Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a real good look at what Ocean Beach has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so buckle up.
Right off the bat, we get a couple of solid windows. The first real standout hits us on Saturday July 4th morning. The water temp here is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. We’re looking at a 5ft easterly swell with a nice 12-second period – that's a proper groundswell, giving the waves some real push and shape. The energy is moderate at (694). And get this, the wind is a light northwesterly, blowing cross-offshore. That’s going to keep things super clean. Ocean Beach (San Francisco) is consistent and fairly exposed, and with those conditions, it’s going to be a gem. Expect some nice, lined-up sets. It won’t be too packed, but don’t expect it to be empty on a Saturday.
After that, things get a bit messy. Sunday and Monday are largely a write-off thanks to onshore and cross-shore winds chopping up the 3ft to 8ft swell. The energy on Monday morning ramps up to (953), but it’s a cross-on wind with a short, weak period, so it’s not worth your time.
Now, the next window worth circling on the calendar is Tuesday July 7th morning. This is a sneaky good one. The swell drops back to a clean 6ft from the east with a 10-second period, and the wind goes absolutely glassy. Zero wind. It’s going to be like a lake out there with clean, peeling waves. The energy is moderate at (832). For a beach and reef setup, this is about as good as it gets for a mellow session.
Moving on, Wednesday July 8th morning brings a bigger pulse of 8ft from the east-southeast. The energy jumps up to (1392), and we’ve got a light south-southwesterly cross-off wind. That’s going to keep the faces clean, but that size is starting to push into the intermediate zone. This is for the experienced crew who want a bit more power.
Then we hit a bit of a lull for a few days. Thursday and Friday are blown out by strong south winds, and then the real heavy stuff arrives. Friday July 10th through Saturday July 11th, we get a massive pulse of 13ft swell from the south-southeast. The energy goes ballistic at (3225) and (3567). The wind is a clean cross-off, which is incredible, but honestly, this is way too big for this break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it might be more of a spectator sport. If you’re not a pro, stay on the sand.
The swell eases a little on Sunday July 12th to 8ft, but the cross-shore wind messes it up. Not the best.
The final standout comes in the second week. Monday July 13th morning is a beauty. A 8ft easterly groundswell with a light offshore west-northwest wind. Clean as a whistle. The energy is solid at (1272). This is a great window for a Monday morning session. Tuesday July 14th morning is also looking tidy, with a 6ft swell and a light cross-off wind. The energy is still moderate at (977). These two mornings are your best bet for the second week, but remember, long-range forecasts are always a little less certain.
After that, the wind turns onshore again and the consistency drops off. By the time we get to Friday July 17th, it’s howling onshore with a messy 7ft south swell, and that trend continues into the final weekend with a huge 13ft south swell and a near-gale wind on Saturday July 18th. That’s a full-on blown-out mess.
So to wrap it all up: your absolute best windows are Saturday July 4th morning, Tuesday July 7th morning, and Monday July 13th morning. Get out there.
- Rusty.
