Table - best surf conditions forecast for Ocean Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what we’ve got coming down the line. We’re looking at a run that starts off solid, takes a real beating mid-week, then comes back with some absolute gems later on.
The first few days are where the action is. Wednesday the 8th sees a clean 7.2ft swell from the east with a 10-second period, and light offshore winds at Ocean Beach. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. That combined energy is pumping at 1124 (moderate energy), and it’s looking like very good surf conditions. This is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed, so it’ll handle that east swell well. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so keep that in mind. Later Wednesday arvo and into Thursday morning, the wind swings around and gets nasty. Thursday the 9th is a write-off – we’ve got a 16.4ft to 19.7ft southerly swell hammering in with near gale-force winds. The energy readings are through the roof (5984 and 7833), but the quality is zero. That’s not for paddling; that’s for kite surfing if anything. Friday the 10th is similar – big swell but messy cross-shore winds and poor conditions. Not worth getting wet.
Saturday the 11th is a return to form. The swell drops back to a nice 7.2ft from the southeast, period at 10 seconds, and the wind goes light offshore from the WSW. Clean waves, combined energy at 1060. Sunday the 12th is another good one: 4.9ft from the ESE, 9-second period, and glassy offshore wind in the morning. That’s clean, fun-sized surf for everyone.
Then we hit a quiet spell. Monday and Tuesday the 14th and 15th see the swell drop right off – down to 2.6ft. There’s a gap of a few days where it’s pretty flat and ordinary. But hold onto your boards, because the best is still to come.
Wednesday the 15th kicks off a really special run. We get a 4.3ft swell from the ESE, but the period jumps to 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Combined energy is 721, and the wind is light offshore. That’s clean, lined-up waves. Thursday the 16th morning is the standout: 5.9ft from the ESE, 14-second period, near glassy conditions with WSW winds at just 3 mph. Energy is 1328 (strong). That’s a solid, powerful swell with no wind bump. This is the best on offer – a real gem for experienced surfers, especially for a point or reef setup. But remember, that long period (over 11 seconds) can make beach breaks a bit too straight; this break is beach and reef, so it should handle it fine.
Friday the 17th holds clean with 4.6ft and a 12-second period, good winds. Then look at Monday the 20th – a 3.0ft swell from the SSW but with a very long 16-second period. That’s a rare, drawn-out groundswell. Energy is 726, and winds are light. That’ll produce some beautiful, long lines at the right break.
The very end of the forecast window heats up again. Tuesday the 21st gets a 8.2ft to 9.8ft SSW/S swell with a 14-second period and gentle cross-shore winds. The energy is massive (3691 and 4713). That’s expert only – too big for beginners. Wednesday the 22nd morning is just about perfect: 6.6ft from the south, 12-second period, and glassy – wind flat calm. Combined energy is 1391. That’s excellent surf for experienced surfers. Clean, powerful, and all yours if you can handle it.
So the standouts: Thursday the 16th morning for that clean, strong ESE groundswell, and Wednesday the 22nd morning for that glassy, powerful south swell. Both are long-range calls, so keep an eye on the forecast, but it’s looking promising.
Stay safe, and I’ll see you in the water.
