Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Ocean Beach.
We’ve got a slow start, but things are gonna fire up if you know where to look. The first few days are small and a bit mixed, so don’t rush out just yet. But by the time the second week rolls around, there’s some serious power on the way, though you’ll need your wits about you.
The water temp is sitting at 55.6°, which is about 1.6° below the norm for this time of year – nothing wild, just a touch cooler than usual, so you’ll want a decent spring suit.
Friday the 3rd of July starts off with a clean, glassy morning. Swell is 4.9 ft from the east with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is sitting at 536 (moderate). Winds are light westerly and glassy, making for some tidy, user-friendly waves. It’s a good one for beginners to get a feel. But the afternoon goes cross-shore, and it gets a bit scratchy.
Saturday the 4th has a better morning: 5.2 ft east swell, 12-second period, and a clean cross-off breeze. Energy is 694 (moderate). This is a solid shout for a Saturday session – clean and punchy for the size. The afternoon gets ruined by a strong onshore, so get in early.
Sunday the 5th is smaller again, 5.2 ft from the east-northeast with a short 8-second period. Despite the clean morning, that short period means it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly. Not the best, but still rideable for a longboard. By Monday the 6th, we get a jump in size – 8.2 ft from the east-northeast – but it’s messy with strong cross-shore winds. The energy is up at 706 (moderate), but the quality is poor. That one’s a skunk.
Now, Tuesday the 7th sees a shift. A clean 3.9 ft swell from the south-southwest, 11-second period, and glassy offshore winds. Energy is 575 (moderate). This is a sneaky good morning for a reef or point setup – clean, lined up, and easy to paddle out.
But the real standout comes on Wednesday the 8th. The morning shows 5.6 ft from the east, 10-second period, with clean cross-off winds, and the energy jumps to 985 (moderate-to-strong). The waves are going to have some proper push, and the conditions are looking very good. This is the pick of the first week – get on it.
From Thursday the 9th of July, things go big. The swell hits 13.1 ft from the south, with energy screaming up to 3003 (very strong). But here’s the catch: it’s too big for this break. Unless you’re an absolute charger, stay on the sand. This kind of size on a beach and reef setup is more interesting for the kite crew than paddle surfers. This pattern of oversized south swell continues right through to Saturday the 11th, with energy numbers well into the thousands. The wind stays cross-off and clean, but the size is only for experts.
Sunday the 12th drops back to 6.6 ft from the south-southeast, and the energy eases to 883 (moderate). Still a bit of chop on the surface, but it’s becoming more manageable.
Then, on Monday the 13th of July, we get another massive pulse – 11.5 ft from the south-southwest with a long 11-second period, and energy at 3716 (very strong). Again, too big for most. But keep your eye on the afternoon: the wind goes completely glassy, and the swell drops to a still-solid 7.9 ft from the south, 9-second period, energy at 1288 (strong). That afternoon window is excellent for experienced surfers – clean, powerful, and lined up.
Tuesday the 14th is the next real highlight. Morning: 7.9 ft south swell, 9 seconds, offshore wind, energy at 1984 (strong). The conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is a day for confident crew on a shortboard or step-up. The afternoon holds a clean 8.2 ft from the southeast with a longer 11-second period, energy at 1493 (strong). Both sessions are a goer.
Wednesday the 15th stays solid: 9.8 ft from the east-southeast, 12-second period (groundswell), energy at 2154 (very strong), with light offshore winds. This one is only for experts given the size, but the wave shape will be good with that long period.
After that, the swell slowly fades from the 16th into the 18th. The energy drops from 991 (moderate) down to 582 (weak). Winds become fresh onshore, and quality drops off. By the weekend of the 18th, we’re looking at 3.6 ft and under, with poor conditions. A good time to rest up.
So to wrap it up: the absolute best windows are the morning of Wednesday the 8th of July for a clean, punchy session, and Tuesday the 14th of July for the experienced crew getting proper power with clean wind. Don’t sleep on the Tuesday afternoon either – it’s just as good.
