of a messy Friday and Saturday morning, the action picks back up on Saturday the 29th afternoon. We get a clean 6ft S swell with a solid 11-second period and light offshore winds. That's a fun, clean wave on offer.
Then, to close out the month, Monday the 31st afternoon brings another strong pulse. A 6ft SSW swell with an 11-second period and a gentle offshore wind will have the lines looking clean and inviting. The energy is solid at 759.
Looking into the first week of September, we have a couple of absolute bombs. Tuesday the 1st of September is looking huge. The morning has a clean 7ft SSW groundswell with an 18-second period and the energy is immense at 2407. The afternoon gets even bigger with an 8ft SSW swell from the same direction and a period of 15 seconds, and the energy reading is a massive 2837. This is expert-only territory, but for those who are up for it, it's going to be some of the most powerful, cleanest surf we've seen in a while. The wind stays offshore, so the faces will be clean.
The following Monday the 7th of September is another one to circle. Another solid 6ft SSW groundswell with a 14-second period and a gentle offshore wind. The energy is a hefty 1724, making for some very powerful and well-shaped waves.
A note on the water temp here at Ocean Beach: it's running about average for the time of year, so don't expect any surprises.
There are a few days in between those highlights that are either too windy or the swell is too messy to get excited about. Overall, the real standouts are the glassy Thursday afternoon on the 27th of August and the big, clean groundswell on Tuesday the 1st of September. Get after it.
Rusty.
